Chapter 4: Once More to See You
The next morning, Michonne woke up early and decided to get ready for the day, even though all she wanted was to sleep it away. She got up with a groan and an achy back, probably from all the lifting she'd been doing for almost three weeks.
Michonne began looking through her messy bed for her phone, which she'd haphazardly thrown in last night. Once she found it, she hoped to see a message from Mike, at least one asking to speak to Andre, but there was nothing. Instead, she saw an inbox message from Maggie.
"Hey, did you want to meet for breakfast before we go to my dad's? Lord knows you ain't gone grocery shopping yet."
Michonne couldn't help but smile at the phone. Maggie knew her so well. Michonne had not gone grocery shopping; she was too distracted by her welcome wagon.
"Of course, King County Café?"
Within a second, Maggie replied, "9:30."
Michonne looked at the time on her phone. It was 8:45. "Ugh! Maggie!" She quickly threw her phone back on the bed, then went downstairs to search her boxes for something she and Andre could wear.
Michonne found a pair of black jeans and a purple quarter-sleeve shirt for herself, and a Spider-Man shirt and a pair of jean shorts for Andre.
She quickly went back upstairs to change in her room. After she put on her clothes, she practically sprinted to the bathroom to brush her teeth and wash her face. She knew getting Andre dressed wouldn't be half as easy.
She went into Andre's room, well, Andre's room now, to wake him up. "Peanut," she said, shaking him softly. "It's time to wake up." He groaned and pulled the blanket over his face. Michonne rolled her eyes. He's impossible, she thought. "Do you want breakfast?" She was smirking now. "Breakfast." Andre popped the top half of his head out from under the blanket. All she had to do was say his favorite word, and he was ready for the day.
There was no fussing and fighting like there usually was, which was a pleasant surprise, Michonne thought. Maybe the rest of her day would be just as good.
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
Michonne walked through the doors of King County Café at 9:31. Maggie was already smiling at her. "Yer late," she said, tapping her watch with faux offense.
Michonne made her way to the booth where Maggie was sitting. Two cups of coffee and an apple juice already sat on the table, along with a booster seat for Andre. Maggie had thought of everything. "Sorry, Andre was talking forever." "Nah uh, mama," Andre said, scrunching his face up at Michonne. "Okay, I may or may not have left my phone in the house... and my car keys... my coat, but I was just trying to get here on time," Michonne rambled.
"It's okay, Chonne, I was jus jokin," Maggie said with a faint snort. Andre joined her, though he didn't get the joke, and Michonne gave him a soft push on his shoulder, then let out a small laugh.
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
The waitress quickly came by and took their orders. They all got a pastry: Maggie a blueberry muffin, Michonne a banana nut muffin, and Andre a chocolate croissant. Michonne knew he only got it because she read the word chocolate to him. The boy loved sweets, just like his mom.
"So, how's the farm, Hershel and Beth?"
"Fine, Beth is sixteen now, homeschooling, and she can't stand the high school." Maggie looked into her coffee cup and spun the spoon in circles.
"Mm-hm." Awkward silence fell. "Thanks for the inbox. I'm really glad it was you and not some local creep."
"I'm surprised you didn't reach out yerself. I can't believe I found out you were coming back through a goddamn Facebook post of all places."
"Bad word." Andre looks at Michonne. "Everyone keep saying bad words."
"Oh my god, I am so sorry, Andre. I didn't mean to say that—" She spoke frantically, looking between Michonne and Andre. Michonne couldn't help but bite her bottom lip to hold in her laugh. Maggie began to turn beet red before Michonne intervened.
"You're fine, Maggie, really. He met Daryl last night." The brunette felt relieved; she was a saint compared to the younger Dixon.
A beat of silence passed. "But seriously, why didn't you tell me you were coming back? Daddy told me he saw your post on the Facebook board."
Michonne was hoping she had forgotten that she had asked. She felt nothing but guilt and shame. Why didn't she message Maggie directly? She couldn't even say it was because of her pride; if anything, it would be because of shame. Shame at being in a failed relationship with Mike after everyone said it was a bad idea. Shame because she left for years without contacting her best friends because of Mike. Shame that she couldn't keep her relationship together, not even for her child.
"I didn't know how. We left things pretty messy before I left, and I haven't been able to come to terms with the fact that I was wrong about everything." Michonne said it so fast she could barely process it; she just needed it out.
