A 2,300-year-old Scythian chariot from the Pazyryk culture, dating to the 5th–4th centuries BC, was discovered in the Bolshoy Ulagan burial mound in the Pazyryk Valley, Altai.

This large chariot is one of the most remarkable finds from the fifth Pazyryk burial mound. It is made primarily of birch and has a body consisting of three interconnected frames supported by columns, with a platform formed from cut leather straps. A canopy resembling a gazebo is installed on the platform.

The huge wheels, each with 34 spokes, were reinforced with glued birch bark for added strength. The unique design of the chariot allowed it to be disassembled for manual transport across difficult terrain, such as mountainous areas, rather than being transported by traction.

Okay, this is pretty incredible. A 3D artist, consulting scholars and archaeologists, worked for a year and a half in Blender to create a reconstruction of pre-Columbian Tenochtitlán, complete with the surrounding landscape. It’s staggeringly beautiful, and—at least to me—gives a wonderful impression of the city as a place where people worked and lived and worshiped
