Hey, weird question. Are there any lemon seeds back there? I dunno if they were able to send one of everything 'cus we weren't exactly rolling in storage space despite how big the Hail Mary is. Just wondering.
" lemon? " simon murmurs, putting down the mister bottle to scratch at his stubble in thought. they've been on erid for a few months now, as best settled in as any humans could be on an alien planet --- but simon still hadn't memorized exactly everything he had transported from the hail mary. sure, he took all the seeds and even the fake plants first once it was deemed safe, though that was more blind instinct based ... considering he had no personal items besides the vague claim he stuck into the ship's greenery. thankfully, the bloodnaut had placed them all in one area, and even organized them by name: shouldn't be too hard to check.
simon turns to what was once a file cabinet, now turned greenhouse storage, and begins to rifle through it --- his pointer finger flicking through the letters ... A ... B ... C ...
" let me see. "
I ... J ... K ... L: here we go, nestled between some lavandula and lilium seeds.
" we have a single bag. " simon calls over his shoulder for grace to come see, pinching the foil bag between his middle finger and thumb to slip it out so that he can examine it closer ... " ' first lemon seeds in space ' is written on the back here ... so i'm guessing these are the first. "
simon can't debate the fact of that: he doesn't even know what the hell a lemon is. so he simply passes the bag over to grace. " fruit or vegetable? "
Not book smart or street smart but a secret third thing.
supid
supid.
' huh. we shouldn't need to harvest it any time soon. ' simon doesn't look over at grace, brown eyes still looking at the plant thoughtfully --- it looks mature: tall and sturdy, with the buds beginning to color with lilac. certainly not a sapling. that's good, really really good actually.
" if the food begins to thin out, we could eat parts of it to spread out longevity. every part of the plant is edible and can be regrown just from the roots. the flowers can also be pickled. they were kind of something of a sweet treat on eden in that way too. "
not a great food source on it's own, but to add fluff to a small meal is better than no fluff at all in simon's mind: tricking the mind and stomach is pivot in such situations after all. finally, his hand lifts off the glass to scratch at his stubble --- glancing over at grace as the movement of the man catches his eye. of course the biggest bit that was taken interest in was the mention of eden.
" ... the majority of folks there liked natural stuff. " simon replies, tense and careful with his words.
" we synthesized things too, but most of the station was more grateful for natural things. more interesting than a machine shaking around. "
more human. more like a planet they never knew save for in sermons and in writing. a little piece of a dead home only eden had been entrusted with, held protectively away from the rest of humanity that had squandered their own. none of this said aloud, simon only shrugs to end his line of thoughts before they could get more bloody ... " eden was pretty green, i guess you could say. not like the COI, those assholes couldn't grow a plant to save their lives. "

" duct tape works, nobody has even noticed the hole i duct taped. "
sorry for the mixed signals I don’t know what I want or what I’m doing mostly
After being stooped over my laptop for the last ten minutes in complete silence, eyes furiously flicking back and forth across the screen as I rapidly scrolled for the answer to my solution, I jolt forward and clap my hands then turn to point at Simon.
“ You look like Markiplier! That's who you remind me of. ” I shake my head and rub the palm of my hand across my brow.
“ I can't believe it took me so long to remember. ”
'🎶Human memory so slow, so terrible,🎶 ' chimed a familiar song off in the distance. I don't pay it any mind, he's made the remark often enough. Not everyone has a computer for a brain!
“ There was one year where the kids kept printing off this picture of the guy - heavily edited, might I add - and hid them all over the classroom. No surprise- they lost their library printer privileges for about a month after the incident. ” I laugh at the memory.
Kids were wild, unruly things; there really was no telling what shenanigans they'd come up with.
“ I was still finding them a year later. They know how to find the most obscure nooks and crannies you wouldn't think to look in your own classroom. ”
the complete silence of a room of individuals all doing their own things was blissful: rocky doing their own thing in the hallway, grace tapping away at a laptop doing who knows what, and simon simply existing right by his most favored potted plant and with a random book he had picked from the assortment grace had offered him. yes, it was blissful --- with the only sound being the mary's engine humming.
that was until grace decided to clap, a sound sharp enough to make simon flinch and drop the book he had been awkwardly cradling. surprise turns to annoyance rather quick, a glare sent grace's way " what the fuck- "
' YOU LOOK LIKE MARKIPLIER! that's who you remind me of. ' annoyance then turns to confusion, eyes squinted with brows pinched and head bowing to the side an inch. " i look like who? "
ignoring rocky's comment & grace's rambling, simon anchors his good hand to his knee to manage himself up from the floor with the intent of meandering over to glance at the laptop. a man who looks like him? he doubts it, simon had a pretty unique looking profile, so there's-
" ... what the fuck. " it's like looking into a fucked up mirror. the man in the corner of the video does look just like him, only with slightly shorter hair and glasses, significantly more well taken care of as well --- but that's just a given.
