Genre: slow burn / neighbors au / hurt / comfort
Summary: a quiet med student, a cigarette-stealing neighbor, and a very bad night in the hallway.
He stood there for a second.
The knocks didnât stop.
If anythingâthey got worse.
More aggressive.â¨More impatient.
Like they knew time was running out.
His grip on the gun tightened.
Every small movement.â¨Every shift in his posture.
You didnât realize you were holding your breath untilâ
The wood splintered near the lock.
You flinched, a gasp barely leaving your lipsâ
His arm came across youâfirm, solidâpushing you slightly behind him.
Like there was no other option.
The door gave in further.
A sliver of the hallway now visible through broken wood.
âDarwaza todne ki zarurat na padti agar khud khol deta, Humza.â
They said his name like they knew him.
But he didnât look back.
His entire focus was on the door now.
Wood snapping.â¨Lock giving out completely.
but before you could even processâ
âAkhir mil gya na tu Hamza ,â one of them smirked.
everything happened at once.
You flinched hard, hands flying up to your ears
Faster than you could follow.
One second he was in front of youâ
he had shifted sideways, grabbing your arm and pulling you with him just enough to get you out of direct line.
The man on the left dropped instantly.
The sound stuck in your throat.
The second man staggered back, shockedâ
The bullet hit the wall behind you.
Your fingers tightened around his arm instinctively.
You didnât even realize youâd done it.
Because for a split secondâ
Behind him.â¨Shielding you completely.
The second man collapsed.
Your chest rising too fast.
He was already looking at you.
There was something darker there now.
Something you hadnât seen before.
Your voice came out barely a whisper.
He didnât let you finish.
A flicker of somethingâregret? anger?âcrossed his face.
âHume yaha se Jana hoga.â
Your eyes flicked once more to the bodies on the floor.
And for the first timeâ
Something in his expression shifted again.
But he didnât say anything about it.
He just reached for your handâ
he didnât wait for you to take his.
The silence didnât last.
Somewhere down the hallwayâ
Your head snapped toward the door.
He swore under his breath.
Your eyes flicked back once moreâ
To the blood slowly spreading across your floor.
everything caught up to you at once.
âMainââ your voice shook, âmain nahiââ
He was in front of you again.
fingers brushing lightly against your wrist.
His thumb pressed slightly against your pulse.
âGood,â he murmured, softer now. âBas⌠mere saath raho.â
His hand tightened around yours.
You barely had time to register anything before he was pulling you alongâ
Down the narrow staircase.
Your steps stumbled trying to keep up.
âSlowââ you gasped.
Your hand was still in his.
His grip firm.â¨Unyielding.
Like letting go wasnât even an option.
The alley outside was dark.
Your heartbeat filled the silence.
Just tightened his hold on youâ
he pulled you hard enough that you had no choice.
Your shoulder brushed against him onceâ
and he instantly shiftedâ
placing himself slightly ahead.
A car waited at the end of the alley.
He opened the door, practically pushing you inside before rushing to the driverâs seat.
The car sped off before you could even close the door properly.
The drive was nothing but cold silence.
You pressed them into your lap.
the other moved slightly toward you.
Like he wasnât sure he was allowed anymore.
it hit you more than anything else.
You turned your face toward the window.
City lights blurred past.
Your voice came out small.
Just the sound of the engine.
The set of his jaw.â¨The tension in his shoulders.â¨The way his eyes kept flicking to the mirrors.
Like he was expecting something.
âTumne unheâŚâ your voice faltered, âbina socheâŚâ
âMain sochta nahi hoon.â
That wasnât the answer you wanted.
You shook your head slightly.
âNahi⌠tum sochte ho.â
Something unreadable passed through his eyes.
But he looked away just as quickly.
âTumhe abhi bs safe rakhna hai Mujhe .â
The word felt strange now.
When the car finally slowed.
It stopped outside an unfamiliar place.
Came around to your side.
You didnât move immediately.
Your fingers curled tighter in your lap.
he didnât reach for you.
He just stepped back slightly.
But the moment your feet hit the groundâ
You didnât even think about it.
And thatâs when it happened.
Like something inside him had quietly⌠dropped.
But he didnât say anything.
As you entered inside the haveli
The door shut behind you.
You wrapped your arms around yourself slightly.
Trying to steady your breathing again.
