the house was hidden, built in a clearing in some remote part of the valley, long gravel path overgrown & unpleasant on the wheels of the sleek SUV. he had guessed that the placement was strategic. technically, the boy was still missing. technically, the sheriff’s office should have custody. yet here he was, returned to where he started. the long grass rippled like water in the wind as they watched from their place, sat on the front stoop. beraiah’s foster parents rattled around in the kitchen, out of earshot. it was funny, the baptist hadn’t taken much interest in the boy until jacob staked his claim. the grass is always greener… but vincent didn’t complain. he never did.

“ he said that, huh ? ” vincent didn't like kids, but this one was the exception. maybe because he’d never really gotten to be one. maybe maturity was the fruit borne of having a “ father ” like that. of watching him get held, thrashing, underwater til he didn’t thrash anymore.

“ is it as bad as they say it is- training with jacob ? ” vincent had asked one of jacob's chosen after he'd heard the boy had been marked.

“ you askin’ for yourself ? ” the chosen had asked, not looking up from his gun as he cleaned it. “ I thought you were john’s little errand bitch. ”

vincent had chuckled. maybe he would’ve taken offense to it, but he didn’t have the time that day. “ no, for someone else. he’s been marked. ”

the chosen had grunted. “ say your goodbyes before he goes. chances are, he’s not comin’ back. ”

“ y’know, kid. ” vincent fished a cigarette from his jacket pocket, placing it between his lips & holding it there as he lit it. ember began to glow, smoke unfurling from his mouth as he pulled it away. “ they’ve got wolves up in those mountains. ” he looked at the boy, half a smile. “ you gotta be mature if you cross paths with one of those. they can smell it if you’re scared. ”
