↳ my pretty baby holds me down by ChaSeuBao but specifically Chapter 2: While the Other is "Asleep" Tbh I just feel this could perfectly happen in canon. They're just as immature and impulsive and in love as they act in the manga, and it's perfect. Post-canon fics where Atsushi and Akutagawa have matured and grown into proper men are v v good but fics where they still act childish and dumb because they never had a childhood they could grow out of are v v good too. Get together fic.

↳ the only exception by dextergrif I've reread this so many times avbkavkvcqbwsl opposite to the one above, it's nice to see a more mature version of Atsushi and Akutagawa who've slowly worked out of their traumas to be a better version of themselves!! I adore sskk being friends before getting together because ~they're the only ones who get each other~. Enemies to friends to lovers is good. Get together fic.

Such a good enstablished-relationship Akutagawa character study and sskk navigating their relationship 🤧🤧 On touch-repulsed Akutagawa and touch-starved Atsushi who's perfectly respectful of his boyfriend's boundaries. AND AKUTAGAWA CRYING that is SO good

I’ve always preferred to immerse myself in long fics, but I’ve been reading shorter fics in the past few weeks and ohmygosh have I been missing out. So of course I put together a list of my recent faves!

• and Hope to Die, by olimakiella (24k) - I love this one so so much. Draco is wicked clever and quirky the way only he can be, there’s wandless magic and WILD MAGIC, and Harry James Potter is a cinnamon roll and a slice of treacle tart all rolled into one. The Centre of Magical Intelligence needs to be canon.

• Exiled, by gryffindorJ (16k) - THIS IS SO GOOD I WAS SCREAMING. It kept me on my toes, with snarky Draco, banter, flirting, some pining, and this glorious underlying angst. Great writing, especially the dialogue.

• The Owl Who Came for Christmas, by dracogotgame (17k) - Owl!Draco is my favorite, he’s adorable and fluffy (even if he THINKS he’s large and majestic) and gives Harry the stink eye when he tries to pet him. Harry still can’t think of decent names, and this is just really sweet and lovely.

• Hey, Potter, by SunseticMonster (16k) - Harry starts responding to Draco’s jibes with compliments, and DRACO’S BAFFLED AND ALMOST SHY REACTIONS TO THAT KILLED ME. I lovelovelove this author’s Draco.

• More Than That, by joosetta (10k) - This one left me wanting more, I know 52-year old Drarry might sound weird to you, but I assure you it is all kinds of great. It’s sweet, it’s real, and it makes me so emotional. My boysss.

• Like Diamonds We Are Cut With Our Own Dust, by raitala (10k) - I was beside myself by the end of this, this fic is just perfect, characterizations SO on point, the Drarry dynamics entirely in line with my headcanon. All inspired by the most gorgeous piece of Drarry art ever to exist, alekina’s Branded.

• Almost Like A Song, by Brief_and_Dreamy (7k) - I cried so hard over this one, I was practically sobbing myself to pieces. So heartbreaking, but not in the way you’d expect. Angsty, angsty, angsty. I loved it though.

• Sex On Fire, by gypsyflame (11k) - So much personality for such a short fic, and yet it left me wanting more and more. The elements of fire woven through this were great, and it was all just so intense and passionate, wow.

How is 2023 almost over?? This fandom year was a mixed bag for me; in good news, I managed to shake the awful writer's block of 2022, but sadly that definitely meant that I spent less time reading. In the first half of the year I kept up with Dronarry fest, and Wireless, but since the summer I've been working on a longfic and have definitely found that it's impaired my ability to read longer stuff. With that in mind, the lovely @drarrymyheart very kindly offered to step in and help out, and so in addition to my own recs, I present a few of her recs that I've heard great things about, but haven't got round to yet myself <3 these are denoted by stars (⭐)! There are some absolute bangers on this list (imho), and it features such a wide range in terms of length and tropes, that I really hope there's something here for everyone. Romance reclist

A Pain of Our Choosing (E, 5.9k) - @lqtraintracks​

This is a wildly compelling Eighth Year fic, and I think one of the things I found most fascinating was the way lqt captured a real sense of violence between them, without making it brutal or gratuitous. Instead, it’s part of the essential conflict of the narrative, and a delicious study in character growth and catharsis. Harry is fucked up in the most intriguing way, while still maintaining his essential Harry-ish good humour and swagger and spark. And Draco is so tenderly written, while still flawed. It’s about them learning how to feel better, in the most delicious ways. I loved this one.

Breathe You In (M, 2.1k) - @shealwaysreads​

This is such a perfect slice-of-life fic. Every detail is so lovingly wrought, yet depicted with such gentleness and lightness of touch, that it feels like it seeps into your consciousness and envelops you. I love how subtle and restrained the writing is - such confidence! Such a sense of purpose! It’s world-building at its finest, and all within the confines of Harry’s bath. Fall into this immersive little piece of heaven, and fall in love with it.

