The densest people on the internet are the ones who say sci fi and fantasy are getting too political. Why canāt we go back to the good old days of The Twilight Zone, with its various episodes about mob mentality and the danger of mass paranoia that totally werenāt about the Red Scare. Or Star Wars and its genocidal empire of racially homogeneous Aryan men. Or Dune with its religious tribal peoples who live in a desert that contains the galaxyās most valuable resource and the wars with the foreign colonizers, that was purely from Frank Herbertās imagination. Can you imagine how much Star Trek would suck if it was packed to the brim with ham-fisted allegories of every societal issue of the 20th century. Not like all this modern ultra-political stuff, like a woman hero.Ā
Reminder of where comics got their start
The other day I was washing my hands and another woman came out the stall a couple seconds after I did. She wasnāt cis, and a different woman waiting for someone to finish up looked angry and opened her mouth to say something. Before she could, I smiled real friendly a this woman whoās just trynna wash her hands and told her I loved her skirt, and we started talking clothes.
The waiting woman was still clearly pissed but she didnāt say anything because she knew I wouldnāt have her back. Thatās all it took to keep some poor lady just trynna scrub up from getting harassed.
Sometimes doing the right thing is really hard and kinda scary. Other times all it takes is making it clear that you wonāt support someoneās nastiness. Itās a little enough thing to do your part.
So my mom is shopping in a supermarket, wearing a full hijab and jilbab (commonly misnamed as a burka) and the whole time she is there, this kid is staring at her. Wonāt stop staring. Just looking with wide-eyed shock. The lil feller isnāt any older than four. She doesnāt think much of it, she is used to far worse than just a few stares. Until the very end when the kid and his mom are behind her in the checkout, and he leans up and whispers loudly: āI LOVE YOU BATMANā
So. Today in class we assigned Macbeth roles to students to read. When I asked the class who wants to be Lady Macbeth, a young man raised his hand. I kind of stared at him like āLady Macbeth,ā and he nodded like āI know what Iām about maāam.ā So then the student who ended up as Macbeth raised his hand and said āHEāS THE ONE, HEāS MY WIFE!ā So I said āyeah sure why not,ā and the entire class period they were blowing kisses to each other and winking at each other, and every now and then Macbeth would say āIām the luckiest man on Earthā and Lady Macbeth would put a hand to his chest, and be like āBABE!ā.
I just stared at them, knowing that they CLEARLY have never read āMacbethā before, soā¦ all this lovey doveyā¦ I donāt know if I have the heart to tell them the truth.
Update:
Macbeth is absolutely willing to fucking throw down for Lady Macbeth. Has already threatened a wall, a desk, a few students, a textbook that was neither his nor Lady Macbethās, and me
Lady Macbeth is enjoying the attention and has begun to use this new connection to his advantage. Iām starting to suspect heās read ahead in the play.
Macbeth is going to end up living in detention at this rate.
Macbeth has no idea that he is the tragedy of the story. Claims to be the hero of the play, fails to see the irony in this
Macbeth slowly scooted his desk across the classroom to hold hands with Lady Macbeth. He was not subtle.
Macbeth has proposed on several occasions. Lady Macbeth just laughs and says theyāre already married.
Macbethās girlfriend is in the class with them and is ātotally not jealous or anything just thinks this whole fucking play is a waste of timeā
Lady Macbeth should probably be a theatre major at some point, he fucking rocked Act V scene I
Other teachers and staff are emailing me about the ālovely lordsā. Lady Macbeth now refuses to answer to anything other than Lady Macbeth and is always very upset when people donāt call him by his proper title.
