summary: hi! It’s me gig, I’m here to yap about the fandoms I love and about my deep inner physiological thoughts. I’m just a girl dealing with life who thinks that everything bad that happens to her is either the ao3 author curse or for poetic timing. Sometimes I’m a poet, and other times im just a raging bitch. hey so I just had the most devastating thought and now everyone must share the devastation…

AU where regulus is the one sent to kill James and Lily…and it’s the plot of You Missed My Heart (Phoebe Bridgers).

Halloween had always been their favorite holiday back in school, James would always try and convince Regulus to do the most ridiculous couples costumes and he would always refuse and act like it annoyed him when really he found it the most endearing thing ever. They used to be happy, didn’t they?

but that was before. before war. before regulus couldn’t leave. before James had to leave him because he couldn’t fix regulus and he couldn’t bear to watch him “follow the black legacy”. It was before regulus went mad.

now James and Lily are having little Harry’s first proper Halloween, laughing as he races through the hall in his lion costume, always the Gryffindor. They were happy, with their little family, even if it wasn’t what either of them really wanted. They didn’t love each other like they did when they were eleven, not after regulus, not after Mary, but the arrangement worked. James and Lily loved each other, in a way deeper than platonic love, but not quite romantic. They were happy raising Harry as best friends after a night full of regrets went too far. But it worked. They loved having Sirius and Remus over and watch them laugh with Harry, even though James could see the longing in Sirius’s eyes for his brother, even though Lily could see the worry start to make Remus look much older then his age.

they were happy. They were happy on October 31st, 1981.

when regulus came into the kitchen that night, Lily was sitting at the kitchen counter in her bra and underwear, sipping red wine and thinking about Mary.

he asked her to leave.

she looked up at James as he walked in from where he had been sitting on the sofa, and said “I won’t leave you”.

regulus lost it, he asked one last time “please Lily, don’t make me, please leave”

“I can’t” she said, her voice breaking, and nodding in accept as regulus pulled out his wand.

the killing curse came quickly, and Lily didn’t feel pain, green had always been her favorite color after all.

James sobbed. Regulus couldn’t take it anymore.

he chased James up the stairs, past the nursery where Harry was sleeping peacefully, he tackled James to the floor and pinned him down.

“I miss you,” he told James desperately, “I miss talking to you, I miss knowing you, I miss laughing with you, I miss going to Hogsmede and showing you off,” he began to cry, “I miss the way you kissed me, I miss your skin.”

James began to laugh, “that’s quite a list, but you missed one thing, you missed my heart.”

James kissed him on the cheek, Regulus screamed as they dragged him off to Azkaban.

He tried a million ways to end his pain in his cell, but without his wand it was no use.

Years later Harry came to visit him in Azkaban. He said very little, but the one thing that mattered, he said, “I forgive you,” his dad had told him stories, he knew the man regulus used to be.

that night regulus ran. he ran through the halls. he made it all they way to the graveyard outside before a dementor managed to hit him in the back of the head. he fell and felt his skull crack against one of the graves.

regulus laughed as he slipped away, he told the dementor, “you got me good, but the one thing you missed is my heart. my heart is with James. my heart is with Harry. you missed my heart.” He died with a smile on his lips.

he died downriver from the Azkaban prison graveyard.
