Been thinking more about this scene because like..
It's clearly an "Oh" moment
But how tf am I supposed to believe that Crowley, who we all know has been feeling love for Aziraphale since the garden of Eden And has spent thousands of years living amongst humans, engaging in their customs, watching their movies, listening to their music never identified "oh! this feeling is kind of similar to human love"
But like... it would be so Crowley to just think it was a singular experience. To just be so swept up in the enormity of his emotions, and to believe he is the only being that's ever felt this way. Why would he ever think to link it to it to humanity? it probably feels much bigger than that, humans could never understand. and if this feeling truly started on the wall in Eden, he wouldn't have had the human context to frame it with yet anyway It's not until Nina reframes it for him that he's like "oh, shit"
"It was just love this whole time"
I canât stop thinking about the way we sit with these shots for an uncomfortably long time. And how in a way it kind of makes you feel helpless. Which is honestly perfect.
Aziraphale is desperately trying to convince himself he's made the right decision, that he can change Heaven, that he can do some good. Now he just has to prove it
But I want to focus more on Crowley. I don't believe this shot of Crowley is heartbroken. Maybe a little bit, but mostly he's angry.
It's the kind of anger you get when you love someone and you spend so much time with them, knowing the place they come from isn't good for them even if they themselves refuse to see it. It's the kind of anger you feel when you see them progress and stick up for themself instead of just following along, and then suddenly its just gone.
It's exactly the kind of anger you feel when you try so hard and you still can't save someone from going back to a place that just tears them down.
You know you can't stop them. You can't make their decisions for them. But it still fucking hurts.
Crowley's favorite thing is saving Aziraphale. And he couldn't do it this time.
Water is not sliding off his back.

Crowleys so cool crowleys so mysterious this and so hot that - Crowley is a hot fucking Mess.
He did not realize he felt romantic attraction towards Aziraphale for 6000 years âźď¸ Crowley thanks cars when he crosses the road, his favorite tv shows are Golden Girls and The Good Place, he makes silly faces at his Angel, he doesnât want to hurt people, he talks to his car and his plants, heâs down so bad for Aziraphale that he runs his their bookshop for a day, lets him drive his their car and follows Aziraphale around as he Does Shit and Crowley simply watches, smitten. Crowleys idea of evil is glueing coins to the ground and making a Big Road look like a sigil - how fun! He went to a Gas Station only once because he wanted James Bond Bullet Hole Stickers for the Bentley. His name and phone number are in a Call Center Database. He jumps at every opportunity to save Aziraphale. The Bastille in France? No problem let me just stop time for a few moments, Angel. A Church during WW2 because Angel wanted to do some Good but fell into the evil hands of Nazis? Sure yes let me just do a chicken dance down the the aisle because my feet burn because this is literally consecrated ground - what did you say? You donât like my new name, Angel?âšď¸
Crowley is so silly and goofy, heâs a mess and most of the time definitely not suave. That Kiss with Aziraphale was most probably his first kiss ever. Heâs not the sexyman seducing people throughout history you think he is

Good Omens 2 appreciation post for that moment after Nina has just rocked Crowley's world with the revelation that no, he isn't slick and yes, it is glaringly obvious to everyone just how head over heels in love with Aziraphale he is.
Crowley takes himself off to the french restaurant and is drowning his sorrows in a bottle of wine while having the realisation that he's been following the angel around like a lovesick puppy all day with no other possible agenda other than to be around him.
And then he sees Aziraphale and whistles him over but the angel is too busy to join him for a wine in the middle of the day and Crowley tries to divert questions by complaining that he's scared Gabriel/Jim is gonna smite him and he'll be well and truly smote, no, smoted? Smited? What's the word he's looking for?
And the angel gives him a knowing look and says:
"Smitten, I believe."
PERFECTION.
GRAMMATICAL CORRECTION AND DIAGNOSIS IN A SENTENCE.
AZIRAPHALE JUST READ HIM LIKE A HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE BOOK AND DOESN'T EVEN REALISE HE HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD.
This is my new favourite double entendre.
Smitten as the past tense of Smite. And the exact reason Crowley is drinking in the middle of the day.
He's realising he's smitten, your honour.
I hope Neil closed the laptop with a dramatic flourish after writing that line. Hell if I'd written a moment that perfect I'd take a victory lap of the kitchen and then call someone to tell them how clever I'd been before I pop.
