The cool night air kissed your skin as you walked to the van. Nerves ran through your veins at the sheer thought of being in the same room as Steve, let alone such a confined space.
Neither of you had spoken to one another in over a year, and now you were forced to work together, meaning there would have to be some form of communication.
You were dreading it. You didnāt want to talk to Steve and you were sure he didnāt want to talk to you.
The breakup was messy and one too many unkind words were said. No matter how true they were, it cut through both of you like a knife.
By now, the mature thing to do would be to talk about it and figure out where to go from there, because deep down, your souls were intertwined and craved one another. But neither of you could muster up enough strength to do so, especially when you both thought neither of you wanted anything to do with each other.
Your hand grasped the door handle and a sigh escaped your lips before opening the door to the back of the Squawk van, climbing inside and slamming it shut.
You kept your gaze down and moved to sit in the spot Dustin usually did and placed the headphones onto your head. You glanced up and saw that Steve was staring at you through the mirror.
When he asked how he was going to drive and monitor, he didnāt think youād be the one to come in and help, though, he supposed he shouldāve seen that one coming since you built the damn thing.
His eyes were locked on you through the mirror, looking over your features as if he was mourning your loss, never wanting to forget your face.
Because he was mourning you.
He was mourning the girl who had forgiven him and would do it a million times over again. He was mourning the girl who told him it was okay to feel, even though she couldnāt do it herself. He was mourning the girl whose face he could kiss all over because she felt like home.
He was mourning the girl he loved.
You glanced up at the mirror, then back down. āYou gonna drive or just stare at me, Harrington?ā you asked, your words coming out a little harsher than intended.
For the first time in a year and a half, you were directly speaking to him.
And thatās the first thing you said.
Already off to a perfect startā¦
Steve blinked and turned the van on, driving away from the Squawk and to the nearby alleyway, parking there.
The entire ride was silent and he tried so hard not to look up into the mirror and see you, but it was like he had no control over where his eyes went.
You never once looked anywhere near his direction and he hated the way it made him feel almost sorrowful.
A part of him wanted you to look into the mirror and make eye contact with him. Maybe heād smile and youād return it. But the other part of him didnāt want that to happen, because maybe if you did talk about what happened, you wouldnāt want to be with him. Maybe youād only want to be friends and Steve Harrington couldnāt live like that.
He didnāt want to be your enemy and he sure as hell didnāt want to be your friend.
He wanted to be your boyfriend. Your husband. The one could go to when times got rough, but instead he had become the person you ran from.
He reached into the passenger seat and grabbed a Bopper that Murray smuggled in for him, opening it and taking a bite.
You closed your eyes, listening to the painfully annoying sound of him chewing.
āWhat?ā he asked you, glancing up into the mirror.
āDo you have to chew so loud?ā you grumbled, opening your eyes and looking at him through the mirror.
He narrowed his eyes and you, taking another bite, this time chewing obnoxiously loud.
āAsshole,ā you muttered under your breath, rolling your eyes.
āHenderson, signal?ā Joyce asked through the walkie.
You grabbed the walkie in one hand, using the other to move the wheel at the top of the van, looking over to the decoder to ensure you caught the signal. āSnagged it,ā you radioed back.
Steve took yet another bite, his mouth full of food as he spoke. āShould I move?ā
āNo,ā you replied, eyes fixated on the screen. āAnd stop talking with your mouth open, itās disgusting.ā
āYouāre annoying.ā
āYeah, you too.ā
You watched as the dB went up on the screen. āHold,ā you said at 33dB. āHold.ā 38 dB. āHold.ā 48dB. The decoder beeped as the dB skyrocketed up to 90dB. āGo!ā
Steve put the van into drive, following a steady speed down the road.
Everything was running smoothly, the tracker set to a constant 90dB and the soft beeps filling your ears at a rhythmic pace as Steve drove at a good speed.
That was until everything went wrong.
Your eyes widened at the screen, the dB dropping exponentially. āShit! Weāre losing him!ā
Steve blinked. āWait what?ā
āStop! Stop!ā
Steve slammed on the brakes, and your body yanked forward, your grip on the wheel tightening to ensure that you didnāt go anywhere.
He immediately turned around, making sure that you were okay.
You grunted as you spun the wheel, holding a steady 47dB again. āGot him,ā you breathed out.
You glanced up at Steve and he let out a sigh of relief, turning around to face the road again.Ā
You reached for the walkie, contacting the others. āWhat is going on?ā
āIām not sure,ā Joyce replied.
A few moments later, the decoder began flashing, wiring to life. The car lights on the dash lit up, the headlights surging. āOh, shit! Shit! Shit!ā you exclaimed, taking your headphones off and setting the walkie down.
Steve turned around, eyes wide. āWhat the hell is happening?ā
āPower surge,ā you informed him, moving frantically to turn everything off in time.
āA what?!ā
āTurn the car off!ā
āHuh?ā
āSteven! Turn the car off!ā
āWhy?!ā
āShut up and turn the car-!ā
The machine sparked in front of your face, making you jump back and cover your face with one hand.
At the same time, the car shut off. Not because Steve turned it off, but because the battery went dead.
You huffed, slowly turning your head to Steve with an annoyed expression.
āWhat was that?ā he asked.
You rolled your eyes. āA power surge, which by the way, wouldāve been prevented had you listened to me and turned the damn car off,ā you scolded him, clear annoyance laced in your tone.
Steve blinked. āOh, so now this is my fault?ā
āUh, yeah?ā you scoffed. āHow hard is it to take the fucking keys out of the ignition?ā
Steve scoffed and rolled his eyes. āWell, my fucking bad.ā
āYeah, your fucking bad.ā
It was quiet for a moment, both of your words lingering in the air.
Your expression softened slightly. You didnāt mean to snap at him, but now because he couldnāt follow simple directions, you had no way of ensuring Hopperās safety.
And now Steve felt like an idiot. He knew that you knew he wasnāt always the brightest person in the roomā¦or so he thought. Steve thought you were one of the smartest people he knew and he hated how sometimes his own brain couldnāt think or comprehend as fast as yours could.
He was slightly embarrassed by what just happened and you could tell.
You had known him long enough to know. His knee was bouncing up and down as he ran a finger against his mustache stubble.
Whichā¦
You were kinda into the stubbleā¦
āSoā¦ā Steve trailed off. āNow what?ā
āI donāt know,ā you breathed out, rubbing your eye with the back of your hand. Steveās heart tugged at the sight. āVanās dead and this is no use,ā you grumbled, motioning a hand to the decoder.
Steve pulled his lips into a tight line, sighing and facing forward again.
You ran a hand through your hair and shut your eyes before reaching for the walkie. āAnyone know what the hell just happened?ā you asked.
A few moments later, Robin replied. āWe arenāt too sure, but Will just said a demo is headed for the Wheelerās place. Nance and El are headed over now, but Iāll keep you posted.ā
Steve shifted and turned around to face you. Your eyes were blown wide. The power surge made sense now. A demogorgon was near.
Just on the other side.
You and Steve had been sitting in the van for what felt like hours, not uttering a word to one another.
As time went on, Steve waited for someone to swing by so he could get a jump.
Some girl pulled over and ended up helping. Steve was outside of the van jumping it while you were on the walkie getting updates from Nancy.
You sighed when finished and set the walkie down. You climbed into the front passenger seat, propping your feet up on the dash as you looked out the window.
Your mind wandered after getting off of the walkie with Nancy.
Something wasnāt making sense here.
āWell, this better be quick,ā Steve said, opening the door and climbing inside. You glanced over at him as he shut the door. āOur good samaritanās turning sour. I think she might have placed me.ā
āHuh?ā you blinked.
āStood up her sister,ā Steve sighed looking out the window. You looked over to him, heart sinking. āMultiple occasions,ā he added, making it even worse.
He glanced over at you and noticed how your expression had changed. āI mean, before we started uhā¦you know- before weā¦ā he stumbled over his words. āThat was before we dated.ā
āOkay,ā you muttered, looking away.
āI didnāt stand her up after we broke up.ā
āGot it.ā
āI havenāt dated anyone since-ā
āOkay, I said I got it.ā
It was quiet for a beat as Steve watched you with your head turned looking out the window.
āDid you get a hold of Nance?ā he asked.
You still didnāt look at him as you spoke. āHer dad is in an induced coma and her mom is in surgery. Theyāre not gonna know anything for a couple hours. And uhā¦ā you trailed off. āThe demo took Holly.ā You glanced over at Steve, then away again. āInto the Upside Down.ā
āJesus Christ, man,ā Steve sighed, running a hand down his face.
You stared straight ahead. āYeahā¦ā
āWell, you think we should go see her at the hospital?ā Steve asked. āI mean, if we can get this hunk of junk moving.ā
āHmmā¦ā you hummed, rubbing your forehead. āNo. We should stick to the plan and just try to find Hopper, find El, find Holly.ā
āRightā¦ā Steve trailed off, staring at the steering wheel. āJustā¦That seems complicated.ā
You blinked, looking over to him with narrowed eyes. āWhat about that is complicated?ā
āWellā¦just- Like, it might take a lot of time,ā he said briefly, not bothering to look at you.
You tilted your head slightly. āOkay?ā
āYou know, the hospital is on the way. We could just swing by, bring Nance some, like, flowers or something.ā
His gaze finally met yours. You stared at him, an unreadable expression on your face.
You shifted, turning away from him to look out the window to your side.
āWhat?ā he asked.
āThree people are missing and youāre worried about bringing Nancy flowers?ā you scoffed, shaking your head. āNot to mention, she has a boyfriend, Steve. That seems highly inappropriate.ā
Here was the thing.
Steve wasnāt really planning on getting Nancy flowers. He just wanted to get you flowers, under the excuse of it being for Nancy. Which was still inappropriate for the occasion and wouldāve pissed you off even more had he done it, but he was trying.
He was trying to get you back.
āI just,ā he faltered, playing with his fingers. āI donāt know. Iām just being considerate.ā
You laughed, a genuine laugh as you turned to face him. āConsiderate?ā
Steveās eyes widened slightly. āWhy is this funny to you?ā
āYou? Considerate?ā you asked with raised brows. āBullshit.ā
Steve narrowed his eyes at you. āWhat? You think youāre perfect? Iām just trying to make things right.ā
And as soon as those words left his mouth, he regretted it. Your expression dropped slightly.
You shook your head. āNo, I donāt think Iām perfect. I know that Iām far from it,ā you mumbled, eyes staring out the window.
Steve looked over to you, expression soft. He was doing it again. He was about to speak without thinking, but this time, the words would come out naturally, heād say everything heād been meaning to say for over a year. Heād say all the right words and youād fall in love all over again with him.
āLook, I-ā
Suddenly, the girl honked her horn, staring daggers into Steve.
He sighed, glancing over at you one more time before opening the door. He froze and you looked over his shoulder, eyes wide.
āYouāve got to be shitting me,ā Steve said.
āFuck, Dustinā¦ā you trailed off.
Dustin rolled his bike up, face covered in blood.
āAnd by sheer luck, Jessica was coming back from a party, and I charmed my way into getting us a jump. Which brings us to you, arriving looking like Rocky Balboa,ā Steve said, updating Dustin who was now in the passenger seat. He was looking up in the mirror trying to clean his face up with a few tissues.
You were busy in the back trying to find Hopper, headphones on. When Dustin showed up you were relieved for about five seconds before you realized that his face was covered in blood.
Of course, he wouldnāt tell you or Steve what happened. But you had a gut feeling about it anyway.
āSo basically,ā Steve went on. āOf all the crawls, this was, like, the one to miss,ā he lectured Dustin. So, well done, Henderson. Really, really, like, well done.ā He let out a dry laugh before turning back to the road.
Dustin leaned his head against the seat, looking out the window without a word falling from his lips.
Steve looked over to him, then back to the road. āSpeechless. Thatās new.ā
He glanced up into the mirror. You were moving the wheel around every now and then, eyes fixated on the screen trying to find Hopper, which was growing increasingly more difficult as Steve kept talking. You didnāt want to tell him to be quiet though, you still felt bad from earlier.
Steve noticed the way you bit your lower lip, brows pressed together as you focused.
It was cute.
You were cute.
Why the hell did you have to start looking even better after the breakup?
