For the fic ask game - Dungeon master!Verso and Player!Gustave who keeps messing with Verso? Or the other way around, if that fits the scenario better :3
Thank you so much for the prompt, Nyoom! And thank you for putting up with my own "Tales from The DM's Chair". This is for the writing game over here.
The table was set. The map was rolled out. The figurines for his monsters were fully painted and ready. The 3D-printed model of The Monolith was in its box, ready for its big reveal mid-session.
Verso was as prepped as he was going to get.
Nervously, he picked up another handful of chips and shoved them in his mouth.
"You'll be fine," Gustave promised him as he walked into the room with another handful of snack-supplies to place on the table.
'Fine' was very easy for Gustave to say - especially as Gustave was the exact player that had managed to derail every single other grand fight of their campaign.
Never DM for your boyfriend, Monoco had warned him right before their campaign had started. And never DM for Gustave. He'll break you.
After one whole year of this campaign, Verso would admit that he felt a little bit broken.
"Of course I'll be fine," he protested. "I'm ready for you this time."
There had been their big encounter with the BBEG on Stone Wave Cliffs. Verso's bad guy had cornered them, and closed in, and split the party ruthlessly - but then Gustave had pulled out a scroll of Dimension Door and whisked himself and Alicia's characters off to safety before they'd even rolled initiative.
"Trust me," Verso claimed as he stared at his session notes again. "I've got you."
And then there had been the encounter in Old Lumiere: Verso had planned on doing some mysterious lore drops, before having his NPCs teleport The Mystical Manor away into the abyss. He'd forgotten that Gustave's character had Hold Person at the ready, and by the time they'd combined that with Lune's Zone of Truth he'd had to come to terms with most of his big-reveals coming early.
But that was different. Now, as he checked the enormous figurine of The Paintress that he'd been hiding around the apartment from Gustave for weeks, he reassured himself that this was going to go flawlessly.
"I promise," Gustave said as he crossed the room, leaving Verso scrambling to hide his notes and models from view. He managed to slam his DM's screen down on top of his notebook just before Gustave reached him, and just in time for Gustave to lean over his chair from behind to wrap his arms around Verso, his chest pressed against Verso's back. Gustave smacked a kiss against the back of Verso's head for good measure. "I've got nothing up my sleeves this time. I'm looking forward to it. Just a good, clean battle, right?"
"… Hmmm," Verso agreed, while getting the strongest feeling that Gustave was up to something already.
But it was hard to worry about that when Gustave was pressing another kiss against him, this time to his neck - but, before he could respond, the buzzer for their apartment rang out through the room, and Gustave was already untangling himself from Verso.
"Oh," Gustave said as he sidled towards the door, "I meant to ask - you know that helmet I picked up in the gestral village?"
Gestral village? Verso thought, hastily scrambling for his notes. Out-of-game, that had been six months ago, maybe more. "The helmet?" he checked.
"Yeah. Y'know. The one that 'calms emotions'? We used it once on Sciel's barbarian to snap her out of rage when she was cursed?"
"Right?"
"The item notes said it worked on Humanoids, right?" Gustave asked, although from the way he phrased the question Verso had a feeling that Gustave might be able to quote every single word of that home-brewed item by heart.
"…Right?"
Gustave finished drifting towards the door as their impatient friends rang the bell again. "And there's no size limit on that?" he checked, with a grin on his face and a spark in his eyes - as Verso began to imagine what that helmet might look like on the head of his Paintress, and how completely that would derail his encounter.
That item has no saving throw, Verso remembered in a panic, Why didn't I give that item a saving throw???
With a cheerful nod, Gustave departed to answer the door and let the rest of the party into their shared apart - and, scrambling through his prep notes, Verso wondered if being given some hints and an extra five-minutes to prep for Gustave's version of a 'good, clean battle' actually counted as mercy.
A Gustave sandwich!! What a delightful sandwich indeed! Thank you so much for this request!! This is for the writing game over here. This is mostly OG!Verso/Gustave/P!Verso filth, so it's all going beneath the cut. :3
Gustave usually considered himself lucky to have two lovers.
There were, perhaps, some who would call him greedy for being in such a relationship, and maybe he was. Maybe some would think him insane for being happily married in the real world, only to demand that same attention in the painted one as well.
Well, double the attention.
