Infinite Slaughter

“Oh, how I missed these little chats.  And how you think any amount of goons will slow me down.”

Merc shifted slightly.  A subtle thing, but a test.  Seeing if she would notice his changed stance and react appropriately.

He briefly entertained the notion of not fucking with the bird girl, but this was too good of an opportunity to pass up.

—♗— ”You’ve thought about this a lot, haven’t you?” She was honestly a little surprised. Given his penchant for genocide, she figured he’d be on board with them as long as it wasn’t him they were killing. Then again, she also knew him to have some form of a heart in there somewhere. “But the second Cinder finds us missing we’ll have every Grimm on Remnant after us. And I don’t know about you, but I can’t kill that many Grimm in one go.”

—♗— Did-… did he just? No, nevermind. She finally stilled her arms, allowing them to fold in front of her chest. “I’d still want to leave, except….” She glanced around, as if afraid of the very shadows in the room. “I don’t think we actually could.”

“If we wait until Hazel is gone, it’d be easy.  Watts would never take notice of us no matter what we’re doing and Tyrian is too obsessed with his goddess to look away for a moment.  The Grimm are dumb and we could easily hoof it to the coast and find a way back to civilization.”

—♗— “Yeah. They don’t care because we’re doing what they want. The second that stops being the case, all bets are  off.” Emerald really didn’t want to see what would happen to the two of them if that….thing decided that she and Mercury were fully expended resources. “You know,” she began after a moment of silence. “There was a time where I was debating on asking you to leave with me. Just-…go.”

Mercury thought for a long time before responding.  His posture was as non-committal as ever, belying no underlying emotion.  His face remained as placid as a pond on a calm winter day.

—♗— “Well when you’re dealing with walls that have more ears than you do, you tend to keep unpopular opinions to yourself as much as possible.” She did not want to be on the receiving end of a chat with Watts or Cinder.  And please keep Tyrian 56684189138742687.7 feet away from her at all times please and thank you. The gentle touch from her partner was appreciated, however little it did to ease her nerves. Hands came up to rub at her arms as her eyes closed in an attempt to stifle her growing worry. These were not emotions she needed to be having in this house of all places. And yet it seemed to ooze from the very building. Eugh.

“I don’t think most of the people here care about what we do.  It’s like we’re beneath them.”

Mercury spat the word beneath.

“I’m beginning to think they’re not that dissimilar from the common chaff they claim to be so superior to.  They disgust me for how little they can see it.”

—♗— That was putting it mildly. She leaned her head against his hand, looking for any modicum of comfort that she could find in his touch. “I’ve been doubting things since Vale. I knew I was in over my head but this-….” She gestured vaguely around the pair with a sigh. She could find the right words for just how wrong this all felt.

“Is a new low.  I know.  It’s just taken this long for you to admit it.”

—♗— “I dunno. This place…these people…” She shook her head. “I just feels like we shouldn’t be here.”

“Since when did we care what we should or shouldn’t do?  We shouldn’t have killed Tukson, something I pointed out when you suggested it, but we still did it; and I was right, Cinder was pissed.”

Mercury cupped Emerald’s face with one gloved hand.