"I'm sorry about before." Michonne didn't want to go into too much detail, considering Andre is still very much tuned into the adult conversation happening in front of him.
"I knew you were right, but you know my parents. I needed someone, and they liked him a lot. They wanted him to be my high school sweetheart, even if we were on-and-off for four years. I wanted something different, but I couldn't have it, so I settled, but we see how that ended up." Maggie hadn't heard this much emotion in Michonne's voice since the last time they spoke face to face. She felt bad for Michonne.
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
When the pair first split ways, Maggie was resentful and didn't even want to hear Michonne's name mentioned. Why would she? She dropped her best friend for a complete asshole.
But little did Maggie know that she would miss her best friend every day for the next 12 or so years. She'd miss staying up late at Michonne's house and waking her parents up with their laughing fits, their late-night car rides to pick up other friends. Everything felt wrong when Michonne left, but Maggie couldn't swallow her pride long enough to contact her.
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
Maggie sighed, closing her eyes. "Michonne…I'm also sorry. I could've contacted you, too." She opened her eyes again. "We were so young, but I missed you, Chonne. It was so hard to see you go with him. But I stalked yer Facebook often, ya know, to keep up."
"Me too," Michonne replied in a quiet voice before they both let out obnoxious laughs.
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
With the previous conversation breaking the ice, the two women began to catch up. Michonne knew Maggie and Glenn were still together because of Maggie's never-changing relationship status on Facebook. But Michonne didn't know that Maggie and Glenn had recently moved off the farm into a rental together until their house was ready. Maggie said Hershel had let her stay at home for so long because he was basically getting free farm labor from her and free pizza from Glenn.
"How's Andrea since I've been gone?'
"She's been good. She's like a big-time lawyer now." Michonne was only half listening, not really caring.
"What about Rick?"
Maggie raised an eyebrow. "Grimes? He's a sheriff's deputy for King County now. And he has a kid now, too. I don't know how old; we don't really talk anymore, just mainly him and Glenn."
"Hm. Married?" She sipped her lukewarm coffee, trying to seem nonchalant. Maggie shrugged and started talking about other classmates from the past.
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
After the women had chatted for nearly two hours, the coffee was cold, the food had been eaten, and the bill had been paid 30 minutes ago. Then Maggie got a text from Beth, who was now wondering where they were. "Oh, we gotta go, Beth is wondering where we are." The brunette began to scoot out of the booth, and Michonne followed, bringing Andre with her.
"Just follow my car."
Michonne rolled her eyes. She knew where Hershel lived, for God's sake; she had learned how to ride horses on that very same farm. "I know where the farm is, Maggie."
"I wasn't sure. You were gone for so long; God knows what you remember." Sarcasm dripped from her tongue.
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
The two women drove in their separate cars to the Greene farm, and when they arrived, an excited Beth was waiting for them with Hershel beside her.
Michonne parked where she always used to park in high school. The big tree in front of the Greene house provided great shade and kept her car from overheating, which she loved.
"Some things never change," Hershel said with a chuckle to Beth, even though she had no clue what he was talking about.
Michonne got out of her car and unbuckled Andre, who was basically dead from boredom. His mother felt bad that he hadn't actually made any friends yet, as she had promised him, only her old ones, who were far too old to have playdates with him.
She carried her son to the front porch, where she let him stand on his own because she was excited to see Hershel and Beth again. It was like they were completely different people now. Hershel had aged since the last time she'd seen him, and Beth was basically a new person; she hadn't even said her first words when Michonne left.
"I'm getting so old," Michonne joked while looking at Beth. She couldn't believe she'd been gone for that long. "You probably don't even remember me."
"No, but I hear stories from Maggie and Daddy. I have pictures of you, too."
Michonne smiled and started to speak, but was only pulled into a hug by Hershel. "I've missed you, Michonne. Can't use a phone these days?"
"I'm so sorry, Hershel. It's been a crazy time since I left." She looked at Andre, who was now talking to Beth, and Maggie, who'd finally made it to the front porch.
Over the years, Michonne debated messaging Hershel, but in the end, she always went against it; she was too embarrassed by how her life had turned out. She wasn't ashamed of Andre, just his no-good father. Michonne let Mike take her sparkle and her confidence after all those secluded years; she didn't even make new friends in Atlanta, had no social life outside of work, and even then, she mainly spoke to children.
