New oneshot, my shortest yet! Jinshi gets aphrodisiac poisoned, but the "desires" he acts on aren't... exactly what one would expect from an aphrodisiac, and throw Maomao for a loop.

The Apothecary Diaries Light Novel 16: Maomao's character development and emotional growth
⚠️ Heads up: this post contains spoilers from the novel, and it contains major spoilers from the series in general not yet adapted in the anime or the manga adaptations.
Now that light novel 16 is finally available digitally in English, here are my thoughts. Before I dive in, I want to say that this cover is one of my top favorite covers of the series, look at how confident and mature Maomao looks.
I find it interesting how we were introduced to Kokuyou in novel 6, yet we finally got to see a backstory about him in novel 16. He had it rough! Despite all the smiles, and the cheerfulness, he lost a brother and a mentor in disturbing ways. He almost died, and was mistreated it for his scars. The surprising part is behind this cheekiness, apparently he can be a wicked person. Is he going to cause trouble? We'll see.
My favorite part is seeing how Maomao got troubled with the whole Kokuyou's situation. He's not a bad person, so she can't just throw him out like that. But, he might actually do bad things if confronted with a bad person, can she live knowing that anything can happen because she stayed silent about it? I loved her pondering upon this.
We had small moments where there's a throwback to the characteristic Maomao solving a case with Jinshi presenting the issue, the story of the cursed jar and how that was a facade to hide an abuse is really interesting. If Maomao felt bad or jealous about the thought of making the girl a concubine of Jinshi, even if it's just a front, she didn't show it. I loved how considerate Maamei and Chue were of her discreet feelings, and Jinshi was already firmed about the idea. There's no way that's going to happen so the girl got sent to Lakan's mansion. lolol.
Speaking of throwback, it's also nice seeing Lishu growing up, embracing humble life in the village. It's nice to see her in good health. She deserves to live in a peace.
When Jinshi went accompanying Maomao to the village, his disguise resembled Kokuyou's look. I can't help but imagine that this might be because lowkey, he wanted to look like how Maomao described Kokuyou. He was nervous of how she was talking about Kokuyou, he tends to feel jealous and threatened by any man who Maomao engages with, and has a positive impression of. Lihaku, Rikuson, and now Kokuyou. Maomao tried to put emphasis on their working relationship but Jinshi had to see the man himself I guess, and yeah, sure he wanted to see Lishu, too.
Funny that the first action he took when he was mistaken for Kokuyou during the attack was to protect Maomao. As if him getting harmed in the process is going to be just fine. I wished there was an official illustration to this scene.
The letters chapter had me laughing because Lahan sent a long neat letter only to be responded with a NO by Maomao, that was hilarious. Also Xiaolan's letter was adorable. It's so bittersweet seeing her writting to Maomao after learning her characters, she's so innocent. As usual, Jinshi loves to pamper his cat by sending her fancy tea instead of idle words. He knows that she loves gifts more than anything, especially if it's a useful herb or medicine. Also that empty paper he sent, did that somehow imply that he wishes to read what she writes instead? Maomao's response is cute, sending a cat paw, she's literally confirming that she's his cat as he described her earlier.
Although, it's an easy read with bits of stories here and there, I noticed it tried to lighten the weight of a potential smallpox horrors by showing easier to digest stories. Mainly, this volume showed more character development and emotional growth for our favorite cat, Maomao. She first was showing tolerance towards Lakan. I can't help but notice how she's getting comfortable around others, too. There are many co-workers who she interacts with casually nowadays, more than ever. She's getting more social, and is engaging with different people. This shows how she's gaining confidence and emotionally healing, hence the comment about the cover above.
That takes me to how much she have changed towards Jinshi. She's talking more openly to him (keeping the formal tone, though), she also grabbed his arm, whispered in his ear, shared her day with him in a letter and wanted to visit him when confronted with difficulty. I love that she had developed this sense of comfort when she feels bad, she would go directly to him. We saw that in novel 12, when she was about to get attacked and Chue almost died protecting her, she later on had the urge to go see him. It's now similar imo, it seems like, she assigned Jinshi as a stress relief whenever things get tight, as he does with her. She now understands his desire of "recharge" every time he faced distress and sought any physical contact from her. Despite all the inner denial and indifferences she tends to show, Maomao truly enjoys being with Jinshi. His persistence and good efforts paid off.
The fact she asked him if he wanted to become a commoner, as if she's wishing they were in different circumstances now. What would come after Jinshi's demotion? Marriage? Less responsibilities? Was she longing for all that while she was showing vulnerability by seeking physical contact from him? All I can say that they both are deeply connected with each other, even beyond words, and I love that for them.
i love them.
