I have never really played in a chamber music group, but if I had the chance, I would probably try to find a piano trio. It is not only one of the most popular ensembles in chamber music, but it is also my favourite. Normally, the piano trio consists of a group of three instruments, including the piano, the violin, and the cello, but other combinations are known as well.

The Baroque music period produced some of the most intense, dramatic, devotional, appealing, and simply most beautiful music imaginable. In school, we are all told that the Baroque music period falls between the years 1600 and 1750. “Baroque” is a very general and relatively recent term adopted for this historical period. And while no era starts and ends at the stroke of midnight, the bookmark years do designate important signposts. Baroque composers and listen to performances on Interlude.

When considering the piano repertoire, and piano instrumental music, we tend to focus on the big works in the canon – the great concertos and piano sonatas, and large-scale works like the Goldberg, Diabelli or Handel Variations, or the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. But many of the composers of these “big” piano works also wrote small, self-contained pieces which explore one or two sentiments, rather than a broad narrative or emotional sweep. Small piano works are the miniature gems of the repertoire. Piano Instrumental music, such as by Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin bring us the best in piano works.

The history of classical music, however, is full of fabulously gifted individuals with slightly more earthy ambitions. Love stories of classical composers are frequently retold within a romanticized narrative of sugar coated fairy tales. To be sure, happily-ever-after stories do on rare occasions take place, but it is much more likely that classical romances lead to some rather unhappy endings. Accompanying these stories of love and lust with the compositions they inspired, we are able to see composers and their relationships in a completely new light. For the 1949 MGM film the word “helluva” was changed to “wonderful” to protect delicate sensibilities. I’ve been to New York a couple of times, and it is still a helluva town. The city of New York was, and still is, home to countless famous music composers, so I decided to write a blog on celebrated composers either born in New York or famously active in that city.

Polish composer Frédéric Chopin changed Romantic piano music forever through his virtuosity. Frédéric Chopin was a renowned Polish composer who published his first composition at age 7 and began performing one year later. His example inspired composers and performers for centuries. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is more than the Bad Boy of Classical Music. His prolific and influential legacy has given us some of our most beloved classical music. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's first major influence was his own father, Leopold, who taught him how to play piano. We look at the purpose behind music theory, as well as music theory concepts like scales, octaves, counterpoint, polyphony, and more. In free classical music practice, basic musical elements function like a composer’s toolbox, and music theory can help to explain how this musical vocabulary can be “formed into extended thoughts, which assume significance.” I thought it might be fun to write about classical music on rudimentary music theory in conventional music practice by looking at some basic elements of classical music.

When it comes to famous classical music, however, we also still use basic bean counting methods. Dedicated sites measure the number of clicks, downloads and sales of digital bundles, CDs, vinyl and other formats across a given time period. But what makes pieces of classical music famous, regardless of stated musical preference, is “the emotional power to connect with the listener.” It has to be instantly recognizable, evocative and emotional, “complete with drama and tension as the music builds, which is then released ultimately in a wonderful resolving climax.” So let’s get started with the most famous classical music pieces and famous classical composers.
