“Yeah? How’d you mean? Dress in clown paint and start following them around?”

    “No! I mean, you gotta catch them when they’re      alone and freak them out. Tell them what they      don’t want to know.”

This was a lot more difficult explaining the process without including gifts of the graveyard.

“Uh… did I say they didn’t die peacefully? I mean, pretty sure heart problem’s one of those number one causes or whatever.

Oh wait, this about the haunting thing? Nah man, I wasn’t thinking ‘bout murder. Just jerks.”

“Sounds boring. If I were dead, I’d probably haunt people. Scare the crap outta those what done me wrong, et cetera. What’s the point of more existence? Existence is bad enough already!”

    “Newsflash, a lot of people die old and comfy      in hospitals, or their own beds.

“I bet they’re reeeaaaaal quiet, huh? Probably don’t do much. Lot of lazing about… You could even say they’re… deadbeats.”

    “...

“Huh. You saying you sleep through the day? That’s not a half-bad idea. So what, you party with the dead folks?”

“Ghost like the wind, Bullseye! Anyway, that’s cool, whether or not it’s real.

So what’s the graveyard like? Is it warm?”

“I don’t really believe either. Or if ghosts exist, I don’t think they can move things. That kind of misses the point about not having a body.”

    “They’re like the wind. It takes a lot      for them to move something a long      way, but they still have force.

“I knew that! An’ I didn’t make the word up, neither! It was in a book! They’re tiny little blue men who are really really strong and fight like a fucking shitstorm!”

“Dude, creepy. Or a telepath? Haha maybe it was a feegle!”

  “I dunno. They’re deep sea creatures.    Some scientists tried to bring one to    the surface, but it imploded into black    jelly.”

 “Hey, Bod! Did you know there’s a   thing called a vampire squid? It uses   bioluminescence to hypnotize it’s prey.”

    “No kidding! Wonder if Silas      knows anything about them.

In fear of a spanking and rather lost, Lucy had run away from the Sister that watched over the children of St. Mary’s. Whimsical dreams of joining a circus had fueled her flight, but now she was lost and cold and too scared to find her way back.

The voice behind her caused the little blonde to squeak and turn- mismatched eyes full of surprise as she looked up at the older boy.

   “If I’m not hurting anything, it’s fine if I’m     here. The signs are just t’ scare bad     people away. I’m not bad, I’m just hiding.”

The girl spoke as if she knew the whole world like the back of her hand, and he couldn’t help but stare at her strangely for a moment.

    “Oh, yeah? You think you know what the      signs are there for?”

His voice was a little more spiteful than he meant, but what else could be expected from children? Hands placed precariously on his hips, he frowned at the stranger.

Silas was always strict about closing time, ever since his own arrival to the grounds. It was unfortunate, though not Bod’s fault, that sometimes the more sinister beings in the world were attracted to this very graveyard.

Bod also knew he should have been off to bed soon, but he never found it fair to go to sleep when the most amazing things happened after the sun went down.

It was one particular week when Silas was off on one of his business trips and he was trying to hide from the residents so they wouldn’t nag him tonight.

But there was one being here that didn’t look very familiar. She didn’t look see-through, either. Which meant one of the living came in during closing hours. Instead of letting someone else shoo her out, curiosity got the best of him, as every child instinct urged, and he quietly approached her.
