Strong words to use on a Resume
If you have ever had to write a resume for work or for an application, then you know the hardest part is figuring out what type of words to use that sound professional and and intelligent.
Example: If an application asks you if you have any relevant experience for a job at a day care center and you have experience, like you have babysat children. You would look at the words in the columns to see what words you should use that will help your resume stand out. You might put down âHave supervised and attended to children on a regular basis.â
I hope this is helpful to you.
Now this is a great resume list of action words. Â I love that itâs broken down by types of jobs. Â Saving for future use.
Legit Tip #192
or -Â âDeveloping Friendships in Fictionâ
Regardless of the genre that you write in, and the type of main character that you have, itâs likely that your main character is going to have friends. Or allies of some kind, even if theyâre not the type of have âfriends.âÂ
Writing realistic friendships can be surprisingly tough, though. Thatâs especially true if youâre writing about a character whoâs quite different from yourself. Not everybody has the same needs when it comes to friendships, so the type of friends and friendships your character has may be very different than the type you have in your life.Â
Your character may be a social butterfly with a wide network of friends. They may be a political figure whose friends are also the people they work with and network with on a regular basis. They may be a loner who only has one or two close friends. You may be writing a cyberpunk story with a character whose only friend is their robot companion.Â
Whatâs the First Thing to Think About?
First - what is available to that when it comes to friendships? Not every character is capable of easily making friends - perhaps due to mental illness, or isolation, or other circumstances.Â
Or, if they can easily make friends or socialize with a lot of people, are they the type to forge deep friendships with these people? Or do they keep people at a distance? Do they âput on a maskâ and not show their âtrue selfâ to the people they come in contact with? If so, they may know a lot of people but not feel that they have any true or close friends at all.Â
What is their situation regarding friendships as your story begins?
As your story starts out, think about the people around your character and their social circle. If you are starting them out with a social circle and friends, then youâre going to have to establish their relationship with these friends right out of the gate - which can be a difficult task.
Itâs really not enough to just say Character A and Character B are friends and to leave it at that, especially if the friend character is going to play a significant role in the story. This is where a lot of novels in the romance genres and chick lit genres fail. (This isnât to say I dislike those genres at all. Just that Iâve read a fair few and found this to be an issue.)
We need to see how these characters became friends. More importantly, we need to see why these characters are friends. All too often, friendships come across as fairly unbelievable, especially when characters have conflicting personalities, which leads me to my next point -Â
Friends Need to Have Reasons to Be Friends
Just as in romantic relationships, friends fulfill needs in each others lives. Itâs all well and good to create a character thatâs interesting and dynamic, but if that character doesnât fulfill some role for the main character - provide something for them beyond simply being comic relief, or someone for them to talk to like a brick wall for dialogue, then that character can feel very flat for readers.Â
Imagine if you will two characters as friends for Character A. Character A is going on a quest to save the kingdom from an evil wizard. She has two companions.Â
Her first companion is a drunken dwarf. Her second companion is a beautiful elf. The drunken dwarf is revealed over time to have lost his wife to the evil wizard during a raid on his tribe, something which he reveals to her over several conversations with Character A. This helps her to realize the full extent of the evil wizardâs power and motivates her to continue on with her task. Their friendship is also cemented by the fact that she lost her parents to the evil wizard.Â
The beautiful elf has several conversations with her about good and evil. We learn a lot about his life with his clan, and heâs a well developed character by all accounts. And yet, even though he travels with her through the entire story and they have several conversations, they never really âfeelâ like friends or companions. He doesnât fulfill any role for Character A as he doesnât tell her anything she wouldnât already know.
Remember - Friends Fight Sometimes
One of the great things about Harry Potter is that J. K. Rowling remembered that friends fight sometimes. It may be a little annoying to read about, but thatâs only because itâs a little too real for people whoâve been there. Letting your characters disagree, fight, and get pissed off at each other adds to the realism of their friendship (and also helps them become stronger friends in the long run).Â
Donât Be Afraid to End Friendships
I rarely see it happen in fiction, which is surprising. But in real life, sometimes friendships end and people realize they have to part ways. Maybe thatâs because you suddenly figure out that being together has become unhealthy or toxic for the two of you, or because other things get in the way and you reach a point where you know you just canât continue on the way things were.
But it happens. And it could make for some interesting, poignant moments for your characters to deal with, especially if those friendships have made a big impact on their lives up to this point. Just a little something to think about.Â