āIām still processing, Steve,ā Dustin said, sitting up straight. āItās a lot.ā Steve nodded, a sarcastic look on his face. āHolly?ā Dustin thought out loud. āWhy Holly?ā He looked back up into the mirror to clean up more of the blood on his face.
And that was the very same thing you were wondering.
Why did Henry need Holly of all people? It didnāt make any sense.
āWell, maybe Eleven could tell us, but itās a bit difficult to contact her now that weāve lost our connection to the Upside Down.ā
Dustin rolled his eyes. āOkay. For the future, when the lights go from really bright to really dim, it means the generator is surging so you have to turn everything off,ā Dustin explained as if he were saying it to the dumbest five year old on the planet.
You glanced up, unable to focus with all the bickering.
āWow.ā
āImmediately,ā Dustin added, looking over to Steve. āIf only someone wouldāve told you that,ā he said, in a fake thought. āOh, wait! She did and you didnāt listen!ā Dustin scolded, pointing his thumb back at you.
āGreat, thank you for that, Henderson,ā Steve said dryly. āYeah, and Iāll remember that the next time that happens. Or, maybe, and this is just a suggestion here, you could actually be where youāre supposed to be.ā
āI was on route to the Squawk!ā Dustin shouted.
You pulled the headphones off, placing it around your neck.
āWhen you fell off your bike. Thatās right,ā Steve said. āRemind me. What did you fall into again? A knuckle sandwich?ā
āHey,ā you finally spoke up, making Steve glance back at you. āCan you guys, like, keep it down. Iām trying to listen to a signal back here, you know?ā
Steve sighed and apologized quietly, though it went unheard by you.
You huffed and put your headphones back on, returning your attention back to the tracker.
āWho was it?ā Steve asked Dustin. āWas Andy and his goons, wasnāt it? You just poked the bear one too many times.ā
āYour concern for me is overwhelming, Steve,ā Dustin said sarcastically.
āMy concern?ā Steve repeated with a scoff. āI have shown nothing but concern for you, since forever. And I have been repeatedly ignored, and now look whatās happened. We are totally and royally screwed.ā
āCorrection, we are screwed because you donāt know how to do the most basic thing like prevent a power surge,ā Dustin snapped, raising his voice. āOr follow simple directions such as turning a car off!ā
āSee, this? This right here is your problem.ā
āItās the easiest thing in the world.ā
āYou canāt admit you were wrong.ā
āMy mother could prevent a power surge.ā
āYou canāt admit it.ā
āShockingly enough, I think your mother-ā
āJesus Christ!ā Steve snapped. āJust do it for once! Just admit it, Henderson! Youāre wrong! You screwed up!ā
āHey!ā you shouted, yanking your headphones off. āShut the hell up! Both of you!ā You let out an annoyed sigh, putting your headphones back on. āJeez,ā you huffed, rolling your eyes.
The van was dead silent, until none other but your little brother couldnāt keep his mouth shut. āYou two seem to be getting along,ā Dustin said.
āYeah, well in this case I actually like her suggestion,ā Steve said calmly. āI donāt wanna talk to you anymore,ā he grumbled, staring straight ahead at the road.
āGood, I donāt wanna talk to you either.ā
āGood.ā
Dustin leaned his head against the window. āGood.ā
Not only had Steve pissed off the eldest Henderson, he had pissed off the youngest too.
He wondered if getting either of you back was a lost cause.
Youād been driving around all night, and nothing.
The van was painfully silent too, nothing being said after Steve and Dustinās argument.
Steve glanced up in the mirror. āHey, Iām gonna turn on Irwin. One more loop around the zone?ā
You sighed, growing frustrated with a lack of leads. āYeah, go ahead.ā
That was when something changed.
You froze, eyes going wide.
Some sort of chittering nose was filling the headphones. āNo, wait,ā you backtracked, reaching up for the wheel. āI think I got something.ā
āSeriously?ā Steve asked.
Dustin turned around. āIs it Hop?ā
āUhā¦ā you trailed off, brows pressing together. āI donāt know. Thereās nothing on the decoder, but I can definitely hear something.ā
Dustin climbed into the backseat.
āIs that him?ā Joyce asked through the walkie.
Dustin snatched the headphones off of your head, putting them on. āDude, really?ā you groaned. You reached for the walkie, radioing Joyce. āWeāre not sure.ā
āNo. Itās not him,ā Dustin concluded, taking the headphones off.
āThen what is that?ā you asked.
āI donāt know, it could be a million different things,ā Dustin said. āMilitary broadcast, T.V. channel, any EMI within our frequency zone. But one thing I do know though is that itās not Hopās telemetry tag, because if it was-ā
āIt would show up on here,ā you interrupted, pointing to the decoder. āYeah, I know. But itās still weird, isnāt it?ā
Dustin shrugged. āItās not Hop, though. So, the search continues.ā He moved to sit back at the front.
āHey, Ms. Byers, you can disregard that. Itās a false alarm.ā
āIs your receiver in any way connected to the flux capacitor?ā she asked.
You blinked. āUh, sorry, Ms. Byers. I think I misheard you. What was that?ā
āThe flux capacitor. Robin and Jonathan said it was down but both of them and Will are working on it and I just wanted to make sure it wasnāt messing with your connection.ā
Steve and Dustin turned around at the same time, confused expressions on their faces.
You met their gaze with the same look of perplexity.
āHello?ā
Youād circled around the zone all night, calling it quits by the morning when Robin radioed, telling you three to get back to the Squawk.
You climbed out the van, Steve and Dustin behind you. You squinted, looking straight ahead at a car pulling up down the road.
Steveās shoulder brushed yours and you looked up at him.
His lips curved upward into that familiar warm smile.
You glanced away, though you smiled softly too.
He took that as a win.
It was embarrassing, really, how much his heart fluttered at the small interaction. But he didnāt care because it was about you. You made his heart flutter therefore it was far from embarrassing.
āIt looks like Robin sent out the Bat-Signal,ā Dustin said, joining you at your other side.
The car pulled up right in front of you, Nancy, Mike, and Lucas coming out. Mike and Lucas locked eyes on Dustin, walking up to him.
āHoly shit,ā Mike breathed out, eyeing Dustinās face.
Dustin looked up at Mike. āYep. Bike crash. Flew head first into a light post,ā he chuckled.
You and Steve looked at him with furrowed brows. He was lying. There was just no way in hell he crashed into a light post with the amount of damage done not only to his face, but his shirt, which unknown to you was torn earlier in the school day.
āLook, I'm sorry about missing the crawl, about everything,ā Dustin apologized.
āItās not your fault,ā Mike reassured him. āDonāt beat yourself up.ā
āYeah, it looks like he already did,ā Lucas chimed in. āIs that broken?ā
āI dunno,ā Dustin replied. Lucas lifted a finger towards his face and Dustin immediately flinched, backing away. āDonāt touch it.ā
āI wasnāt gonna- I wanted to-ā
āYou were going to.ā
āI just wanted to see if you have-ā
āHey! This isnāt a social call, kiddos!ā Robin called, from outside the door. āLetās go.ā
Just then, Jonathan came out, practically running up to Nancy and holding her close. āHey. Iām so sorry. Are you okay?ā
āYeah,ā Nancy breathed out, embracing him into a hug.
You shifted awkwardly watching them, and Steve did the same from beside you.
He glanced over at you, nothing but a desire to apologize for everything and get you back behind his eyes.
He was so sick of this. So sick and tired of having to act like he didnāt want to hold you, kiss you, hell just even talk to you. It was eating him alive and he wondered if you felt the same.
Truth be told, you did. You missed Steve. You wanted to fix things, even if it meant he just wanted to be friends.
You just wanted him back in your life.
You wanted him.
Everyone began heading inside, you and Steve the last to follow the group.
Inside, you all gathered around the coffee table.
You sat beside Dustin on the couch, your legs criss crossed.
Steve sat on the arm of the couch beside you, his arm draped over the back of the couch behind you and you had to fight the urge to lean into his touch.
Will was the only one standing up as he explained everything to you all.
Apparently, Henry was after not just Holly, but Derek Turnbow, which left you with more questions rather than reassurances.
āDerek?ā Steve asked. āDerek Turnbow. As in the Turnbow family? Like Turnbow Realty?ā
āThe one and only,ā Robin replied from her chair on the opposite end of the coffee table.
āWhole familyās a menace,ā Lucas commented.
āHow can you be sure?ā Nancy asked, looking at Will. āSure that Derekās the next target?ā
āBecause I saw,ā Will said, motioning a hand to himself. āIāve learned that when Iām close enough to the hive mind, I can tap into it, into Vecnaās mind,ā he explained, motioning his hands around. āI can see who heās targeting. The first time it happened, I saw through Hollyās eyes. The same day she was taken. And this morning, it happened again. Only this time, I wasnāt Holly. I was someone else. I was Derek Turnbow. Iām positive.ā
Steve shut his eyes and ran his hand down his face. āHold on. Iām a little lost.ā
āShocking,ā Dustin said.
āWere you seeing through the eyes of- of Vecna or of Derek?ā
āBoth,ā Will replied. āI- I was Vecna, but inside Derekās mind.ā
āVecnaās like a psychic serial killer,ā Robin said. āHe stalks his victims, but he does it by invading their minds. Thatās what he did with Chrissy and you,ā she said, nodding her head towards you.
āYeah, weāve established that,ā you agreed. āBut this seemsā¦I donāt knowā¦ā you trailed off. āWeird. Different almost.ā
āBecause it is,ā Nancy said. āWe did some digging at the hospital. It turns out that before he took Holly, Vecna stalked her, butā¦he didnāt appear as Vecna. He appeared as Henry. As a friend.ā
You blinked. āWait, what?ā
āWe think he was trying to earn her trust,ā Mike added. āNow, why he went through all that trouble, we donāt know. But I highly doubt his long term goal is friendship.ā
āWhatever it is,ā Will spoke up. āWhatever heās planning, we have to stop him. And we have to save Derek.ā
Your mind began to do what it did best.
Wander.
Why did Henry need Holly and Derek? And would he be after more kids? And where did he take Holly?
You were confused more than ever and you wanted answers, though you knew it would be a long while before you got even the slightest tid bit of information.
Will moved you all into the room with the projector and you gathered around to hear the plan he had created.
āThe Turnbows live here,ā he explained, pointing to the location with his stick. āWe wait in a van across the street. As soon as theyāre asleep, we move in, we grab Derek, and we take himā¦ā he moved over and pointed to a new location. āAnd we take him to here. The McCorkle farm. Itās completely isolated. Itās abandoned. The only thing is, we need to make sure he doesnāt see us or know where he is. So weāll need to blindfold him.ā
āWait, wait, wait. Hold on,ā Steve interrupted. āWhat?ā He ran his hands down his face again.
āSo that Vecna canāt find him,ā Robin explained.
āYeah,ā Jonathan scoffed, arms crossed. āAnd Mom, youāre okay with just kidnapping a child?ā
āYeah, no, no, no,ā she reasoned. āWeāre saving a child via kidnapping. And yeah itās fineā¦ā she faltered. āI think.ā She blinked. āYes. Nowās not the time to play it safe, Jonathan.ā
āIf I may,ā Dustin spoke up. āThough Iām not morally opposed to any of this, there are a few holes.
āYeah,ā Lucas agreed. āLike what if Derek falls asleep before the demogorgon attacks him?ā
āThatās one.ā
āOr what if Derek wakes up before we grab him, alerts his family?ā Nancy asked. āI mean, weāll go to jail.ā
āAnd not to mention Hollyās still missing,ā you added. āHopper and El are also MIA.ā You started to pace, running a hand through your hair. āItās a great plan, donāt get me wrong, but all this does is buy us and Derek a bit of time. I donāt see how this brings us any closer to finding Henry or Holly.ā You stopped pacing and leaned back against a nearby table.
āBecause it doesnāt,ā Dustin said.
āNot necessarily,ā Mike spoke up. āThere might be a way. A way to save Derek and find Holly.ā
Mike sat up, moving to the table, you all joining, and shuffling around his bag to grab his D&D game pieces. He lifted one up to show everyone. āThis is Derek.ā He placed down three more pieces. āAnd this is the rest of the Turnbow family. Weāre gonna need to recruit someone that the family trusts, someone that can gain access to the house.ā He moved another piece up. āThis person will knock the family out. Then weāll extract the family from the house.ā
You raised your brows.