"Maggie told us about your little bug; she found out through Facebook. Seems like we were both getting information that way."
"I'm sorry, Hershel, I've been trying to find a way to reconnect with everyone back here, but I left on such a sour note, I didn't know how to fix it. I still don't, sorry, it seems so blah." She was rambling like she used to in high school, and Hershel still found it entertaining. But he was also concerned about the woman standing before him; she was small and unsure, and that wasn't the Michonne he knew.
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
Hawthorne household, Senior year of high school
Michonne is sitting at the dinner table with her parents, trying to figure out what she should do with her life. It's not like she didn't know what she wanted to do after high school; she wanted to do elementary education. She didn't know what to do with Mike.
Michonne told her parents that she didn't want to stay with him, but they weren't hearing it. She's broken up with him multiple times throughout high school, but he kept coming back, and she let him. They wanted her to marry him. Michonne always envisioned someone else as her groom.
"I just don't understand, sweetie. Why don't you want to stay with Mike? He's been such a good boy to you. His mother and I have been talking about a perfect venue for the wedding," Michonne's mother says while cutting into her food.
The younger lets a puff of air escape her lungs before answering. "Because he's so immature, and he's not ready to grow up. Why are you talking about a wedding anyway? It's too early for all of that."
Michonne's mother put down her silverware. "Is there someone else you'd rather marry than your long-time boyfriend?" Great, her mom is playing stupid, yet again.
"Technically, he's not my 'long-time boyfriend'; we've taken breaks."
Michonnes father decided to step in, feeling suspicious after that statement," And in those breaks, did you see anyone else?"
"What! No!" Michonne Hawthorne was a big fat liar.
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
After the mini-reunion on the porch, Hershel ushered everyone inside to get more comfortable. In the house, Annette was preparing sweet tea for everyone.
"Finally, I thought I was gon' have to drag y'all in by your ears." She says with a wide grin.
"Sorry, dear, we got caught up in conversation."
Everyone settles around the dining table, and Michonne decides it's time to talk about what she's mainly here for: introducing Andre and Beth. But one look across the table and Michonne can see they're already pretty comfortable with each other. Andre is sitting on Beth's lap, pretending to be reading whatever book she has open.
Michonne smiles, "Hey Beth, I want to tell you a few things about Andre before I leave him with you tomorrow. He's not really an early bird, so he will probably go back to sleep when he gets here in the morning. But once he's up, he'll be bouncing off the walls…"
The darker-skinned woman went on about Andres' likes and dislikes, trying not to forget anything detrimental.
By the time everyone's done talking, it's lunchtime, and Michonne wants to get back home to continue unpacking her necessities before her busy week.
Michonne begins saying her goodbyes to the older members of the Greene family, hugging Hershel extra tightly and promising to keep him in the loop. When it was time to say bye to Maggie, Michonne didn't hesitate to hug her; she missed Maggie more than anyone would know. They exchanged short goodbyes before Michonne went to pry Andre from Beth.
"Come on, Andre, we have a busy day tomorrow." The smaller boy pretended he couldn't hear his mother, continuing to play with the toys Beth brought out of her closet.
"Andre, I'll bring you back tomorrow, and you can play with Beth all day while I'm at work. Sounds like a plan?" That seemed to catch the boys' attention.
"Moorrow?"
Michonne nodded. "Yes, but we would have to leave now so you can pack the toys you want to bring and take a bath so you won't be stinky." She's holding her nose to dramatize her words.
And with that, Andre is up and by Michonne's side in an instant, waving bye to all the Greene family members.
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
Once Michonne and Andre get home, Michonne is in pure focus mode. She puts on classical music not because she likes it, but because it's the least distracting genre, in her opinion.
She gave Andre the task of putting his favorite toys into a go bag for Beth's house, knowing he would get distracted and stay out of her hair for at least an hour. While Andre was distracted, Michonne unpacked clothes, her favorite kitchen towels, and bathroom essentials. It's only Sunday, but she couldn't wait for the weekend to come so she could finally rearrange the house properly; she could only hope her parents wouldn't mind.
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
Andre got bored with his toys around the hour mark, just as Michonne predicted.
"Snack! Snack!Snack!"
Michonne groaned at the sound of a fussy toddler. "We don't have any snacks, Peanut. We haven't been to the store."