Litany (M, 7.1k) - @thistle-verse​

It’s a pandemic fic, but not as we know it. This is the most glorious look at lockdown, with all the building unease and claustrophobia of confinement. It captures that curious, unsettling mood of panic mingled with relentless tedium, and the device of the list-making is so clever and impactful that I want to just lie down and roll around in all the feelings it makes me feel. It’s also, ultimately, an uplifting and lovely and very moving fic -  the character development and playfulness of the format, plus the smooth, brisk pacing, whisk us through unscathed to the joyful, hopeful ending. Very much looking forward to author reveals!

Lucid (E, 4.7k) - @dracoladon​

Every so often a writer comes along that makes me wish I was able to eat and drink every word they write, just swallow it down and pat my stomach in satisfaction, and dracoladon is one of them. Such exuberance of pace, such unexpected and delightful characterisation, such a joyous and affirming plot. This is deliciously hot, perfectly pitched in terms of its tone, and Harry’s narrative voice is one of the most charming things you’ll read this year. An absolute treasure of a fic.

Matching Pair  (T, 3.8k) - @the-starryknight​

One of my favourite things about Starry’s writing is how vivid and rich her world-building is, and this is a perfect example of her proficiency in creating a whole mood out of a little pocket of space. We spend all 3.8k words of this fic in front of a talking portrait in the Tate Magique, but Starry takes us from Cornwall to Boston and through two lifetimes of parallel loves, all from our spot in the gallery. Magique indeed! This is a poignant, tender story about regret and forgiveness, and we get to see older, softer Drarry learning how to balance the ease of their interest in each other with the weight of their pasts. A treasure.

A Midsummer Affair (E, 5.2k) - @lazywonderlvnd​

The mood of this fic is so potent, so fervid, that it feels like you’re in it as you read. I love the languid prose of the flashbacks, the sharp, shocking contrast of the non-linear narrative, the epically good dialogue. I was sucked straight into this fic, and read it in one breathless, choked-up rush. It’s so moving! So sweetly sad! Such a hopeful and confident ending! Read this then go and read everything else lazywonderland has written and you can thank me later.

oxygen (T, 4k) - @maesterchill​

This is one of those fics I wish with all my heart I could have written. It feels like every word, every line, every bit of world-building and characterisation and dialogue, is so PERFECTLY chosen. I actually read it with my hand to my chest like a caricature of a swooning Victorian maiden, and ended with tears in my eyes. Maester says of it, “it’s heavy on smoking and light on plot” because that’s what she’s like,  but let me tell you, it’s immense in terms of its emotional impact. I could read 100k of this Draco (his weariness, his fortitude, his intense self-criticism) and this Harry (who I am in love with, crooked smile, trembling hands, kind heart and all), but equally this vignette is so perfectly satisfying in terms of how much it reveals, that it really is all we need. And there’s stunning art too. Top-class, a perfect short, and it has my heart forever.

push and pull you down (E, 5.2k) - @bonesliketambourines​

This is the fic for you if you want to read something that effortlessly blends real pathos with a sort of blatant, unabashed, filthy heat. I think I actually made a little noise when we were introduced to louche, fucked out, fucked up Draco in his underpants. He’s just endlessly compelling and distracting in this, and bonesliketambourines captures that so well (and makes us see exactly how Harry would feel the same), but does it in a really restrained, subtle way. I particularly loved the ending too. There’s a delicious ambiguity around what’s a good idea and what’s not - the concept of this being the best worst idea they’ve ever had, sort of thing? And there’s no compromise on the mood of the piece - Lis carries it through to the end and we’re left breathless.

There is a place ( Chapter 22, T, 1.1k) - @cibeewastaken​

Look, if you can think of anything more perfect for cibee’s trademark blend of wry humour and devastating pathos than a found family fic about Slytherins and Gryffindors sharing Grimmauld and having a special room for them all to cry in, then you are incorrect because this is in fact the perfect cibee fic. It’s funny and tragic and hopeful and moving all at once, and in one thousand words cibee creates a warhammer blow directly to the heart. Give me Draco and Hermione wrongly filling out crossword puzzles or give me death! This left me with a lump in my throat and a sense of peace.

To the Rhythm of the Waves  (G, 2.7k)  - @tsauergrass​

There’s something so magical about tsauergrass’ writing, and really any of their fics could have appeared on this list, but I couldn’t possibly not feature this tender domestic piece about the quest for a home. The mood is dreamlike, like we’re hearing a snatch of distant music or feeling a breeze spring up out of nowhere - that sense of something charming and uncanny. Tsauergrass writes tenderness so beautifully, and this whole fic feels like we’re getting a glimpse into something hopeful and special and private. A blissful cottagecore romance.