It wasn't his fault that there was another Verso already in the canvas, just as it wasn't his fault that said Verso had the exact same taste in men as the Verso he was attached to in the real world. There was, apparently, a fair bit of family drama regarding the existence of another set of Dessendres in the canvas, but now that they existed, it seemed… wrong to erase any of them.
The two Alicias got along splendidly, while the two Cleas refused to be in the same room as each other. Renoir was civil with his counterpart, and while Verso was technically fine with the other Verso, they seemed physically incapable of not bickering constantly.
And that was the rub. That was what made Gustave sometimes wonder if his desire to call both Versos his lovers was worth it.
Case in point, Gustave was currently naked and caught between the two of them. The sheets beneath his knees were the finest that could be painted, and there were a ridiculous number of pillows against the headboard of the illogically large bed. Arms circled around the shoulders of the original Verso, he had his head buried against the crook of his lover's neck, and the painted Verso had two fingers shoved up his ass, working him open with… distracted strokes.
Yes. Distracted. The bickering, remember?
"I've told you a thousand times already: you're doing it wrong," Verso said, and if Gustave looked over his shoulder, he'd see the painted version glowering at his counterpart—just a little feral as he bared his teeth at him. "If you were preparing him correctly—"
"—he'd what?" He could practically hear the smug smile that pulled at the man's lips. "Make a pretty sound for you?" Gustave moaned when he felt a hand smack his backside before squeezing around the digits pressed inside of him. "Like that?"
The other Verso's arms curled a little tighter, possessive, around Gustave's body.
"If you're doing it right, you shouldn't need to do that—"
Again, the painted Verso's hand connected with his ass, forcing a whimper past his lips.
"—but he likes it."
Gustave squirmed, desperate for more of literally anything right now, and his Verso from outside the canvas pet his hair before dropping a kiss against his curls. "You've learned to fuck him, but you've yet to master the art of making love to Gustave," this Verso snarled. The air practically crackled with animosity, and Gustave just wished that they would stop and pay attention to him instead. "Quite frankly, I don't think you can."
"Leave, and I'll show Gustave just how well I can take care of him."
"No, I think you should leave. You can't even prep him properly."
"Says the guy who actually exists outside the canvas."
That seemed to have struck a bit of a nerve with outside-the-canvas Verso, as he stiffened beneath Gustave. Lifting his head, he was about to say something—ask them to stop fighting for a moment—when the inside-the-canvas Verso took that moment to rub his prostate with a purpose. Gustave keened, toes curling and unable to lift his head; his fingers grasped at the pillows behind the Verso he was braced against.
"V-Verso—" he gasped the words against warm skin and whimpered when he felt a hand run soothingly down his spine. "Verso, please." The fingers inside his ass finally eased off and then slipped out and away.
"Mon amour." A whisper in his ear—soft and cautious: the Verso he was married to. "Did you want to stay?"
They were clearly words meant just for his ears, but from the snort that Gustave heard from behind him, the other Verso had very obviously heard.
Three fingers were being pressed into his ass now, and then Gustave felt a warm body settle against his back "Or do you want to stay, mon coeur?" asked his painted Verso. "I can make you feel so good—"
"Oh, fuck off—" The Verso behind him grasped Gustave's chin and tugged him over for a hungry kiss, while the one in front of him growled—a low, rumbling thing that Gustave almost felt more than he heard. "He's mine."
"If he's yours, why do you keep coming back, huh?"
Because Gustave asked. Because Gustave wanted. Because Gustave was a greedy, greedy man.
The silence from the Verso he was married to was… perhaps telling, and when the other Verso removed his fingers, Gustave took that opportunity to pull away from one kiss to seek out the other's mouth—hot and messy, filled with hunger and desperation.
This Verso melted into it, and Gustave relished the groan he drew out of his partner; he felt his fingers dig into his back, felt him relax slightly against the pillows. Behind him, Gustave could feel the other Verso sliding his cock against his cleft, and when Gustave opened his mouth to tell the original Verso that he wanted him, too, the painted Verso pressed in with one smooth thrust.
Gustave shouted, but the Verso in front of him kissed him through it. Gentle hands sorted through his hair and told him how good he was, how much he loved him, while another pair of hands grasped Gustave's hips with bruising force. Brutal thrusts from one partner pushed him forward against the other; Gustave had to break the kiss to gasp for breath, head bowed.