"Snack."
"No."
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
In the end, Andre won the argument, and within 20 minutes, they were done with the grocery store's snack aisle and headed to the refrigerated section.
With the basket half-filled with random snacks for Andre to take to the Greene farm and food for Michonne to pack for lunch, she began to wander the store for ideas for tonight's dinner.
"Frozen food?" She whispers to herself as she turns her cart into the aisle.
Andre looks, turns his head back and forth in the cart, trying to see his surroundings. "Pizza?"
"Okay, we can do that." As Michonne opens the freezer to pull out a frozen pizza, she hears a small voice a small distance away.
"See, Mom, they're getting pizza, why can't we get any pizza?" He was whining now.
Michonne grabs her pizza and puts it in the cart, looking toward the source of the voice, and sees a little boy about four years older than Andre, give or take. He was grabbing onto his mother's cardigan. His mother looked so familiar to Michonne, a slender woman, pale, with long brown hair and hazel eyes. But Michonne just couldn't put a name to the face.
The little boy looks Michonnes' way, and the first thing she notices is his eyes, piercing blue, familiar.
"No, Carl, your dad wants spaghetti tonight, so spaghetti it is." The woman seemed annoyed by the situation, which made Michonne feel as if she were interrupting a private conversation between a mother and her son.
"But mom-" Was the last thing Michonne heard before she left the aisle, not wanting to cause more tension with her dinner decisions.
Michonne calls it quits and checks out, deciding to go back to the grocery store after work tomorrow.
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
Once the Hawthornes are back in their home, the rest of the day is filled with preparation. They have a busy day ahead of them tomorrow.

Chapter 1, 2
Note: Hey guys! This chapter is kinda mid, sorry! I’ve been trying to practice writing with a southern accent. I’m from the south myself, but writing with an accent is actually so difficult. And I don't want to mischaracterize TOO much ughhh. If you notice an inconsistency in the way Daryl speaks, just know it's my fault.

Chapter 3: Home
Michonne thought about her answer for a second. “Of course!” Daryl looks both ways before crossing the road to Michonnes' house. “Thought yer parents finally gave up the place,” Michonne chuckled, “No way, you know they love this place probably more than they love me.” Michonne knew she was joking, but deep down, she felt like it could be true. Pushing her negative thoughts away, she began to pick up the box she had dropped to see if she had any salvageable pieces.
Daryl was quick behind her as well, picking up the pieces that managed to fall out of the box on the way to the ground.“Y’know that’s not true, Michonne.” He looks at her as she's still sorting through shattered glass. “Yeah, I know. Just joking,” She says the last part quietly, feeling like a little girl again.
The only thing in the box that didn't shatter was a rubber ball Andre snuck in. She held up the bright red ball to show Daryl.
“Think fast.” In a matter of seconds, the ball is bouncing off the side of Daryl’s head. She couldn't contain her laughter, doubling over with her arms crossing her stomach. Daryl couldn't help but join in; he hadn't heard her laughter in so long, and it was so contagious. “C’mon, we gotta get the rest of the stuff inside,” Daryl said in between laughs.
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
As they begin to bring the boxes inside, Miconne tells Daryl to put everything in the living room. Andre is still sound asleep on the couch. Daryl uses his thumb to point at the sleeping boy with a quizzical look on his face. And Michonne just points to the front door. They step out onto the front porch. Her parents kept it neat; a swinging bench seat hung from the ceiling with a small table beside it. She gestures for them to sit.
“That's Andre Anthony, my son, he's three.” She couldn't help but feel pride when she spoke about her little peanut. Daryl seemed to put pieces together in his head, and that puzzled Michonne. “ ‘N I thought yer parents had a secret daughter that had a kid.” He says, shaking his head. “What?” Michonne was very confused by his statement. Did her parents talk to him? Did he know about Andre?
“My father passed three years ago. I didn't know where to go, so I came here. I didn't expect yer parents to be home, wah, just gonna sit on the porch. But they were here, asking what I was doing sittin’ on their porch at odd hours .” He stops talking for a minute, and they both sit in silence, just looking straight ahead, processing.
He cleared his throat before saying, “I told them my pop died. ‘N needed somewhere comfortable ‘n familiar. So, they let me in and told me ‘There's always life with death’ or whatever.” He shook his head, looking down, and Michonne chuckled. “Yeah, sounds like my parents.”
