Heroes Masterlist!
Main Masterlist!
âGood morning, Hawkins! This is the WSQK The Squawk!â
A rubber chicken noise followed soon after, making you smile.
The small radio was turned on in your kitchen as you got ready to head out to study.
Life had been awfully strange the past year from looking for Henry nearly every other day to you graduating and becoming an adult.
Your grades were too bad your senior year to go straight to a four year and you missed the deadline to apply to junior college. You were currently working at the local diner to make some money and planned to apply to junior college next semester.
But as for now, you kept your mind sharp and distracted by studying whatever new material you could get your hands on.
âItâs lookinâ like a pretty regular day in Hawkins. Fifty five degrees, low chance of rain, medium chance of arrest, high chase of helicopters. But general banality aside, itâs an exciting day for me, your friend, entertainer, and DJ, Robin BuckleyâŚNice to meet you! âŚAKA Rockinâ Robin!â
The song Rockinâ Robin began to play and you smiled, reaching up into your cabinet for a glass. You walked over to your fridge, filling it with ice and water.
âAnd why is it a big day for me, you ask? Well, itâs my five hundredth broadcast. Yeah, you heard that right, folks. Five-double-O!â An applause ensued. âWhich means itâs been even longer since youâve heard the sultry voice of Jimmy âFast Handsâ Lee. But while Jimmy was fleeing Hawkins even faster than he moves those handsâŚâÂ
A scream followed Robinâs words and your eyes widened as you untwisted the bag of bread. You blinked, caught off guard and placed a piece into the toaster.
ââŚYours truly was watching slack-jawed as the earth split open beneath her feet and coughed up that tsunami of mysterious dandruff. And now, Iâm stuck here with you, my fellow quarantine compatriots. And if I can be brutally honest, I couldnât be happier. Because when you really think about it, why would you want to live anywhere else?â
You smirked, tying the bag of bread off and putting it away. Robin spreading propaganda was not on your 1987 bingo card, yet here she was.
After Hawkins cracked open, the government had been trying their best to cover it up and keep public hysteria at a minimum. No one truly knew what was going on except for you and your friends, which sometimes felt more like a curse than a blessing.
Youâd give anything to be a normal person who was oblivious to what was going on.
âI mean what town on earth can match our very impressive military to civilian ratio?â The sound of a whistle filled your kitchen. âAnd those free mandatory medical checkups? I mean, very cool. âCause after we inhaled those springtime snowflakes, I mean, who knows whatâs wrong with us? Maybe weâre fine, maybe not.â You giggled when someone cued the coughing sound effect. âNo one really knows for sure. After all, this was a ânatural phenomenon never seen by manâ,â Robin quoted in a robotic voice.
Your toast popped and you reached into the cabinet for a plate and set the toast on it before grabbing a knife and adding your butter.
âA phenomenon now covered up by a giant metal band aid. Quite the eyesore, but hey, great for sledding. Though seriously, kids, stop sledding on the giant steel band aid. You are going to kill yourselves, and also, the men with guns, they donât like it, not one bit.â
You grabbed your plate and water, setting it at the table and taking a seat before biting into your breakfast.
âWhile weâre on the subject of things not to do, please steer clear of the Military Access Control Zone, aka the MAC-Z, or as I like to call it, the Big Mac. I have no idea whatâs going on in there, but I have a gut feeling thereâs a pretty good reason theyâd like you to stay away. But hey, the rest of Hawkins is still there for you to enjoy. Someday soon theyâre gonna let us all out of here.â A bell rang twice right as you got up to grab a napkin from the counter.
âIn the meantime, be thankful this is your home, study for that test, enjoy that T.V. dinner, and go on that date.â
You sat back down at the table, your expression dropping slightly at the mention of a date.
âWhich, by the way, is exactly what yours truly is doing tonight. Thatâs right, Rockinâ Robin had a date, ladies and gentlemen!â Robin giggled right as the rubber chicken squeaked again.
You couldnât help but to smile. Robin and Vickie had gotten together and you couldnât have been happier for her. You thought they were cute together and complemented one another well.
âAnd now, who is this lucky someone? Well, donât be so nosy, kids. They know who they are. That is, if youâre listening, which I hope you are. Because this next one, itâs for you, babe.â
The song switched and you took another bite of your toast. Your morning was off to a great start, as it had seemingly been for the past year. That was until the radio started glitching.