When he opened his eyes again, this Verso's erection was right there—hard and heavy, pressing flat against his belly. Gustave glanced upwards at the man with glassy eyes and then shifted just enough so that he could take that gorgeous cock in his mouth.
Twin moans—the same and yet different—filled the air as his lovers took their fill of Gustave's body.
Caught between them and with the bickering finally—finally—paused for the time being, Gustave remembered why he couldn't get enough of this, remembered why he asked for this in the first place: he was loved by both of these men so very much, and there was nowhere else he'd rather be.
Hello there! For the writing game, how about some fluffy domestic verstave. Maybe it’s only recently after the events of the game and all ended in a as-happily-ever-after-as-possible 3rd ending. Verso is unused to the comforts of a proper home after so long out on the Continent and Gustave surprises him with breakfast in bed.
what a fun and cute prompt
please enjoy this little bit of slow and soft Verstave
Verso could never have guessed his life would be like this.
The world had gone dark for a moment, for his body was finally at peace. Then a light opened up in front of him. The smell of paint took over his nose with a hint of turpentine that seemed to lessen the weight on him, keeping him down.
There was something strange, for it was calling to him… on voices he recognised in an instant - line and Sciel calling to him, Monoco's staff coming through the light with the bell ringing to guide him, and finally, a hand - a mechanical reached out. He had seen it only once or twice before this.
He gripped with all his might and allowed himself to be pulled out. His friends had come to get him a new canvas, one without the need for a paintress to be inside.
He came out of the light pretty fast and with such force that he couldn't control the way his body landed on something, or rather someone. As Verso first met those deep pools of brown, wide eyes filled with life and content and the way the man's hair, those curls that framed his face with ease.
This is how he, Verso Dessendre, literally fell in love with Gustave.
Verso was known for his ability to flirt but not for his ability to court something into a long-term relationship, after weeks of visits to Gustave Workshop and finally asking the girls for help.
He was able to get Gustave out of the workshop and into a nearby restaurant. The invite he had sent was specifically for fancy attire. Verso stopped working the moment Gustave walked in with that white suit with the red flower tucked into his hair. The same one Sciel said to put in his own. The girls had clearly schemed behind his back, but he was… thankful. It was a nice talking point for them, and now they could enjoy their time. the food, the wine and each other's company, followed by a walk along the harbour. where they walked side by side, hands brushing gently next to each other.
It wasn't long before the next date, then their first kiss and eventually, after months of discussing, their first night tonight. No one knows what happened behind closed doors, but it solidified them.
Verso awoke, he woke up feeling rested, his hand moved across the bed to where his partner should be… but when his hand only felt the soft fabric of the mattress, he rubbed the sleep from his eyes and noticed he woke up alone in his apartment. part of him thought it was all a dream, their dates and more, but then, looking across the room to the desk that housed Verso's sheet music and some of Gustave's blueprints, he, sneakily, brought home with him from work. He saw Gustave's clothes on the chair and finally their photographs that hung on the wall.
The man lay back down on the pillow, turning more to Gustave's side of the bed; he could still smell him. The scent of his lover, his partner, made him relax instantly.
He started his daydream, his hands taking a grab of the duvet and taking it in his arms as if Gustave was there.
He was pulled out when he heard the bedroom door being knocked. It was light but against the wood, slightly echoed.
Verso sat back. He quickly ran his hand through his hair, trying to neaten it up, as if Gustave had never seen him in his sleep with no care in the world.
The smile that appeared on his face as his fresh-faced boyfriend walked in with a tray of food. Verso adjusted himself by placing a few of the pillows he had just behind his back for a better position.
Gustave waltzed into the room. He danced slightly as he carefully carried the tray over to the bed and gently placed it on the bed sheets, on top of Verso's legs.
Verso's eyes widened at the variety of food he was presented with, the large glass of orange juice, and, finally, he felt the soft warmth of lips kissing his forehead. "Bonjour, Mon ange, did you sleep well?"
"Gustave, what's… what the occasion?… oh, oh god… I missed something important… I…" Verso just spiralled, for the fear started to well in his eyes. His first actual relationship, and he truly messed it up.
"Shhhh, Mon Ange, you've not messed up nor have you missed anything." Gustave smiled, placing a finger under Verso's chin and kissing him, knowing that the only way to shut him up was by kissing him. It was slow, sweet and soft as Verso melted to the touch.