You were used to doing the unethical if it meant saving the world, but this was insane. Knocking out a whole family and kidnapping their child was just diabolical work.
āKnock them out?ā Joyce asked.
āWell, safety,ā Mike said. āWith sleeping pills or something.ā
āI might know where we could get some benzos,ā Robin said. āThose things could knock an elephant on its ass.ā
āPerfect. That way if Vecna spies, heāll just assume Derek is fast asleep in bed. Heāll send his demos to grab him.ā He slammed the demogorgon piece down. āOnly he wonāt find Derek. Heāll find us. And weāll be ready. Weāll get Murray to supply us with the traps. Weāll burn the sucker, send him scampering home to its master, but not before we stick him with one of these.ā He pulled a telemetry tag from his pocket, placing it onto the table. āWeāll track the demo across the Upside Down in the Squawk van just like we did with Hopper. And if weāre lucky, the demo will lead us back to its lair. To Vecna. To Holly. Holes?ā
You smirked in amusement, giving him a nod of approval.
āWell done Byers and Wheeler,ā you said, smiling at both boys. āThere are zero holes in your revised version.ā
Will smiled at you, all giddy with excitement that he could finally be helpful.
A few hours later, Murray rolled in with a new supply drop while everyone went their separate ways to prepare for the night.
āOkay, so, I couldnāt get any ethanol, but I was able to scrounge up a gallon of acetone,ā Murray said, handing the bottle to Steve. āNow, be very careful. You smoke a Virginia Slim too close to this stuff, itāll catch on fire, okay?ā
He reached down and grabbed a small box. āSnare wire, various gauges.ā He handed Steve the box. āA creepy, child-sized CPR dummy. Itās purpose a mystery to me.ā He handed it to Jonathan. āShot gun shells, per our lovely ladyās request.ā Nancy accepted the small box. āThree twenty packs of water balloons. Purposely also a mystery. But I did take the liberty of selecting the grenade style as it felt thematically appropriate.ā He handed Joyce the pack of balloons. āDo keep those far away fromā¦ā he trailed off, grunting as he sat down to lift the top off of a wooden box. āThese three thousand feet of barbed wire.ā
He chuckled and shut the box, handing it to you. As soon as it landed in your arms, you staggered back slightly, not expecting the box to be nearly two hundred pounds.
Steve put the stuff in his hands on the ground, immediately coming over to you.
āHere, Iāve got it, baby,ā he said, the words rolling off of his tongue as if it were second nature.
Your eyes widened at the nickname, as he took the box from your hands, not sensing that he had said something wrong.
You looked at him with wide eyes and he blinked, clearly oblivious. āWhat?ā
Dustin gave Steve the craziest look you had ever seen, Jonathan and Nancy shared a glance while Joyce raised her brows.
āOkayā¦ā Murray trailed off. āI sense the sexual tension here has shifted.ā
Steve blinked, still confused by what happened. āHuh?ā
āAnyway,ā Murray went on, grabbing a small box. āSome sparkling new spark pigs for Bilbo Baggins.ā
You covered your face as you followed Nancy and Jonathan into the shed, embarrassment written all over your flushed face.
Dustin took the box from Murray. āSpark plugs thatās it?ā
āIām also giving out free hugs,ā Murray replied.
āYou didnāt get the turbo charger?ā
āNo.ā
āThe suspension kit?ā
āNo.ā
āThe aerodynamic spoiler?ā
āNo.ā
āIt wasnāt a goddamn Christmas list, Murray!ā
Murray jumped out of the truck, walking up to Dustin. āThatās exactly what it was. And the fact that Santa Murray scrounged all this up in a single afternoon and smuggled it into what is likely the most heavily secured location outside of the White House, Fort Knox, and Area 51, is a goddamn Christmas miracle. So, count your blessings, hang some mistletoe, pucker up, and kiss my jolly ass!ā
Murray walked away and Dustin looked down awkwardly. āThank youā¦for the spark plugsā¦ā
He went back inside to put the spark plugs away and headed out to the van where he found Steve throwing a bunch of stuff out of it.
āWhat are you doing?ā he asked.
āAre you gonna help me or just stand there?ā Steve asked.
āYeah, I'd rather not herniate a disc over a lost cause.ā
āYeah,ā Steve scoffed, reaching for the drill. āThatās the attitude.ā
āThis van once stalled out chugging up Picket Road, like it was the Little Engine That Couldnāt. Itās not fast enough to keep up with the demo, not without serious modifications,ā Dustin said, tapping the side of the van with his hand.
Steve used the drill to unscrew a few screws. āYeah, Henderson, what the hell do you think Iām doing?ā he asked, turning to face him. āModifying.ā He turned back around, grabbing a few things. āA lighter van is a faster van. āAnd if weāre just tracking, we donāt need half of the crap thatās in here.ā He tossed the things in his hands out. āSpeaking of, can you go to the front and empty the window washer fluid?ā
āOh the window washer fluid,ā Dustin said sarcastically, clapping his hands. āThatāll do it, good job, Steven.ā
āYou know, maybe we should go back to the agreement from yesterday,ā Steve suggested.
āWhat agreement?ā
āThe no talking agreement.ā Steve placed a finger over his lips. āShh.ā
āSo I guess that means you donāt wanna talk about how youāre pining over my sister like some bum ex?ā
Steve froze, slowly turning to face Dustin again. āWhat? Iām not pining.ā
Dustin raised his brows, clearly amused. āOh, let me take that for you, baby,ā he mocked, followed by a gag. āShe was totally embarrassed, dude.ā
Steve furrowed his brows. āWh-ā He cut himself off, realizing that he had in fact accidentally called you baby in front of everyone just moments ago. Steve cringed at himself, though he didnāt regret what he said. āJust shut up. No talking agreement. Remember?ā
Dustin rolled his eyes, turning to look over to Steveās Beamer.
A lightbulb popped up above his head.
He grabbed the drill and inspected it before screwing the end off.
Steve turned around and furrowed his brows. āWhat are you doing?ā Dustin ignored him. āHenderson, Iām using that.ā
Dustin swapped out the end for a new one, walking away with the drill.
āHey,ā Steve said in shock. āYou little shit!ā He climbed out of the van, following Dustin. āI said Iām using that, man.ā Dustin continued to walk away, more specifically, towards Steveās car. āWhat are you-ā Steveās words were cut off when Dustin jumped onto the hood of his Beamer. āYo! Hey! Get off the Beamer, man,ā he sighed like a disappointed parent. āGet off!ā
Dustin stood at the top of Steveās car, pointing a finger at him. āYou were right. For once.ā He knelt down onto his knees. āWe donāt need half the crap in there for our mission. In fact, the only thing we really need is a telemetry tracker, which I can affix to any vehicle.ā
Something almost dark twisted behind Steveās eyes. āHendersonā¦ā he warned. āDonāt you touch her.ā Dustin smiled, pressing the button on the drill, it buzzing to life. āHenderson!ā Dustinās smile only grew. āHenderson, Iām dead serious!ā
Dustin pulled his finger up to his lips. āNo talking.ā
āWait! Wait! Wait! Hey! Hey! What are you-ā
Steveās words fell on deaf ears as Dustin drilled a gaping hole into the top of his car.
āNo!ā Steve shouted. āWhat the-ā
And just like that, Steve lost his second baby.
Inside the shed, Nancy handed you a shotgun shell. You used a pair of pliers to begin taking the top off.
āSo, are we just not gonna talk about the fact that Steve totally called you baby back there?ā Jonathan asked cheekily.
āJonathan, stop,ā you grumbled, squeezing the pliers a little tighter than necessary.
āOh, baby let me get that for you,ā he mocked, his hand grabbing your shoulder.
Your face warmed up at the thought. Steve hadnāt even noticed what he had said, as if it just came from his mouth naturally. āJonathan!ā you scolded.
The boy smiled and nudged your shoulder. āI think you liked it.ā
Your eyes widened, the pliers and shotgun shell falling onto the table with a loud clang. āWhat?! No!ā
Nancy smirked. āWhyād you drop that then?ā
Your face was flushed a shade of pink, as you rolled your eyes and picked up the stuff again. You took off the top of the shell, dumping the pellets out. āGive me the transmitter.ā
Jonathan chuckled, handing you the tracker.
āWoah, woah, woah,ā Murray called, having just walked into the room. āChildren. Children.ā You didnāt even look up as you placed the transmitter into the shotgun shell. āWhat are we doing?ā
āWhat does it look like Iām doing?ā you asked, placing the top back onto the shell.
āWell, it looks like youāre loading my telemetry tracker into a shotgun shell, in what I presume are in the hopes of firing it into an interdimensional being,ā Murray said, leaning over the table and watching you in bewilderment.
You finally looked up at him. āWhen I asked you about my telemetry trackers, you said that they were high quality, meaning that theyāre designed to withstand harsh conditions.ā
āBlasting it out of a shotgun into some beast isnāt a harsh condition,ā Murray argued. āItās deadly. If the heat from the exploding gunpowder doesnāt destroy the transmitter, the force from the recoil will.ā
You hummed, tilting your head slightly. āInterestingā¦ā you trailed off. āIf my memory suits me well, which it always does, the military and aerospace industries actually use telemetry modules and microelectromechanical systems that are capable of withstanding the acceleration forces of a gun shot. So, please, explain to me how this is any different?ā
Murray blinked, caught off guard by what you had just said. āIā¦ā he trailed off, trying to figure out what to say. āWe arenāt the military or the aerospace industry.ā
āNo, we arenāt,ā you agreed. āBut you have me with all the same knowledge they have,ā you said with a smile. āShall we go prove that Iām right, which I always am.ā
Nancy smirked, grabbing her shotgun, Jonathan and Murray grabbing two sacks.
You followed Nancyās side, walking far enough away from the Squawk to not cause a scene, the boys walking behind you both talking each other's ears off, but not loud enough that you could make out what they were saying.
āHey!ā Nancy shouted, turning around. āWhatever you two are conspiring about back there, please do it later.ā
Murray chuckled. āOur apologies, milady.ā
āAnd hurry up. We donāt have all day,ā Nancy added.
You followed her lead again and as soon as you did, the two boys started speaking again.
āHey!ā Nancy scolded, stopping again. āIf you donāt shut up right now, Santa, I swear to God I will shoot this tracker into your potato sacks. And you know Iām a good enough shot to hit any mark, no matter how small.ā
āJesus,ā Murray breathed out, glancing over at Jonathan.
āNow set up my target.ā
āOkayā¦ā
Murray and Jonathan set the sacks down, moving over to the side as Nancy loaded her gun and aimed it at the sacks.
You joined Jonathanās side, not wanting to be too close to Nancy when she fired the gun.
āQuite large, actually,ā Murray said out of nowhere.
Jonathan looked over to you and seeing as you seemed to also be confused, he validated his own confusion.
āMyā¦potato sacks.ā
You scrunched your nose, crossing your arms over your chest and looking anywhere but Murray. āNo one asked, you know.ā
āSorry.ā
Nancy fired the gun and smirked with a confident hum. You walked over to the sack, pulling out the pocket knife from your jean pocket and smiled, pulling out a perfectly fine telemetry tag, flashing its red light.
āMight not have gotten into college, but Iām still a genius,ā you bragged, tossing the tag into the air and catching it with ease before walking back towards the Squawk.
Nancy smiled. āWell, would you look at that, Santa? Another miracle.ā
A miracle.
Youād need more than just one to wrap up this story.

Heroes Masterlist!
Main Masterlist!
āGood morning, Hawkins! This is the WSQK The Squawk!ā
A rubber chicken noise followed soon after, making you smile.
The small radio was turned on in your kitchen as you got ready to head out to study.
Life had been awfully strange the past year from looking for Henry nearly every other day to you graduating and becoming an adult.
Your grades were too bad your senior year to go straight to a four year and you missed the deadline to apply to junior college. You were currently working at the local diner to make some money and planned to apply to junior college next semester.
But as for now, you kept your mind sharp and distracted by studying whatever new material you could get your hands on.
āItās lookinā like a pretty regular day in Hawkins. Fifty five degrees, low chance of rain, medium chance of arrest, high chase of helicopters. But general banality aside, itās an exciting day for me, your friend, entertainer, and DJ, Robin Buckleyā¦Nice to meet you! ā¦AKA Rockinā Robin!ā
The song Rockinā Robin began to play and you smiled, reaching up into your cabinet for a glass. You walked over to your fridge, filling it with ice and water.