Bonus fics!

fermata (M, 6.5k) - @yoyointhegarden​

This is technically cheating as this fic is from 2019 but it simply has to be included. We know that pianist!Draco is a fandom staple at this stage, but I’ve never come across a depiction quite like this one. It’s a quietly devastating fic (though it happens to be about making noise), and deals with trauma and grief and coping mechanisms in the most lyrical yet unflinching way. A true beauty of a fic.

Our Little Life (M, 7.2k) - @tackytigerfic​

This is also cheating but it’s my list and I want in! I wrote this little time travel/ alternate timelines/ epic love across the ages story for one of my dearest fandom friends, and it took me a while to work out where to go with it. In the end, I decided on… everywhere. Harry keeps dreaming of versions of him and Draco through history, in thousands of different scenarios and thousands of different lives (don’t worry, I only write about five of them). It’s sort of a non-linear, meandering little story, but I tried to pack in a proper big love story into a small space. My favourite sort of short to write - indulgent in plot, pared back in style, and vivid in mood.

I love short fics. I love the economy of language, the compression of the emotional resonance, the different ways in which authors approach the pacing and plotting and characterisation.

I’ve put together this list to showcase some of my favourite short fics in the Drarry fandom. It’s not an exhaustive list by any means, and it’s very subjective—all of these fics mean something to me—but they’re all bloody brilliant and, between them all, they showcase the best things about writing small.

After five years of silence in a mental institution, Harry speaks. "Malfoy," he murmurs. Why would he speak the name of his Slytherin counterpart? So begins the treatment with Draco in the forefront of it all. 

Okay okay okay real talk- this is my favorite Drarry fic of all time. It’s basically about what would happen if the war had taken a bigger toll on Harry’s mental health and he ended up shutting down. He’s been living at the hospital for years in a zombie-like state. His friends visit (I especially like when Rose Granger-Weasley stops by), but still nothing’s yet to snap him out of his ‘funk’ where he hasn’t spoken to anyone or even acknowledged the presence of another person standing right in front of him in years. Mute and unresponsive, alone yet not alone, his progress is going nowhere... that is, until his doctors decide to try triggering him back to reality by taking a new approach and doing something that should definitely draw a reaction out of him: bringing back his old school rival. Draco’s forced to visit and his behavior is just so realistic to how someone in his situation would react. The story is essentially about him bringing Harry back to life and somewhere in the process they fall in love.

Excerpt from one of my favorite scenes: (chapter 4)

Draco was bored out of his mind. He was staring at the wall with Harry. “I really don’t understand what you find so exciting about watching white walls, Potter. At least add some color to it,” he muttered, flicking his wand. The white turned to green. “Much better,” he said. “Mother made me learn that spell last week because she’s redecorating. Which really means that I’m doing all the grunt work.” 

Harry tilted his head towards Draco, narrowing his eyes that were still searching the wall. Draco didn’t notice as he was brushing invisible lint from his slacks. Harry’s gaze flicked from the seam of the wall and the ceiling to the dark wood floors where the wall ended. He got up unsteadily. Draco tsked, getting up with him. “What are you doing?” he asked, shaking his humb legs. Harry shuffled towards the wall, stopping a meter from it and sitting down again. Draco ran his eyes over the wall. “You like green?” he murmured, kneeling beside Harry. “I should probably get Lily.” He was too lazy to get up again. “Or I could just keep you entertained.” He waved his wand at the wall again, coloring it red.

Harry blinked at the new paint. He reached out hesitantly, brushing his fingertips on the wall. “There’s still life in you yet,” Draco said, smiling. He changed the color to blue. Harry scooted forward, pressing his palm against the blue. “Ugh, you’re determined to make me get up again, aren’t you?” Draco complained, standing upright and stretching. “Don’t do anything until I get back,” he added, walking to the door and sounding the charm for the Apprentice.

Lily arrived in the corridor a minute later, looking immensely concerned. “He’s fine,” Draco said before Lily could freak out. She was looking unconvinced as she walked into the room after Draco. She blinked at the blue wall, staggering back.

“What did you do?” she asked accusingly. Draco huffed, pointing at Harry. Lily seemed to have noticed just then. “Oh...” she breathed. The man was moving his head along the wall, scanning the entire expanse of blue that he had discovered. “Wow.”

“You always assume the worst of me,” Draco groused. “You and Mother would get along quite well.”

Draco Malfoy is forced into hiding with the Golden Trio and dragged into their search for horcruxes. What ensues is a journey of redemption, unexpected friendships and an unwanted, turbulent romance with Harry Potter. Warnings for swearing, sexual content, and dark themes.

