What cultural anxieties lie beneath the outrage over a world that largely doesn’t exist?
Join me as I ask the questions: since completely child-free public spaces largely don't even exist, then what’s really the source of people’s outrage over the mere idea of them? Why do people have such inherent disdain for adults who admit they either want a temporarily break from kids for an evening, or don’t want kids in their lives in a meaningful way at all?
What deeper cultural anxieties are really at play here?
Even if you're a bit skeptical, I ask you to give this piece a chance, because I tried to flesh out my thoughts more than I ever could for a mere tumblr post, and think I made good points 🙂 And I tie this to the current panic over birth rates, so it's #relevant and, at heart, a feminist piece.
I was with my mom at the Philadelphia Zoo recently, and she said, “Remember that butthurt mother on the internet you told me about who acted like zoos serving beer meant child-friendly spaces are shrinking? Well we’re walking past a beer garden at a zoo right now and it looks like kids are still able to have fun here” lmao.
And then my sister was like, “Oh yeah, and she was mad about museums having adult-only after hours, right? I went to one of those with [friend] and it was great 🤷♀️”
So she reminded me of this piece. I like to periodically remind people that the vast majority of discourse around child-free spaces is angry at a world that doesn’t exist and is rooted in conservative, reactionary backlash at people women contentedly living an adult life that doesn’t revolve around children 😊

This is your semi frequent reminder that there is no official AO3 app
All those are unofficial and available on the Google play store as of August 13th 2025. They mirror AO3's content and insert ads, for which the developer gets paid by page impression (that's every time the ad appears in the fic you're reading) not just clicks.
No money goes to AO3, nor to the fic writer. It goes to the person who did the bare minimum.
Many of these apps have poorly worded or non existent privacy policies, so they may also be mining as much data as possible and selling that on to unknown third parties.
Please, just use the official AO3 site and the browser.
As a guy who does Cyber IT as a living PLEASE USE THE MAIN SITE ON THE BROWSER! Do not use unofficial apps. You are opening yourselves up to a multitude of cyber threats, especially when there is no privacy policy or agreements.
The site is mobile optimized, and you can download the fics as PDFs or epubs if you need to read offline like on a plane, there is no reason to use a third party app.