āAnd why is it a big day for me, you ask? Well, itās my five hundredth broadcast. Yeah, you heard that right, folks. Five-double-O!ā An applause ensued. āWhich means itās been even longer since youāve heard the sultry voice of Jimmy āFast Handsā Lee. But while Jimmy was fleeing Hawkins even faster than he moves those handsā¦āĀ
A scream followed Robinās words and your eyes widened as you untwisted the bag of bread. You blinked, caught off guard and placed a piece into the toaster.
āā¦Yours truly was watching slack-jawed as the earth split open beneath her feet and coughed up that tsunami of mysterious dandruff. And now, Iām stuck here with you, my fellow quarantine compatriots. And if I can be brutally honest, I couldnāt be happier. Because when you really think about it, why would you want to live anywhere else?ā
You smirked, tying the bag of bread off and putting it away. Robin spreading propaganda was not on your 1987 bingo card, yet here she was.
After Hawkins cracked open, the government had been trying their best to cover it up and keep public hysteria at a minimum. No one truly knew what was going on except for you and your friends, which sometimes felt more like a curse than a blessing.
Youād give anything to be a normal person who was oblivious to what was going on.
āI mean what town on earth can match our very impressive military to civilian ratio?ā The sound of a whistle filled your kitchen. āAnd those free mandatory medical checkups? I mean, very cool. āCause after we inhaled those springtime snowflakes, I mean, who knows whatās wrong with us? Maybe weāre fine, maybe not.ā You giggled when someone cued the coughing sound effect. āNo one really knows for sure. After all, this was a ānatural phenomenon never seen by manā,ā Robin quoted in a robotic voice.
Your toast popped and you reached into the cabinet for a plate and set the toast on it before grabbing a knife and adding your butter.
āA phenomenon now covered up by a giant metal band aid. Quite the eyesore, but hey, great for sledding. Though seriously, kids, stop sledding on the giant steel band aid. You are going to kill yourselves, and also, the men with guns, they donāt like it, not one bit.ā
You grabbed your plate and water, setting it at the table and taking a seat before biting into your breakfast.
āWhile weāre on the subject of things not to do, please steer clear of the Military Access Control Zone, aka the MAC-Z, or as I like to call it, the Big Mac. I have no idea whatās going on in there, but I have a gut feeling thereās a pretty good reason theyād like you to stay away. But hey, the rest of Hawkins is still there for you to enjoy. Someday soon theyāre gonna let us all out of here.ā A bell rang twice right as you got up to grab a napkin from the counter.
āIn the meantime, be thankful this is your home, study for that test, enjoy that T.V. dinner, and go on that date.ā
You sat back down at the table, your expression dropping slightly at the mention of a date.
āWhich, by the way, is exactly what yours truly is doing tonight. Thatās right, Rockinā Robin had a date, ladies and gentlemen!ā Robin giggled right as the rubber chicken squeaked again.
You couldnāt help but to smile. Robin and Vickie had gotten together and you couldnāt have been happier for her. You thought they were cute together and complemented one another well.
āAnd now, who is this lucky someone? Well, donāt be so nosy, kids. They know who they are. That is, if youāre listening, which I hope you are. Because this next one, itās for you, babe.ā
The song switched and you took another bite of your toast. Your morning was off to a great start, as it had seemingly been for the past year. That was until the radio started glitching.
You furrowed your brows, standing up and walking up to the kitchen counter. You grabbed the radio and hit it a few times, re-tuned it, and even turned it off and back on.
āWhat the hell,ā you muttered to yourself.
Something else was going on and it wasnāt your radio.
āWoah. Whatās going on? What the hell? What the hell?!ā Robin exclaimed, taking her headphones off and jolting up from her seat.
Back at The Squawk, they were experiencing some technical issues of their own.
Steve took his headphones off too, following Robin out of the booth. āI told you to stop thumbing your nose at the military,ā he lectured Robin.
āI was reiterating their goddamn rules, encouraging compliance,ā she argued.
āRight, there was no sarcasm there.ā
āYeah, said the dingus with the rubber chicken.ā
āThese are very serious people, Robin!ā
āShit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit!ā
Steve sighed, walking over to a small coffee table and snatching the walkie up, radioing the only person he knew could help. Wellā¦maybe not the only person who could help. He radioed the only person who would answer him. āHenderson, do you copy? Henderson?ā
āYeah, I copy,ā Dustinās voice came though, slightly annoyed. āGod, you sound swell. Let me take a wild guess. Youāre not calling to wish me a good morning.ā
āWell, no, itās not exactly a good morning,ā Steve replied. āWeāve got kind of a situation down here at the Squawk. The signal, its- its gone all wonky. I think Robin may have finally pissed them off.ā
āDoubtful. She was encouraging compliance.ā
āTold you!ā Robin shouted at Steve.
āThe remote radio headās the more likely culprit.ā
Steve blinked, the jargon unfamiliar to him. āThe remote what?ā he asked with furrowed brows.
āJust read the manual, Steve,ā Dustin sighed.
āCome on, man,ā Steve groaned. āThat thing might as well be in Greek.ā
āThen learn Greek!ā Dustin fired back. āI canāt always be there to solve your problems for you, Steve.ā
And with that, the line went dead.
āHenderson?ā Steve radioed. No one replied. āGod!ā Steve scoffed in annoyance. āLearn Greek,ā he repeated, turning around to Robin. āYou heard that tone. You heard that right?ā Steve tossed the walkie behind him, it landing on the couch.
āI swear to God, this stupid thing doesnāt exist,ā Robin groaned, shooting up from the drawer she was looking in.
āDid someone try Dustin again?ā Jonathan asked, glancing up from a pile of books.
āHe turned off his walkie,ā Robin replied, walking right past him.
āWhatās up with him lately?ā Nancy asked, crouched down and looking through a bottom shelf.
Electing not to ask you for help, for obvious reasons, Steve and Robin called up Jonathan and Nancy to help them find the manual. They had hoped that one of them would figure out what remote radio thing, or whatever the hell Dustin had said, was.
Steve was sitting at a table, sifting through some documents trying to find anything that could help. āDonāt even get me started,ā he huffed.
āYeah, please donāt,ā Robin practically begged.
Jonathan groaned, turning around to face the others. āWeāve been searching for nearly an hour now, are we sure this manual is real?ā
āI donāt know!ā Robin exclaimed, about five seconds away from ripping out her hair. āIāve never even seen the damn thing!ā she exclaimed, throwing her hand into the air.
Nancy sighed, standing up and putting her hands on her hips, feeling completely defeated by now. āCrazy idea, but uhā¦ā she trailed off, Steveās eyes slowly moving to look up at her, somehow knowing exactly where this was going. āBut why donāt we call the other genius?ā
Robin looked over to Steve who appeared to be frozen in place. āIt is her day offā¦ā she muttered. āSheās free.ā
Steveās jaw tensed. It wasnāt like you guys hadnāt seen each other in a year and a half, because you had due to the numerous crawls.
You justā¦never talked.
Not once did you speak to one another since that day you broke up.
āCanāt we just, like, keep looking?ā Steve asked. āOr try Dustin again or something.ā
āWeāve been looking for so long,ā Nancy reasoned. āAnd Dustinās walkie is off. I say we just call her up and get this sorted out instead of sitting here getting nothing done.ā
Steve groaned and threw his head down onto the table, his arms wrapped around his head. āIām gonna die.ā
āWell then at least you wonāt have to see her if youāre dead,ā Jonathan joked. Steve lifted his head up, his narrowed eyes peaking over his arms.
āIām just gonna call her,ā Robin said, leaving the room to call you.
You were tying your shoes on the edge of your bed when your phone rang. You reached over and picked it up. āHello?ā
āHey!ā
You immediately recognized the voice.
āWhatās up, Robs?ā
āSo uhā¦I donāt know if you were listening but thereās some bonkers stuff going on down here at the Squawk.ā
āOh yeah,ā you replied. āI heard it.ā
āRightā¦ā
āYup.ā
āExactly,ā she laughed awkwardly.
Your brows pressed together as you blinked. āWhy are you being so weird?ā
āOkay, listen,ā she began, and you could tell by her tone that she was about to spew out words a mile a minute. āWe need help, like serious help. We donāt know how to fix anything and we called your brother but heās no help and it got so bad we called Jonathan and Nancy. Yes, Jonathan and Nancy! We just need your little genius brain for, like, two seconds to fix the station and I swear, you donāt even have to speak to Harrington! Just please, please, please, get your ass down here!ā
Your body stiffened as you listened to her words. It was so painfully awkward to be around Steve, even for crawls. You had yet to be around him aside from a crawl so this would be the first.
Your fingers tugged at the telephone cord as you stared at the wall.
āHello?ā
āIām still here,ā you said softly, letting out a sigh after. āIāll be there in a few.ā
āThank you! Youāre a lifesaver!ā
Your car pulled up to the Squawk, and as soon as you took the keys out of the ignition, you shut your eyes.
That nasty argument you had with Steve haunted you.
When he called you out for ignoring your emotions, it felt like a giant spotlight was shining down on you, telling everyone that it was true.
Because it was.
Even after your breakup.
You loved Steve, more than anything, so it was hard moving on. You never really did move on because you started to ignore how you felt. You never processed anything.
You started to study more and pick up more hours at work. Whenever you had free time, you filled it with more work, more books, more chores. You were never not busy. You thought that if you kept your mind occupied, youād never have to think about that day, or that terrifying night.
You groaned, throwing your head back before you gathered up enough strength to get out of the car and walk inside. Your feet carried you through the doors and into the room outside of the station booth.
Steve and Robin were beside one another on the couch, Jonathan leaning back against the booth, and Nancy in a chair.
As soon as you walked into the room, Steve looked away, but his eyes couldnāt help but to drift back to you for half a second.
God, whyād your hair have to look so good and whyād your skin have to glow? And jeez, who let you out of the house in those jeans?
The room was filled with tension, everyone knowing what happened between you and Steve.
Robin was the first to know and it was only a matter of time before word got to Nancy and Jonathan.
And of course, because of Dustin, the rest of the kids knew about it too.
And then because of El, Hopper knew and because Hopper knew, that meant Joyce knew.
Which meant everyone who was involved in saving the world knew meaning every single time you all met up for a crawl, it was painfully awkward.
Including now.
You looked everywhere but at Steve, trying so hard to ignore the way his shirt fit his frame and the way his stupid hair framed his face.
āSo uh, what happened?ā you asked, trying as quick as possible to get to the bottom of the situation.
āRight!ā Robin exclaimed. āOur whole station went kablooey and itās all wonky now. We donāt know how to fix it.ā
You hummed in thought. āMy best guess is itās the remote radio head.ā
āFunny,ā Jonathan chuckled. āYour brother said the same thing.ā
āRight,ā Nancy nodded. āRemote radio head. What is it and where is it?ā
āItās the transceiver module on a cell tower. It basically converts and amplifies radio frequency signals,ā you explained and it made Steveās face heat up.
He loved hearing you talk about nerdy stuff he knew nothing about. He loved hearing the sound of your voice, even if you wanted nothing to do with him now.
āIt should be on the top of the radio tower outside,ā you said.
āAnd uhā¦whatās wrong with it, exactly?ā Robin asked.
You shrugged. āLoose wire?ā It was hard to tell from the ground, someone would need to go up and assess the issue.
The five of you walked outside, you and Steve standing as far away as possible from each other, as you all looked up at the tower.
āI donāt see it,ā Robin said.
āWell, itās up there somewhere,ā you stated. āKinda has to be or else none of this frequency stuff would be working.ā
āSo, I guess somebodyās gotta climb to the tippy top of this bad boy andā¦ā Robin trailed off, making a noise as if to mimic fixing something, moving her hands in a similar mannerism.
āWithout a harness or anything, it seems kind of dangerous,ā Nancy commented.
You nodded in agreement. āYeah, definitely. Pretty risky job.ā
āAka, job for good old Steve Harrington,ā Steve spoke, looking up at the tower.
āNo third person, please,ā Robin cringed.
You furrowed your brows, glancing over at Steve who was already looking at you. He averted his gaze quickly and walked away.
Jonathan caught on before anyone else. Steve was silently looking for your approval.
Which only meant one thing.