His phone started ringing again.
Your eyes flicked to him.
âUthao,â you said quietly.
More insistent this time.
Your voice came out firmer.
He closed his eyes for a brief second.
His expression hardened instantly.
His gaze flicked toward you.
âMain handle kar lunga.â
âYeh sab⌠kya hai?â
But you didnât stop this time.
âWoh log kaun the?ââ¨âTumhara naam kyun le rahe the?ââ¨âTumââ
He didnât answer immediately.
And for the first timeâ
he didnât try to hide anything.
âWohi jisse tumhe door rehna chahiye tha.â
But it hit harder than anything else.
Like he knewââ¨there was no point hiding anymore.
âHamza,â he said quietly.
Your brows knit slightly.
The name settled in the room.
But it carried something.
Your fingers curled slightly into your palms.
He let out a slow breath.
Like even saying it out loud cost him something.
âMain⌠Rehman Dakait ke liye kaam karta hoon.â
For a secondââ¨you thought you heard wrong.
Your lips parted slightly.
Youâd heard that name before.
In stories people didnât finish.
A cold wave settling deep in your chest.
Like saying it louder would make it more real.
Didnât try to explain it away.
âJo tum soch rahi ho⌠woh sab.â
Your eyes searched his face.
For something that would make this easier.
And that somehow hurt more.
A small shake of your head.
âTumââ your voice broke slightly, âtum un logon jaise ho?â
In the way his jaw tightened.
In the way his gaze dropped for a second.
âMain un jaisa nahi hoon.â
âLekinâŚâ a pause, heavier this time, âunke saath hoon.â
Because that differenceâ
didnât feel like enough.
âPhir⌠mere saath kyun?â you asked, voice trembling now. âMere paas kyun aaye?â
He almost let out a dry laugh.
But it didnât reach his eyes.
âMain nahi aaya tha.â
âMain door reh raha tha.â
The way heâd always stop himself.
He ran a hand through his hair again, frustration slipping through.
âPhir⌠tum aa gayi.â
A small, helpless exhale.
âBalcony pe woh cigaretteâŚâ
Your breath caught slightly.
âChoti choti baatein,â he continued, quieter now, like he was admitting something he shouldnât, âtumhara hasna⌠bina wajah baat kar lena⌠jaise sab normal ho.â
His gaze lifted to you again.
That vulnerability he hides from the world.
âMujhe yaad dila deta tha⌠ke main kya ho sakta tha.â
âIss liyeâŚâ his voice dropped even lower, âmain ruk gaya.â
âIss liye main tumhare paas aata raha.â
Your eyes stung slightly.
But confusionâfearâstill lingered stronger.
âTumhe pata tha na?â you whispered. âKe yeh sab⌠dangerous hai?â
A flicker of something crossed his face.
Something close to regret.
And that scared you more than anything else.
you werenât an accident.
You shook your head slightly, trying to process.
âTumne mujhe bataya kyun nahi?â
âMain taiyaar nahi thi iske liyeâmainââ
âIsliye nahi bataya.â
Your eyes snapped to his.
That didnât make sense.
âMain chahta thaâŚâ he struggled for the words for the first time, âke tumhare liye main bas⌠woh hi rahun.â
âWoh ladka jo tumhare saath balcony pe cigarette share karta hai.â
And now it felt like it had been taken away.
He didnât answer immediately.
Like he was memorizing something.
âAbâŚâ he said finally, voice quieter than before, âab tum sach jaanti ho.â
âAb tum decide karo.â
this wasnât just about him anymore.
walking away didnât feel as easy as it should have.
He didnât push further.
Didnât try to explain more.
Just let the silence sit between you.
Like heâd already said more than he should have.
âYeh jagahâŚâ he started, voice steadier now, slipping back into control, âek safe house hai.â
Your eyes lifted to him again.
He gestured faintly around.
âKisi ko nahi pata tum yahan ho. Subah tak⌠Donga aa jayega.â
âWoh tumhe aur safe jagah le jayega.â
Like heâd already thought ten steps ahead.
Your chest tightened slightly.
ââŚaur tum?â you asked before you could stop yourself.
Then a small, almost tired exhale left him.
âMujhe kuch kaam hai.â
âAaj raat lekin mei yahin hu.â
Because he stepped back again.
âMujheâŚâ he started, then stopped.
