I forget if I showed the beautiful Tyrian purple that they made in the synthesis chemistry lab that I collaborated with at the art museum. They’ve been synthesizing mostly blue pigments and dyes from throughout history. This was my first time seeing Tyrian purple in person and I was so excited!
Historically it was made from murex snails and was hugely expensive and used by royalty, but chemically it’s similar to indigo so the class was able to create it in the lab without snails.
Happy birthday to Josephine Baker, born on 3 June in 1906. Josephine was bi, making this a perfect day to celebrate some her and some other Black queer figures from history during Pride month!
Check out podcasts on each of them here: Josephine Baker, Marsha P Johnson, Njinga of Ndongo, Simon Nkoli
pursuant to previous post, I'm putting together a larp character for an age-of-sail- era game set in a particular fantasy world, and I've made myself a setting appropriate watercolor set, including trying for something like an historically accurate color palette, mostly approximated with what's available in modern/synthetic versions because I'm crazy but only so much.
On the other hand, I've had some earth pigments and gum arabic for awhile, I've been wanting to try mixing my own paint and this finally gave me enough of a reason. I made up some burnt sienna today, and it was extremely satisfying.
Having a craving to watch a specific kind of television that probably doesn't exist ... has there ever been a show that's like Tudor Monastery Farm x Secrets of the Dead but where every episode focuses on an artist at some point in history and deep dives into the pigments in their palette? It would get repetitive real quick but still, I would watch the shit out of something like that.

My kind of hedonism is waking up hearing the heat kick on and knowing the windows are open and not caring.

Presenting The Little Golden Book of Basilisks, a top tier Dumb Larp Prop.
we needed to give the players at our cyberpunk larp some information on basilisks, and how to make them forget you; because in addition to the standard lore, I decided to add a roko's basilisk joke, because I am out here entertaining myself first. It's only a threat if it knows that you know about it, get it, it's funny because..
Anyway. When I started writing up the basilisk text, it came out kids-book style. I wasn't quite sure how I was going to present it, I just went looking for any old little golden book at savers, but I found this one, and the way forward was clear. Stupid, but clear.
I painted out all the original text, doing my best to color match the backgrounds (and doing a frankly excellent job of it for the most part, tbh, I didn't know I had that skill), painting in wings and other little details and replacing the text, which I could have been more careful about but perfectionism would have cost me too much for a larp prop nobody needed me to go this hard on in the first place.
Our players found it in a fae library, and our friend who is a dad irl read it out loud in his best Reading A Story voice. He said he'd read it to his actual kids so he gets to keep the original.
People told me afterwards that they couldn't easily parse how I'd made it, which is extremely gratifying.
The answer, by the way, was to buy a sword from a weasel from the fae internet, which was me with a finger puppet because I don't have coding skills but I can needle felt. Moderately risky, but larp players love a puppet, I stand by this, and they were all in on it.

I was going to write this up as a post and do an actual good job but actually I think this is about the best I can do with it.

I've been paralytically overwhelmed with tasks and projects for the last two weeks, so obviously I just spent two days hyperfixated on making a travel pouch for paintbrushes.