Jonathan was about to mess with him.
āAlright,ā Jonathan said, walking beside Steve and looking up at the tower with him. āI, uhā¦I actually think this might be a better job for Jonathan Byers,ā he said, taking his coat off. āIām, like, one quarter monkey, dude.ā
Steve took his coat off, placing a firm hand on Jonathanās chest. āIāve got this, Byers. Donāt sweat it.ā He tossed his coat aside, Robin catching it against her chest, and headed straight for the tower.
You rolled your eyes. āIdiot,ā you muttered.
āWhat?ā Robin asked, turning to you.
āVoltage.ā
While a part of you hated Steve, the other part of you that still loved him somewhere didnāt want to find him dead.
āRight,ā she realized. āUh, voltage!ā she called after Steve, making him stop in his tracks. āUnless you wanna fry,ā she said, holding her hands up.
āYeah, I know,ā he said, turning to walk towards the door. āIām not an idiot,ā he added, looking over his shoulder and glancing at you for some sort of approval. You instead had your arms crossed and rolled your eyes, which heād be lying if he said he wasnāt slightly embarrassed.
He opened the door and walked inside to turn the voltage off. He turned the dial all the way down to zero and by the time he walked out, Jonathan was already climbing the ladder.
āWoah, dude, what are you doing?ā
Jonathan stopped on the ladder and turned around. āI got this, dude,ā he said, mocking Steveās word choice. āDonāt sweat it.ā Jonathan flashed him a teasing smile, climbing up the ladder.
Steve looked over to you and you had your brows furrowed as you watched Jonathan climb up.
Steve looked back up at Jonathan. āSon of aā¦ā he muttered to himself before immediately taking off and bolting to the tower. He climbed up the ladder moving as fast as he could trying to pass Jonathan who was a few steps ahead.
You blinked, turning around with a sigh as soon as you saw Steve. āWhat the hell is he doing, Jonathan literally said he had it.ā
āTrying to win you back?ā Robin suggested with a shrug, resulting in you cringing.
The sound of a vehicle pulling up made you turn your head, and when you did, you saw a very familiar cemitruck.
āI thought grocery delivery wasnāt until tomorrow?ā Robin asked.
āMe too,ā Nancy sighed, staring at the truck.
Meanwhile, back at the radio tower, Steve and Jonathan climbed as fast as they could to the top. Once there, they both looked down, realizing how far up they truly were.
Jonathan quickly turned around, spotting the issue. He crouched down, screwing two loose cords back together. He stood up straight again, looking at the box. It still wasnāt on.
Steve hit it with the back of his hand once, the box wiring back to life. He shrugged when Jonathan glanced over at him. Never fails.
Jonathan narrowed his eyes at him. āUh huh.ā
They both bolted over to the edge, shouting āI fixed it!ā when they realized that none of you girls were standing where you once were.
Meaning you werenāt there and gave no shits.
āDamn it,ā Steve muttered under his breath.
You, Nancy, and Robin stood outside the truck as Murray opened the back. āAlright,ā he sighed, climbing inside. āSantaās brought a full sack today.ā He grabbed a few bags, moving them to the front before climbing out. āA fresh telemetry tag,ā he said, handing you the box. āScarcer than henās teeth, these things.ā
You looked down at the box, subconsciously looking away to see if someone was back yet.
Murray turned around, grabbing two metal boxes by their handles and handing them to Nancy. āEnough bullets and shells for Hop to start a small war, if he should so choose.ā He reached into a box, grabbing a lettuce head and flashing it at you. āAnyone order a salad?ā He turned around again and grabbed a grenade, a cheeky smile on his face. āGrenade salad?ā
Your face scrunched at his joke and it didnāt go unnoticed by him.
āI hid the grenades under the, uh, lettuce,ā he explained, his bubbly tone dropping.
You nodded, brows raised. āThatās nice, Murray.ā
āOkay,ā he muttered before turning back into the truck to show you more goods. āGatorade for Elās battery,ā he said, picking up a bottle and holding it up to you.
Footsteps began to fill your ears and you turned your head to find Jonathan and Steve jogging back. āSomeone say Gatorade?ā Jonathan asked.
āLet me get one of those,ā Steve panted, clearly out of breath from climbing to the top of the radio tower and back down again.
āSure,ā Murray said, tossing him the bottle. āBut I donāt think itās gonna go too well withā¦ā he trailed off, reaching into his bag. āPeatnut butter-ā
āBoppers!ā Steve exclaimed like a kid in a candy store. āGod, I missed these things,ā he said, right as Murray tossed him the box.
The corner of your lips tugged upward slightly as you watched Steve.
God, whyād he have to be so cute even after you broke up?
Robin glanced over at you and her expression softened. She loved you and Steve both, so it was weird for her being around the two of you after you broke up. She was silently praying for the day you two would just get back together, but she was beginning to lose hope as it had already been over a year by now.
āThanks,ā Steve thanked him, tucking the box under his arm and screwing the cap back onto his drink.
āDonāt worry, Mr. Byers,ā Murray went on, making Jonathan look up to him. āI got you a present too.ā He reached into his pocket and pulled out a cassette tape. āI know youāre allergic to jazz, but just give it a whirl,ā he said, drawing a small circle in the air with the tape. āI think youāll find it quite engaging.ā Not only was there too much emphasis on the last word, Murray winked at Jonathan.
You were onto himā¦
Jonathan snatched the tape, looking over to you. You raised a brow and he cleared his throat, looking back down at the tape in his hand.
Nancy slowly turned to Jonathan, but before she could give him a look that could even slightly inform him as to what she was thinking, Murray bopped her on the head with an envelope. āAnd for the station manager, the reason for my premature delivery,ā he said, handing it to her.
Nancy took the envelope, sighing before opening it and pulling the papers out. You peaked over her shoulder, eyes scanning over the documents.
But you werenāt the only one who wanted a peak.
Steve stood behind you, looking over your shoulder too.
You stiffened, consumed by his body heat and frame that was nearly touching your back.
āA burn?ā Nancy asked. āTonight? But thatās-ā
āToo soo, I know,ā Murray interrupted. āWhatever theyāre doing in the Upside Down evidently needs a serious injection of resources.
Nancy flipped to the next page and Robinās eyes widened. āThatās a lot of cargo.ā
āI figure a supply drop this big takes two hours, minimum.ā
āWhich gives Hopper plenty of time for a crawl,ā Nancy concluded.
āMaybe tonightās the night we finally find that bastard and end this.ā
Something behind your eyes changed.
Hope.
After all of the crawls you had been through, you had a good feeling about this one. You were hopeful that tonight would be the night.
āHey, let me see that,ā Steve said from behind you. His arm brushed yours, his chest pressing into your back as he reached for the documents in Nancyās hand.
Jonathan watched with raised brows as you stiffened, your eyes going wide at the contact.
Nancy blinked, caught off guard, while Robin smirked, knowing damn well Steve did that on purpose.
Nancy handed him the documents, and he thanked her, his knuckles brushing your arm, creating a line of goosebumps along your skin.
He glanced down at you and smirked, watching as your face went a shade of pink and your eyes blinked rapidly.
He didnāt even look at the documents. He was looking at you.
āHey there, friends, this is Rockinā Robin! Sorry about the abrupt departure. I hope you survived without me. We had some annoying technical difficulties.ā
You watched as Steve queued up a glass shattering sound effect followed by crying.
You all regrouped in the booth, Robin hopping back onto the radio to alert the others using code words about another crawl.
āBut to make it up to you, we have a very special treat thatās sure to turn your day upside downā¦ā
The song Upside Down began to play, and your heart couldnāt help but to race in anticipation as it did leading up to every crawl. The adrenaline of knowing that you were sending Hopper down there and that he could potentially find Henry was not only exhilarating, it was nerve wrecking.
āNow, before you start bumping, hereās a few fun facts about the Boss. She was born Diane in the North End of Detroit. Berry Gordy, thatās Gordy with a G, signed her to Motown in 1961. And one is the key number, because between 1964 and ā67, the Supremes had ten songs hit the top of the charts. Thatās right, ten. Then in ā78, she tried to make it big in the movies with The Wiz, which was a colossal flop-a-roonie. But, in my personal opinion, I still dig it. I mean. Michael Jackson as a scarecrow? Give it a chance. But make sure you bring your super-sized popcorn, because this movie has a run time of over two hours. Alright, class dismissed. I hope you were taking notes. There will be a test later. Take it away Diane.ā
Robin turned the music up, taking her headphones off and shutting off her mic. The five of you left the room, walking down the hallway to a shelf. Nancy moved a box out of the way and undid the lock before sliding the shelf away, all of you following her down the stairs. Steve was the last one in, moving the shelf back over and putting the box over the hole.
You all followed Nancy to the projector. You pulled a chair out, kicking your legs up onto the table. Robin grabbed a chair and pulled it up, sitting right beside you.
And of course, Steve pulled a chair up beside you, putting his legs on top of the table too.
His knee brushed yours and he gazed over at you. You could feel his eyes on yours. He wasnāt pulling his leg away.
You moved your leg away from his, crossing it over your other one.
Jonathan stood near the projector with his arms crossed.
āAlright,ā Nancy began, walking up to where the visual was projected. āSo, assuming Murrayās intel is correct, the supply convoy is set to reach Hawkins at 10:00 sharp. Meaning, I want Hopper in the tunnels en route to the MAC-Z no later than 9:00,ā she explained, using a stick to point to a location on the map.
āBarring unusual traffic, I expect the convoy to reach the MAC-Z at 10:15. And now the crawl begins. Hop is now in the Upside Down, traveling at what I hope to be a gentle thirty miles an hour, which will allow Dustin and Steve to follow along in the Rightside Up.ā Her stick moved slowly down the street on the map.
āI expect the convoy to take the same route as last month. Main to Cornwallis, one turn. But if you guys hit any red lights-ā
āIāll blow right through,ā Steve interrupted.
Nancy whipped her head around. āOnly if thereās no MPs around,ā she said, pointing her stick at Steve and earning a scoff from him. āRemember, if you guys get pulled over, we lose Hop, weāre toast.ā
Steve put his hands up. āI got it.ā
Nancy turned back around, pointing with her stick and moving it up. āYou two are going to move up Cornwallis for roughly six miles. And as the convoy reaches this Shell station here, we radio Hop to disembark.ā She pulled her stick away, walking away from the screen. āWhich will drop him at the border of G1, where heāll have two whole hours to search for Vecna, which is ample time,ā she said confidently. āHeās cleared zones much faster. So, all in all, signs point to another successful crawl,ā she said with a smile, turning around to face all of you.
Steve shifted, moving to sit on the edge of the table with his arms, feet resting in the chair he was in.
Jonathan stood still and cleared his throat while Robin glanced at Steve then back to Nancy.
āIs there a problem?ā Nancy asked.
āUmmā¦ā Jonathan trailed off, looking down at his shoes. āNo. No, I mean, I think itās good,ā he nodded, shrugging his shoulders.
āYeah,ā Steve agreed. āYeah, itās good. Itās really good. Itās just uhmā¦ā
āZone G1 is not that exciting or Vecna-y,ā Robin interjected. āI mean, what does it have? A Circuit City, a couple of houses, and a Big Buy?ā she asked. āWhat are the chances Vecnaās hiding there?ā
You shook your head. āDoesnāt matter,ā you finally spoke up, everyone now turning their attention to you. āWe keep searching each zone until we find him.ā
āI agree,ā Nancy said. āWe stick to the plan. We get into the Upside Down the only way we can, through the MAC-Z gate under the cover of a burn.ā
āUnlessā¦ā Steve trailed off. āHeās already dead.ā
You scoffed, now finally looking at him. He looked over at you and faltered for a moment. āI mean, your plan is great,ā he said, turning to Nancy. āItās justā¦this is crawl what? Are we in the thirties now? And not a single baddie in sight.ā
You rolled your eyes, crossing your arms over your chest.
Nancy was growing annoyed too, pulling her lips into a tight line.
āEl canāt find him in her bath, Will hasnāt had his goosies since the shake ānā quake, andā¦ā he trailed off, clearing his throat. āHenderson hasnāt had a vision for who knows how long.ā
You glanced down at your shoes.
The man you loved now only called you by your last name.
You had done it too, referring to him as Harrington instead of Steve. It still hurt though, experiencing your relationship change into whatever awkward hell it had become.