making HONEST ANTAGONISTS who believe theyâre in the right and firmly believe in what theyâre doing is SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING than making them âcrazyâ because of some outside influence. make villains who believe they are the protagonists
THIS. THIS FOREVER.
1.Of the
âOf theâ is almost always unnecessary and can be simplified.
Examples:
The owner of the restaurant.
The restaurant owner.
The wheels of the skateboard.
The skateboardâs wheels.
One of the nails came loose.
A nail came loose.
2. That
This one seems innocent enough, but again it can almost always be cut without any damage. If you have âthatâ in a sentence remove it, and if whatâs left still makes sense then itâs unnecessary.
He said that he was coming.
He said he was coming.
Our teacher promised that there wouldnât be any homework.
Our teacher promised there wouldnât be any homework.
3. Adverbs
Most adverbs are either redundant or superfluous. For example:
âI have to go,â she whispered quietly.
Whispering implies being quiet, so âquietlyâ is redundant and can be cut.
He moved quickly across the lawn.
If we choose a strong verb the adverb becomes unnecessary and the writing becomes tighter and punchier:
He dashed across the lawn.

Romance: Avoiding the Cheesy Stuff
Anonymous asked:
Iâm questioning if some scenes in my novel are too cheesy, especially a proposal scene. Do you have any tips about how to write love scenes without coming off overly sentimental?
The key to eliminating the cheesy stuff is to figure out qualifies as cheesy and why. Unfortunately, that can very from person to person, so really you need to identify what strikes you as cheesy and avoid that. One thing that almost all cheesy stuff has in common is that itâs unrealistic. Keeping things realistic is how you keep the âoverlyâ out of âoverly sentimental,â too. How do you keep things realistic? Here are some things to avoidâŚ
1) Purple Prose
We all know to avoid absurdly flowery language, but weâre more inclined to do it when weâre writing something romantic. Love is magical, and we want to get that across in our writing, you just have to be careful not to go overboard. Itâs one thing to say something like, âWhen we kissed, I felt stars colliding overhead,â but if you go on to describe ripples of gooseflesh-raising electricity, and scores of fluttering butterflies ascending into the glittering heavens, youâve gone too far. Keep it simple. Limit your metaphors, similes, and adjectives.
2) Unrealistic Actions
Television and movies does us a bit of a disservice when it comes to the way people move around in romantic scenes. Scooping someone up in a moment of passion and carrying them to the nearest bedâthatâs not only cliche, it just doesnât really happen that much. More than that, though, itâs easy to get caught up in the tension of a romantic scene, and tension makes time stand still. So, we end up getting things like, âWe stared into each otherâs eyes for several minutes,â or, âI clawed and scrabbled my way across the grass to get to where he was sitting,â and thatâs just overkill. For one thing, grab a partner, set a timer, and try staring into their eyes for âseveral minutes.â Youâll find things get awkward after a few seconds, so those marathon staring sessions are unrealistic and therefore cheesy. Also, âclawingâ and âscrabblingâ your way toward someone youâre in love with may sound romantic in your head, but neither action sounds particularly graceful or romantic. So, think about the way your characters move around during romantic scenes. If you canât picture yourself or someone else doing it in real life, ditch it.
3) Overly Desperate Tension
Sometimes there are moments of desperate tension in romantic scenes, such as a heartbreaking goodbye or an unexpected reunion. However, desperate tension can go overboard really easily. Whatever youâre imagining, dial it back a notch or two. Try to think about how people really behave in a moment like the one youâre writing.
4) Emotional Overkill
People are all different, and some of us are way more emotional than others. But sometimes when weâre writing romantic scenes, we give our characters emotional reactions that donât really jive with their personalities. Thatâs fine if itâs a moment of built up tension being released (think of the sensible and stoic Elinor in Jane Austenâs Sense and Sensibility, who kind of falls apart when she finally gets her guy), but it shouldnât be happening all the time. If your character is normally sensitive, emotional, and affectionate, they shouldnât turn into an emotionless zombie during every romantic scene.Â
5) Corny Dialogue
In real life, poetic promises or admissions of love tend to be much more toned down than they are in fiction. When you write your dialogue, try saying it out loud in your characterâs voices to see how it sounds. If it makes you feel weird or feels cheesy, it probably is. Try being more straightforward and keeping a poetic flair where appropriate.

