That moment when you realize you can literally be replaced by a pigeon.

Histologists, pathologists and radiologists spend years acquiring and refining the medically essential visual skills required to diagnose disease using medical images. This blog (www.ihearthisto.com) is evidence of those skills - I mean anyone who can see a Van Gogh masterpiece in the swirling connective tissue whorls of an ovary, or identify the face of Kanye in the cross section of a human penis has got to have the pattern recognition skills of a pro, right?

As it turns out, pathologists aren’t the only high fliers with amazing visual a-coo-ity. These guys could soon be out of a job after researchers demonstrated that pigeons can diagnose cancer. After training these talon-ted birds with differential food reinforcement they were able to distinguish benign tissue from malignant tumors when observing histological images of human breast tissue.

Even more importantly, the pigeons were also able to generalize what they had learned when confronted with novel image sets. In other words when shown images they had never seen before they were still able to pick out the ones that contained tumors.  They weren’t just winging it, they are pathology eggsperts.

Surprisingly, pathologists’ feathers have not been ruffled by this news. Instead of crying fowl and getting all bittern and emu-tional about the soaring success of their winged rivals, they are egg-static about the prospect of a new flock of in-terns available to start pigeon in to an already heavy work birden.