You furrowed your brows, standing up and walking up to the kitchen counter. You grabbed the radio and hit it a few times, re-tuned it, and even turned it off and back on.
âWhat the hell,â you muttered to yourself.
Something else was going on and it wasnât your radio.
âWoah. Whatâs going on? What the hell? What the hell?!â Robin exclaimed, taking her headphones off and jolting up from her seat.
Back at The Squawk, they were experiencing some technical issues of their own.
Steve took his headphones off too, following Robin out of the booth. âI told you to stop thumbing your nose at the military,â he lectured Robin.
âI was reiterating their goddamn rules, encouraging compliance,â she argued.
âRight, there was no sarcasm there.â
âYeah, said the dingus with the rubber chicken.â
âThese are very serious people, Robin!â
âShit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit!â
Steve sighed, walking over to a small coffee table and snatching the walkie up, radioing the only person he knew could help. WellâŚmaybe not the only person who could help. He radioed the only person who would answer him. âHenderson, do you copy? Henderson?â
âYeah, I copy,â Dustinâs voice came though, slightly annoyed. âGod, you sound swell. Let me take a wild guess. Youâre not calling to wish me a good morning.â
âWell, no, itâs not exactly a good morning,â Steve replied. âWeâve got kind of a situation down here at the Squawk. The signal, its- its gone all wonky. I think Robin may have finally pissed them off.â
âDoubtful. She was encouraging compliance.â
âTold you!â Robin shouted at Steve.
âThe remote radio headâs the more likely culprit.â
Steve blinked, the jargon unfamiliar to him. âThe remote what?â he asked with furrowed brows.
âJust read the manual, Steve,â Dustin sighed.
âCome on, man,â Steve groaned. âThat thing might as well be in Greek.â
âThen learn Greek!â Dustin fired back. âI canât always be there to solve your problems for you, Steve.â
And with that, the line went dead.
âHenderson?â Steve radioed. No one replied. âGod!â Steve scoffed in annoyance. âLearn Greek,â he repeated, turning around to Robin. âYou heard that tone. You heard that right?â Steve tossed the walkie behind him, it landing on the couch.
âI swear to God, this stupid thing doesnât exist,â Robin groaned, shooting up from the drawer she was looking in.
âDid someone try Dustin again?â Jonathan asked, glancing up from a pile of books.
âHe turned off his walkie,â Robin replied, walking right past him.
âWhatâs up with him lately?â Nancy asked, crouched down and looking through a bottom shelf.
Electing not to ask you for help, for obvious reasons, Steve and Robin called up Jonathan and Nancy to help them find the manual. They had hoped that one of them would figure out what remote radio thing, or whatever the hell Dustin had said, was.
Steve was sitting at a table, sifting through some documents trying to find anything that could help. âDonât even get me started,â he huffed.
âYeah, please donât,â Robin practically begged.
Jonathan groaned, turning around to face the others. âWeâve been searching for nearly an hour now, are we sure this manual is real?â
âI donât know!â Robin exclaimed, about five seconds away from ripping out her hair. âIâve never even seen the damn thing!â she exclaimed, throwing her hand into the air.
Nancy sighed, standing up and putting her hands on her hips, feeling completely defeated by now. âCrazy idea, but uhâŚâ she trailed off, Steveâs eyes slowly moving to look up at her, somehow knowing exactly where this was going. âBut why donât we call the other genius?â
Robin looked over to Steve who appeared to be frozen in place. âIt is her day offâŚâ she muttered. âSheâs free.â
Steveâs jaw tensed. It wasnât like you guys hadnât seen each other in a year and a half, because you had due to the numerous crawls.
You justâŚnever talked.
Not once did you speak to one another since that day you broke up.
âCanât we just, like, keep looking?â Steve asked. âOr try Dustin again or something.â
âWeâve been looking for so long,â Nancy reasoned. âAnd Dustinâs walkie is off. I say we just call her up and get this sorted out instead of sitting here getting nothing done.â
Steve groaned and threw his head down onto the table, his arms wrapped around his head. âIâm gonna die.â
âWell then at least you wonât have to see her if youâre dead,â Jonathan joked. Steve lifted his head up, his narrowed eyes peaking over his arms.