FIRST NAMES
Legal and/or Official: This is the name on legal documents. If there are no birth certificates, this name will be the equivalent of what you would put on legal documents. Not all people go by their legal or official name for several reasons. One reason could be that no one in a given culture goes by this name, but instead by a casual name. This name could be used for legal, religious, or political purposes. These names do not have to be given at birth.
Birth Name: The birth name is obviously the name given at birth, but it doesnât have to be right after birth. It can be days, weeks, or even months after. The birth name can also be a temporary name until an official name is chosen. It depends on the culture youâve created.
Given Name: The given name is the first name that people in Western society are referred to on a daily basis. For example, a person whose legal name is âDanielâ might go by âDanâ, or they might just go by âDanielâ.Â
Nickname: The nickname is different from shortened versions of names. While a person may prefer a shortened version of their name for casual use, a nickname of âDanielâ would be âDanny Boyâ. However, some nicknames are used regularly like the nicknames in Holes.
Religious or Spiritual Name: Some first names are chosen for religious purposes. This could be standard in the culture youâve created or it could be a casual occurrence.
Symbolic Name:Â
Appearance: Self-explanatory. However, these names might not appear until later in life.
Meaning: This refers to two things:
Author meaning: This is when you, the author, chooses a name, that exists in our world or that has roots from our world, because of its meaning.
Story meaning: This is when your characterâs name is chosen because it has meaning in their fictional world.

MIDDLE NAMES
Legal and/or Official: See above.Â
Birth Name: See above.
Given Name: A personâs given name might actually be their middle name (see example 2 below).
Religious or Spiritual Name: Religious and spiritual names that are given or chosen are often done so for religious and spiritual purposes. For example, in some versions of Catholicism, children choose a saintâs name to be Confirmed under, thus making this name their Confirmation name. Some people make this part of their legal name while others do not.Â
Symbolic Name: See above.
Meaning: See above.
Appearance: See above.

SURNAMES
Ancestral: These are surnames that come from an ancestor of an individual. They can also come from a place.
Chosen: Chosen names are self explanatory, but they can also fall in the adopted category below.
Hereditary: Hereditary surnames are surnames that have been passed down through generations and that are used by the family. Any name can eventually become a hereditary name.
Clan: A clan name is a name that shows a person is a descendant of a certain person. This brings all these descendants together because they claim the same lineage, thus making them a clan. Clan names can exist alongside another surname. This varies by culture and not everyone will be associated with a clan. These are similar to ancestral names, but ancestral names are more personal and individualistic.
Occupation: Surnames can come from a personâs job. These names
Adopted: An adopted surname is just that. It is chosen by a person who adopts it from someone else. Reasons for adopting a surname from someone else vary.
Forced: Forced surnames are names that are forced on a person. This can be through adoption, kidnapping, slavery, immigration, cultural change, certain marriage practices, and a few other situations.
Appearance: See above.
Place Name: Some surnames are based on where a person is from (âGeorge of Xâ).
None: Surnames do not exist everywhere.

ALL
Importance: Some names have significant importance to a culture. This importance can be political, religious, or just well known within a society. If certain names hold political importance (most likely surnames) and you are writing characters from well known families, make it known that their family name is important. For example, upon hearing your characters name, the behavior of others might change around them.
Taboo: Some names can be taboo or they can hold negative connotations based on historical context. For example, when people hear the name âAdolfâ, they think of Hitler. If your characters have a name that is considered taboo in your world, that may affect your character. Names can be taboo for any reason. It might be taboo to be named after a deceased paternal family member or it might be taboo for a child to be given the same name as the current ruler.
Outlawed: Not all names are up for use. There could be a written law that certain names are not to be used or there could be an unwritten law that using certain names is disrespectful. For example, naming children after deities or important figures in your worldâs culture could be considered illegal or at least deeply frowned upon.
Title: Like I said above, some titles can be considered names or at least part of a name. This probably wonât be part of a personâs legal name, but they might be addressed this way daily.
Syllables: Some names might be required to have a certain amount of syllables.
Epithets: Sometimes, if a child has the same name as the parent, something might be added to the name to differentiate between the two.Â
Traditional: Some people might have a traditional name to honor heritage or culture and an official or legal name.

NAME PATTERNS
Many cultures have certain prefixes or suffixes that indicate if a name if feminine, masculine, neither, or both. Make a list of suffixes or prefixes that are associated with gender to help keep naming patterns in your fictional world. You can also have different versions of the same name this way.

Below I will give examples of a fictional naming systems.
