Star Wars has always been big on locations and sets showing growth in characters. In the first picture, Rey is on Jakku. A desert planet where water is so scare that it’s the most valuable thing out there. It’s dry, barren, and devoid of all life. In the beginning, Rey is completely isolated from the force and the galaxy at large. She has no family or friends.

Luke’s planet however, is an ocean planet dotted with islands. Water surrounds it, waves lap at green shores. Ocean currents hug the rocky ground. In the end Rey has entered a larger world. She has discovered the galaxy wide war between the dark and the light, and also that she is a part of that fight. She has discovered the force and along the way, a family.

So what we gather from this is that water, for Rey, symbolizes home, and a belonging not only in the force, but with her friends and newfound family.
