i am always writing about you; i tap my fingers in strange patterns on paper, spelling out what i wish i could say, face to face. i forgot what it was like to hear you speak with meaning. i don’t know if i’ll ever remember. it is easy to pretend you listened once to the song of my body, the morse code of my blinking eyes. listen now if you cared once; i am not who i once was. i am not who you wrung out. hold your tongue if the words are empty. i forgive myself for taking my body apart, and leaving the pieces strewn across continents. silence your staring– i didn’t ask for reparations and i wouldn’t accept them if you offered. i choke on your name still, and my eyes burn. i blink back salt. i blink back salt. i spin around three times as if to shake off your spell. maybe this time when the sun comes out i won’t look for you in pavement shadows. i’ll cross the street with my eyes closed and trust my feet not to carry me back to what i left behind.
