Thoughts & Inclinations

How is it that we can say ‘know oneself’. To know oneself as, let’s say, name and age? What about identification through career or professional title? I am Jonathon and I’m a young media professional…still, this sounds somewhat empty.

This is an attribute and not remotely anything to do with the self, as is my family name, personal interests, and cultural identification. All of these are circumstantial attributes gathered through life progression. Through playing the game.

Is there something deeper observing these notions. Something looking through each of us? The knower. The knower of my memories. The knower of my personal growth and development. The knower of change. I mean, how can one know change, isn’t it a feeling?

You are not your thoughts or titles, these are just the attachments of the ego. You are the observer behind thoughts and emotions. You are the knower before memories and time.

Do not attach to the thoughts that enter the mind, most are intrusive and negative. Do not let the ego attach as the ego often chooses to identify and believe in all thoughts as to be facts about the self.

Carl Jung suggested (I paraphrase here) that in each of us ’there is another who we do not know’. Get to know this self and contemplate these ideas. In an ocean of thoughts, ideas, and choices who can know what is right and what isn’t. The observer. The real you. The one that’s been here all along just watching, Seeing as the observer of your mind, life, emotions, and choices.
