Quick notice: I've been busier than I expected and will continue to be this July, so in the interest of fairness, I've bumped the application deadline to July 31st. I also edited the schedule to account for the delay. On the bright side: One more month to apply!
Will this zine be digital only or will there be physical copies?
Hi! The interest check showed a fair amount of interest in a physical release, but Iâm still considering. Iâll make a proper post about it closer to the zine release date, but what Iâll most likely wind up doing is printing a limited number of copies to order

Hello! I am preparing an essayist application, and I wanted to askâ is it okay to use embedded screenshots from the games within an application essay to serve as textual evidence for an analysis? I would be fine just using direct text quotes in a more traditional format, but since the series is a visual novel, would prefer if I could directly reference visuals that accompany the text in game.
However, I understand if youâd want to discourage using screenshots within the application essays if it wouldnât be aloud for the essays that will eventually published in the zine- I just wanted to check! Thank you so much for organizing this, this is such a cool project!!

Do the submissions in our portfolio need to be published or can we include polished unpublished works?
No, submission pieces don't need to be published!
Hello! I was working on my portfolio for the essayist applications, and I had a couple of questions.
First, the application info on the neocities page says we can submit 3-5 pieces, but I noticed the Google form only has space for 3, plus a space for a fourth/Ao3 profile/website. If I want to submit 5 pieces, what should I do?
Second, the application says that all portfolio materials should be SFW, which I'm taking to mean there should be no sexual content, but I wanted to make sure I had a full grasp of what that entails. Is there any other content I should avoid including in my portfolio?

Hi! You can paste links for both extra submissions into the fourth section you mentioned. I edited the form phrasing to be clearer! For the purposes of the zine, SFW means submitted content shouldn't sexual and that's about all. ^_^
Are we allowed to submit for both essayist and artist positions?
Yes! You can apply for both, but will only be selected for one role.
My thought would be that some polished pieces are necessary to judge an authorâs sensibilities and skill. But as far as confirming that applicants are familiar with the game material, what if we submitted a rough outline of one or two ideas we had that indicated familiarity/what we planned to draw on? Or would you accept a rough more âtumblr train of thoughtâ style example as proof of our familiarity with the games, as long as we also submitted some polished work? I am so so hyped for this and hope to be able to apply, but current state I know I just wonât have the time to write 2 new essays in the next month to apply for this, and I donât know if other folks would have that kind of nonfiction portfolio either. Either way, thanks for the work youâre doing to set this up!
Hi! You don't need to have any nonfiction work in your portfolio to apply. If you have two AA fanfics you're proud of, you're welcome to submit those. The "tumblr train of thought" example would also be fine so long as it was formatted properly (pasted into a document, capitalized, that kind of thing.) From the application guidelines page:
Your portfolio must consist of a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 works of fiction and/or nonfiction. Portfolio submissions must not exceed 3500 words each. All submissions must be SFW. At least 2 of the pieces you submit must be about Ace Attorney. Your submissions should be polished and reflect your best work. Excerpts from longer pieces are permitted, so long as they can be understood on their own. A nonfiction submission is not required, but is strongly encouraged. Meta posts are permitted if copy-pasted into a document and formatted as you would format a regular text submission. Submissions will be evaluated on writing style, voice, and organization, as well as on their understanding of game canon.

this will probably be hammered out once the interest check is over, but is there an expectation (or interest) in seeing media analysis in writer applications? its probably writer specific (ie; if im not writing analysis, it wouldnt be relevant), but as i think about what i might submit, im curious what, if any, preferences you have!! thank you :-))
Hello! We're definitely interested in seeing media analysis submissions, but we also understand not everyone has polished pieces of analysis they could use for a portfolio. The TL;DR of it is you're more than welcome to submit any relevant nonfiction, but it's not at all mandatory, and if you do submit nonfiction, you won't be forced to work in that same genre if you get accepted for the zine. I hope that answers your question! Keep an eye on this page for more info as we get closer to applications opening.
Hi! I'm not sure if this would fall under one of the categories you described (maybe a personal essay??) but I was curious if this zine would accept identity-based analyses, eg 'arguing that character A is autistic based on how they act/what they say in canon' or 'exploring character B through a racial/transgender/etc lens'. Thanks and looking forward to the zine regardless!
Hi! So long as it remains based in canon/doesn't draw on fanon, that would count as character analysis :-)