" huh. "
pokemon AU Simon would have a Dhelmise unfortunately
Over two months had passed since this insane ordeal had began. My life was starting to feel like a sci-fi series that had been dragged out waaaaay too long. A beaten up submarine-looking vessel containing just one human hurdling towards the Hail Mary's hull was simply the episode where it finally "jumped the shark".
It was hard to keep my eyes off him - hm, I could've phrased that better - now that he was awake, conscious and not attempting to throw every object within reach at Rocky and I. It was unbelievable. There was another living, breathing human on my ship that wasn't here when I started the journey.
I think he's human anyway. He says he is. I had to ask just to be sure. Really letting my socials skills shine through with that one... but it was hard not to. It was better than asking Rocky if the man was even real. I'm more than aware of the things the human brain could whip up under the right conditions and I wasn't eager in reaching that point in our journey so soon.
Rocky had decided it was best to give our new guest some peace whilst he ate, but eating was a social activity amongst humans! It wasn't taboo to intrude on another whilst they were eating.
Although it was probably weird to be watched from a distance in silence.
“ Whaaat? I wanted to check in on my new friend. Make sure the service aboard the Hail Mary is meeting your expectations. ” Nice save, idiot. It takes everything in me to not smack myself in face.
“ You need any help with that? ” I offer, making my way into the room. He's kept to himself for the most part, but I leave a distance between us. Some of us have a concept of personal space.
“ I'm guessing this whole arm situation is pretty recent. ” I gesture at the general area with jazz hands before continuing, “ it looked pretty gnarly when we got you to the NannyBot. ” Uncomfortably fresh.
For everything I'd had to deal with on this mission, nothing made me any more prepared for pure viscera that flooded the ship. LITERALLY! I try not to think too hard about the day we retrieved him. The taste of copper and a little bit- okay, maybe a lot of vomit is something I wasn't forgetting anytime soon.
' you need any help with that? ' god no, simon doesn't think his ego would ever recover if another grown man fed him. besides, the hardest part is just the cup sliding slightly --- the surface of the table smooth and without any traction for the underside of the ceramic cup (they're all new, simon is pretty sure. never having been salvaged or originally something else. it boggles the mind.) ... so: simon shakes his head 'no' when the offer is extended, then promptly keeps his gaze down and focused on the cup. maybe if he can't see grace then it'll feel less awkward.
such an attempt is thwarted though, when the other human shifts question to the lack of an arm. ' it looked pretty gnarly when we got you to the NannyBot '
" ... yeah " simon still struggles to verbalize the chain of events that had happened: having achieved no better clarity than what his mind comprehended the week prior. it was done so quick, left only with the flashes of memory that was bone rotting like soaked wood & breaking apart at the very marrow as he pulled and pulled and pulled until -
suddenly, the ramen isn't as appetizing anymore. but simon knows better than to waste food, so he just keeps twisting the noodles around the fork until half of the cup's worth was balled up and practically forces himself to swallow in one go. done. " i don't know how long it was before uh, the SM-13 was in space and not in the blood ocean. but it happened pretty much right before that. "
dry rot, or perhaps the human version of it. his mind best supplies as a comparison ... though maybe it wasn't the best, he wasn't really a science guy --- radiated blood and alien bullshit made his skull ache just as much as the damaged nerves in his nub. " so yeah, it's still new to me. "

wiping my cheeto dust hands on your shirt. i want to build a beautiful life with you
hopefully i'll get to do something other than endure soon. that would be really nice
his dumbass basic facts are done <3
" you don't have to watch me eat. " that's a pretty surprising amount of words leaving simon's mouth, considering they haven't spoken too much since he unleashed himself from the medical bay in that panicked stupor of fight or flight ... not anything meaningful beyond the initial conversation where pleasantries and introductions were exchanged, swapped details that left them both more confused than comforted. all about a week ago.
that's the thing, though --- simon can withstand silence. after all, when you live with about the same two hundred people all your life, one doesn't really find themselves with too much to chatter about constantly. what simon couldn't stand, however, was the hovering. the both of them, the small rock and the other human, constantly existed in the doorways of this ship. watching him, not so subtly following him from area to area when simon did leave the shelf of plants.
too much like prison. only instead of judgemental eyes it's too damn curious gazes. such as now, as he tries to not fumble with the damn little cup of food (ramen, it's called. which is quickly becoming a favorite) ... and yet, there is actually an attempt to keep the annoyance out of his tone. for despite the bristling feeling of being caged ... simon was in fact grateful to both the dweeb and the little singing rock: of not being dead, of being allowed on admittedly the cleanest ship he's ever seen.
still, there's only so much gawking one can take when they're trying to eat newly one - handed. when they feel clumsy and embarrassed and trying to mentally plan (just a fucking break, please)
" I'm not going to choke on re - hydrated pasta. "
