I’ve always wondered how people can stop loving another person. How it is so easy for them to just stop, to forget that they ever happened to forget that they shared memories and happiness and tears and spun their soul with the other. To forget the promises and secrets they told one another in confidence and in hope of fulfillment. To forget that they knew the person, every thought process, every movement, every nook and cranny. How easy it was to forget the way their eyes lit up at the mention of superheroes and TV shows and Harry Potter and the way he talked too fast on their first date and the way she was so nervous that she hit person after person. The way he made her quiet and void of words, the way she listened with a smile on her face as he talked. The way he scolded her with an amused tone and the way she was always so stubborn, even with him. Months worth of memories all gone because of four words. Months worth of memories forgotten. Is it really that easy? I’ve always wondered Because it was never easy for me. It was never easy forgetting you. Months later, when I see a jar of peanut butter I still remember that it’s your favorite. I would see a bottle of brandy and remember the way you took four consecutive shots, got drunk and ended up drunk calling me. I would see a frog, and remember all the secrets you told me the night you got drunk. Months later, your smell still clings to me, your laughter still familiar, your voice still in my head. Months later I still feel like I’m yours, even if it’s been so long since I wasn’t. Months later, I still don’t know how to forget you.
