Are You Dissociating?
Dissociating is one of the most common responses to abuse and trauma. It involves feeling numb, detached or unreal and (while it happens to everyone once in a while) is experienced more frequently and severely in survivors. Dissociating people vary widely in symptoms and may experience any or all of the things from the following list.
You may be dissociating if you:
find yourself staring at one spot, not thinking anything
feel completely numb
feel like youāre not really in your body, like youāre watching yourself in a movie.
feel suddenly lightheaded or dizzy
lose the plot of the show or conversation you were focused on
feel as if youāre not quite real, like youāre in a dream
feel like youāre floatingĀ
suddenly feel like youāre not a part of the world around you
feel detached and far away from other people, who may seem mechanical or unreal to you
are very startled when someone/something gets your attention
completely forget what you were thinking just a moment ago
suddenly cover your face or react as if youāre about to be hurt for no reason

Do you understand what a relief and yet what a complete nightmare it has been to read this? I finally fucking UNDERSTAND myself. How and why Iāve behaved the way I have for the last 15 years of my life. Iām 21 now. Iām not sure how Iāve never thought about researching this as I always chalked myself up to being tougher than most after surviving mental/emotional abuse by my alcoholic mother for all that time. I did realize I had dissociative amnesia, but never did I imagine I was experiencing many more side effects than I knew. This fucking hurts. But thatās okay. Because NOW I KNOW. To the person who shared this (maverikloki), thank you. Thank you so much. I wish I could hug you right now, you beautiful person.

You guys, I just came into work to one of the sweetest and most touching things I've had happen in a long time. (Not naming names for obvious reasons, still falls under HIPAA) Monday night around 9pm or so, I helped a gentleman in the photo lab who was printing off a picture of his mom for her funeral the next morning, telling me about how he and his brothers weren't sure if they'd do an open casket or not for her, so the picture was an option if not. I related that I'd lost my mother this past Christmas of 2016, which he instantly understood that I knew where he was coming from, even if my mother hadn't been the best to us kids. We talked about how it puts you in this weird space of mind where time speeds up so fast that it seems slow; how we felt just like yesterday they were still here now today they're gone; and how a matriarch (or in my case 2 matriarchs in my family) had brought an entire family together in one spot. While mine had split more certainly after they both passed separately and I wasn't sure where life would take me now at 23. He appreciated the thought I put in to making her portrait just right in color to give her more life and less like the camera was doing her an injustice. He came back Thursday night when I was off work to drop me these beautiful flowers from her coffin. It's an honor and a gift I don't feel I deserve but it humbles me and encourages me to reach out and talk to people more. You don't exactly realize the impact you can have on somebody just with one conversation. Are the majority of them around my age (22) or older? Hell yeah because PokƩmon came out 20 years ago, many of these people were playing it as kids before I was ever identifying colors or able to string a sentence together. It's a sense of nostalgia and dreams come true so... yeah.
