CVD vs HPHT: Growth Method Is Not a Quality Grade

CVD and HPHT are often discussed as if one automatically produces a “better” lab-grown diamond.

That is too simple.

CVD stands for Chemical Vapor Deposition. HPHT stands for High Pressure High Temperature.

They describe two different growth methods.

Both methods can produce gem-quality lab-grown diamonds. When evaluating a finished stone, the individual diamond still matters: cut, color, clarity, carat weight, dimensions and grading information should be considered together.

Before comparing lab-grown diamond jewelry, verify six things:

The listing clearly identifies the stone as laboratory-grown or laboratory-created.

Any grading report can be matched to the stone and checked with the issuing laboratory.

Cut information and measurements are reviewed alongside carat weight.

The actual stone is inspected in more than one lighting condition when possible.

The metal, setting construction, size and resizing options are clear.

The return window, warranty, repairs and exclusions are understood before purchase.

Lab-grown diamonds and moissanite are often discussed together, but they are different gemstone materials.

A lab-grown diamond has the crystal structure and fundamental composition of diamond. Moissanite is made from silicon carbide and has its own optical properties and visual character.

Both can be used in meaningful jewelry. The useful question is not which one is universally “better,” but whether the buyer understands what the stone is, how it is described and which appearance fits the design they want.

Clear disclosure matters. Product descriptions should accurately identify the stone, metal, setting and any grading documentation included with the jewelry.
