Yesterday I gave directions to a stranger on how to get to his destination. And when I continued walking, I went back to the stranger to correct my directions so he can get there easier. The person who was with me at the time commented that I should be more careful about giving directions if they were in the car. And instantly, I knew that I had confidence in speaking to this stranger because I had subconsciously checked my surroundings. In an alleyway, which I was familiar with and knew people walked by on their way to their cars, I had weighed my advantages and knew there were two of us against one of him. An elderly man dragging a suitcase in each hand, I knew I had an advantage. And that’s the kind of fear girls have. We don’t even realise that we are always constantly analysing our surroundings and weighing our advantages because the fear that we might get attacked is so deeply fixed inside us that we don’t even realise we are doing it.
