I’ve been hungry. Always so hungry. It’s all I can remember from those days I could barely reach the shelves. I climbed, stuck my hands inside, only to find them empty. Once I was tall enough to reach, it was too late. The desire had gone. I already knew what was behind those small doors. I was so sure that knowing my deepest craving did not exist would have made that hunger leave me be once and for all. It instead took me completely, drove me toward the scents I found most sweet though I knew I would never allow myself the indulgence. When I came close, I always thought of the empty cabinets. This endless greed had consumed me so thoroughly that I found I’d been devoured by my own teeth. Always biting when I should be kissing. Always letting myself burn when I should be lighting the room. I keep telling myself I can have both. Even while breathless and cold, I keep saying I have both.