âIâm just gonna call her,â Robin said, leaving the room to call you.
You were tying your shoes on the edge of your bed when your phone rang. You reached over and picked it up. âHello?â
âHey!â
You immediately recognized the voice.
âWhatâs up, Robs?â
âSo uhâŚI donât know if you were listening but thereâs some bonkers stuff going on down here at the Squawk.â
âOh yeah,â you replied. âI heard it.â
âRightâŚâ
âYup.â
âExactly,â she laughed awkwardly.
Your brows pressed together as you blinked. âWhy are you being so weird?â
âOkay, listen,â she began, and you could tell by her tone that she was about to spew out words a mile a minute. âWe need help, like serious help. We donât know how to fix anything and we called your brother but heâs no help and it got so bad we called Jonathan and Nancy. Yes, Jonathan and Nancy! We just need your little genius brain for, like, two seconds to fix the station and I swear, you donât even have to speak to Harrington! Just please, please, please, get your ass down here!â
Your body stiffened as you listened to her words. It was so painfully awkward to be around Steve, even for crawls. You had yet to be around him aside from a crawl so this would be the first.
Your fingers tugged at the telephone cord as you stared at the wall.
âHello?â
âIâm still here,â you said softly, letting out a sigh after. âIâll be there in a few.â
âThank you! Youâre a lifesaver!â
Your car pulled up to the Squawk, and as soon as you took the keys out of the ignition, you shut your eyes.
That nasty argument you had with Steve haunted you.
When he called you out for ignoring your emotions, it felt like a giant spotlight was shining down on you, telling everyone that it was true.
Because it was.
Even after your breakup.
You loved Steve, more than anything, so it was hard moving on. You never really did move on because you started to ignore how you felt. You never processed anything.
You started to study more and pick up more hours at work. Whenever you had free time, you filled it with more work, more books, more chores. You were never not busy. You thought that if you kept your mind occupied, youâd never have to think about that day, or that terrifying night.
You groaned, throwing your head back before you gathered up enough strength to get out of the car and walk inside. Your feet carried you through the doors and into the room outside of the station booth.
Steve and Robin were beside one another on the couch, Jonathan leaning back against the booth, and Nancy in a chair.
As soon as you walked into the room, Steve looked away, but his eyes couldnât help but to drift back to you for half a second.
God, whyâd your hair have to look so good and whyâd your skin have to glow? And jeez, who let you out of the house in those jeans?
The room was filled with tension, everyone knowing what happened between you and Steve.
Robin was the first to know and it was only a matter of time before word got to Nancy and Jonathan.
And of course, because of Dustin, the rest of the kids knew about it too.
And then because of El, Hopper knew and because Hopper knew, that meant Joyce knew.
Which meant everyone who was involved in saving the world knew meaning every single time you all met up for a crawl, it was painfully awkward.
Including now.
You looked everywhere but at Steve, trying so hard to ignore the way his shirt fit his frame and the way his stupid hair framed his face.
âSo uh, what happened?â you asked, trying as quick as possible to get to the bottom of the situation.
âRight!â Robin exclaimed. âOur whole station went kablooey and itâs all wonky now. We donât know how to fix it.â
You hummed in thought. âMy best guess is itâs the remote radio head.â
âFunny,â Jonathan chuckled. âYour brother said the same thing.â
âRight,â Nancy nodded. âRemote radio head. What is it and where is it?â
âItâs the transceiver module on a cell tower. It basically converts and amplifies radio frequency signals,â you explained and it made Steveâs face heat up.
He loved hearing you talk about nerdy stuff he knew nothing about. He loved hearing the sound of your voice, even if you wanted nothing to do with him now.
âIt should be on the top of the radio tower outside,â you said.
âAnd uhâŚwhatâs wrong with it, exactly?â Robin asked.
You shrugged. âLoose wire?â It was hard to tell from the ground, someone would need to go up and assess the issue.
The five of you walked outside, you and Steve standing as far away as possible from each other, as you all looked up at the tower.
âI donât see it,â Robin said.
âWell, itâs up there somewhere,â you stated. âKinda has to be or else none of this frequency stuff would be working.â
âSo, I guess somebodyâs gotta climb to the tippy top of this bad boy andâŚâ Robin trailed off, making a noise as if to mimic fixing something, moving her hands in a similar mannerism.
