A cross-country run to make winter a bit more bearable. As it is #mentalhealthawareness day today, I thought it would be a good time to tell my story. Almost two years ago, I was brutally raped. From then, my mental health deteriorated massively. Over the next year, I continued to get worse. I developed severe anxiety and depression which stopped me from making any progress in my studies or just completely stopped me from going to school. I was told by some people to keep quiet about what I was going through for risk of gossip and my friendships suffered needlessly for a while because of that. It was only once I started being honest with myself and the people around me that I started to recover, started to acknowledge and accept and heal. I was not broken, I was not damaged and I didn't want to be. From the start of this year, I made a pledge to myself that I would fight for me and for my right to be happy. I practiced self care and self honesty, I opened up to my friends and parents about how I felt and what they could do to help. I didn't make any excuses for myself. When we are suffering inside, it can be easy to point the finger at others and sometimes it is justified. However, I would not have made this journey if I hadn't woken up to the fact that I was being self-destructive and stopping myself from being happy. What happened to me wasn't my fault and it was awful but the hurt that came afterwards could have been shortened if I was more aware. More aware of the fact that the biggest weapon mental illness holds against us is self-sabotage - you are the author of your story and only you can decide whether your ending is happy or not. Don’t let your mental health have control over you and your life, fight the good fight and love yourself. .