So, I feel like Iâm losing my mind. I keep seeing metas about how Aziraphale wants Crowley to return to Heaven and be an angel again because he wants them to be on the same side/be good/change/etc., etc., etc. but I donât see that at all. I actually see it as the very opposite.
Aziraphale loves Crowley just as he is. But thereâs something more. Something huge.
crowley in this season...... CHEFS KISS. hes nonbinary, hes adhd as fuck, hes EMOTIONALLY VULNERABLE (!!!!!), hes a complete weirdo, hes a SIMP, hes been spending the last few years w/ aziraphale FULLY AWARE that theyre basically married already and should stop dancing around the topic and just admit it, hes a sad little puppy who keeps getting rejected by the love of his life at his most vulnerable moments. im not ok
I'm not a "coffee theory" enthusiast but does anyone else feel like Aziraphale like, literally didn't hear and/or understand a word of Crowley's love confession? And I do mean literally - it seems Aziraphale did not get it at all. He never responds directly to a word that Crowley says about them. I mean Crowley says they've spent their existence pretending not to be a couple and Aziraphale doesn't address that?? Crowley says they can be like Beelz & Gabe and Aziraphale just looks at him like ????? Then Azi just goes "come with me!" almost as if Crowley hasn't spoken. What is this fuckery.
nah for real Aziraphale is laser focused on the incredible opportunity heâs offering Crowley, and in response, Crowley:
a) does not directly address Aziraphaleâs offer beyond âwhat?? no!â
b) immediately switches topics to wanting to run away to the stars together
c) never ever directly says âI love you and I want to be a coupleâ
From Aziraphaleâs perspective, heâs giddy to give Crowley universe-shaking good news, and Crowley says, âFUCK NO!! btw I like spending time with you, what if we hnnngk RAN AWAY?â
Crowleyâs love confession is fairly roundabout and unclear, and Aziraphale would have had to unpack it to understand it even if he were focused on it, but heâs not thinking at all about what Crowleyâs saying, heâs only thinking about what heâs offering Crowley and that Crowley is very angrily saying no.
I donât think Aziraphale understands what Crowley was trying to communicate until the kiss.
To add, I think this is absolutely another instance of Crowley going way too fast for Aziraphale, especially after Crowley said no to his proposal of going to heaven together. You can see in Aziraphaleâs face during the whole confession that he shaving a hard time keeping up with Crowleyâs thought process, and keeps coming back to come with me instead. Thatâs the conversation he was prepared for, not whatever is coming out of Crowley. So he focuses his thoughts on what is most tangible to him.
I do think people are forgetting, sometimes willingly, that Aziraphale is JUST as heartbroken over the rejection as Crowley
They did not walk out of there with Crowley destroyed and Aziraphale bummed but getting over it once he was in the elevator. Aziraphale went to Crowley all giddy and excited because he really thought this was finally it, this was finally their chance to be happy, and he sees it as Crowley taking that chance and stomping on it. H wasnât lying when he said he needed Crowley, he DOES, and now he thinks Crowley chose his hate for heaven over his love for him just as Crowley thinks Aziraphale chose his devotion to god over his devotion to him
It wasnât as simple as âAziraphale rejected Crowleyâ they both think the other rejected them it was essentially the messiest mutual break up youâve ever seen
Theyâre both completely heartbroken and do not see the part they played in their own heartbreak. Both thinking THE OTHER caused it. Itâs such a mess. Itâs SUCH a mess I cannot STAND these two

I am simply not interested in taking sides when it comes to aziraphale and crowley's little cosmic divorce. this is a jane austen romance, which means that both of our romantic leads need to grow and change before they can have their happily ever after. the problem isn't that one of them is Right and the other is Wrong, the problem is that they're each prioritizing a different problem and then approaching the problem they've backburnered with a long-standing habit or belief that they need to grow out of before they can succeed.
aziraphale is correct that heaven needs fixing! we can quibble over whether accepting a job as the boss is the right way to do that, but ultimately leaving michael or whoever in charge is going to lead to armageddon 2 armageddon harder. it simply will not work. the problem is that he's fumbling the relationship with crowley because he still needs to get over the idea of there being an inherently good and bad side and he needs to stop thinking that it's crowley being a demon that's keeping them apart. it's his own black and white logic that's doing that.