Like the words didnât come easily to him.
Your fingers curled slightly at your sides.
âMain nahi chahta tha ke humari kahaniâŚâ he paused, searching for the right words, ââŚaise shuru ho.â
Your throat felt tight again.
Not with blood and fear and truths that cut too deep.
He looked at you properly then.
And there it was againâ
that honesty he didnât hide anymore.
âAgarâŚâ he hesitated, just slightly, âagar ek mauka aur de doâŚâ
ââŚtoh main sab theek kar dunga.â
Just something he wanted to believe.
âHum phir se shuru kar sakte hain humari yeh khanni.â
it wouldnât really be simple.
A fresh start doesnât erase what youâve already seen.
Then added, quieter nowâ
âLekin agar tum nahi chahtiâŚâ
Like he was already preparing for it.
âItna keâŚâ a small, almost broken breath, âtumhe kabhi mere hone ka ehsaas bhi na ho .â
Silence filled the room again.
More to himself than to you.
âToh mei chala jaugaâ
He turned slightly toward the door.
Hand brushing against the handleâ
Without looking back, he said quietlyâ
âAaj raat⌠araam se so jao.â
The door closing softly behind him.
The room felt different now.
Because he was still there.
wouldnât stop replaying everything.
the way he said âmain ruk gaya.â
Your fingers lifted slowly.
Still remembering the warmth of his hand.
Because no matter how much you tried to make sense of itâ
one thing refused to go away.
You werenât just scared.
And that terrified you the most.
Sleep didnât come easy.
Lying there, staring at the ceiling, eyes burning but refusing to close for too long.
The way he stood in front of you.
The way he said his name.
The words sat heavy in your chest.
You turned slightly on the bed, pulling the thin blanket closer around yourself.
Your mind wouldnât stop.
Every small moment replayingâ
The way he always noticed.
Even when he shouldnât have.
Because somewhere between the fearâ
something else had settled too.
And that scared you more.
By the time sleep almost cameâ
Soft light filtering through the curtains.
You blinked slowly, sitting up.
Your heart picked up slightly.
Feet cold against the floor.
Leaning slightly against the wall near the window.
A cigarette between his fingers.
Smoke curling slowly into the morning light.
Like you were seeing him properly for the first time.
Not just the man next door.
Not just the stranger with a gun.
His gaze shifted toward you.
And the moment your eyes metâ
he straightened slightly.
Like he was giving you space to decide.
you didnât let that distance stay.
Like he didnât want to hope.
You stopped in front of him.
neither of you said anything.
your fingers found his hand.
The way his fingers stilled in yours.
The cigarette slowly slipping away from his hand.
Your grip tightened just a little.
Not letting him pull away.
Your voice came out soft.
âPata hai⌠yeh sab bohot pagalpan hai.â
Your thumb brushed lightly against his knuckles.
âJo kuch bhi hai⌠jo tum hoâŚâ
ââŚmujhe darr lagta hai.â
His breath hitched slightly.
âMujhe yeh manzoor haiâ
âtum chaiye ho Mujhe .â
The words settled between you.
But they didnât need to be loud.
the way something in his expression shifted.
Like he didnât expect to hear that.
Your other hand lifted slowlyâ
resting lightly against his cheek.
Warm skin beneath your fingers.
Like you were grounding him.
Your thumb brushed once more against his cheekâ
before you lowered your gaze slightly.
Pressing a soft kiss against it.
Lingering for just a second longer than necessary.
His fingers twitched slightly in yours.
you pulled his hand closer.
Resting it lightly against your chest.
Right where your heart was racing.
Your voice dropped to a whisper.
But it didnât shake this time.
âMain intezaar karungi.â
And for the first time he didnât step back.
For a moment he just looked at you.
Like he didnât expect that.
Not after everything youâd seen.
His hand was still in yours.
Resting against your chest.
Feeling your heartbeatâ
Something in his expression shifted.
His fingers tightened slightly around yours.
Resting gently against your cheek.
the space between you disappearing.
Your breath hitched slightlyâ
but you didnât move back.
His forehead came to rest against yours.
Like even this he wasnât taking for granted.
For a second neither of you spoke.
Right there, between you.
âIntezaar karogi⌠toh aana padega.â
Because it didnât sound like a question.
It sounded like a promise.