Love that maomao's attitude towards Jinshi is like "too bad this guy's a eunic, I bet everyone wants to fuck him. Men and women. Not me though. Not me." Like ooooookay girl
There's something to be said about how quickly and efficiently Jinshi got novels circulating in the rear palace following this accusation. Funny on one end, but also showcasing his commitment to the mention
Also seriously not wanting to give Gaoshun even the inkling of an idea that he's beginning to have interest in the opposite sex and risk the topic of getting a consort being raised again. I think it'd be particularly problematic for Jinshi is word of it gets to the Emperor, as he might take it as a sign this whole "masquerading as a Eunuch" thing is wrapping up
It's not 10 days later that the books have reached the rear palace, but 10 days they're already super popular. Meaning they've probably been circulating for at least a few days now. Jinshi managed to put an order for the books, have them delivered, and distributed to the consorts in like a week!
Also Mr I'm-lacking-in-intelligence never ceases to surprise me with his goddamn brains!
He knew to select "low-class" novels because then many of the consorts would be less protective of keeping this symbolic gift from the Emperor and would actually trickle down to the maids of the rear palace
And it seems Maomao already knew this was a topic of interest
i really like LN13 and i want to talk about why!
there is also some stuff about 14 and 15 in here but shhhhh
fundamentally LN13 has to be a reset, in the same way that LN5 was a reset because LN4 was once an ending, so was LN12. We need a narrative reset after a much heavier LN. We are also just moving into a new part of the story, and in much the same way LN5 and 6 set up a lot for the following major arc about the locust plague and relations with Shaoh and the western families of Li and Countries across the border, LN13-15 do the same for what i imagine is going to be a larger narrative about a potential smallpox plague.
LN13 is fundamentally about change. Everyone is changed by the past year, and if they haven't circumstance have that will force change from them. This is integral to the beat of the story that is LN13, the night visit, the relationship of Jinshi and Maomao and its consummation. Their surroundings are trying to force a change, (court, Jinshi's staff and family, the pleasure district, their stations) and they have both changed enough that they think this is achievable. The visit falls apart because of how little things actually have changed, Jinshi is set up and accosted by a women he didn't invite into his home after repeated attempts to drug him (he was glad to see Maomao, and excited by the prospect, but it doesn't change the fact it is very similar to experiences with assault) Maomao meanwhile regresses hard, she is right back to submissive and beheadable and treating the situation like she is a courtesan and Jinshi a client, and that this is a transaction even.
Nothing has actually changed and that is why it fell apart, and LN13 shows us nothing but changes, because everyone else gets to change and grow, but Jinmao are locked in half in the cage until they pick a side, and the only side they will pick is out of the cage, so nothing can change until he is free.
I would also say LN14 and 15 are also a lot about this, kind of a bridge gap between the WC2 and smallpox arcs
The pleasure district has changed. Most notably to Maomao, Meimei is gone, bought out. Pieces of her life that she knew would change suddenly are, she is happy for Meimei, but also saddened by the change. The apothecary doesn't need her, Sazen and Kokuyou were running the place just fine, and Chou-u doesn't even speak to her iirc. In 14 (which yes doesn't fix any issues of 13 feeling a certain way, but i think is important to mention in this arc of change) Maomao explicitly notes she doesn't even recognise that many courtesan's or customers anymore, the driving conflict that Zulin's sister is against is the lack of change, the Princesses have kept their positions too long and it is driving conflict.
court has changed. Lakan's faction has weakened to the point of someone hanging a body in his office, but he hasn't he is just as uncaring and lazily pointing out the culprits. Lakan's relationship with Maomao also has not changed from 6, where he will act psychotic and it is a problem, but one that is intrinsically tied to Maomao's refusal to claim her place as a member of the La clan imo. Again in the immediate next volume, Lakan does not act nearly as bad when Maomao is existing in her role as the La clan Princess, even in 16 he is more than happy to just have her in the estate and eating something on the other side of the room. Maomao's refusal to accept her place in the La clan stalls the development of Lakan, who refuses to let go of her.
the rear palace has changed and it also hasn't. Jinshi has not managed the place in a good few years now, at 13 the Emperor has had no more children, and promoted no new consorts to fill 3 high consort positions that have been empty for years. The lack of changes in the rear palace isn't knew, but it is preventing Jinshi freedom and change and growth, because his freedom is contingent on strong healthy son of the Emperor to secure the Ka line.
