makes me feel a little insane when I hear people have missed me. i am impacting your life in such a way that you not only appreciate my presence but notice my absence? and dislike it?? wow
Relationships require vulnerability. Maybe that’s why I don’t have many. As a kid, I was the quiet one. I learned early on that it’s better to bottle things up and act as if I’m okay—I don’t really know why I felt this knowledge so profoundly, my siblings never did. They’re so much better off for it.
I don't share too deeply about myself and, worse still, I feel myself pull away whenever someone tries to do so with me. I'm working on it, recognising the signs and being more conscious of my actions. I want to be able to build meaningful relationships. I do care about the people in my life.
Does this come easy to other people or are they just so much better at pretending?
I grew up as one of the very few non-white kids in my very white, very small primary school. I usually don't think too hard about it, but I'm sure it had a whole range of effects on my psyche.
One effect that I've been confronted with is this view that I couldn't possibly be attractive or desirable. I don't write this in a manner of self-loathing or even self-consciousness, I've just become aware that, in my mind, I somehow view this as a fact.
It's interesting because, as with everyone, some days I feel pretty and other days I don't. And yet even on the days I like the way I look, I can't even conceive of anyone else thinking the same.
Someone confessed their feelings for me recently and they said all these nice things and I felt a whole lot of things, but in the moment the thing I felt the most was uncomfortable. I felt squeamish and couldn't quite decided whether he was messing with me or not. I know he wouldn't say all that for the sake of a dare, we're not children, and yet...
It's funny how you don't even have to be conscious of the things happening to you in childhood in order to be shaped by them.
I've been thinking about first loves. Do they persist through time? Would you throw away your current life for someone you used to know?
There's this idea that you don't know anyone like you know those you loved in childhood and adolescence. It's romantic but I'm not sure I'm convinced. To be human is to change. After all those years, all those changes, can someone from your distant past truly still know you?
My own personal biases put me against the idea - I had a rather lonely childhood and felt misunderstood by those around me, I was always holding back. I can't think of anyone that I've lost contact with who would still know me deeply, should I run into them today. But maybe that doesn't mean anything in terms of the questions I'm asking, other than that I'm the wrong person to answer them.
If I'm being really honest, the idea of childhood first love being your true love fills me with jealousy more than anything. That the people who I surround myself with now, who I love, will always have those who love them more, who know them better, makes me feel - I don't know. Jealous? Envious? Some other word that's on the tip of my tongue but I can't quite find.
Or maybe it's resentment. Resentment that anyone who knew me as when I was younger knew the 'real' me, as if who I am now is a facade, as if I can never escape who I was. I can never truly become who I want to be.

Who gets to say that?
The main character in the book I'm reading clearly does not regard women highly, he sees them more as objects or constructs than as real people. Normally, I'd roll my eyes at this man and probably be a little put off the book. However, consider that the book itself was written by a woman. This made me more lenient, more willing to follow her character's journey and figure out the story she's trying to tell.
This has me thinking about who's 'allowed' to tell what stories; why am I suddenly curious and willing to read about this misogynistic man?
I don't have an answer to this question, but wanted to put it out there.
I was listening to a podcast the other day and the host said, simply, 'femininity isn't real.' She didn't elaborate and moved on rather quickly, but I've been stuck on this idea for a few days. She's right. Femininity is a social construct. That's not to say it's not important and people shouldn't engage with it, but the idea of 'returning to the divine feminine' or 'getting in touch with your feminine energy' or whatever other phrases people on TikTok love to use takes on a whole new meaning for me when I consider that femininity is a construct that was created under a patriarchal system - there's certainly nothing biological, innate about it. What then does it mean to be feminine?
I don't usually do a new year's resolution, and yet here I am - a little early even. My goal for 2026 is to engage more deliberately. I want to create a space here where I can share my thoughts on what I consume, not necessarily because I feel like people need to hear them but because I want a collection of them and this seems like an engaging way to do it.
I'm not sure what my timetable will look like but I'll try to be here, shouting my interests into this void. If anyone wants to engage with me please feel so free, I love hearing others' opinions on what I'm consuming.
I think a big thing that people are overlooking is how Hobie looks out for his own and how much that coincides with punk culture.
Him looking out for younger teens is so fucking punk of him. He lets Gwen stay with him because she's vulnerable and struggling, he makes her a watch, he lets her keep his shoes, etc. and it's not out of romance, it's because she's family. Same with Miles; he knows Miles is naive and wants to help him, because he's been in the spider society longer and he knows what's really going on. He sees the adults, who are supposed to mentor them, targeting Miles and he just knows it's flat-out wrong and that he wants no part of it.
Hobie takes on such a big brother role for the other characters and I love it. He's more mature than the other teens in so many aspects, and he uses his experience to teach them how to get by because that's what being punk is about
Currently reading: A Little Life
Currently feeling: absolutely nauseated. Sometimes fiction makes me happy and sometimes it makes me cry but I have never once before read a book that made me feel this close to throwing up. I’ve also never before read a book that made me this violently angry at a fictional character. The more that is revealed about Jude’s past, in relation to Brother Luke, the more both feelings grow.

i don't know when everyone around me decided that romantic relationships were more important/desirable than friendships but i think it's just making us all feel collectively lonelier. i hate it here :/
spoiler: it's apparently everything :(
just here to figure shit out and make friends :)