âWithout a harness or anything, it seems kind of dangerous,â Nancy commented.
You nodded in agreement. âYeah, definitely. Pretty risky job.â
âAka, job for good old Steve Harrington,â Steve spoke, looking up at the tower.
âNo third person, please,â Robin cringed.
You furrowed your brows, glancing over at Steve who was already looking at you. He averted his gaze quickly and walked away.
Jonathan caught on before anyone else. Steve was silently looking for your approval.
Which only meant one thing.
Jonathan was about to mess with him.
âAlright,â Jonathan said, walking beside Steve and looking up at the tower with him. âI, uhâŚI actually think this might be a better job for Jonathan Byers,â he said, taking his coat off. âIâm, like, one quarter monkey, dude.â
Steve took his coat off, placing a firm hand on Jonathanâs chest. âIâve got this, Byers. Donât sweat it.â He tossed his coat aside, Robin catching it against her chest, and headed straight for the tower.
You rolled your eyes. âIdiot,â you muttered.
âWhat?â Robin asked, turning to you.
âVoltage.â
While a part of you hated Steve, the other part of you that still loved him somewhere didnât want to find him dead.
âRight,â she realized. âUh, voltage!â she called after Steve, making him stop in his tracks. âUnless you wanna fry,â she said, holding her hands up.
âYeah, I know,â he said, turning to walk towards the door. âIâm not an idiot,â he added, looking over his shoulder and glancing at you for some sort of approval. You instead had your arms crossed and rolled your eyes, which heâd be lying if he said he wasnât slightly embarrassed.
He opened the door and walked inside to turn the voltage off. He turned the dial all the way down to zero and by the time he walked out, Jonathan was already climbing the ladder.
âWoah, dude, what are you doing?â
Jonathan stopped on the ladder and turned around. âI got this, dude,â he said, mocking Steveâs word choice. âDonât sweat it.â Jonathan flashed him a teasing smile, climbing up the ladder.
Steve looked over to you and you had your brows furrowed as you watched Jonathan climb up.
Steve looked back up at Jonathan. âSon of aâŚâ he muttered to himself before immediately taking off and bolting to the tower. He climbed up the ladder moving as fast as he could trying to pass Jonathan who was a few steps ahead.
You blinked, turning around with a sigh as soon as you saw Steve. âWhat the hell is he doing, Jonathan literally said he had it.â
âTrying to win you back?â Robin suggested with a shrug, resulting in you cringing.
The sound of a vehicle pulling up made you turn your head, and when you did, you saw a very familiar cemitruck.
âI thought grocery delivery wasnât until tomorrow?â Robin asked.
âMe too,â Nancy sighed, staring at the truck.
Meanwhile, back at the radio tower, Steve and Jonathan climbed as fast as they could to the top. Once there, they both looked down, realizing how far up they truly were.
Jonathan quickly turned around, spotting the issue. He crouched down, screwing two loose cords back together. He stood up straight again, looking at the box. It still wasnât on.
Steve hit it with the back of his hand once, the box wiring back to life. He shrugged when Jonathan glanced over at him. Never fails.
Jonathan narrowed his eyes at him. âUh huh.â
They both bolted over to the edge, shouting âI fixed it!â when they realized that none of you girls were standing where you once were.
Meaning you werenât there and gave no shits.
âDamn it,â Steve muttered under his breath.
You, Nancy, and Robin stood outside the truck as Murray opened the back. âAlright,â he sighed, climbing inside. âSantaâs brought a full sack today.â He grabbed a few bags, moving them to the front before climbing out. âA fresh telemetry tag,â he said, handing you the box. âScarcer than henâs teeth, these things.â
You looked down at the box, subconsciously looking away to see if someone was back yet.
Murray turned around, grabbing two metal boxes by their handles and handing them to Nancy. âEnough bullets and shells for Hop to start a small war, if he should so choose.â He reached into a box, grabbing a lettuce head and flashing it at you. âAnyone order a salad?â He turned around again and grabbed a grenade, a cheeky smile on his face. âGrenade salad?â
Your face scrunched at his joke and it didnât go unnoticed by him.