meanwhile, crowley is correct that he and aziraphale need to Name The Relationship and stop fucking around, and also that heaven and hell are the same institution with different labels and it's insane to think either of them is Good. but his impulse to respond to everything by trying to grab aziraphale and run is not gonna cut it here. "you can't fix an institution from the inside" is a philosophy of dubious value if your alternative is not attempting to fix it at all. if aziraphale is being held back by his cops and robbers mentality, crowley is being held back by cynicism and fear. they both need to let go of their flawed moral philosophies and emotional bad habits if they want to keep the world safe and be together! that's the point of the story splitting them up in the first place!
endlessly delicious and also fucking devastating to me that aziraphale and crowley's insatiable all-consuming need to protect each other at all costs is the exact thing that is tearing them apart
like. they are both victims. we know this. THEY know this. but their inability to see each other as anything else is literally the exact reason they are never going to see eye to eye. even when they're fully aware of the fact the other reciprocates their feelings. crowley is protective, so protective, to the point it makes him incredibly small-minded and so quick to anger, literally a hairline trigger for blowing up at aziraphale when he senses he's put himself at any kind of risk, and it makes aziraphale feel small and stupid and only pushes him away further. his immediate response of closing ranks around them both the second he deems them being in danger only makes aziraphale feel suffocated, in the same way that heaven has been breathing down his neck for thousands of years, and it frustrates him to no end, and it's exactly how metatron managed to get his foot in the metaphorical door of aziraphale's desires at the end of this season. and aziraphale is so convinced of crowley's intrinsic goodness, so resentful of his fate on his behalf, that he literally cannot just take crowley for who he is. he's so certain that he can make things better for crowley that he's blind to the reality that all that would make crowley's circumstances better is being loved by aziraphale in the pure and simple way he's convinced is impossible. his saviour complex only makes crowley feel more broken, more undesirable, than he ever would have done had aziraphale just hated him like he was supposed to. the exact ways in which they love each other so desperately is precisely what's pulling them further apart. they just cannot stop trying to save each other. and in doing so they're ensuring that they never will. and ok, this is presumptuous as all hell, but maybe some time spent as enemies, true enemies, will be exactly what they need to finally see each other at face value. not a problem for them to solve, but a person with whom they can weather anything that may come their way, for better, or for worse. and they will face it together, instead of trying to just shoulder it all for the other out of some fucked up obligation born from guilt or pity.
Todayâs Good Omens posting is about *spins wheel*
how Crowleyâs self-loathing colors the way he sees Aziraphaleâs interactions with him and how we should take that negative bias into account
Iâm not even gonna talk about the whole final scene/misunderstanding because weâve all talked about that one by now. Instead I want to talk about Crowleyâs description of the 3 reasons Aziraphale calls him:
(Paraphrasing) âyouâre bored; you need to tell someone about something clever you did; somethingâs wrongâ
this is a succinct breakdown and it lowkey paints Aziraphale in a bad light; Aziraphale only calls Crowley when itâs beneficial to him; this is a transactional relationship
but like, I think, to some degree, those 3 reasons are simply the only reasons Crowley can actually imagine Aziraphale being interested in talking to him. The last one is a common song and dance between them, sure, but what about the first 2?
Aziraphale calling out of the blue, rambling about how things have been slow and quiet in the neighborhood of late and wanting to take that time to catch up - Crowley canât fathom âAziraphale missed my voice and wanted to make sure I was doing okayâ and turns it into âAziraphale is just bored obviouslyâ
Aziraphale calling, absolutely giddy, talking a mile a minute about something clever heâs done canât possibly be âIâm the first person he wants to share his victories with, the person whose opinion matters the most to him now and alwaysâ so instead itâs âAziraphale just needed someone to tell this to before he poppedâ
(Thereâs an interesting thing implied here as well, which is that itâs Aziraphale calling Crowley regularly and yet we talk about how Aziraphale isnât taking initiative in the relationship but I digress)
Point is, I think Crowley knows that Aziraphale likes him, itâs part of what makes everything so heartbreaking - the way he ends up being rejected in spite of that - but just like I think he misunderstands Aziraphaleâs heaven proposal because he canât see that Aziraphale thinks he is better than heaven already, he misunderstands any reason Aziraphale would possibly reach out to him as some level of wanting something rather than⌠just wanting to talk to him. He doesnât recognize that he is Enough for Aziraphale, no strings or acts of service attached.