They gently released, and Gustave took a soft breath in relief. "I wanted to do something nice for you, and I think you would like being treated like royalty for the morning… however…" Gustave looked to the side, looking away with guilt across his face.
"What did you do, Mon tresor?… don't tell me… oh no." Verso knew it instantly. "… my poor kitchen."
"Well, I've given you something to do after a hearty breakfast and some time in bed." Gustave leaned forward and stole a strawberry from atop the crepe. biting into the fruit and letting the juice drip down.
"Oh, you minx, teasing me that so that afterwards I'm not going to be so angry about how messy my lovely kitchen is…
Gustave laughed and ate the strawberry, licking his fingers seductively, "Well, it works… doesn't it…."

After a few months on board the Verstave ship, I think it’s time that I share a handful of my favourite fics (to be further expanded in the future, of course):
Painted Heart by Diari
Rating: Mature
Words: 88,708 [Chapter 11/13]
Summary: "A boy from the Writers’ Guild? Really, son?"
Their mother's voice almost cracked at the final word. My, this must be bad. She couldn't hear Renoir, but her soft-spoken father was most likely beside Aline and holding her by the side right now. He would not intervene until Aline would relent, or explode.
"He is not a writer, Maman. How many times do I have to tell you? He's an engineer—"
Or: I can't help but wonder... what if there was a real Gustave outside the canvas?
Notes: My first Verstave fic and therefore one that is very dear to my heart. It is masterfully written and beautifully heart-crushing. Don’t let the delightfully romantic atmosphere fool you, you’ll cry real tears by the end.
Baiser Volé by Diari
Rating: Explicit
Words: 102,688[Chapter 9/11]
Summary: Verso's smile widened, and Gustave knew with crystal clarity that the universe had a sick sense of humor. His Friday night blues had just become his Monday morning colleague.
"We've met," Verso said easily, still watching Gustave with those piercing eyes. "Haven't we, Gustave?"
The use of his full name was deliberate. Not a question, not a tease. A claim. It landed in Gustave’s gut like a stone, heavy and cold, followed by the slow bloom of heat at his throat where the bruises still ached.
He was so, so fucked.
Notes: A fic by Diari, again. Yet, the mood here is very different from Painted Heart. It’s one of the filthiest (affectionate) Verstave fic I’ve read so far. Verso here is a kinky fucked-up train wreck of a man and Gustave the sweetest dude in all of Paris. There’s also some very intense drama that will keep you on your toes… Beware though, the fic does not hold anything back. It's not for the faint of heart.
Pentimento by reina_randwulf
Rating: Mature
Words: 95,674 [Chapter 14/?]
Summary: Life is slow in Lumiere, a small coastal city not far from the Continent. Gustave is content with his life here, working as a power plant lead technician despite his disability. He has his sister, who is making her career on the Continent. He has his foster sister Maelle, whom he dotes on. Life is good until someone moves into the empty room below his. Verso might be the answer to all his problems or the one that will destroy his life.
Notes: This is a very sweet and wholesome Verstave fic. Like the Lumière from this world, it’s cozy and fluffy like a nice pastry. Still, there’s no Vestave without some angst and you also get your fair share here: Verso has a tragic past, Gustave some traumas and Maelle’s origins are shrouded in mystery.
Âme-sœurs by Irisen
Rating: Mature
Words: 191,270 [Chapter 30/35]
Summary: Verso didn't expect to meet his soulmate in a bakery. He also didn't expect said soulmate to be the only man in the capital unable to recognize the crown prince by name.
He isn't complaining, this is the first time in years he's been able to exist as himself and not as an extension of his family.
Surely, it won't hurt to keep up the pretense for a little while?
Notes: This fic is what happens when you mix all my favourite tropes (soul mates, royalty) in a blender and spice things up with Verstave drama. This is a fucked up as Verso can get, and still Gustave finds in himself the will and the patience to love that wreck of a man.
The Long Track Home by Renlukun
Rating: Explicit
Words: 58,602 [Chapter 8/ ?]
Summary: After Maelle takes over the canvas, Verso struggles to find meaning in the new Lumière. At least, until Gustave offers him to participate in a project together. Slowly, Verso starts to see the man he left to die in a different light, as he also struggles with the guilt of knowing that he's slowly falling in love with him.
