The Peak District became the first national park in the United Kingdom in 1951, but its history goes back thousands of years. Archaeological evidence shows that people lived in the area during the Stone Age, leaving behind ancient tools and burial sites.

During the Bronze Age and Iron Age, communities settled there, building hill forts and farming the land. Later, the Romans passed through the region, constructing roads and settlements to connect important towns.

In the Medieval period, the Peak District was known for agriculture, especially sheep farming, which led to the development of its famous dry stone walls. The area also became important for mining, particularly for lead.

By the Industrial Revolution, nearby cities like Manchester and Sheffield grew rapidly, and the Peak District became a popular escape for workers seeking nature.
