Eliza Dushku Speaks Out on Sexual Harassment, Firing and Retaliation on CBS’ ‘Bull’ for House Judiciary Committee

Eliza Dushku shared her experience facing sexual harassment on the set of CBS' "Bull" in front of a House Judiciary Committee.

In 2016, Dushku had a recurring role in Season 1 of “Bull” that was meant to become a regular role, but she alleges that she was fired from the show after accusing star Michael Weatherly of sexual harassment. She received a $9.5 million settlement from CBS, the Boston Globe reported in 2018.

“I was told that the role would be a six-year commitment to play a smart, strong leading lady, a confident high-powered lawyer meant to counterbalance the existing male lead, and that the role had been written specifically with me in mind,” Dushku said. “However, in my first week on my new job I found myself the brunt of crude, sexualized and lewd verbal assaults. I suffered near constant sexual harassment from my co-star. This was beyond anything I had experienced in my 30-year career.”

The male co-star “frequently referred to me as ‘legs.’ He would smell me and leeringly look me up and down. Off script, in front of about 100 crew members and cast members, he once said that he would take me to his rape van and use lube and long phallic things on me and take me over his knee and spank me like a little girl. Another time he told me that his sperm were powerful swimmers.”

The reason she won the lawsuit was because they had recordings from the outtakes of him saying these things.

During an interview with Cote she described him as being inappropriate during in their first audition, while reading the script together, Weatherly unexpectedly went off-book, touched her face, and ad-libbed that she reminded him of Salma Hayek.

Also Jessica Alba does not talk about their engagement, only stating he should have known better. She was a naive 18 year old virgin in a show that could make or break her career and he was 30 and already established. She felt she never had a voice in the relationship.

Even thought Cote ended up doing the whole Ziva thing, I think it speaks to how women are expected to put up and shut up if they want a decent career in that industry at the time.

You still said you watched an interview that LH did, on either of your blogs. So, if it was in a magazine you would have said “you read”, not watched. You watch videos but read magazines. Also, I have asked for you to provide proof of your claims but I’m still waiting for anything. Show us where LH talked about MH.

First. Maria leaving has only been reported by media, not confirmed by NCIS or Maria herself yet. So it might not be true. But for the sake of this post, let’s assume it is.

The easiest question to answer here is will I keep watching NCIS once she’s gone. The answer is no. Of course not. I do like some of the other cast members but I don’t like them enough to keep watching a show whose culture I simply don’t agree with. (If MH were to leave, there’s some speculation that he might only have a few seasons left lol, and the show were to continue I might consider coming back to the fandom, but that’s not what we’re talking about here).

I want to make VERY clear. I do NOT know why Maria is leaving. I do know the showrunners had the first 4 episodes already written (cause of COVID shortening last season) and some plans for the new season. I also know a few months ago Maria was saying how much she wanted to come back and wanted the show to be renewed. What is not clear is whether something happened that made Maria change her mind. Or whether the showrunners changed their plans and are forcing her to leave.

I have no idea if anything has happened between MH (or any other cast/crew member) and Maria. BUT I do believe she is the type of person who would come forward or do something about it if it had. That might not be until after her last episode airs but I do truly believe that if someone hurt or threatened her, she will not let it go or let them get away with it. So I guess only time will tell.

Am I happy she’s leaving? It all depends on why she’s leaving. If this was a CBS/showrunner decision then no I’m not. If this is what Maria wants then I’m happy as long as she’s happy and safe. But I’ll still be a bit sad not to have my fave on my tv consistently. And if it was a bullying issue then I’m furious, but happy that she’s looking after herself. So yeah, can’t really decide how I feel (or at least not anything beyond sad that she won’t be on tv for a while) until I know more information. Also I know she’ll get lots of other jobs, I’m not getting the vibe that she wants to retire, so I’m not super worried or anything.

Anyways, now to my reply:

Instead of replying with a simple “I don’t know why Maria is leaving” you are presenting your followers with suggestions, putting ideas into their heads. I’m not sure if that was your intention all along just so you can get more attention and support Perrette’s smear campaign or if you were truly so naive to think that it wouldn’t hurt to put out some very biased and uninformed suggestions.

