it does seem that decorating yourself is a pretty basic human thing, but femininity treats decorating yourself as a design challenge rather than an artistic endeavour. in a matriarchy, you probably would paint your nails despite them restricting how you use your fingers, you might wear jangly jewelery that's impractical and uncomfortable, because the human body was made for more than just pure rigid practicality 24/7. old-timey men used to wear high heels as status symbol. but women are not the oppressor class, and it's the way in which we engage with femininity rituals that will inevitably make them harmful (for one, men wearing high heels don't have to be worried that a woman is going to chase them down and rape them). and then there's the inherent concern of the psychologial impact of viewing yourself as a customisable canvas rather than an animal - if you're already dehumanised in society, you're vulnerable to that type of thinking from the get-go.

men believe they are victims of the patriarchy because they are "emasculated" for not serving certain roles or told that they are acting like a girl if they do certain things. Their ultimate form of degradation is being identified with "woman" even for a moment. Their oppression is that they might be COMPARED to the female class, something that women must BE perpetually, living in a state of social degradation that one fucking drop of as admonishment sends men into a frenzy.

It's 2023 and you are allowed to want lesbian-only spaces. You are not evil for wanting what lesbians have wished for since forever and even sometimes achieved to build. You can and should take space yourself, away from anything that is making you feel bad about being a lesbian. We are an oppressed group and the last thing we need is to be further cornered into shame and self-hatred. Truly, seeing other lesbians is a BLAST. Seeing lesbians who don't apologise to those who continually hurt us, seeing lesbians who learned or are learning to love themselves is absolutely healing for our mental health. Seeing butches, seeing even gender-non-conforming or androgynous lesbians is so validating as well when you're one yourself and the representation is lacking. Being a lesbian is enough. You are whole already. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise. The best thing you can aim for if you didn't achieve that by now is to accept and love yourself for being exactly what you have always been. You were a lesbian little girl and now you're a lesbian woman. You bring more colours, more space to what it is to be a woman, to look like a woman. Loving other women is a gift, our love is seriously unmatched. 💖
