“You look beautiful,” it still amazed Alix that one of her beloved children had survived along with her, and now they were back together, the last survivors of the Romanovs.
“We’ll be going through to the press conference any moment now.”
“No- please- don’t leave!” Anya begged, reaching out to her again. How was she supposed to explain that if Alix left she likely would run, run away from it all. Run away from cameras. “I just want it to be me and you as family a little longer.”
“We will always be a family.” Alix soothed though she stayed with her daughter. “You don’t have to be afraid, I will protect you now.” She drew Anastasia in for a hug, “we will never be separated ever again, I promise.”
“But as soon as the world knows- I don’t want them to know.” She admitted, burying her face in her mother’s neck and inhaling a scent that could never be forgotten in her memory. “Please..don’t tell the world.”
"Alright, alright, we won't tell the world, we'll donate the money to charity. Any charity you wish." Alix soothed, to see Anastasia so upset broke her mother's gentle heart.

“Oh my darling,” cupping Maria’s face in her hands Alix studied the girl’s face as if committing it to memory.
“I’m here my darling, we’re together now, everything will be alright,” Alix said pressing the girl to her chest and hoping never to let go of her again. She wouldn’t be able to bear parting from her dear sweet Maria again.
Maria tried to smile through her tears at her mother. Her hair was graying, and there were some wrinkles around her eyes and mouth; then again, she was nearing sixty, with a daughter that was almost thirty. She wasn’t as Maria remebered her, but she was alive, and real, not another dream. It had taken her a decade, but she was in her mother’s arms again.
She was a little chargined that she was now taller and couldn’t exactly fit in her sweet mama’s embrace, but that didn’t stop her. “Promise me you’ll never leave me again,” she whispered brokenly. She vaguely recalled her standing, and someone taking her away. Maria’s world turned black as someone else gathered her in their arms, whispering apologies.
“I promise, my dear one, never again,” Alix vowed, rubbing Maria’s back. Her sweet Maria was alive!
Alexandra may have lost her husband and her other children, but at least she had Maria back.
"Don't cry, my darling, Mama's here."

A sob ripping from her throat, Alix rushed to embrace her daughter, her only surviving daughter. She had given up hope of ever holding her children ever again, yet here was one of her children, blessedly alive.
“Oh, my darling, let me look at you.”
Maria wound her arms tight around her mother, and nuzzled her shoulder. She couldn’t help the sob that escaped her, nor the broken whisper of “I’m here, mama,” that she kept repeating, trying to inhale her soothing scent to calm herself.
Maria, even back when she was just Anya, had dreams of her mother’s embrace. It was one of the few things she remembered, and it kept her warm when the temperatures dropped low enough to kill her. It was the memory of that embrace that kept her walking, even when she had wanted to curl up under a tree and never wake up again.
“I missed you so much, mama.”

“What could you possibly want from me? I’m just a grieving mother, who’s given up hope of ever seeing my children again… what could you possibly want other than to make me believe you’re her?”
Anya’s hand went to her necklace, fidgeting with it, as she heard her ask her what it was that she did want. And then the woman was practically going off on her about how she was a grieving mother. And, honestly, she wasn’t sure what she could say to make the older woman see her in a better way.
“Honestly… I don’t know if you can give me what I want…. I don’t know if anyone can.” Her hand fell from the necklace, letting it hang out in the open. Perhaps if she told her story, she’d see her in a better life, but she’d let the woman ask for details. She wanted the woman to decide for herself, not use lessons that Dmitri told her to do. If she understood who Dmitri told her she was well enough, she wasn’t one for following the rules. Which meant not following protocol would be fine… assuming she actually was determined to be Anastasia.
She cleared her throat. “Ten years ago, I woke up at a train station in St. Petersburg with no memory of who I was, with only this necklace as a clue, and it lead me to Paris. In the last year or so, I’ve had some memories, but they don’t make sense, and the nightmares make even less sense. But… that’s what I want. To know who I am, who my family is.”
“And you think I might be your family,” Alix’s tone wasn’t cold but it wasn’t exactly warm either, she might as well humor the girl as she’d humored all the other imposters in the vain hope that one of them would be one of her beloved children.
“What do you remember?”

“Hush, Mama’s here, everything’s going to be alright.”
He had fallen off the edge of the boat, trying to jump off like all the other boys, it was stupid, really, but he just wanted to have fun. He whimpers now, trying his best to not react to the pain. Russians were strong, weren’t they? He could be too, just for now, just for right now. The car jerks, and he yelps, Alexei’s hand going out to grip his dripping leg. He’s not sure when it had started actually bleeding, but by the swelling it must of been recent. “It hurts! It really -“ Another yelp, he wishes the car would just stop moving, please. “It really hurts!”
God, how could have been so stupid? He would never be like other boys, he knew that. How could he have been so stupid. “Make it stop!”
“Sh, sh, my darling,” Alix said stroking Alexei’s hair and trying in vain to soothe him. She’d told the driver to hurry back to the palace, but it only seemed to cause her son more pain.
“It’s alright, it will stop soon, my love.”
“Make it stop. Please..” Alexei’s is practically screaming, but maybe that’s because he can practically feel his heartbeat in his ear. There’s one harsh bump that almost sends him flying, his head almost hitting the door. That was enough to cause a black out, apparently, because he wakes up what seems like hours later with a headache that could probably rival a hangover.
“Ow..” He mumbles it, trying to sit up in the cot they had in the hunting villa, looking around the room until it hits him that he got hurt again. Staring down at his leg he winces, his body falling back into the bed as he swears quietly to himself and throws a pillow. “Mama?” He tries it carefully, not liking how his mouth tasted like blood as the doctor works around him. “This sucks.”
Alix was at Alexei’s side the moment he showed any sign of waking, she had her daughter’s praying for their brother’s return to health, and her husband had gone outside to smoke.
“I’m here,” Alix soothed pushing Alexei’s hair off his forehead with a soft, motherly touch. As the doctor hovered like a vulture, Alix couldn’t help but admonish her son a little.
“Watch your language, Alexei.”