āGoosies?ā Jonathan asked, oblivious to anything else that came out of Steveās mouth.
āAnd last you two saw Vecna,ā Steve went on, motioning a hand between Nancy and Robin. āHe was roasting like a turkey and pumped full of lead. And that was before he fell three full stories. So, you ever think that, I donāt know, weāre scouring a battlefield that we already, like, won?ā
āHave you forgotten what he showed Nancy?ā Jonathan asked. āHawkins on fire. Karen, Holly, everyone dead. Not to mention, what sheās seen?ā he went on, nodding to you. āApparently weāre all supposed to die, and so far only three have.ā
āYeah, man,ā Steve replied. āHe also showed her her mother walking around like she didnāt die years ago. Thatās what he does, he gets in your head and tries to scare you.ā
āYeah, well he did a good job because I am scared,ā Nancy said. āAnd you should be scared too. Because if heās still out there, heās planning to end our world, so-ā
āWe donāt stop looking,ā you said. āIt doesnāt matter how many crawls it takes, we donāt stop until we find him and know for sure that heās dead and never coming back.ā
Nancy nodded affirmatively. āExactly.ā
Steve glanced over at you for a moment. He wondered if you had listened to him and confronted your emotions, which was a dumb thing to wonder. You hadnāt. You were just too stubborn.
He knew how much youād been keeping yourself busy, thanks to Robinās intel, which wasnāt a good sign.
He wanted nothing more but to save you.
But as he had said that day you broke up, he couldnāt save someone who didnāt want to be saved.
āIt was this weird feeling. Like something I really havenāt felt before. Mike thinks it could mean that maybe Vecnaās close, that heās finally re-emerged. And if he has, maybe weāll find him tonight.ā
Willās words went in one ear and out the other. You stared down at the hospital bed, not looking at the person in it, but the bed frame.
It had become routine to finally start seeing Max with Lucas. Sometimes the other kids would join, and today that person was Will. Regardless, every time you went to see Max, you completely dissociated. You zoned out, never really talking. Never really feeling.
Will turned to you, watching as your eyes remained locked onto the bedframe. He said your name. āWhat do you think?ā
You blinked, sitting up straight. āSorry. What?ā
āAbout us finding Vecna tonight,ā he said.
āOhā¦ā you trailed off. āYeah. Weāll find him.ā
Lucas let out a sigh nodding his head. āI think so too. I think weāll find him this time for sure.ā
The room fell quiet again with only the soft beeps of the machine. You tugged nervously at the necklace around your neck, eyes drifting back down again.
āYou wanna play the tape?ā Will asked Lucas. āIām just- Iām just gonna go grab a Coke or something caffeinated because itās gonna be a long night,ā he said, standing up. Will tapped your shoulder with the back of his hand. āYou wanna come?ā
You jumped slightly, looking up at him. He had a soft smile, something reassuring behind his eyes. āYeah, sure.ā
He nodded over to Lucas. āYou want one?ā
āNo,ā he said, shaking his head. āIām good. Thanks.ā
You pushed your chair back, standing up. Will walked out of the room first, holding the door open for you to which you thanked him. As soon as you were out of the room, it was like you could breathe again.
āYou alright?ā Will asked, walking shoulder to shoulder down the hallway to the vending machine.
āYeah,ā you breathed out. āJustā¦kinda feels suffocating being in there.ā
Willās expression softened. āYeah, I get it. But Iām proud of you.ā
You furrowed your brows, looking over to him. āYou are?ā
He nodded with a smile. āYeah. I mean, youāre here and thatās progress. It means youāre healing.ā
While you continued to ignore how you felt, you were making slow progress. It was stagnant though. You just showed up because it felt obligatory and you stayed silent the entire time, completely zoned out pretending you were anywhere but there.
Was that progress? Or was it taking two steps back?
You started to do the same thing whenever you went to see Billy and Eddie. You stopped talking to them and dissociated.
You swallowed hard, stopping at the vending machine. āDoesnāt really feel like it,ā you admitted. Will reached into his pocket for some cash and looked over to you.
āWhat do you mean?ā he asked.
You shrugged, letting out a sigh. āI just zone out and pretend Iām not even there. Every time Iām here Iām not present. Iām somewhere lost in my own mind.ā
Will pulled out a crumbled dollar bill and flattened it. āYou used to never be able to walk near this building. I think you being here is great progress.ā
You smiled softly. Will struggled for a long time with Eddieās death. He was the first person in his life to get through to him and make him realize that he was perfectly fine just the way he was. Will faced his emotions, coming to terms with what was and eventually reaching a place where he could talk about what happened without breaking down.
Same with Robin.
They had both fully healed whereas your wound was seemingly still fresh.
Will put his dollar into the machine and two Cokes fell out. He handed you one with a smile.
āWill, I was gonna buy my own,ā you said.
He laughed, rolling his eyes. āPlease, itās like one cent, itās fine.ā
āThanks,ā you smiled, accepting the soda.
He nodded, cracking open his and taking a sip. He hummed. āIsnāt this new Coke so much better than old Coke?ā
āI honestly canāt taste a difference,ā you giggled, the debate one in which you didnāt necessarily understand.
āWhat?!ā Will exclaimed. āThis tastes a million times better!ā
You laughed. āIf you say so.ā You handed him your drink. āCan you hold this a sec? Iām gonna run to the restroom really fast.ā
āSure,ā he said, taking your drink into his hand.
āThanks, William,ā you teased before turning on your heel and walking down the hallway.
āHey! I said stop calling me that!ā he called after you. He sighed and shook his head. āWilliam,ā he repeated, under his breath. He looked up, something, or rather someone catching his attention. āRobin!ā Will called, trying to grab the girlās attention by waving his hand. āRockinā Robin!ā
She didnāt hear him, turning the corner.Ā
He followed her.
āDustin, youāre an hour late, man. Youāre making us nervous. We need you here at the Squawk.ā Lucas paced back and forth, trying to get ahold of Dustin through the walkie. No one had seen him since after school and everyone was growing increasingly worried.
āDustin, if you can hear us, please respond. Over,ā Lucas tried again.
Just then, you walked out of the Sqwawk, coming outside to meet with the others. āI just got off the phone with my mom. She hasnāt seen him either.ā
āChrist, Henderson,ā Steve muttered under his breath.
āHeāll show. He always shows,ā Will reassured everyone.
Steve checked his watch and Robin shoved her hands into her pockets. You let out a half annoyed, half worried sigh as you bit the inside of your cheek.
āTry him again,ā Steve told Lucas.
āCome in Dustin. Are you there? Earth to Dustin. This is serious, man. Quit playing. We canāt wait around. Get your ass to the Squawk. We canāt wait around. We need you here now. This is not funny. Are you there? Dustin, is everything okay? Dustin!ā
You began to pace back and forth, nerves coursing through your veins so much so that you could feel it in your fingers.
Surely, he was fineā¦right?
You had grown more protective over him the past year, worried that something else would happen. He understood why you had become the why you were, but he hated how much you hovered over him.
And now the one time you let him do his own thing without telling you what he was doing, he was nowhere to be seen.
You halted abruptly, seeing none other than El, Joyce, and Hopper in the distance.
El made eye contact with Mike and came running up and hugging him.
You walked towards Hopper and Joyce, one thing on the forefront of your mind.
āHopper,ā you said.
āNo.ā
You blinked, throwing your hands up and joining him by his side. āYou didnāt even let me finish!ā
āBecause I know that look and the answer is no,ā he fired back immediately, keeping his pace as he walked up to the Squawk.
āHopper!ā
āNo.ā
āJust-ā
āNo.ā
You walked faster, standing in front of him and stopping, causing him to stop too. Your arms were crossed over your chest as he let out a sigh, throwing his head back.
Joyce raised her brows, deciding to go meet Will knowing this was likely to escalate.
āLet me go with you,ā you practically demanded.
Youād asked almost every other crawl to go with him and he said no every single time. Sometimes he wished he wouldāve died back in that Russian base because you were probably one of the most annoying kids he had met.
Second to Mike, of course.
You were relieved to find out that he was alive, but as soon as the crawls started and everyone had their own parts to play, you started pestering him.
No one thought you were in the right frame of mind to do just about anything. You had built the telemetry tracker with Dustin and after that, you were virtually useless.
You just waited at the Squawk and listened in to what was going on. You begged for something, anything to do, but they never would let you. They knew how angry you were and were terrified that youād do something reckless.
Which, if presented the chance, you probably would.
Hopper ran a hand down his face. āI told you once before that the answer was no. The answer today is still the same.ā
He took a step to the side to walk around you and you moved with him, blocking his path. āHopper, Iām the one who caused all of this. I should be the one to put an end to it.ā
Hopperās expression softened. While you seemed fine on the outside, you were clearly still hurting somewhere on the inside.
Hopper placed a hand on your shoulder. āLook, youāre a great kid,ā he said earnestly. āYouāre so smart and you treat everyone who walks into your life like family. But you canāt come with me. Okay?ā You huffed, jaw clenching as you looked away from him. āIf something were to happen to you while we were down there, Iād never be able to live with myself.ā
āI canāt either,ā you whispered, shaking your head. āYou think I can live with myself knowing what happened? Billyā¦Maxā¦Eddieā¦ā you trailed off, voice cracking with each name. āI have to find him, Hopper. I have to be the one to kill him.ā
Something in Hopperās face shifted. He was so shocked to hear you say the word ākillā. Not āput an end toā or āstopā. But kill.
You wanted to kill Henry.
Hopperās hand was still on your shoulder as he crouched down slightly to meet your height. āCan I ask you something?ā You furrowed your brows but nodded anyway. āIf and when the time comes and youāre the one whoās supposed to kill your father, will you do it?ā
Your heart pulsed as the word āfatherā. Not Henry. Not One. Not Vecna.
Because somewhere underneath the monstrous mask was a man.
Your father.
You shifted uncomfortably, looking away from Hopper.
āJust think about it, kid,ā he said, standing up straight and walking back to the Squawk.
You stood there for a moment, Hopperās words replaying in your head.
If and when the time comes and youāre the one whoās supposed to kill your father, will you do it?
Was it truly in your nature to kill someone, let alone your own estranged father?
Inside the Squawk, you all helped Hopper load up and prepare for the crawl.
You ensured that the telemetry tracker was good to go before handing it to him. He thanked you and you nodded, still avoiding eye contact.
You were clearly still upset from earlier and truth be told, despite how annoying you were, he cared about you and felt bad.
He ruffled your hair and scrunched your nose with a small smile.
And that small reaction was enough for him.
He smiled and held up the tag as he walked away. āTagās active,ā he told Robin.
āCopy,ā she replied, sitting at the desk and radioing Steve. āHarrington, you getting any signal? Tag is active.ā
āYeah, just give me a second,ā he radioed back.
You moved over to the table with the rest of the kids, leaning back on it as you waited. A few seconds later, Steveās voice cut through the silence.
āHey, anybody know how Hendersonās wheelie thing works?ā
āThereās a small switch under the wheel,ā you explained. āItās the safety lock.ā
Robin nodded. āThere should be a safety lock under the wheel.ā
āOkay, getting a signal. Itās pretty quiet thoughā¦ā he trailed off and it was quiet for a moment. āOkay signalās holding a steady 90 dB. But how exactly am I supposed to monitor this and drive without Henderson?ā
āUh, hear anything from Inspector Gadget?ā Hopper asked.
āNothing,ā Mike replied, tugging his backpack over his shoulder, ready to go.
Willās eyes lit up. āI can do it,ā he spoke up. āIā¦I can monitor.ā
āNo. Youāre staying here,ā Joyce said almost immediately.
āNo, Mom,ā Will reasoned. āI helped her and Dustin set up the antenna,ā he explained, motioning a hand to you. āI know how to work it.ā
āOut of the question,ā Joyce replied. She turned to you. āYou built it. You know how to work it, right?ā
You didnāt even have a chance to respond before Will spoke up again.
āYou know she doesnāt wanna be in there with Steve,ā he reasoned, growing more annoyed by the second.
You shifted awkwardly. He wasnāt wrong. You didnāt want to be in there with Steve.
Joyce said your name, making you look up at her. āCan you justā¦ā she trailed off, an apologetic look on her face. āPlease?ā
You glanced over at Will and he was silently pleading for you to tell her no. To tell her to let him do it.
