The person who did that translation has deactivated their twitter and I’m not sure what happened to them. 

It’s a metaphor for general “points” you gain in life for doing the right thing etc. 

If you put it in the context of the whole song (see my retranslation)

“ Ah, loss and gain aren't all there is to life Ah, but when the points I've gained expire I just sort of get annoyed“

Since it's a proverb, the meaning is pretty set and it usually gets translated to the equivalent English proverb "when there's a will there's way" which I believe UFP also used.

The full proverb is "naseba naru, naseneba naranu nanigoto mo" (為せば成る、為さねば成らぬ何事も) and literally it's "if you try you will succeed, and if you don't try you won't succeed, no matter what it is".

For extra information, this site tells me it comes from a poem written by the feudal lord Uesugi Harunori for his vassals in the Edo period. To my understanding nasu (為す) is kind of an old form of suru (usually する but with kanji it's 為る) which means "do" and it's kind of preserved in the keigo (honorific speech) form of suru which is nasaru/nasaimasu (為さる/為さいます) which also relates to the command suffix nasai (なさい) which is in phrases like oyasumi nasai or gomen nasai. And then naru (成る) is "become" but it can also mean "succeed".

As a matter of fact, the weblio Japanese dictionary lists 5 meanings.

I’d say that only two of them are directly applicable to the song, but I’ll summarize them all:

1. falling in small gentle drops, like trickling rain 2. creating or having a small single hole 3. being solitary, isolated from others (how UF used it in the official TL) 4. saying few words, sighing out or muttering things 5. cutting a string partway though (it doesn’t seem like this a particularly common use of the word, and this meaning is usually putsuri rather than potsuri)

轟轟 = thunderous, roaring, generally loud

豪語 = to brag or exaggerate, talking with big confidence

The UFP lyrics translate it as “Boasting like roaring” which is pretty accurate. I checked the same lyrics interpretation I mentioned for your previous ask, and they described it as meaning “I’m gonna say big things in a big (loud) voice!”

So, as mentioned before, I’ve set up (with a lot of help from Kica of Cafe Kica and others) a wiki for H!P Lyrics! Anyone is free to join and edit!

I’m currently slowly working on getting all the translations I’ve posted here on to the site, though I don’t mind if anyone else wants to help with that (I’d be very thankful, actually). Anything from this blog or Cafe Kica, or any of the other sites in the “affiliated sites” section on the front page, is free to be posted on the wiki! If you have your own translations or color codes, you can also post them as long as you’re fine with them being stored there.

At the moment it’s unfinished, but I’m working on a tutorial to make it really easy for anyone to contribute, and until then there’s a lot of guidance in the resources tab in the navigation as well.

From now on, I’m likely going to post new lyrics translations through the wiki, but when I do I’ll try also make a post here, especially if I have any commentary on the song. (Do you guys actually read the commentary? I end up writing it either way, haha.) I’m also going to start doing liner note translations, which will also be kept on the wiki (See Atsui! for an example).

The literal translation is something like: “This is a world where every time I stay true to myself, it wears someone (else) down”. 

I did check a Japanese lyric site about this line, and they pointed out that “dareka” doesn’t necessarily exclude the protagonist themself, though I think I take the lyric as meaning one person stays true to themself and another person is hurt or upset by it, however subtly. Note the lyrics before it are “People’s worries mostly come from relationships with other people/Who exactly do you want to be judged by?”, so this line is saying that being yourself is bound to rub some people the wrong way, leading to being judged and having problems with people. It could be applied to a lot of things.

Tsuranuku (貫く) can be kind of a hard word to translate, it can literally mean pierce all the way through something, but it usually (probably almost every time I’ve encountered it?) means to stick to something (ie principles) or carry something out to its end. You can check weblio to get a vibe of how it’s used.

I’ve deleted what the rest of this post said, because the situation is actually looking like I may stop using this blog for lyrics translations in the near future. Instead, I and some others are going to work on making a wiki of Hello! Project lyrics, so that they can all be found in the same place (and you guys won’t have to send me asks about it :^) )

I actually think UFP’s translations have gotten a little better since they started. Usually in terms of conveying the meaning, they’re more or less fine, and it’s more the English phrasing that has problems.