âI hid the grenades under the, uh, lettuce,â he explained, his bubbly tone dropping.
You nodded, brows raised. âThatâs nice, Murray.â
âOkay,â he muttered before turning back into the truck to show you more goods. âGatorade for Elâs battery,â he said, picking up a bottle and holding it up to you.
Footsteps began to fill your ears and you turned your head to find Jonathan and Steve jogging back. âSomeone say Gatorade?â Jonathan asked.
âLet me get one of those,â Steve panted, clearly out of breath from climbing to the top of the radio tower and back down again.
âSure,â Murray said, tossing him the bottle. âBut I donât think itâs gonna go too well withâŚâ he trailed off, reaching into his bag. âPeatnut butter-â
âBoppers!â Steve exclaimed like a kid in a candy store. âGod, I missed these things,â he said, right as Murray tossed him the box.
The corner of your lips tugged upward slightly as you watched Steve.
God, whyâd he have to be so cute even after you broke up?
Robin glanced over at you and her expression softened. She loved you and Steve both, so it was weird for her being around the two of you after you broke up. She was silently praying for the day you two would just get back together, but she was beginning to lose hope as it had already been over a year by now.
âThanks,â Steve thanked him, tucking the box under his arm and screwing the cap back onto his drink.
âDonât worry, Mr. Byers,â Murray went on, making Jonathan look up to him. âI got you a present too.â He reached into his pocket and pulled out a cassette tape. âI know youâre allergic to jazz, but just give it a whirl,â he said, drawing a small circle in the air with the tape. âI think youâll find it quite engaging.â Not only was there too much emphasis on the last word, Murray winked at Jonathan.
You were onto himâŚ
Jonathan snatched the tape, looking over to you. You raised a brow and he cleared his throat, looking back down at the tape in his hand.
Nancy slowly turned to Jonathan, but before she could give him a look that could even slightly inform him as to what she was thinking, Murray bopped her on the head with an envelope. âAnd for the station manager, the reason for my premature delivery,â he said, handing it to her.
Nancy took the envelope, sighing before opening it and pulling the papers out. You peaked over her shoulder, eyes scanning over the documents.
But you werenât the only one who wanted a peak.
Steve stood behind you, looking over your shoulder too.
You stiffened, consumed by his body heat and frame that was nearly touching your back.
âA burn?â Nancy asked. âTonight? But thatâs-â
âToo soo, I know,â Murray interrupted. âWhatever theyâre doing in the Upside Down evidently needs a serious injection of resources.
Nancy flipped to the next page and Robinâs eyes widened. âThatâs a lot of cargo.â
âI figure a supply drop this big takes two hours, minimum.â
âWhich gives Hopper plenty of time for a crawl,â Nancy concluded.
âMaybe tonightâs the night we finally find that bastard and end this.â
Something behind your eyes changed.
Hope.
After all of the crawls you had been through, you had a good feeling about this one. You were hopeful that tonight would be the night.
âHey, let me see that,â Steve said from behind you. His arm brushed yours, his chest pressing into your back as he reached for the documents in Nancyâs hand.
Jonathan watched with raised brows as you stiffened, your eyes going wide at the contact.
Nancy blinked, caught off guard, while Robin smirked, knowing damn well Steve did that on purpose.
Nancy handed him the documents, and he thanked her, his knuckles brushing your arm, creating a line of goosebumps along your skin.
He glanced down at you and smirked, watching as your face went a shade of pink and your eyes blinked rapidly.
He didnât even look at the documents. He was looking at you.
âHey there, friends, this is Rockinâ Robin! Sorry about the abrupt departure. I hope you survived without me. We had some annoying technical difficulties.â
You watched as Steve queued up a glass shattering sound effect followed by crying.
You all regrouped in the booth, Robin hopping back onto the radio to alert the others using code words about another crawl.
âBut to make it up to you, we have a very special treat thatâs sure to turn your day upside downâŚâ
The song Upside Down began to play, and your heart couldnât help but to race in anticipation as it did leading up to every crawl. The adrenaline of knowing that you were sending Hopper down there and that he could potentially find Henry was not only exhilarating, it was nerve wrecking.