We just need one amazing kiss conversation to set this straight
i have watched the kiss scene and the breakup as a whole more times than i can count and my brain is still trying to process all the things it picked up on.
my newest painful obsession: aziraphale thought crowley came back for him.
they kiss, aziraphale says i forgive you and instead condemns them both, crowley leaves. the lip touching itself is fucking essay worthy because holy SHIT the amount of micro expressions flickering across his face is endless, michael sheen acted his ass off.
i think it's a mixture of surprise, unspoken love, a HEAVY dose of fear, disbelief, and oh my god what did he just do what did i just do. he turns away from the door and we get a very very quick shot of how exactly he is angled.
standing up straight with faked spiteful anger, the same anger he spit at crowley out of fear and insecurity, chin up, clearly waiting for something - or rather someone. we gotta remember that every single time crowley has left aziraphale, he came back. every. single. time. he came back and apologized, that's what they do.
crowley comes back and aziraphale forgives him and they continue bearing their silence.
the bell rings when the door opens again, just like it did when crowley left, and just. look at his face. how quickly he swivels around. the blink and you will miss it spark of hope.
and then the pure devastation when he realizes it's not crowley.
aziraphale thought crowley was coming back for him. he was WAITING for him to come back. even after all that, he couldn't imagine crowley actually leaving him behind, especially not after that kiss and his entire indirect love confession.
just like crowley thought for a tiny heartbeat that aziraphale was kissing him back, aziraphale hoped, hell, he fucking thought he KNEW crowley would never abandon him. not after "i could always rely on you. you could always rely on me." aziraphale has taken him for granted, of course he thought it was him coming through the door.
but that spark of hope gets stomped out beneath the metatrash's feet and he fully turns around, unable to face him and the reality of it all.
this time, he went too far.
this time, crowley did not want forgiveness.
he was about to say i love you and turned it into i forgive you, still clinging to their old ways, their old rituals, just that they are no longer those beings, no longer in that specific relationship. everything has changed.
they both thought the other would never abandon them. turns out they were both wrong.
Then then then! The whole time heâs talking to metatron right after this heâs stalling and glancing out the window constantly as he does so. itâs hard to read his expression because heâs masking how he feels in front of the metatron, but when they leave the shop the camera focuses on Crowley standing next to the bentley watching the bookshop closely. Right outside the fucking window, which we know has the perfect view of Ninaâs shop. So then aziraphale has been looking out the window checking to see if Crowley is still there, is coming back.
And Crowleyâs just been standing next to the Bentley staring back, unmoving, not giving an inch. Aziraphale checks out the window maybe three times in hopes that Crowley will come back but heâs not, and only on seeing that Crowley is not coming back is when Aziraphale decides to just commit to the bit and go back to Heaven.
(Iâd add gifs but I donât know how)
yes! exactly!
here he is, looking directly at crowley, who probably stares back.
and again
still looking while the metatron leaves and expects him to follow
here he is, about to tell him to wait, that he wants to stay on earth. but then he looks out of the window again
hoping, against all odds, that crowley will move, do something, anything. that crowley will come back and give him a reason to stay.
but he doesn't. and this is when his heart just. breaks. and he takes all that anger and grief and sadness and turns it into spite and a mask of angelic happiness. they're done, he will leave. it's over.
just that once again, like crowley, he can't but still hope. so he stops and he looks for him one last time.
and, see, the irony is that they are both too stubborn for their own good sometimes.
aziraphale is waiting for crowley to move and crowley is waiting for aziraphale to move.
the tragedy of it all is that if they could simply meet in the middle, they could be an us. but crowley is done waiting for him to catch up and aziraphale is no longer willing to wait for him to slow down, so they drift further and further apart.
i have watched the kiss scene and the breakup as a whole more times than i can count and my brain is still trying to process all the things it picked up on.

A very David Tennant story.
Did you notice that Crowley said âlet there be light again as a demonâ as a joke to switch on the lamp.
Point is, he remembers, he clearly has memories of his angel life. But he keeps pretending he doesnât remember things.
Why?
Heâs a demon. He lies.
