Why did you start creating art for Allegiant/The Divergent Series? Before the third book came out, there was a challenge for the fans to make their own version of the Allegiant book cover. I gave it a shot and posted my entry on Tumblr. The attention it got made me feel how supportive the Divergent fandom is. So basically, everyone’s burning passion towards the series encouraged me to make and share more Divergent fan art. What drew you to this fandom? There are many things that drew me to be a part of this fandom (e.g. <4), but I think my love for the story itself was the force that pulled me in the strongest. I love how Divergent explores many aspects of being a teenager including figuring out one’s identity, romance, courage and sacrifices. What was your process for creating art for the Allegiant Collector’s Edition like? I revisited key moments of the book and collected photos to make a mood board for the pieces. After various initial sketches, I chose a futuristic, precise and linear theme. I felt like this approach reflected the Divergent world and eventually served as the foundation of the two artworks. How does it feel to have your art included in the Allegiant Collector’s Edition? EXCITING! To have a piece of me become a part of something I truly love is one of the best things in the world. How does the Divergent Series inspire you? Divergent inspires me to be brave. When I am faced with a challenge but all I want to do in response is to run away and avoid them, I remind myself that if Tris can survive Dauntless initiation despite the fact that nobody believed in her at first, I can survive final exams.

It’s super amazeballs to be one of the artists who contributed for the Allegiant Collector’s Edition. I love the Divergent series so much and to have my artwork on a page of a book I tremendously love is crazy. I used to stay up all night reading every book. Tris taught me that “selflessness and bravery aren’t all that different”, and I believe that with my whole heart. Thank you, Veronica Roth, for building the world of Divergent and for Tris, Four, Caleb, Christina and everyone else.