But it wasnāt your place.
You let out a shaky sigh, mentally preparing to spend the night with Steve in the confined space that was the stupid Squawk van. āI can do it.ā
We're officially back in business!
It's time to vote!
Remember, all decisions will impact the story!
It will strengthen certain friendship dynamics, relationship dynamics, and even shape you, the reader!
All actions will have consequences, whether that be positive, negative, or both. In some chapters, there will be hints at what might occur if you chose to go down a certain route, so pay close attention!
Choose wisely!
Also, for all polls, the choices that don't win will be featured in a non-cannon, 'What If...? chapter, where I'II briefly explain what impact that decision would've made on the story.
When the time comes, will you be willing to kill Henry?
Uh, yes tf??
No!
I donāt know yetā¦
Remaining time: 4 days 8 hours

Dear Billy,
I just wanted to say that I appreciate you.
Itās kind of weird though because one moment youāre bashing my head into the wall, knocking out my best friend and the guy that would later be my boyfriend (that I think you secretly hate), and the next minute Iām sneaking into your window late every night and having conversations Iād never dare to have with anyone else.
Funny how life works, isnāt it?
I honestly hated your guts when you first showed up to Hawkins. I thought you were insufferable, an asshole even.
But then that night at the mall when it seemed all hope was lost, I saw you. The real you.
And Iām glad I did because Iāll forever cherish those nights spent together. It was nice to have someone in my life who truly understood me. All of me. You were the one person I could go to who just got me. You never tried to fix anything, you just listened and asked me questions that made me think about myself and I appreciate you more than anything.
Never in a million years did I think Iād say this, but youāre surprisingly a good person.
Iāve never seen someone who actually wanted to change and did it. Itās kind of inspirational in a way. Youāre a reminder that itās never too late to change no matter how dark your past may be.
So, keep going. Keep fighting to be the person you want to become and your life will only be up from there.
Of Course Sheās My Girlfriend! | Steve Harrington x Fem!Reader

A/N: If youāre a reader of Heroes, take this as my formal apology for chapter 30 and 31 :)

Whether you and Steve Harrington were touchy best friends who seemingly had magnets that drew you into one another, or simply just a couple, was a mystery to which no one had a definitive answer to.
It was no secret that you two were best friends for the past couple of years. You both met in middle school and ever since you were put in the same science class, you two were inseparable.
Your playful shoves and harsh pillow fights that left you with a headache for days slowly matured into something more intimate as you both grew up.
Your fingers would brush, your knees would touch, youād tangle your legs with his.
No one questioned it at first. Not until you and your friends were hanging out at the Wheelerās place during a movie night.
The kids had taken the floor and you older teens were spread out along the couch. Robin tucked away in the corner with her knees pulled to her chest, Nancy sitting beside her with her legs crossed, Jonathan to her left with his arms crossed, and Eddie sitting next to him, his head drooping back every now and then as he slowly fell asleep.
And of course, there was you and Steve on the other side of the couch.
Your back was pressed against the arm of the couch, legs draped over Steveās. But that wasnāt the issue. The issue was that his fingers were gently grazing up and down your thigh.
Dustin was lying on his stomach and glanced over his shoulder. The poor kid had to do a double take to ensure his eyes werenāt deceiving him.
And surely enough they werenāt.
One of Steveās hands was on your knee while the other was caressing the soft skin exposed at your thigh.
You yawned, leaning to rest your head onto his shoulder. Steve smiled at you and snuggled his nose into the crook of your neck.
Dustinās eyes widened.
Since when were you and Steve a thing?
And thatās the question that made him think for days on end.
He couldnāt go fifteen minutes without his mind wandering back to the idea of you and Steve being a thing. Everyone knew you two were close, but close enough that he was touching your thigh and rubbing his nose along your neck?
What the fuck kind of friendship was that?
Dustin thought maybe thatās the kind of friendship you two had established.
But the more he thought about it, the more he realized that he would never be caught dead doing such a thing with one of his friends.
Then againā¦you and Steve had always been touchy.
Dustin couldnāt take the spiraling questions in his own head anymore. He needed answers and he needed them fast.
He rounded up the party at his house one late afternoon and paced his living room.
āDoes anyone think their relationship is kinda weird?ā he asked, walking back and forth, hands on his hips.
Mikeās eyes followed Dustin. āI mean, theyāve always been touchy,ā he said. āThis isnāt some insane revelation.ā
Dustin halted in his tracks. āThatās what I thought, but the other day when we had a movie night, she was pretty much sitting on top of him and he was, like, touching all up on her and rubbing his nose against her neck,ā he explained, cringing at each and every word. The vision was forever ingrained into his mind and he wished for a way to delete it.
āThatās disgusting,ā Will gagged, scrunching his nose.
āWell, what if theyāre dating?ā Lucas suggested.
āThatās what I was thinking too,ā Dustin replied.
El furrowed her brows, looking between the group. āI do not follow. Wouldnāt they tell us they are boyfriend and girlfriend?ā
āI mean, I guess,ā Lucas shrugged. āUnless they wanted to keep it a secret.ā
āBut why?ā El asked.
āWho knows,ā Max grumbled, leaning back onto the couch. āCanāt we go to the arcade or something?ā She was growing increasingly bored by the second. She didnāt really care what you and Steve were. In her mind, it was none of her business.
Dustinās eyes lit up. āHoly shit,ā he breathed out. āTheyāre hanging out today! We could go spy on them!ā
āAnd see if theyāre a thing!ā Lucas exclaimed.
Max blinked, standing up. āWoah, woah, woah,ā she said, closing her eyes and shaking her head. When she opened them again, Lucas was standing too. āWeāre not gonna go spy on them!ā
āI think Steve mentioned something about the movies,ā Dustin explained, already moving to grab his shoes from beside the door.
āUh, hello?!ā Max shouted. āWeāre not spying on them!ā
Mike stood up, checking his watch. āWait, what time is the showing? We should be there before they show up.ā
Lucas snapped his fingers. āSmart.ā
āAre you all deaf?!ā Max yelled.
āSix oāclock showing,ā Dustin said, tying his laces. āWe can make it if we leave now.ā
Dustin shot up, him and Mike already walking out the front door. Lucas went to leave too, looking over his shoulder from the doorway to see Max standing in the living room with a look of bewilderment. āMax, come on!ā he said before walking out the door.
Maxās hand landed on her face before turning to face El and Will who were still sitting on the couch with wide eyes. āI hate boys,ā Max sighed.
āHey!ā Will scoffed.
āYou donāt count.ā
āā“ļøĖļ½”ā
The kids claimed their spots towards the front of the theater, assuming that you and Steve wouldnāt want to sit too close to the screen.
A few minutes had gone by before you and Steve walked in.
Dustin sank into his seat, pulling his cap further down his face in an attempt to cover it. āIāve got eyes on our targets,ā he whispered.
One of Steveās hands rested against your lower back, the other holding a bucket of popcorn. You were rambling about something and Steve was nodding his head, a small smile on his lips.
āWow, theyāre totally dating, hooray,ā Max mused sarcastically. āCan we leave now?ā
Dustin turned around, looking over the seats watching as you and Steve sat beside each other. āNot yet. We donāt have solid evidence.ā
Will rolled his eyes. āSo youāre just gonna sit there looking over the seats like a complete weirdo for the entire movie?ā
āYes.ā
El raised a brow. āThat is creepy.ā
Lucas and Mike peaked over their shoulders. You wrapped your arm around Steveās looking up at him with eyes that twinkled as if he had given you the moon.
āAww,ā Lucas cooed. He turned to face his friends. āNow thatās what I like to call the look of love.ā
Max, El, and Will looked over, Dustin still having his neck completely craned around and staring.
Steveās thumb brushed your cheek gently, a look in his eyes that none of the kids had ever seen before.
Will turned back around, shaking his head. āThis feels invasive.ā
āVery,ā Max agreed, looking away. āWhy canāt we do something fun on a Friday in the middle of the summer?ā
āBecause this takes priority,ā Dustin announced, eyes still fixated on you and Steve. āIām going to get to the bottom of this. Tonight. Mark my words.ā
āā“ļøĖļ½”ā
After not gathering enough evidence from the movies, the kids then followed you and Steve to a drive in diner later that night.
Your legs were kicked up on the dash, and by the speed in which your mouth was moving, you were definitely talking about whatever new nerdy interest you had gotten into recently.
āNo way,ā Dustin grumbled, peaking just barely above a bush with his binoculars over his eyes.
āWhat?!ā Lucas whisper shouted, thinking that Dustin had evidence that you two were dating.
āHer feet are on the dash!ā
Max threw her head back. āOh, my God. I told you theyāre not dating.ā
āThey definitely are,ā Dustin fired back, removing his binoculars from his face and turning to her. āSteve would kill any one of us if we put our shoes on the dash.ā
āThat is true,ā Mike agreed.
āOkay, and?ā Max asked. āTheyāre, like, super close. Iām sure he doesnāt give a shit.ā
āThis is ridiculous,ā Will mumbled. āI mean look at us! Weāre hiding in a bush stalking people!ā
āShh!ā Dustin shushed his friend. āYouāre going to get us caught,ā he whispered.
āWoah, look,ā El said softly, pointing a finger straight ahead.
The kids whipped their heads back over to you and Steve.
You were laughing, Steveās fingers brushing your hair out of your face. He was leaning in slowly whenā¦
You shoved his face out of the way.
āHa!ā Max exclaimed, standing up straight. āTold you they werenāt dating!ā
Mike grabbed her wrist, pulling her back down into the bush earning a glare from her. āGet down! Youāre gonna expose us!ā
āMaybe you need to be exposed for stalking, you creeps!ā
āYouāre literally stalking too!ā
āDoesnāt make any sense,ā Dustin mumbled.
āMakes sense to me,ā Max spoke up. āTheyāre not dating. Case closed. Letās go home.ā
āHe just kissed her,ā El spoke.
āWhat?!ā Lucas exclaimed, looking back to the car.
āAre you sure?ā Will asked with uncertainty. The angle in which they were would make it difficult to tell as they were facing your passenger side window.
āOn the cheek,ā El clarified.
Dustin stood up. āWeāre going to their apartment.ā
āWhat?!ā Max exclaimed, watching him, Lucas, and Mike climb out from behind the bush and toward their bikes. āYouāre joking! You have to be!ā
āHow would we even get in? Breaking and entering?ā Will asked with a scoff.
āNot necessary,ā Dustin told them. āI stole his spare. Come on, letās go!ā
Max and Will groaned, rolling their eyes.
āā“ļøĖļ½”ā
Steveās Beamer pulled into the parking lot of your apartment, the dim lights illuminating the street.
You smiled and turned to face him. āI had fun tonight, Steve,ā you said softly, cheeks flushed a shade of pink.
He smiled, turning the car off. āYeah?ā
You nodded. āMhm.ā
Steve leaned in over the center console, face just inches from yours. āWell, I had fun too,ā he murmured. His eyes flickered down to your lips. āGood thing I have more planned for tonight.ā
You raised your brows. āOh, really?ā He nodded with a low hum. āWhy donāt you tell me then?ā
āI think itās better I show you.ā
Steveās lips ghosted over yours before he finally kissed you.
You sighed into his mouth, your fingers raking through his hair. He tilted his head slightly, deepening the kiss. His lips parted slightly as your tongue was just centimeters away from entering his mouth.
He pulled away, nose brushing yours. āBut not here,ā he murmured. āWeāve got a whole apartment to ourselves.ā
You smiled as he hopped out of the car. He walked over to your door and opened it, extending his hand out to you.
You took it and he shut the door before locking the car and leading you up to your shared apartment.
As soon as the door opened, you were back on him again.
His back hit the door, your hands pressed firmly against his chest, lips on his. He groaned, hands moving to grab your waist.
He pulled away, eyes wide. āHoly shit, you want me that bad?ā he teased, that stupid smirk on his lips.
āShut up, Harrington,ā you said, rolling your eyes.
Steve chuckled, picking you up before kissing you again, your legs wrapping around him. He walked to your shared bedroom, lying you down onto your back on the bed.
Your legs remained wrapped around his waist as his lips peppered kisses down your jaw. He made his way down to your neck, playfully biting down on the sensitive skin.
You moaned softly, fingers digging into his back through the fabric of his shirt. āSteveā¦ā
āHmm?ā he asked, kissing the spot he just nipped.