Daryl looked at her. “They told me they were expecting a grandson at any minute, the ‘life’ that's why they were back in town. Didn't know you er the mom.”
Michonne let out a loud laugh. “Daryl, you know for a fact that I don't have any siblings.”
“Yeah, I know. I was just hopin’ it wasn't you, since you left with Mike.” Silence. Even when she and Daryl stopped talking, she knew he thought Mike was a dipshit; everyone did. “Yeah, well, it was me. And there's no more Mike. I’m a free woman,” She said, wiggling her ring finger in front of Daryl's face. A small smile creeps up his face, “Mmm, lucky you, maybe you’ll find someone nea-” He's interrupted by a small cry. “I’ll be right back.”
Michonne quickly went inside to see if Andre was alright, hoping he didn't fall off the couch. She was relieved to see he was still on the couch, but with tears welling up in his big, brown eyes. “Left me.” Her heart shattered for her baby boy. “I would never leave you, peanut. I was outside with a friend, Come here.” She began to walk to the couch to pick him up and take him outside.
Daryl is still sitting when Michonne comes outside with a mini version of herself. “Damn, Michonne, did you make em yer self? Looks like you copy ‘n pasted em.” Dayl chuckles.
Andre scrunched up his face. “Bad word”
“Shit, ‘m sorry.” Michonne cringed at the interaction. Looking at the little boy in her arms, she figures it's time to introduce the two. “Andre, this is Daryl, one of Mommy's old friends from when she was little like you.”
“Hey buddy,” Daryl said, reaching his hand out to give the smaller an awkward shake. But Andre had other plans. He wiggled his way out of Michonne's arms and ran to Daryl. Michonne tried to catch him, but it was too late, and he had already crossed the small space to take Daryl into a big, fat hug.
He couldn't stop giggling, “Mommy friend!”
It broke her heart a little to hear him say that, considering she didn't really have any friends back in Atlanta. “Andre, your own bubble.” She was kind yet firm. She was still trying to teach him about boundaries. “It's fine, needed it.” Daryl was shrugging while still holding the little boy in a hug. Michonne didn't even fight it and just sat next to the two boys with a sigh.
Michonne and Daryl spent the next thirty minutes giving a PG rerun of their lives from the time missed. Andre was there and very attentive, so they had to pick their words carefully and absolutely no talk about Mike. It was too soon for Michonne and Andre.
In the first week, Michonne spent packing the apartment, and Andre asked about his father every day, noticing his absence. The second week, he didn't even bother to ask about Mike. And Michonne didn't know how to handle being completely alone. She didn't want to let everything out on Andre; he didn't deserve that. But she feels like she's treading water, unable to catch a break.
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
With the sunset on the horizon, Michonne and Daryl are still catching up when the older lady with the pixie cut starts crossing over to Michonne's house. “Hello! I'm Carol, and I live across the street. I saw Daryl come over here earlier. I was coming to steal him back for dinner, and maybe you can come too.” She was showing all thirty-two.
Carol then catches a glimpse of Andre. “I have a little one at home too, not as little as…? ”Andre!” The little boy says without hesitation. Michonne takes a mental note to add stranger danger to Andres's learning list. “Andre, my daughter's name is Sophia. Would you like your mommy if she wants to come over for dinner?”
Andre looks at Michonne with his big brown eyes, pleading with his mother to go to the gray-haired woman's house, and she looks at Darly, not completely sure what to say. Not wanting to intrude. And like Carol was reading her mind, she added in a sweet voice, “You won't be intruding.”
“We can come over for dinner, thank you, Carol.”
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
Within ten minutes, Michonne and Andre were tucked in at Carol's dining room table with her family, including Daryl, who seemed very comfortable in this situation, so Michonne gathered that this was a normal occurrence. She's forgotten how much more intimate and friendly it was in King County versus Atlanta.
Andre was talking to Sophia a mile a minute about nothing in particular; he was just happy to see someone who wasn't an adult, even if she was nearly 6 years older than him. While the kids talked, Michonne stayed pretty quiet, only answering questions thrown at her, which felt like a million. “Have you lived here before? Is that how you know Daryl? Job? Married?”