I think the show would pull at least 3 seasons with no MH but that’s just my opinion.

Idk what your issue is with me mentioning the racism, sexism, and homophobia on the show because I see other people talk about it on tumblr constantly. I don’t mean bts I mean on screen. Our only gay character being killed off. Very few minorities and some being killed off or treated badly (to be fair this is improving). And women being treated like shit constantly. This is what’s on screen, it backs up what Pauley says, sure, but I wasn’t saying anything that hasn’t been said by others.

As for proof, I have seen some that isn’t in the public eye. But I’m not allowed to share it. I wouldn’t disrespect my friends (or my idol) in that way. Now I know that gives you no reason to believe me. But I don’t really care because my friends who shared that with me are more important to me than a stranger on the internet. And by the way, both Perrette and Holly supported Weatherly. It seems that neither of them has any problem with sexual harassment (physical or verbally) when it’s done by a friend. Which is contradicting since both claim to have been victims of sexual abuse.

I think I thought, well, more liked hoped, because of how highly Maria has spoken about him that hopefully, Pauley’s accusations were false. And as Cote was on the show for 8 years and season 18 will be Emily’s 8th year as well…I don’t know…I just hoped because even if he hasn’t done something to them, 3 people is a pattern not just coincidence and I wouldn’t want to work for/with a man like that. 

Tbh I don’t really keep up with cast stuff and I don’t really know what happened, mainly because I tried not to think about it as I didn’t want to believe Pauley was making false claims but also didn’t want to think Mark had really terrified someone to that extent. 

However, since she left Pauley has constantly made digs at the show and if it was really as bad as she’s making it out to be why would she have stayed for 15 years? 

Also, surely there would be more claims if Mark wasn’t a nice person. He’s like 67, been on NCIS for 17 years and has done a range of other acting work. It’s highly unlikely that someone else wouldn’t speak out (Especially after Pauley’s claims). If he was bad I feel they’d also go through cast members quicker as people wouldn’t want to work with him but everyone (Apart from Jennifer Esposito) has stayed on the show for many seasons. 

Oh, well, fuck.

1. Harmon asked the network for support regarding the way Bellisario (old showrunner) ran the show and production. They worked up to 20 hours a day, 6 days a week, only got their scripts on the day of the shooting. Harmon never asked for Bellisario to be fired because he liked and respected the guy. When Bellisario refused to make any changes, the network made the decision to fire him because Sasha Alexander had already left because of those reasons.

2. Let’s continue with Sasha. Bellisario and Sasha both have said/confirmed that Sasha wanted out because of the heavy schedule. Bellisario told her that if she wants to leave then her character has to be killed. 

3. Lauren Holly, according to Perrette, only accepted the role on NCIS because she was after Harmon. Since I don’t believe anything Perrette said (about any of the members of the cast) I doubt that because Holly knew that Harmon was/is happily married. Several members of the crew have let it out over the years that Holly was bored because Jenny didn’t get many huge storylines. After she left, she has said in interviews on TV that she wasn’t happy with the fact that Gibbs and Jenny did not become a couple on screen again. My questions is: If he was so terrible, why did she want to play his lover on screen? Those scenes would have included at least some kissing scenes or scenes similar to the flashbacks we got of them.

4. Pauley Perrette is well documented false accuser and has lied on more than one occasion. She framed and still frames her ex-husband with accusions of stalking (she was caught stalking him), assaults (he allegedly branded the first letter of his name into her skin but there were no scars or anything), rape and much more. She set him and his wife of over 10 years up more than once. She got the judge that ruled over her cases against the ex-husband a job on NCIS. Notice that the ex-husband also used to work in the music department of NCIS.

Her ex-boyfriend Daniel Rivas had lost his career because she slandered him and claimed to have caught him in bed with his own sister. After he offered his testimony to her ex-husband, Pauley got him a job on.... NCIS.

