We know of only a few examples of heart-shaped Books of Hours, all dating from the 15th or the 16th century. Here is the list of the four presented here:

“An expedition to the jungle villages of the Maruba and Ticuna tribes in the Amazon leads explorer Norman Elder to high adventure. A Cessna drops him on a remote tributary of the mighty river to seek their isolated hunting and gathering communities.

Elder slowly wins the acceptance of these proud and shy people. He is finally able to photograph and tape their village life. A monkey hunt turns into a nightmare when he is left behind and lost on a jungle trail. Another journey takes him deeper into the dense jungle to a religious ceremony and secret Ticuna fertility rites. Back near the frontier village of Tarapaca, Elder hunts alligators from a dugout and collects large constrictors from the mysterious swamps at night.

Living in a special harmony with nature, the natives of the Amazon have a special wisdom and confidence in dealing with an awesome environment. These qualities provide the author with a touchstone by which to judge his own society’s moral problems and evaluate our concept of progress.”