She answered all of the questions as quickly as they were thrown at her, “Yes, from birth til graduation. Also, yes, Daryl and I were friends when we were kids. I'm a substitute teacher right now. I'm hoping they offer me a full-time position soon, and technically, yes, but only for six more weeks.” Michonne says the last answer is on the verge of inaudible.
Carol and Ezekiel seemed to understand what she meant and put on sympathetic faces for the woman. Ezekiel decided it was time to serve out the dinner he and Carol had prepared, a homemade pot pie, Sophia's favorite. “So, did you buy the house off the Hawthornes?” Ezekiel asks, looking at Michonne as he passes out dinner. Michonne couldn't hold back her laugh. “I am a Hawthorne. This is my parents' house. They're letting me rent it out for a while.” She uses the word rent very loosely. She had to beg them to take the little money they're getting.
“Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize those were your parents.” Ezekiel's usual good-humored demeanor was dimmed with embarrassment. Carol and Daryl exchanged a look before laughing simultaneously. Even Michonne joined in.
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
The adults got so lost in conversation that they didn't realize that it was nearly nine at night. They moved the conversation to the living room at some point for comfort. But as the night goes on, Andre gets more and more grumpy. Michonne noticed and decided to call it a night for everyone's sake; she didn't want them to see the tantrums Andre is capable of.
After saying goodbye to everyone with a sleepy Andre in her arms, they all walked her to the front door, and Daryl walked her back home.
“Glad yer back. Hopefully we can catch up more, like old times.” Michonne was relieved that Daryl didn't resent her. She was worried that he would still be upset with her for leaving, but he's not, and that gives her hope for her other lost friends.
“Glad to be back. We're definitely doing this again.”
Ending the conversation with a short hug, Michonne goes inside to start her and Andres' nightly routine. With extra steps, of course, she cursed herself for forgetting that she needed to unpack essentials.
By ten thirty, Andre was in her childhood room, tucked into her bed, and he was in the guest bedroom. Trying to work up the courage to sleep in her parents' room.
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
She thought about a lot before shutting her eyes. Michonne has a big day tomorrow. She has to go to the Greene farm to introduce Andre to Beth before she goes to work for the first time on Monday. The most nerve-racking part is that she'll have to talk to Maggie, too.
༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶ ༶
Note: Hey guys, sorry for making Carol's introduction kinda creepy, I don't know how to write introductions LOL! Also, sorry if the ending feels rushed, it's 2 a.m., and I'm kinda sleepy. Finished this chapter and there's still no mention of Rickkkk. This is so heartbreaking. I'm sorry, guys, please stick with me. AGAIN, sorry for Daryl's cringe dialogue.
First-ever fic writing Update
Writing my third chapter for my Richonne fic right now, I've been super excited about this fic, and everyone has been super nice about it so far. I REALLY appreciate it. So, thank you, guys, for being patient with my writing :D

Note: I literally don't know how to write a divorce announcement, sorry. And sorry for the time skip, I didn't plan what to fill it with. It’s kinda making this chapter chopped </3 This is really wordy, but still short?? I’m still taking advice on how to create a good flow :) Also, this is not dialogue or description-heavy at all. Trying to figure that out too, sorry! There's another note at the end.

Chapter 2: New Beginnings
Later that night, Michonne spent an hour getting Andre into bed because of his late nap at daycare. After she finally got him to bed, she spent a moment to take in the silence before speaking to Mike. She took a deep breath and walked out of Andres's bedroom and found Mike sitting on the couch watching TV, per usual.
“Mike, I have something serious I want to talk about,” Michonne says, still standing. He doesn't look away from the TV, “About what?” He mumbled, he wasn't really listening, and she knew. Michonne lets out a frustrated huff, “I got a job offer back home, a substitute teaching position. Andre and I will be leaving in two weeks.” Michonne said simply. She felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. Mike finally stops paying attention to the screen in front of him to look at Michonne. “You're going back to King County? For what? We agreed that we weren't going back th-” Michonne cuts him short. “We aren't going anywhere, Mike. It's Andre and me. I think we need to get a divorce.” He opened his mouth like he was going to say something, but Michonne continued, “I suggest you give up legal custody, you've basically been on a bender for the last year. That won't look good in court.” With that, Michonne decided to sleep in Andres' room for the night.

