It is thought that the Clans came together during a time of turmoil; marsh was covering more and more of the cats’ island territory, making it extremely difficult to survive. Lone cats were struggling to find food and fighting for any scrap of dry land they could find. As the island grew smaller, fewer cats could survive - except for the cats who learned how to survive in the marsh.
A few cats developed skills that allowed them to thrive without relying on large areas of dry land, and the other cats turned to them as a final hope for survival. Some of the cats turned to those that lived in the glades, strong swimmers with great night vision and soft steps to walk on soggy, unsteady ground. Others turned instead to the cats that found their homes in the mangrove trees, skilled climbers with the agility required to weave in and out of the roots of the trees that shelter them.
Although the island’s dry land continued to disappear, the cats were now confident that they could survive. When the island had all but entirely given way to the swamp, the cats came together under the full moon. The ancestors of those that came before them appeared on the island, urging them to join together in two Clans, to follow a code of honor, and promised that if they did, their ancestors would watch over them from beyond. These two groups became known as GladeClan and GroveClan. Generations later, the Clans remain strong, but new challenges are always on the horizon…