âNow, before you start bumping, hereâs a few fun facts about the Boss. She was born Diane in the North End of Detroit. Berry Gordy, thatâs Gordy with a G, signed her to Motown in 1961. And one is the key number, because between 1964 and â67, the Supremes had ten songs hit the top of the charts. Thatâs right, ten. Then in â78, she tried to make it big in the movies with The Wiz, which was a colossal flop-a-roonie. But, in my personal opinion, I still dig it. I mean. Michael Jackson as a scarecrow? Give it a chance. But make sure you bring your super-sized popcorn, because this movie has a run time of over two hours. Alright, class dismissed. I hope you were taking notes. There will be a test later. Take it away Diane.â
Robin turned the music up, taking her headphones off and shutting off her mic. The five of you left the room, walking down the hallway to a shelf. Nancy moved a box out of the way and undid the lock before sliding the shelf away, all of you following her down the stairs. Steve was the last one in, moving the shelf back over and putting the box over the hole.
You all followed Nancy to the projector. You pulled a chair out, kicking your legs up onto the table. Robin grabbed a chair and pulled it up, sitting right beside you.
And of course, Steve pulled a chair up beside you, putting his legs on top of the table too.
His knee brushed yours and he gazed over at you. You could feel his eyes on yours. He wasnât pulling his leg away.
You moved your leg away from his, crossing it over your other one.
Jonathan stood near the projector with his arms crossed.
âAlright,â Nancy began, walking up to where the visual was projected. âSo, assuming Murrayâs intel is correct, the supply convoy is set to reach Hawkins at 10:00 sharp. Meaning, I want Hopper in the tunnels en route to the MAC-Z no later than 9:00,â she explained, using a stick to point to a location on the map.
âBarring unusual traffic, I expect the convoy to reach the MAC-Z at 10:15. And now the crawl begins. Hop is now in the Upside Down, traveling at what I hope to be a gentle thirty miles an hour, which will allow Dustin and Steve to follow along in the Rightside Up.â Her stick moved slowly down the street on the map.
âI expect the convoy to take the same route as last month. Main to Cornwallis, one turn. But if you guys hit any red lights-â
âIâll blow right through,â Steve interrupted.
Nancy whipped her head around. âOnly if thereâs no MPs around,â she said, pointing her stick at Steve and earning a scoff from him. âRemember, if you guys get pulled over, we lose Hop, weâre toast.â
Steve put his hands up. âI got it.â
Nancy turned back around, pointing with her stick and moving it up. âYou two are going to move up Cornwallis for roughly six miles. And as the convoy reaches this Shell station here, we radio Hop to disembark.â She pulled her stick away, walking away from the screen. âWhich will drop him at the border of G1, where heâll have two whole hours to search for Vecna, which is ample time,â she said confidently. âHeâs cleared zones much faster. So, all in all, signs point to another successful crawl,â she said with a smile, turning around to face all of you.
Steve shifted, moving to sit on the edge of the table with his arms, feet resting in the chair he was in.
Jonathan stood still and cleared his throat while Robin glanced at Steve then back to Nancy.
âIs there a problem?â Nancy asked.
âUmmâŚâ Jonathan trailed off, looking down at his shoes. âNo. No, I mean, I think itâs good,â he nodded, shrugging his shoulders.
âYeah,â Steve agreed. âYeah, itâs good. Itâs really good. Itâs just uhmâŚâ
âZone G1 is not that exciting or Vecna-y,â Robin interjected. âI mean, what does it have? A Circuit City, a couple of houses, and a Big Buy?â she asked. âWhat are the chances Vecnaâs hiding there?â
You shook your head. âDoesnât matter,â you finally spoke up, everyone now turning their attention to you. âWe keep searching each zone until we find him.â
âI agree,â Nancy said. âWe stick to the plan. We get into the Upside Down the only way we can, through the MAC-Z gate under the cover of a burn.â
âUnlessâŚâ Steve trailed off. âHeâs already dead.â
You scoffed, now finally looking at him. He looked over at you and faltered for a moment. âI mean, your plan is great,â he said, turning to Nancy. âItâs justâŚthis is crawl what? Are we in the thirties now? And not a single baddie in sight.â
You rolled your eyes, crossing your arms over your chest.
Nancy was growing annoyed too, pulling her lips into a tight line.