Two weeks later
Michonne was almost done packing up the small apartment by herself. Mike decided to leave the same night she asked for a divorce. He left a note telling her to mail the papers to his friend, Terry's house. She was relieved that he didn't fight her on it, but she couldn't believe he left without saying goodbye to Andre. Her sweet little peanut, he took the news of moving better than she expected him to. It's still going to take time for the divorce to settle, but Michonne has patience.
“You're going to make so many new friends, peanut,” Michonne says as she puts Andres' toys in a box. He smiles up at her, “Many friends?” He asked in a sweet voice. She nodded to him. “Yes! So many friends, peanut,” She beamed.

The other day, Michonne cringed as she posted on the King County community board about needing a babysitter for her son. She was relieved when a familiar face offered her sister, Beth. Michonne knew Maggie because they were best friends since they were younger, but lost contact due to distance and Mike causing issues in their friendship. Maggie is a strong, opinionated woman, and Mike was just an asshole. Maggie tried to get Michonne to leave him on multiple occasions, but she just couldn't bring herself to do it. He's the only guy her parents would approve of. That strained Michonne and Maggie's friendship, and then Mike proposed, which put a nail in the coffin.
The two women didn't keep in touch; they would occasionally like each other's posts on Facebook, but that was as far as they'd go. So, getting the inbox from Maggie saying Beth can babysit Andre was a relief and comfort, knowing they could rekindle their friendship.

Michonne finishes packing up her and Andres' personal belongings and loads them into her car. She decides to leave the furniture to Mike for when he comes back from Terry's house, if he comes back. She didn't need it anyway because she's renting her childhood home from her parents, who moved to Florida after they retired and kept the house only for sentimental value. They've been ecstatic to know she's moving out of Atlanta, only slightly disappointed that she's leaving Mike behind. She didn't care to tell them the entire story on why they're divorcing; she would rather take the blame than be embarrassed by him.
After packing Andre into the car, Michonne heads home to King County. The hour-and-a-half drive somehow turned into a two-and-a-half-hour drive because of the squirmy three-year-old in the back seat. The duo had to stop three times to go potty. Because Andre is being potty-trained and refuses to have accidents. But after every stop, he begs for apple juice, so the cycle continues. They had to stop for gas because Michonne's car is an absolute gas guzzler, and she forgot to fill it before they left.
Finally, they were on the final stretch of the ride, and Michonne was noticing buildings she hadn't seen in over ten years. One was a small cafe that she remembers because of the cute little cat sculpture she tried to convince the owner to give her. She smiles to herself. It didn't work, but it was worth the shot.

As she pulls into her old house, she's overwhelmed with nostalgia. Her parents kept up the place well; the paint still looks brand new, and the willow tree they planted for her as a child has grown stronger than ever. She rested her head on the steering wheel to grasp her thoughts before she woke Andre up. She sat up and let out a deep sigh, running her hands through her thick locs. Carefully opening the car door to step out, she took a deep inhale, smelling the country air, yet again. With her first true smile in a long time, Michonne took in the neighborhood. She waves at a neighbor across the road, an older lady with a short gray pixie cut that she's never seen before, and a man she assumes to be her husband. A slightly above average height man with light brown skin and gray locs tied in the back. They're outside playing with their daughter, a little girl with a short blonde bob and rosy cheeks.
Michonne looks away from the family to focus back on the task at hand, unpacking with a three-year-old. She picks up a sleepy Andre and carries him into the house, laying him on the brown leather sofa that her parents kept in mint condition. When she went back out to grab a few boxes from the car, she saw the neighbors across the street double and recognized a face: Daryl Dixon. She could recognize that man anywhere; they used to hang out in this very house when they were younger. They lost contact years before she moved because of his brother, Merle, and their father. They were too redneck and ignorant to allow him back into her home. Her heart ached for him, but she was glad to see he prevailed.
She grabs a box as quickly as she can, trying to avoid eye contact with her. Then she drops a box. Crack. “Shit.” Michonne shattered the few pieces of glassware she decided to bring.
All eyes are on her.
“Michonne?” A low, rough voice calls. She puts on a smile before slowly turning around. “Hey…” She wasn't expecting to speak to anyone so soon; she's completely unprepared.
“...Need help?” She doesn't know why she was surprised he offered help; he's always been helpful to her; it's like nothing's changed since they last hung out all those years ago.

