LETS BRING BACK 1337 SPEAK
why do i even try
I THoUGHT YOU MEANT THE YEAR
my l0rd, t3h p34s4nt5 4r3 r3v01t1ng! W3 mu5t s411y f0rth 4g41n5t th3m 4thw1th!
Happy ten years of being so old no one knows what 1337 is
Emos & scene kids got this close to abolishing gender for real. I try not to think about it too much.
The idea of a popular teenage subculture where girl & boys pretty much all dress the same feels impossible now but for a while it was reality and it was beautiful.
Former 00s emo (Millennial) kid here.
Uhh no we didn’t. Misogyny, homophobia and transphobia were Extremely rife in the scene. Precisely because the boys looked like the girls - the boys who were not closeted transfems like myself frequently were extremerly sexist. If you look at the lyrics of most of those scene bands - hell even the titles like “ikilledthepromqueen” and “kill Whitney dead” it was mostly misogyny. Men in their 20s frequently groomed my then-16 year old friends, and I had to convince them to not date the 23 year old while at high school. Many of these men would later be charged for child r*pe.
Evenly openly gay people like Jeffery Starr are transphobic and reactionary.
While I felt better dressing like a girl in the 00s, it was no substitute for HRT and actually being a girl, as opposed to a feminine boy. I was still dysphoric in women’s clothes as long as didn’t have the body of a woman, and treated socially like “woman-lite”.
The worst part is - a lot of straight boys did it for the attention of mostly straight women, rather than gender affirmation like myself.
Being emo or scene is no substitute for trans liberation and feminism. It was absolutely the opposite of gender abolitionist. Because often the sexism and queer phobia of scene kids came precisely because many emo boys felt too emasculated and needed to prove their masculinity, even in women’s jeans. Hence the lyrics and grooming.
A boy can still dress effeminate and act like a patriarch. There is a reason so many scene bands have vocalists with SA/CSA allegations or charges against them, Lostprophets being an extreme example.
Please stop making it the utopia it never was, especially if you were not there. I don’t miss it. I am a woman, not an emo femboy. I don’t want us to go back to 90s-00s values. Zoomers idolise my childhood too much.
I also don’t want my femininity abolished - I was still dysphoric when I was androgynous. It’s why I get upset when I am *still* they/themmed by strangers.
As a broader note: I am sick of “gender abolition” being used as a subtle mechanism for transmisogyny and pressuring trans women to detransition (OP does not imply this to be fair). I don’t want to abolish MY gender identity, just patriarchal gender roles and power dynamics. My femininity is not something to be abolished, but empowered and celebrated. The same applies to those who are NB. Men get to be men, just not to be at a top of a sex hierarchy. Emo men still were men, most of the time.
baseball interviewers will ask "how do you throw the ball so good" and Mariners players will casually drop that they have a headmate who plays the game for them
all my alters become walters when i pitch the baseball of success
The Chinese shoe manufacturer decided to demonstrate the indestructibility of their shoes
And also the indestructibility of that woman's ankles
once I snorted a fat line of nuance and everything started depending. watch out

every person can feel freddie’s presence in their souls when they sing MAMAAAAAA UUHHHH, I DONT WANNA DIE, I SOMETIMES I WISH I’VE NEVER BEEN BORN AT ALL with all the air in their lungs i’m not joking
it’s fucking crazy to think about the amount of people who have sung bohemian rhapsody? like it’s such a unifying song, by nature of the fact that so many people know it. it holds so many good memories for me and other people. it’s a song you scream in the car with your friends while you drive around your boring hometown, it’s a song you drunkenly sing with your arm around your best friend, or a song you sing along to with strangers when it’s on in public. it’s bittersweet to think about freddie’s legacy carrying on like that through his masterpiece. freddie carries on because he’s a part of so many people’s good memories and bohemian rhapsody is a huge part of that.
Reblog if you have sung bohemian rhapsody with your friends
every time i see this post i’m reminded of the video of 65,000 people singing bohemian rhapsody in near-perfect harmony
like, what other song can make that claim?
Some of the highlights of that video include:
The crowd cheering after the first stanza when they realize what they’re all doing
So many people audibly ‘doing the guitar parts’… like ya do
The sheer number of voices joining the rediculous falsetto (thanks, Roger)
How they all start jumping at the ramp-up “so you think you can stomp me”
Hands up, hundreds, thousands deep for the final “ooooo”s and the last line to close the song
How to text you’re friends when you’re bad at it and it’s scary
I’ve got one of those! Not quite as big or uniform though
Adis villian backstory
So that new frame huh

I had the honor of illustrating one of the stream drops for this year’s Tennocon 🫶
I hope to (virtually) see you all there on July 10th and 11th!
For those who have missed it, a tourist in Hawaii decided it would be fun to chuck a rock (a BIG rock) at a monk seal. He missed, but he was captured on video, and when told it was illegal to interfere with them, said "I'm rich, I can pay the fine."
Is the best part that he got doxxed? No.
Is the best part that he got tracked down by a local and beaten? No.
Arrested on state at federal charges, looking at up to 5 years and 50K? Nope.
The best part is the local city council's reaction.
And the best part of that is the look on the attorney's face.