Notes: Guilty Verso at his best, though for once Gustave bears some of the blame. If only these two idiots could communicate a bit instead of pine and make dumb assumptions. At least this makes for a lovely fic with nice chunks of steamy smut inside. And feels, a lot of feels.
Run with Me by porgthespacepenguin
Rating: Explicit
Words: 5,843 [Chapter 1/9]
Summary: "I'm leaving Paris," Verso says brusquely, by way of a greeting. He's never been very good with words; that has always been Papa's strength, not his.
Gustave inhales sharply, watching him in silence, his hands clutching his notebook so hard the spine begins to twist.
"You want me to come with you," he says finally, looking at Verso as though he's entirely lost his mind.
Or:
Time is running out. With war looming over Belle Epoque Paris, Verso must make a choice between his duty to his family and the young Writer who has unknowingly stolen his heart.
He chooses Gustave.
Notes: This one is fresh out of the oven, but I have had the privilege of having a peek at the baking process, and the first chapter is so delightfully well-written that the rest can hardly be disappointing.
If you are in the mood for one-shots, I can recommend you:
Chaud lapin (Horny Bunny) by ThatPersonWhoLikes
Rating: Explicit
Words: 7,471
Summary: "Hello?" A deep voice said as a man opened the door.
Gustave stood frozen like a deer in headlights. At this moment several thoughts crossed his mind at the same time.
One, that had to be the hottest guy he had ever seen in his life.
Two, this was decidedly not Alicia's apartment.
And three... Gustave was still wearing a baby pink bunny suit, with fishnets and a too-deep neckline.
Fuck his life.
Notes: One of my favourite one-shots. Do you like it sexy, funny and a comically absurd? This one is for you.
comfort me in my time of need by erenjoson5
Rating: Not Rated
Words: 4,959
Summary:
Gustave gets injured after protecting Verso from a Nevron attack and Verso has to make sure Gustave doesn't die before he gets them back to camp.
Notes: A short one-shot but a delightful one. It’s fluffy, a bit angsty and very well written. Sit down and enjoy the ride.
"I'm leaving Paris," Verso says brusquely, by way of a greeting.
"You want me to come with you," Gustave says finally, looking at Verso as though he's entirely lost his mind.
Butterfly Effect (104k words)
"In hindsight, Gustave probably should have seen it coming.
It all starts on a cold February morning.
A cold, foggy, horribly dreary February morning, to be precise; the sort of morning best spent hiding under a thick duvet, book in hand and a steaming cup of freshly-brewed coffee within easy reach.
His morning, in rather stark contrast, is an unmitigated disaster."
protect me (from what I want) (6k words)
"He wants, and yet he doesn't know quite what he wants, not anymore. Only that whatever it is, he can never have it."
Safe in My Hands (36k words)
"The first time it happens, it's a complete accident."
Alone With You (3.6k words)
"Verso doesn't mind being alone. Even with two sisters, he'd grown up an only child. Boys don't play with girls, after all, and the Dessendre heir doesn't play at all."

So You Want to Name a Sino: A Guide to Not Making a Fucking Fool of Yourself
Note: this will be long and very, very extensive because god I am so sick of this shit 2k16 I just want absolution and I don’t think that’s too much to ask, and even if it is I’m asking it, I’m not asking it emptyhanded I’m asking it with a WHOLE GUIDE FOR YOUR PERUSAL, because I’ve found that Wiki’s great if you want to know why and how we use names and not really great for when you actually want a name.
A theme of this blog seems to be my long suffering, and I want it known, recorded, carved in stone that as of almost 1:00AM on Thursday, December 22nd, 2016, I am officially Fed Up with the way Sino characters are named in fiction.
Let us be clear: this is first and foremost An Attack™* on all the white authors whose imaginations can only extend so far to provide us with a glut of Lings and Linglings and Ailings (not that those aren’t beautiful names) and Peonies and Pearls and, god forbid they start getting creative with their Sachas and their Wai-maes, but this is also for the Sino authors who can’t seem to do it either. And like, I get it. It’s not easy. Sinos are a disparate bunch with varying degrees of fluency in varying dialects of Chinese. Romanisation and naming customs are weird.
But also can we leave the idea of the inscrutable mysterious unknowable East in the 20th century please? There are resources. This is one of them. Let’s start before I steep for too long in my own bitterness and annoyance.
