Hello, so I'm really bad at posting on this page (I'm sorry) but I wanted to go a bit more indepth with this piece. It's based off of Kim Namjoon (BTS) UN speech in which he asked, "'What is your name? What excites you and makes your heart beat?' Tell me your story." So, this is the beginning of my story for a series. I grew up bilingual. I spoke Vietnamese at home, while English everywhere else. I grew up translating things for my parents, and those were things I was used to. Being bilingual, you understand that there are things that you simply can't translate to have the same impact as the former language, or else it'll be weird. Sentences in English like, "My foot's asleep" would always have my grandpa go, "How does a foot go to sleep?" or in Vietnamese to English, "Oh, don't eat watermelon, that's hot" when being "hot" doesn't mean temperature.
Continuing with that, when I went abroad to Japan, I began to pick up Japanese because 1.) I lived in a small town, and 2.) my host parents didn't speak much English, my brain simply panicked and picked up the language quickly. I soon began to realize that with the subtitles with the anime I was watching, it wasn't fully translating the words to the full impact. Then, there were Vietnamese students there, and I couldn't talk to them the same way I could speak in English because of my limited knowledge. Ahh, language is confusing.
So, here's this series. I don't know where this series will go, or how far it will go. I just want to press start. There are thoughts in my brain that I can't fully express very well in words-and maybe it's because of my lack of words, but regardless, I don't know how to say them properly. So I hope that the translation of what goes in my brain helps--if that makes any sense.