It couldn’t be her, Alix tried to reason, but she couldn’t deny the girl looked like her Maria. Tears stung the former Empress’ eyes, blurring her vision momentarily.
“M-Maria, is it really you?”
Maria smoothed her dress out for the umpteenth time that evening, a habit she vaguely remembered having since childhood. She immediately turned on the sound of heels on the marble floor, with a sharp remark ready, only to meet a face she had been dreaming of for years.
“Mama?”
The former Tsarina stood tall as she always did, but Maria always knew when her mother was trying to hide her feelings. It was one of the few things she had inherited from her; putting the rest of the family before themselves, hiding what was going on inside them. But she wasn’t hiding this time. She could see a dampness in her eyes, and her voice was breaking, the way it never did in her memories.
“It’s me, Mama; Mash'ka.”

Alix paused, the girl was right the amnesia story was very convenient but then she spoke about Alexei and Tatiana. She spoke with such familiarity calling them by their nicknames, names only the family called them.
“You’re right,” Alix heard herself say, almost as if she were watching a play. How could this imposter know those names?
“What else do you remember?”
The tone changed, her expression changed and for a moment she felt hope rising in the air. Maybe her few memories weren’t wrong and maybe just maybe this woman was giving her the chance to explain. Maybe she was her mother. She could see a faint resemblance in the eyes and nose, features she had always searched for in older women she’d pass by in hope of recognizing them and being able to call them family. Her family.
“Memories come and go. There’s…there’s nothing really concrete, but…I remember dressing up with three other girls and putting on plays in a room filled with sunlight.” She breathed as shimmering blue eyes welled with tears. “White gloves stained with chocolate in a theater…an opera maybe?”
Anastasia never kept her gloves clean, no matter how Alix scolded. The memory made tears fill the former Emperess’ eyes. No other imposter had spoken of such memories.
Perhaps...
No! She shouldn’t get her hopes up. But still, Alix pushed on, she had to know.
“Anything else?”

Anya looked over to the older woman. This was it, this was what Dmitri helped her get to Paris for. She had a chance to find her family. And this woman, the former Empress of Russia, very well might be her mother. What she hadn’t expected, however, was to hear that people were pretending to be the lost Anastasia… any of the siblings, really. A part of her was actually offended on her behalf. And a thought occurred to her, was this what Dmitri was doing with her? She had come here with the hope of finding her real family, but… what if Dmitri had never thought that she was Anastasia and was just taking advantage of her amnesia.
“I’m not trying to con you. I didn’t even know about the reward.” It was the truth, though she doubted that the former Empress would believe that. It wasn’t as if the orphanage often received newspapers. And it didn’t even occur to her to pick one up until right about… well, now.
“Then what do you want, if not the money?” Alix asked, the girl certainly had the Romanov look. But she had seen any number of girls with the same blue eyes and red hair.

How was she going to say that she lived to be an example. An example of a broken empire, but as the mother of dead children. Anya herself would be so much more at risk- she was young, and above all else she was her father’s child. “I’m nearly 27, i’m not that young.” It was her worst fear to be stuck with someone who didn’t truly want her but rather her name. “I’m just scared, Mama.”
“Don’t be, I’m here.” Alix said, “we’re together now, as we should be, it’s not perfect, but we’re alive and we’re a family again.” A knock at the door signaled that they were ready for Alix.
“Do not fret, my love. stay here, I’ll be back in a little while.”

She turned slowly, careful not to get tripped up in the red dress that seemed to flow around her. It had been quite some time since she wore such a thing. “Oh, thank you.” Her mother complimented her. Her own mother. It still fet too good to be true.
“Press conference? Oh, Mama..I wanted to talk to you about that.”
“What about it?” Alix asked smoothing away a stray hair from Anastasia’s face, she’d never thought she’d see this day, the day one of her lost lambs returned to her.
“I wish your Papa could see you now, so grown… he’d be proud of you, Anastasia.”
“I..I don’t- Mama.” She whimpered, the emotional toll of the past days finally catching up to her. The journey to Paris, seeing her mother- it was so much, “I don’t think i’m ready to face the world.” Anya admitted, taking her mother’s hands. “I’m not ready to step into that light again…”
“My darling,” Alix said squeezing Anastasia’s hands rubbing her thumbs over the girl’s knuckles. Pressing a kiss to Anastasia’s forehead, “You don’t have to meet the press if you don’t want to, but we have to announce that you have been found.”