I know I said the last fic was my favorite Drarry fanfiction of all time but this is one of the BEST fanfics of all time! That may sound dramatic, but I promise you, as someone who’s an irl avid reader, has read hundreds (if not thousands) of fanfictions, and is a literal editor for actual real-life books, this is one of the best things I’ve ever read PERIOD. In my head it’s tied with Hollow Edge (an Elu/Skam France fanfic) for the best fanfiction of all time to ever exist and that ever will exist ever ever ohmygoditsjustsogood. Really keep that in mind by the way... one of the top two fanfictions of all time (in my opinion) is in THIS fandom, meaning you have actual reason to read it you lucky duck! In this, Draco ends up going with the Golden Trio on their hunt for the horcruxes. It’s a long fic and EXTREMELY slow burn, but oh my god is it worth it! It’s sad, it’s heartwarming, it’s enlightening, it’s romantic, and it’s hot as fuck (jesus). Just a warning for anyone who’s sensitive: I do think I need to say that as someone who almost never cries, let alone gets triggered to by a piece of fictional media, this is one of the only things I’ve read that’s ever made me cry. So yes, it’s a tear-jerker. But definitely not the whole thing! It’s not a SAD fic, it just has sad parts, as any good (and long) story tends to. But even it actually drawing a reaction that strong out of a reader just further proves how powerful and amazing this fic is. For your own sake, read it!!! And if you're still not convinced, consider yourself triple dog dared.

“Draco, listen to me - you have to -”

“I’m not leaving you!” Draco says it through his teeth, his steely eyes determined and bright, and his cheeks flushed, but his words are as good as a confession. And Harry loves him, god, he loves him so much -

“I love you,” it bursts out, as natural as breathing, and Harry never wants to take it back. Draco’s eyes widen, and his fury flees from him as quickly as it came. Harry says it again because it’s the truth , and because Draco needs to believe it. “I love you Draco, and I swear I’ll come and I’ll find you, after all this is over - I promise you -”

Draco definitely moves first this time, and his lips taste like smoke and sweat and something deliciously unyielding as they part beneath Harry’s. Harry pours everything he has into the kiss, gives Draco everything he wants him to remember, and everything Harry wants to remember for himself.

Draco is first to pull back as well, his hands uncurling from Harry’s shirt as he catches his breath and rasps, “see you soon... Harry.”

And then he’s standing, his lips tugging up at one side, and he looks so invigorated that in the next second he’s wearing a full-blown grin that makes Harry feel warm in all of the right places. “See you soon, Draco.”

They share one last look of longing, before Draco takes a step back and disappears around the corner, Zabini following him without a word.

Ron clears his throat. “That was one of the weirdest fucking things I’ve ever seen.”

There’s a noise that sounds suspiciously like Hermione giving Ron’s arm a slap, and Harry’s lips twitch into a smile.

Harry felt Malfoy's breath on his lips as they came together over the bottle, hands firmly planted on the floor as though they each needed their familiar soil, refusing to cross into enemy territory. Except that Malfoy no longer felt like his enemy. Malfoy felt inevitable.

This was the first fic I read that included a Drarry/Jilly-patronus situation and let me tell you it does not disappoint. Eighth year. Party games (spin the bottle, twister, other things that could result in feelings both emotional and sexy-times physical). Harry owns a car. Artwork. Harry tutoring Draco. Amazingness. It’s beautiful, it’s hot, it’s romantic, it’s sweet. I’m not doing a good enough job at describing it because I don’t even know where to start. I can picture everything when I read it - I feel like I’m there in the moment with them feeling their emotions and touching their surroundings. It’s just so lovely.

“What have you done to me?” Draco wailed. “What have you...?” The Patronus diminished.

And Harry finds out that there's more than one way to torment someone.

Yet another one of those Harry And Draco Are Forced To Be Together By Something Beyond Their Control And Then Stuff Happens Leading To Two Wuv stories.

This fanficiton is phenomenal. It's funny, the characters feel so real to how if this bizarre situation actually happened to teenagers in a magical world, here's how they'd react. It's so so so so so so so hot. It's really interesting just mystery and magic wise - world building and narrative is VERY well done. But my favorite piece about it is how natural it feels. Drarry are bonded, so they're forced together. What does that look like? It looks like silencing charms for when their friends come over and they want to hang out without having to listen to a group of people they don't like goofing and gaffing. It looks like going through a sheet of therapist-perscribed get to know you questions and doing things like saying each others' names out loud for the first time, eating sandwhiches together, missing classes from the condition and having to spend even MORE time together. Lucius Malfoy is so well done. I'm rambling (4am alert) but it's good. It's really really good. I reread it an absurd amount.