Note: Tried to do some divider work, don't know how it will post. Still no Rick I’m sorry :[ But we have Daryl! I love the idea of them being friends previously. It also kinda ends abruptly, sorry. I derailed my own planning that I started over a year ago, so I’m just feeling it out as I go :/ It's also soooo hard to write for a kid </3 Anyway, everyone had been super nice, and I really appreciate it!!

NOTE: Ummm, this is pretty bad, but it's my first try at a fanfic. Can't get better if I never try. Also, I have to figure out how to make this look cool, so this is all you get for how, sorry. Also, I don't have a beta reader, and I'm dyslexic, so this is kinda giving hot garbage.
Summary: When Michonne gets a job offer that sends her back home, we follow her on her new journey of recovering her passion for teaching. Rick Grimes, however, recovers his passion for her. The only problem is that he already has a family he needs to focus on.

Chapter 1
They say you never know someone until you live with them. In Michonne's case, you don't know them until you live with them, marry them, and have a child together. Michonne Hawthorne thought she knew Mike, considering they grew up together, but she didn't even know half of it.
She wanted to make it work for Andre. She wanted him to have a father figure in his life. God, she wanted a husband in hers. But when Mike started working late and coming home smelling like cheap booze and weed, she knew she needed out. Out of this so-called marriage, out of this house, out of this city. She wanted the quiet back.
So, when she got a job offer back in her hometown of King County, she knew this was her only chance.
Dear Mrs. Hawthorne,
I am writing to you on behalf of King County Public Schools, and I am pleased to offer you the position of Substitute teacher… Contact us at 404-584-2168 for more information…
She was slightly confused about why she's getting this offer so late into the school year, but she pushes it aside for now. She hasn’t been back home in years and is just now realizing it. Memories with people she hasn't spoken to in ages. What will they say when she comes back, unmarried and with a kid? She shakes the thoughts away to focus on the now. How is she supposed to explain this to Andre? Mike didn't even cross her mind until she heard the front door open; she swiftly closed her laptop.
“Where's Andre?” She asked her husband. He looked at her, confused ‘What time is it?’ He’s slurring his words yet again. Michonne is furious; she gave Mike the benefit of the doubt that he would remember to pick up his own son from daycare. He didn’t, and she should've known better. Without a word, she put on a light jacket and walked out of their apartment. She could smell the alcohol on him as she passed and scoffed, “For God's sake, it's four in the afternoon,” she muttered to herself.
She hopped into her beat-up 2014 Chevy Cruze, and the engine sputtered to a start. “As long as it gets me from point A to B, " she sighs. It only took her a few minutes to make it to the daycare, a small building tucked between a flower shop and a library coffee shop fusion. Which is mainly why she picked the place; Andre loves to read, and his mother loves flowers; it was a perfect fit.
She quickly parked her car and rushed inside. “I’m so sorry, Mike was supposed to get him today and-” She was cut off by the daycare attendant, “It’s fine, Mrs. Hawthorne, naptime ran a little late anyway,” she chuckled and pointed to Andre sleeping on his assigned cot. Her hand on her chest, and her eyes closed, she let out a sigh of relief.
Michonne is not particularly close to the daycare attendant, but she knows enough about Michonne's personal life to understand she’s taken on both roles for her child. They talk a little about how busy their days were, especially because they both work with children, and summer is quickly approaching. The conversation reminded her of her job offer back home and how she would have to take Andre from his beloved daycare to a new, strange place.
“I got a new job offer,” She said in a quiet voice, “It’s back in King County as a substitute teacher.”
“That's so good, Michonne! Have you told Mike?” She shakes her head no. “He wasn't in the right state to hear about it just yet.” Still standing near the front desk, she sighs. “I’m- I’m going to ask him for a divorce.” She says lowly and slowly, finally accepting it for herself as she says it. Before the attendant could reply, Andre began to wake up. “I'd better get him so we can have dinner and let you go.” Michonne looked at her watch, and it was nearly 5 pm, and she felt like she had overstayed her welcome. She went over to Andre's cot to fully wake him up, “He's never going to get to bed tonight,” she thought to herself.
“Hey, peanut,” she says softly. “Ready to go home?”

Started writing a little and put my draft into ao3 just to see it, and my god, it's satisfying to see it set up like a normal fic

The only thing keeping me from writing The Pitt fanfics is the fact that I have NO knowledge about medical things. I know NOTHING about how a hospital works or what doctors actually do KMSKMSKMS
