Dr. Christine Palmer was six hours into a twelve hour shift when her nice quiet (for once) ER became anything but. An EMT call came over the radio. “Metro-General, this is Ambulance 394 en route to your location with a Caucasian female, approximately 30 years old, unconscious, multiple GSWs to chest and abdomen, substantial blood loss. ETA five minutes.”

Shit. She scrambled to her feet, barking orders at the nurses. “Clear a room and get me twelve units of o neg, STAT!” She wanted to get ahead, be a little prepared for a change rather than have people running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

When the patient came in, she was as ready as she was going to get. “Take her to trauma three,” Christine told the EMTs. “Get a CBC, type and crossmatch, get fluids going, two large bore IVs, saline wide open, prep for transfusion” she told the nurse as the EMTs transferred the still unconscious woman to the hospital gurney. “Ma’am can you hear me?” she asked, and one of the EMTs shook his head, indicating that she had not regained consciousness on the trip over. But it had to be done. Just in case.

They had not been kidding about the amount of gunshot wounds. Christine surveyed the woman’s body after her clothing was removed, looking over the wounds. Some were through and through, and some were not. That was definitely troubling. “She’s definitely pre-op, notify the OR, get me a room. She’ll need x-rays and an EKG,” she rattled off, palpating the patient to check for possible broken bones. Satisfied that there were no major breaks, she took charge of the patient, intending to do the surgery herself.

Once in the elevator on the way up to the OR, Christine let herself breathe. As she watched, her patient coded and she began CPR but to no avail. She glanced at her watch to note TOD and changed course, taking the body to the morgue. Her heart felt heavy as the elevator doors opened. Christine was startled out of her wits when halfway down the hall, the body on the gurney jackknifed upright and gasped. She was dead. What the hell?

Her eyes wide as dinner plates, she thought deprecatingly to herself that she should be used to this sort of thing, after what had happened with Stephen. The woman on the gurney looked around wildly and Christine asked, “You’re not with that cult of Stephen’s are you?” She honestly didn’t know what else to say. She had no idea what was going on.

She paused a moment and thought. “Hmmm, I’d wonder if it was some sort of healing magic but if they had something that could heal someone that much, surely they’d have healed his hands.” She shook her head. “Never mind that now. You’re clearly not dead, and you can’t stay here.”

One of Erin’s brows arched ever so faintly.

Either the woman in front of her was a receptive telepath; Erin had developed some sort of passive mind control or mental influence ability she hadn’t recognized yet or the woman had snuck ‘not so dead’ people out back doors before.

Erin suspected the latter. Which begged the question: who or what cult was this Stephen in if they had previously required aid in hiding the fact they weren’t dead? Was there an actual necromancy cult in New York Erin should be aware of? Necromancy had its uses but most people had about as much moral fortitude with the use of it as a turnip and abused it—just like everything else that deserved a little proper respect.

That was the only explanation for the quick dismissal of the ‘impossible’ nature of the situation and the equally fast acceptance of ‘not dead as dead was’.

Also ‘healing magic’? Was there an actual enclave of magic users somewhere in New York Erin was not aware had set up residence in the last few decades? Entirely possible and potentially useful--and problematic--but she’d worry about that later.

Because the woman had just offered everything Erin needed on a silver platter. Bit too good to be true but one problem at a time.

Erin maintained her befuddled cultist ingénue act. “I…yes?” She tugged the sheet closer. “That would…yes that would help immensely.” She allowed herself a slightly chagrined wince. “Could I trouble you with helping me fetch my coat as well? The one they removed or cut off? All my identification was in there you see…” She let the words trail off the implication unsaid but plain.

If the woman had inferred as much as she had already she wouldn’t need more than that to recognize the problem of a not so dead cultist leaving behind identifying materials.

“I am so sorry to trouble you. This must be such an imposition.”
