Manual Therapy For Providing Relief From Pain
Manual therapy is a specialized type of physical therapy done using hands rather than using any device or a machine. In manual therapy, the therapist uses pressure on muscle tissues and manipulates the joints to decrease the back pain caused by muscle spasms, muscle tension, etc.
There are various types of manual therapy techniques used by physical therapists to provide relief from pain or swelling in a person. Before providing manual therapy, the therapist usually assesses your blood supply in that area. They also perform an assessment of your bone and your muscles for deciding whether there is an increased risk of any complications from using manual therapy techniques for pain relief.
Various manual therapy techniques for pain management are as follows:
Muscle Energy Technique - Muscle energy technique is designed explicitly to mobilize the restricted joints and lengthen the shortened muscles. The procedure is defined as the utilization of the voluntary contraction of the patient muscles against a distinctly controlled counterforce being applied from a precise position in a specific direction by a practitioner. Following a 3-5 second contraction, the operator takes the joint to a new barrier where the patient again performs muscle contraction. It may be repeated about 2 to 3 times. The technique is considered an active procedure instead of the passive procedure where the operator performs all the tasks. It is seen that the muscle energy technique is tolerated well by a patient and doesn’t put stress on any joints in the body.
Soft Tissue Mobilization - It is essential for recognizing the role of muscles and their attachments around the joints. Muscle tension often gets decreased once the joint motion has been restored. But there are times when the spasms will continue to be present. In that case, muscle tension has to be addressed. Otherwise, it can lead to joint dysfunction in a person. The primary goal of soft tissue mobilization is breaking up the inelastic or the fibrous muscle tissue such as scar tissue from any injury in the back, muscle tension, etc. The procedure is most commonly applied to the musculature surrounding your spine, and it also consists of deep pressure and rhythmic stretching.
Joint Mobilization - It is very commonly seen that people get diagnosed with a pulled muscle in their back. These patients are often seen to have been instructed to use heat and ice therapy to treat the conditions. Using these techniques can make you feel good, but the pain may return after a few days because the muscle spasm responds to a restricted joint. Joint mobilization leads to loosening up of your restricted joints and thus increases the range of your velocity and increases the mobility of your joints. Joint mobilization is usually a painless technique unless the therapist or the operator approaches the barrier aggressively.
Manual therapy can be beneficial for treating the joints in a human body that lacks adequate mobility and range of motion due to specific musculoskeletal conditions. A certified physical therapist can be beneficial for providing manual therapy to treat pain in a person.
