Iâve been thinking a lot about Dean and allieâs book in the off campus series and itâs genuinely the only time I pray and hope that the tv show is not a perfect adaptation. Because what do you mean you friend lost his best friend (His best friend DIED) andâŚ.you punched him in the face???
Thatâs such a macho, toxic depiction of how men show up for men and like âoh I needed a kick to the face to actually sober up.â ??? Like your buddy is clearly spiralling so maybe if you wanna be macho and all force him out of the environment thatâs causing this? Take him back to his family??? Idk man that entire plot line was just written so badly and one chapter heâs spiralling and the next heâs like âIâm reformed, I actually donât want to become a lawyer or a hockey playerâ SHOW US YOUR WORK MAAM
Yes he missed the play, thatâs awful, yes he got addicted to drinking and drugs thatâs terrible but itâs also human and I hope the show does a better job of depicting what showing up for your friends actually looks like. Because this was not it.
anyways Iâm very sensitive about how trauma is written in literature (using the term very very loosely here) ((donât come for me but I feel like the author just ran out of emotions by the time this book came around lol))
(Also a few chapters later we hear all about how deanâs fam is the best. Where the fuck were they when he lost his best friend? Shabby writing, too many loose ends)
