Oliver had forgotten. Zero memory of the incident until it came crashing back to him at having Quentin Lance in front of him, seeing the bite—his bite—staring him in the face. He'd had Lance over the hood of his car, hoping if he gave the man enough information about Deadshot and the auction that he couldn't resist taking an interest in the event, even if it meant Oliver would put a target on himself, too.
He'd thought he had the wolf appeased. With the way it had swam to the surface outside of the full moon, blackening out Oliver's thoughts, clearly he had been wrong. He remembers the satisfaction more than the wreck he'd made of Quentin's shoulder.
This is nothing to be proud of. Anyone. Anyone else would have been better. This has stripped away Oliver's safety and any protection he had, giving the one man that wanted to know the vigilante's identity the ability to know the vigilante's identity.
You can't form a pack with a man that wants them dead!
Oliver takes another step back. It's showing weakness but he's gotta give himself space from the literal consequences of his actions.
Does he have to kill the detective?
The wolf rears at that and Oliver snarls back mentally as he visibly staggers. This isn't his fault! But ignoring the possessive, protective surge of the beast, Oliver can't possibly imagine what would happen to Laurel if her father turned up dead.
Lance said it himself: smell won't hold up in the courts. He wouldn't need it. Give himself long enough to sort through the changes and he could track Oliver down to the ends of the Earth.
The full moon was last night. Lance would've had his first transformation. That's why he looks Disaster Incarnate. His body's barely holding itself together.
“I don't know what you want me to say,” Oliver finally forces out. “I didn't—I didn't mean to. Believe me, I never would have given you that kind of power over—” Stop. Don't confess. It doesn't matter that he knows. Don't say it.
Lance laughs. “You're joking. This is—you're joking<. What am I supposed to do with this!”
“Adapt?”
“You son of a—”
“I'm sorry,” Oliver cuts in. “I can't undo it. As far as I know there's no cure.”
If it was the unnatural form based out of the mirakuru, then maybe.
“So you made me into a monster like you,” Lance spits.
Oliver looks away. “What are you going to do?” he whispers.
“Besides find a way that will hold up in court against you?”
Oliver sighs. “I already know your answer, but I can help you. The change isn't... easy. It's better with support.”
“Oh screw you,” Lance says. “I don't need your help. You messed up.” He holds up a hand, pointing. “I'm going to make sure you regret it.”
He leaves and Oliver sways, catching himself on old piping.
“I hope you're happy,” he says aloud, acknowledging the prowling beast in a way he rarely does. “You just ruined our lives. You remember what it's like to be in a cage?” Oliver thinks of Lian Yu, injured and delirious under Taiana's reluctant care. The wolf bristles. “Yeah. That's our future.”

The island had changed Oliver. Everyone knew that.
But no one could ever predict how deep that change went, warped through blood, past on naturally from Slade Wilson. After one of the many revenges served by the man, after they gave him the mirakuru to save his life and not only did it ruin him mentally it made him become something else.
He was handling it.
China was... a bad time. Amanda tried to use his “torture lessons” to help hone the beast inside of him, but that worked too< well. Her second attempt at “helping” by throwing him back onto the island did more for him, but not because of anything surrounding his mission. No, John Constantine slapped a magic tattoo on him and that made everything a whole lot clearer in his head.
He had lost control less.
He still wasn't a person that he thought could return home. He made his father a promise but like this he didn't know how to uphold it.
Anatoly only practiced enough caution out of the memory of Slade at his worst and Oliver trying to figure out his best, but he still accepted Oliver's presence in Russia with literal open arms and despite everything Oliver had been unable to hold on to, Oliver temporarily found a sense of peace.
Talia called it like it was. The wolf. He saw every aspect of himself a monster but she looked at his humanity as something to put under a hood and protect himself from that monster. Just the one. She said that the wolf was pure, nature clawing back a hold to an overpopulated world. Respect the beast, and Oliver Queen could be respected equally.
He didn't think he was ready to go home but she was right in that he needed to stop hiding away from his father's mission, and Anatoly assisted.
Returning to Starling had been harder than he was ready for. Five years and he hadn't had to live up to Oliver Queen, Son of Robert. If he wasn't himself, if he wasn't normal, no one could call him out on it, not even Sara. He could balance this other person that he didn't recognize in the mirror with the wolf roaming around his thoughts and it was fine.
He couldn't be who any of these people wanted him to be. He had goals. He had a path forward. And as much as it hurt him he did find a way to distance himself from his family and the people closest to him but it pulled one of his stability pillars out from under him. At least in Russia he had Anatoly and Talia. On Lian Yu, the second time, he had Constantine and Taiana. In China, he had the Yamishiros.
No matter how tragic most of those relations ended, he had support.
Distancing from his family put him more out of balance than he was prepared for and the wolf took it as an opportunity.

Writers have two modes and they are "i haven't written in three weeks and i am rotting from the inside and everything feels wrong and i don't know who i am anymore" and "i wrote for four hours straight and forgot to eat and it's dark outside and when did that happen and i feel like a god" and there is nothing in between. no chill. no medium setting. just famine or feast and a very confused nervous system.

A new option for anyone with a veeeeery long doc or complicated outline (and no desire to look at all of it at once) -
Collapsible headers!
Turn them on in your Editor settings (Toggle headings), then click / tap the arrow beside any H1–H4 header to tuck that section away, safe and sound.
When you create a new header, just hit Enter, and it’ll become collapsible too.
Collapsible headers work in both the editor and on Reader links, so you can use them while writing, outlining, and editing; or to help your readers stay focused on one section at a time. We particularly love them for temporarily pretending the previous 86,491 words in a doc don’t exist (at least, not until the editing phase). 🙂↔️
Free for all, woohoo!
And another smol but mighty update this week: You can now change the email address associated with your account directly from your Settings page.
Just enter the new address via Change email under Account details. Done n' done!
