Dracena fragrans: striped dracaena, compact dracaena, and corn plant (not the real Zea mays🌽 though!)

Dracena fragrans grows native throughout tropical Africa and are popular houseplants loved for their ability to thrive in a variety of conditions. Named for their fragrant flowers although mine has never flowered in the 13 years it’s been in my possession.

They are prone to getting brown leaf tips if you don’t let your water rest for 24hours to dechlorinate, so if they start going brown, it’s likely chlorine in the water. I never think ahead, so I’m very good at trimming the dead leaf tips to make the plant look a little fresher.

Strelitzia reginae: bird of paradise, crane flower, or isigude in Nguni

Indigenous to South Africa where they are an evergreen perennial, Strelitzia reginae was introduced to Kew Gardens in Britian in 1773 and has been widely cultivated since for its dramatic flowers and grows well anywhere warm and sunny. It doesn’t like to live below 50°F (10°C) so for me in the PNW it’s a houseplant with optional summers outdoors.

Birds of paradise hold a special place in my heart as they remind me of summers spent at my Dad’s in California when I was growing up. Somewhere in my third or fourth year of dating Maestro I’d decided we were serious enough that it was time to introduce him to the huge part of my soul that lives in California (where we grew up being called “Californian” was pretty much a slur 🙄, so it was scary inviting him to see these places that brought me so much joy and love). During our visit to the San Diego Wild Animal Park, Maestro suddenly shouted at me,

“Holy shit!! What are these flowers?!? They’re fucking amazing!”

“Oh, those? Those are birds of paradise. See how the flowers look like crane heads?” I tell him as I point out the details.

“Wait, what? They do look like birds! ?!?!?WHY DIDN’T YOU EVER TELL ME THESE EXISTED?!?!?”
