I am not a fan of being PC (politically correct). One example why:
I am disabled. Today I thought to look up the term "differently abled" to see exactly what it encompassed& came across an article about why that term should no longer be used. Basically, the article said that it was a term meant to be PC but wasn't actually PC. Okay, hmm... interesting. It then went on to say that the term originated without input from the disabled community& so came across as ableist. Oh, okay? "This is why the disabled community find terms like "differently abled," "special," and "inspirational" problematic." Wait... what? I'm a part of the disabled community& I was looking up the term to see if I would be correct in calling myself differently abled. I actually like the term over disabled. This article says I should just say disabled though because that's what the disabled community likes. They also talk about use of the word "normal"& I find it interesting that only ONE of the things on their "100% normal" list is actually "normal" to me.
Even these completely arbitrary examples are based off of society as a whole& are not 100% normal by their own definition. "Wanting to make a good impression on people at work" really made me laugh. I literally got fired one time because I chose to DO MY JOB instead of socializing with my female coworkers. So, if EVERYTHING is subjective, then USE DEFINITIONS. We have dictionaries for a reason& if someone is offended by a word (or words), then ask why. Is it actually offensive (like certain words with actual negative definitions or a history of negative use)? Or are there preconceived notions being implied (either by the person using the word(s) or the person interpreting)? Not everything needs to be changed or shyed away from because someone is offended. Someone you care about, respect, don't want to offend doesn't like something? Fine. Don't use it. Speak up for them to others if they can't for themselves. Realize that not everyone or everything necessarily needs to (or should!) change though. I am a VERY emotional person (I probably cry every single day)& yet, I'm constantly wondering why people are so emotional about the use of particular words or terms. Just breathe sometimes. There's much better things to put your energy into. Maybe grab a dictionary.