Julie Klausner lost her job because of Perrette. Her former best friend was killed. After the friend, who had matching tattoos with Perrette, agreed to testify against Pauley in one of her many cases against the ex-husband her house was attacked but she survived. She moved in with her parents and then bang, another attack and the former best friend was dead.

A homeless man was arrested and prisoned because of her allegations. All of her statements regarding that incident had changed constantly and were very contradicting. But of course when she showed up in front of the camera only a couple of hours after the attack, her face showed zero swelling or bruises after she had been punched repeatedly in the face by the psychotic guy with murder in his eyes. No documents of his trial or anything. No witnesses.

I could go on forever but the biggest thing is that she claimed that de Pablo & Emily only got their jobs on NCIS because of the famous casting couch. She stated that Murray, Henry and Esposito got the jobs either because of family relations or pity. She called Weatherly a pathetic drunk loser. I could go on forever since her fans were so nice to present their entire conversations in forms of screenshots to me.

Also, several people that worked on the show have stated that Pauley was the reason for a lot of drama behind the scenes because she refused to work with certain people.

Pauley’s fans love to twist the truth as much as Pauley herself does. Pauley’s good friends with Les Moonves who supported and protected her. She has Weinstein’s people on her payrole. She was caught on tape (audio and vision) admitting lots of things and even lying even more.

Why are people acting the world ends? Why are people ranting, complaining and demanding the show to end? I love NCIS, I love Ziva and I’m one of the many Tiva shippers and while I also would have prefered to see Ziva and Tony reuniting on screen, preferably with Tali, I don’t understand how people can actually act like they did/do in the tags.

There have been times when I was upset with a certain storyline or anything, I get that we all sometimes deal with emotions that have a very wide range from happieness to sadness and so on. And I think it’s okay if we feel those emotions for fictional characters but to go as far as some have done since 17x11 aired?

Going through the tag and reading certain things is really not healthy. I’ve seen people who are not into Tiva say that we shippers are obsessed and entitled. Until today, I never understood why anyone would say those things about Tiva shippers. Now I do. While I understand the wish for our favorite characters to be happy, I don’t think it’s something we are owed. We all know from real life that not everyone gets a happy ending or justice. And NCIS is a show that is mostly fictional, it also deals with a lot of real life issues (terrorists for example) and we shouldn’t forget about it.

But we do know that Ziva has her happy ending. She is free of her past and the dangers that sent her into hiding. She can finally go home to her man and daughter. I would have prefered to see their reunion on screen but this time, there is nothing that stops Tony and Ziva from getting together, there is nothing that stops Ziva being the mother to Tali she wants to be. Without the danger of her past coming back. So in the end, the happy ending did happen. And that is what the return of Ziva was about. Ziva had the team and Gibbs to help her deal with the dangers while Tony took Tali into hiding and made sure she’s okay. Because Tali is the most important person to Ziva, she’s her everything and Ziva risked her own life to make sure Tali would be safe. Always.

Now they are together. And we know that Senior is coming back this season. I get that Michael is busy with his schedule for Bull and his family and Robert might be having other projects or engagements so neither of them had the time for an appearance in 17x11. But we know they all have their happy ending.

Also, NCIS really is an ensamble show. True, some characters get more storylines and screentime than others but Ziva - in the 17th season - is a guest star. Her first 3 episodes this season were heavily about her and most of the main characters had to take the back seat. Which is in all honesty not fair. Neither to the actors, the characters nor their fans. It was absolutely okay that this episode was not all about Ziva. 

How many people were complaining we didn’t get to see Ziva interacting with Sloane, for example? How we didn’t get enough scenes of Ziva with this or that character. We finally got that in this episode. We also got to see Ziva struggleing with her emotions and fears. She got to say goodbye to her old team and the new people that have come to mean a lot to her, too. 

I guess I’m just trying to wrap my head around all this negativity when we have actually been given and blessed with a lot this season in regards to Ziva. 

It bothers me that other NCIS fans think of Tiva fans as entitled, obsessed and demanding and I hope they know that not every Tiva fan is like that.
