I have this idea for a no-budget jam session lightshow with a few Reaper plugins, whatever the bass does at any given moment, and any free (and ideally open source) DMX controlling software that accepts MIDI input. (and loopmidi or something to connect the two, ok ok) I'll write about it in more detail later, but basically the gist is: music builds on bass. groove builds on bass. pulse (both visual and acoustic) builds on bass. atmosphere builds on bass and light and pulse/groove. we take information from the bass line to feed to our light setup in (basically) real time by running it through Reaper and letting different parameters trigger different MIDI cues. again, this is an idea for a basic setup - I have more ideas for more parameters to be taken from the bass line later on but I'll explain the fundamental idea first. so point 1 here is: notes/scales determine colours.
all Western music that in some way is an offshoot of blues (so basically everything) builds on a few modes, scales and scale steps. we can go fancy with genre specific scales or scale types or modes, and accord for blue notes etc (which we should and could) but basically, we can get very very far across genres with a few notes/steps from a few scales. what we do for a basic setup is: we take a few scales that are very common for the genre(s) we're working in, and the scale steps/root notes/... that a bass line would definitely have. maybe just a few major/minor scales and their respective steps I, IV, V, VI, maybe a blue note or two as well we pick a colour scheme for each scale, whatever might work. like, let's say A minor is now greens/blues, just because. so step I in A minor would give us light cue "greens/blues 1", step IV would give us light cue "greens/blues 2", step V would give us light cue "greens/blues 3" etc. we set a MIDI input for our colour cues such that any MIDI A ( as in, all the As in the tonal range of your bass) will trigger "colour cue greens/blues 1". if you do this for more than one scale you'll need to check for repeating notes across different scales, and adjust your light show accordingly. so we have our show output and we have cued it to our MIDI scale steps. and we have our bass player. what about the middle part? we feed a DI bass signal to a Reaper track. we add the (free, native) REAtune plugin to said track that will translate the incoming audio to MIDI notes, and let it write its MIDI to another track. we then feed the resulting MIDI translation (so, the Reaper MIDI track out) to our DMX controller and to all the channels in it that need it, via whatever way we have to connect the two. alright, step 2: strokes determine effect speed/onset the idea here is: the faster the strokes come, the faster and more dramatic the light show - on cue with the bass strokes.
so at least for the basic setup, you'd couple a few position/dimmer effects that you want to be determined by strokes with a MIDI note as a trigger - so they'll start as soon as a stroke happens, and restart at the next one, or ring/fade out more or less naturally if the strokes are slower.
(think "fast playing -> lights come on and off almost strobe-like, movingheads waving about wildly and in chopped movements" vs "slow strokes -> lights coming on and off more slowly, heads moving less abruptly".) (also, ideally you'd pick MIDI triggers that aren't already occupied by colour cues. unless you specifically want whatever that does. try it. I haven't so far.)
right. we have our strokes-determined light cues set up. we have our MIDI triggers specified. how do we get our input? back to the Reaper bass track: we put another free, native plugin on it. this time it's REAgate, which we set to "gate triggers MIDI note". now whenever the gate opens or closes, a MIDI signal will be sent. we (of course) route the MIDI output from the gate into our DMX controller and to the respective channels/cues, and make sure the triggered note is the one we actually want to use.
then we tune (or set) our gate to a comfortable value that Makes Lights Good. which just means: sit at your desk for a bit and try out where you want it to be for the effects to be triggered in a way you like. depends on the way your bassist is playing, on general signal strength, whatever.
and there you go. DAW lightshow for the low low price of a few nights of fiddling. small enough you can have it on a USB stick in your pocket, or even on your phone, and pull it up to whatever Methusalem laptop people can find at your venue.