āDid I leave my jacket there?ā
Steve furrowed his brows, completely caught off guard. He thought you were moaning his name because his mouth was making you feel good. Meanwhile you were asking about an article of clothing. He lifted his face up and glanced down at you. He followed your line of sight, staring at your jacket that was lying on the dresser. āMaybe,ā he said with a shrug.
He leaned back down, kissing your lips for about two seconds before you gently pushed his chest and he pulled away. āI know I didnāt leave that there.ā
Steve wanted nothing more but to kiss you in peace, yet here you were, stuck on a jacket that was lying on the damn dresser.
āBaby, you had to have left it there,ā he reasoned. āWhy else would it be there?ā
You couldāve sworn you put it back into the closet before you left, but maybe you didnāt.
āI guessā¦ā
Steveās hand slid up your shirt, causing you to inhale sharply.
He kissed your cheek, fingers trailing along the fabric of your bra. āI love you.ā
āI love you too,ā you responded as if it were second nature.
He leaned in to kiss you again, this time deeper. His tongue grazed your bottom lip and you let him in, sighing as your fingers ran up the back of his shirt, trailing along his muscles.
Suddenly, something creaked from under the bed.
You both jumped, pulling apart.
āWhat was that?ā you whispered, eyes wide.
Steveās eyes were wide too as they bore into yours. āI donāt know,ā he whispered back.
Bam!
āOw!ā
Something like instant recognition flashed behind Steveās eyes. āDustin?!ā he shouted, climbing off of the bed.
Dustin groaned, crawling out from under the bed. As soon as half of his body was out, Steve grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, yanking him up. āWhat the hell are you doing?!ā
āI was conducting naturalistic observation!ā Dustin defended himself, throwing his hands up.
āWhat the fuck does that mean?!ā
āYou were spying on us?!ā you shouted, getting off of the bed.
āI needed to know if you two were boyfriend and girlfriend!ā
āOf course sheās my girlfriend!ā Steve yelled, shoving Dustin back, making him stagger. āWhat the hell is wrong with you?!ā
Both you and Steve thought it was painfully obvious to everyone around you that you two were together. You both did so many things that only a couple would. So, how could anyone not know?
You ran a hand down your face. āYou didnāt think to just ask us?!ā
Dustin blinked. āOhā¦ā he trailed off. āI guess I couldāve done that,ā he mumbled.
You narrowed your eyes at the jacket on the dresser. āI knew I didnāt leave that there.ā
Dustinās eyes followed yours and he let out a loud sigh. āI told them not to touch anything,ā he grumbled, shaking his head in disappointment.
Steve blinked, turning to Dustin with raised brows. āWhat was that?ā
Dustin sucked his teeth, looking up at Steve sheepishly. āWould now be a good time to tell you that the rest of the party is here too?ā
Your eyes widened in horror.
āCan we come out now?ā you could make out the muffled voice of Mike coming from your closet.
āYeah, itās hot as hell in here!ā Lucas exclaimed.
āI didnāt condone any of this, Iām sorry,ā Max apologized.
āMe either!ā Will added.
āCan we sleepover?ā El asked.
You pulled your lips into a tight line, nostrils flaring slightly. āHow did you guys get in here?ā
āOh,ā Dustin chuckled. āI stole his spare key a while back,ā he said, motioning to the guy he now could identify as your boyfriend with full confidence, no questions asked.
Steve shut his eyes and ran a hand down his face. āJust a bunch of bad ass little kids.ā

Dear Steve,
For someone who loves words as much as I do, Iām finding the right ones hard to say. Youāve been my light in all the darkness. I know Iāve pushed you away and I know Iāve screamed and shouted at you, begging you to leave me. But Iām glad you didnāt. I donāt want you to leave. And now, despite my darkness prayers, I donāt want to leave either.Ā
I know I donāt say it, I never have, but I love you. I love you more than any words in the English language could ever express. I love the way you make me laugh. I love the way you cared for me at my lowest. I love the way you make me feel. I love the way you let me learn what it means to love.Ā
I donāt know what I did to deserve you in my life, but Iām glad you were a few chapters in it, though I wish I could say you were in more. When the clock ticks and strikes the end of my story, Iāll think of you.
Iāll think of the unconditional love I had for you. Iāll think of that night I pulled you out of that tree. Iāll think of our first ānotā date. Iāll think of that night my brother had us looking for a baby demo and your hand grabbed mine, making me realize that whatever I was feeling terrified me.
It terrifies me to feel so much for someone, Steve. I just get the feeling that nothing lasts forever and for whatever reason I think that pushing it away will make it hurt less in the end. I thought that pushing you away would prevent anything from happening to you. But I donāt want to live like this anymore. I want to be happy. I want to be in love. I want you to know that I love you.
Maybe in another timeline thatās possible for us, but it wasnāt this one.
I just want you to know that itās always been you. Iāve been painfully oblivious to many things in life, but Iāve never second guessed my love for you. I only ever second guessed if I was allowed to love you. I always thought itād be selfish to do so because I lived in constant fear that Henry would take you away from me. I thought that trying to suppress my feelings and dismissing yours was a reasonable approach. But it wasnāt fair to you and Iām sorry.
I wish we had more time together, because if we did Iād fix so many things. Youād never question my love for you. It would be so ridiculously obvious how much I need you. You're my lifeline and I never thought someone, let alone a boy, could be that for me. Yet, here we are.
Iām so in love with you, Steve Harrington. Iām so in love with your stupid hair. Iām so in love with the pool of honey that is your eyes. Iām so in love with the way your nose slightly scrunches when you smile. Iām so in love with the way you care. Iām so in love with the way you protect. Iām so in love with your selflessness. Iām so in love with you. All of you.

Dear Eddie,
Youāre such a fucking weirdo and I love you for it. Youāve taught me so many things about myself and how to view life. Youāre one of the best people Iāve ever known.
You honestly piss me off more than you know. Actually, you probably do know and thatās why you continue to do so. Anyway, youāve never actually made me mad. I kind of like how annoying you are and Iām sure youāve caught on by now.
I see a very successful future for you. I imagine you in a few years time all famous and in a band named Corroded Coffin (yes I remember that conversation). I picture you on tour and seeing the world while doing what you love. Maybe youāll find a girl abroad or something and fall in love.
My point is, despite the labels, I think youāll do fine in life, so long as you continue to just be you. Keep being a weirdo and annoying because honestly, anyone would take that any day over some chump that conforms and is miserable.
You light up every room you walk into. You change peopleās lives. Youāve changed my life.
I canāt imagine a world where you donāt exist. I donāt know how I got through so many years of my life without you in it. Youāve changed me and youāve changed me for the better. I still donāt know who I am, but I feel closer to whoever it is than ever before.
You bring out the best parts of me. Parts of myself I never knew existed. This might sound kind of morbid, but Iām happy Iām the first to go because I donāt know how Iād ever live a life without you there.
Youāre my best friend and Iāll love you forever Eddie Munson.

Dear Dusty Bun (I know you told me to never call you that, sorryā¦not really),
Unfortunately I wonāt have the privilege of seeing you grow up, but thankfully Iāve seen enough to know that youāve become an amazing human being.
When we were kids, you were probably the most annoying person I knew. You snitched all the time and Iād chase you around the house beating you with whatever I could get my hands on.
But as we got older, we grew closer. Youād tell me secrets youād never dare to tell Mom. Youād cover for me whenever I was doing things I shouldnāt have. We actually became friends and confided in one another and thereās nothing that could ever replace a sibling bond like our own.
Although youāre younger, I hate to admit it but you might just be smarter than me.
Donāt let that get to your head.
But not only are you academically intelligent, youāre emotionally intelligent. You always know when something is wrong. You know how to comfort people and you know all the right things to say and thatās very special. People need people like you in their lives in order to keep them going. I needed you in my life to keep me going.
When we were younger and I started to really pay attention, I wondered why you and I didnāt look like other siblings. After I found out that I was adopted, I felt like I didnāt belong. I felt like I didnāt truly own the Henderson name.
Yet, that same night that I found out and cried into my bedsheets, you came into my room, not a clue in the world. You laughed at me and made fun of me for ācrying myself to sleep like a babyā and afterwards casually asked me if I wanted to sneak out with you to ride bikes and my board.
Thatās when it hit me.
You would always be my little brother and Iād always be your older sister. Nothing could ever change that. Not even a last name.
Youāre a great person, Dustin, and Iām so privileged to have been able to call you my brother in this lifetime. I love you so much and if youāre reading this, Iām probably clowning you from the afterlife for crying.

Dear Max,
I know you told me to not be a stranger, yet thatās what I became. Iām ashamed and Iām sorry.
Youāre the sweetest person Iāve ever met and you make me laugh more than Iād like to admit.
Donāt take this the wrong way but Iām honestly kind of glad my brother brushed you off a few years back, otherwise you wouldnāt be the girl I now see as my little sister.
Weāre so much alike from music taste to skate boarding, and itās so odd seeing someone just like me. I think youāll always remind me of the younger version of myself. Youāre authentic, loyal, and compassionate. But at the same time, Iāve noticed how deeply guarded you are. Because I am too.
Iāve noticed that you and I struggle with vulnerability, especially around those we love. But if thereās one thing I can leave you with, itās to open up. Be honest. Stop using sarcasm to push people away because I can promise you if theyāre anything like Lucas, theyāre not letting you go.
Speaking of which, please tell your boyfriend to stop asking me for stuff for you. Since Iām now out of a job at Starcourt Sound, he wants all my skate stuff for you, which if Iām dead, you can have.
I wish we had all of the time in the world to go for one last skate or even one last sleepover. Yes, I enjoyed it despite acting annoyed. You and El are like the little sisters I never got to have.
Youāre a great kid and I only see the brightest of futures ahead for you and it makes me sad to know that I wonāt be able to watch you grow. I hope that after death there is something. Anything. Because Iām not too sure I like the idea of eternal silence. Maybe Iāll get to watch you somehow and haunt you as a ghost, which Iād totally do.
Your skater twin,

Dear Lucas,
Out of all of my brotherās original friends, youāve always been my favorite (donāt tell the others!).
Youāre so sweet and always considerate of everyone around you, which is rare to see in boys your age, so take pride in it.
Youāre one of those rare people that can walk into anyoneās lives and change it for the better. Your loyalty is a trait difficult to find these days and honestly, you have all my respect. I think you are such an incredible human being. Youāre so smart and you always show up when it matters the most, making you incredibly reliable.
While Iām gone, Iām asking you to look after and take care of my brother. I donāt even need to ask because I know you will. I trust your character.
I wish we couldāve gotten closer, and if I could go back and change that I would because youāre just such an extraordinary kid. Youāre going to have a life full of fulfilling opportunities, so take advantage of it. Iāll be cheering you on from the sidelines.

Dear Jonathan,
I think about that day we first started talking and bonding over The Clash a lot. Iāve always struggled to make friends and you were the first friend I made on my own since elementary school. I know, Iām a loser. Our friendship means the world to me even though weāre states apart now.Ā
Iām sorry you have to hear from me over written words, but your lineās always busy now so I suppose itās better than nothing at all. I know we promised each other to find ourselves that day in the woods years ago, and to be quite honest, Iām not sure I have. Thereās still parts of myself I donāt think Iāll ever fully understand. I donāt know who I am anymore and I hope you can figure out who you are in honor of me.
Not tell you who you are or anything, but I think youāre the most human person Iāve ever met. I donāt mean that in a weird or condescending way. I just think youāre so kind, creative, and honestly just see things in a way others donāt (I suppose thatās why you love photography so much as it allows you to see what you might have otherwise missed!), and it makes you so unique.
Youāre such a great friend and Iād love to spend more time with you but unfortunately thatās not the cards weāve been dealt.
Iād wish you the best in life, but I think youāll be alright. I know you struggle with feeling seen, but just know that I see you. I see you Jonathan Byers and you're one of the most authentic, resilient people Iāve ever had the pleasure of knowing and it makes me say with full confidence youāve got a bright future ahead of you.
If thereās one thing Iāve learned in the past few hours, itās that life is never promised. Thereās no guarantee that youāll wake up in the morning, so I guess what Iām getting at is go chase your dreams. Go make that film, go amend things with Nancy, go run for president for all I care.