the medical office actually has changed. Doctors like Li and You have been promoted, and new court ladies have been hired, and ones we don't even know of fired. it is for that reason that Maomao is allowed growth in this area, she is being treated like a Junior doctor, the same rank as Tinayu. Tianyu who does not change with these changes is punished for it later in 15, growth and changed have to be forced upon him.
in a similar way Yao and Enen, are being punished by the narrative still for a lack of change, being yelled at by Changsha for refusing to grow and change as people have been trying to make/encourage them.
i think Ah-Duo and Maomao's conversation is also incredible relevant to this theming as well. Ah-Duo is trying to change the what one could argue she thinks of as the night that ruined her life for Maomao, and Maomao herself, queen of ignoring and running from her problems, refuses. The girl that avoided Jinshi's advances for years is gone, and in her place someone more than willing and ready to accept them even with all that it means. That is a massive change and a huge growth for her, even if she only halfway there.
Light Novel 13 is yes lighter and sillier than the previous novels with the exception of the ending, but it has to be as it transitions us into the next phase of the narrative. I personally think that LN14-16 are much more tonally in line with the 6-9 range more than the 10-12 WC2 arc which also makes a lot of sense as part of this reset like LN5. I think we are maybe getting 1 more novel before we take another hard dip into heavier and darker, i would not be surprised if Maomao is kidnapped late in 17 and we get a cliffhanger ending with the reveal of her captor to the audience, or early into 18 with a hopefully pacing more like 4 than 12 but likely somewhere in between.
anyways yeah, LN13 is great and sets up the arc about growth and stagnation and i love the ways it goes about it, because it is impossible to read LN13 and not feel how much has changed since we were last in the capital.

Comparing Anime and Manga Jinshi (The Literate Maid Scene)
Watching Apothecary diaries anime now, because at Manga 7, it was becoming obvious that the Manga wouldn't ever tell me how Jinshi figured it out. Gonna say, the Anime is a lot better at showing this deductions then its manga counterpart. In the manga you get a rough shape of the deduction, but a crucial step is left very unexplained. In the manga, we can understand the rough shape of Jinshi's deduction: It's a scrap from the Laundry Maid uniform. And it has writing on it. It is therefore most likely a Laundry Maid (access to the uniform), and they must be capable of reading and writing. Hence the second phase of putting them in a room with someone writing text. The difference, is that the manga never tells us how he concluded "The one with freckles knows how to write". Which is a pretty crucial part of the deductive process, and in fact framed as the smoking gun that puts the case together. But nonetheless the manga doesnt actually tell us how Jinshi concludes Maomao can read. (I assumed he'd seen her lean in to check the text as he was writing pages. While the other maids were fawning. And that those contents just werent shown to the audience for their non-import. Leading him to write and hold up the Freckle Note.) In the anime it becomes obvious that he overheard Maomao as she left the bitchslap, muttering about the need to write things down. And that he was able to recognise her out of the line-up from that incident. (In the process, rendering the need for him to write "The one with the freckles stays" entirely redundant there was no need to "prove" literacy if the process is recognition rather then deduction.) In the manga, there is no such smoking gun. And even her response to the contents of the note is kept much more internalised. Making her pretense at illiteracy a lot more credible and Jinshi calling her out on the lie feel a lot more like an ass-pull. This unfortunately means neither Jinshi feels all that clever? Manga Jinshi feels like he reduced the options to a manageable number through two genuinely good deductions, then got the right maid on a random guess. Anime Jinshi feels like he remembered "Maid with freckles acted suspicious on the day of the confrontation" and just remembered her face. Which isnt much of a deduction at all, so much as it feels like happenstance. I do however prefer the manga's "its a laundry maids uniform scrap" as evidence over "As a laundry maid you had access to all the fabric, including this random non-specific scrap" explanation. The former works way better at explaining why you called in the Laundry Crew for closer inspection, whereas if it isn't a part of the uniform but just a random scrap from somewhere else she had access too... that is no longer Laundry Specific. It opens the suspect list to whatever other group would've worn the garment scrapped. (I acknowledge that this can be handwaved away by "Jinshi saw Maomao at the bitchslap, wearing a uniform. And hence still narrowed things down. But this is less satisfying, and also unmentioned in the anime version.)
No but...
LN 5 epilogue Maomao in NK style.. and she
... Touches her lip.... After she's done benching him...
..
Just a panel Neko... pls
I love the little tidbit in LN10 where we find out that Jinshi does NOT like it when Maomao refers to him as “The Moon Prince” or with any other honorific. Someone please get this man out of that palace he hates it there!!!