âEl canât find him in her bath, Will hasnât had his goosies since the shake ânâ quake, andâŚâ he trailed off, clearing his throat. âHenderson hasnât had a vision for who knows how long.â
You glanced down at your shoes.
The man you loved now only called you by your last name.
You had done it too, referring to him as Harrington instead of Steve. It still hurt though, experiencing your relationship change into whatever awkward hell it had become.
âGoosies?â Jonathan asked, oblivious to anything else that came out of Steveâs mouth.
âAnd last you two saw Vecna,â Steve went on, motioning a hand between Nancy and Robin. âHe was roasting like a turkey and pumped full of lead. And that was before he fell three full stories. So, you ever think that, I donât know, weâre scouring a battlefield that we already, like, won?â
âHave you forgotten what he showed Nancy?â Jonathan asked. âHawkins on fire. Karen, Holly, everyone dead. Not to mention, what sheâs seen?â he went on, nodding to you. âApparently weâre all supposed to die, and so far only three have.â
âYeah, man,â Steve replied. âHe also showed her her mother walking around like she didnât die years ago. Thatâs what he does, he gets in your head and tries to scare you.â
âYeah, well he did a good job because I am scared,â Nancy said. âAnd you should be scared too. Because if heâs still out there, heâs planning to end our world, so-â
âWe donât stop looking,â you said. âIt doesnât matter how many crawls it takes, we donât stop until we find him and know for sure that heâs dead and never coming back.â
Nancy nodded affirmatively. âExactly.â
Steve glanced over at you for a moment. He wondered if you had listened to him and confronted your emotions, which was a dumb thing to wonder. You hadnât. You were just too stubborn.
He knew how much youâd been keeping yourself busy, thanks to Robinâs intel, which wasnât a good sign.
He wanted nothing more but to save you.
But as he had said that day you broke up, he couldnât save someone who didnât want to be saved.
âIt was this weird feeling. Like something I really havenât felt before. Mike thinks it could mean that maybe Vecnaâs close, that heâs finally re-emerged. And if he has, maybe weâll find him tonight.â
Willâs words went in one ear and out the other. You stared down at the hospital bed, not looking at the person in it, but the bed frame.
It had become routine to finally start seeing Max with Lucas. Sometimes the other kids would join, and today that person was Will. Regardless, every time you went to see Max, you completely dissociated. You zoned out, never really talking. Never really feeling.
Will turned to you, watching as your eyes remained locked onto the bedframe. He said your name. âWhat do you think?â
You blinked, sitting up straight. âSorry. What?â
âAbout us finding Vecna tonight,â he said.
âOhâŚâ you trailed off. âYeah. Weâll find him.â
Lucas let out a sigh nodding his head. âI think so too. I think weâll find him this time for sure.â
The room fell quiet again with only the soft beeps of the machine. You tugged nervously at the necklace around your neck, eyes drifting back down again.
âYou wanna play the tape?â Will asked Lucas. âIâm just- Iâm just gonna go grab a Coke or something caffeinated because itâs gonna be a long night,â he said, standing up. Will tapped your shoulder with the back of his hand. âYou wanna come?â
You jumped slightly, looking up at him. He had a soft smile, something reassuring behind his eyes. âYeah, sure.â
He nodded over to Lucas. âYou want one?â
âNo,â he said, shaking his head. âIâm good. Thanks.â
You pushed your chair back, standing up. Will walked out of the room first, holding the door open for you to which you thanked him. As soon as you were out of the room, it was like you could breathe again.
âYou alright?â Will asked, walking shoulder to shoulder down the hallway to the vending machine.
âYeah,â you breathed out. âJustâŚkinda feels suffocating being in there.â
Willâs expression softened. âYeah, I get it. But Iâm proud of you.â
You furrowed your brows, looking over to him. âYou are?â
He nodded with a smile. âYeah. I mean, youâre here and thatâs progress. It means youâre healing.â
While you continued to ignore how you felt, you were making slow progress. It was stagnant though. You just showed up because it felt obligatory and you stayed silent the entire time, completely zoned out pretending you were anywhere but there.
Was that progress? Or was it taking two steps back?
You started to do the same thing whenever you went to see Billy and Eddie. You stopped talking to them and dissociated.
You swallowed hard, stopping at the vending machine. âDoesnât really feel like it,â you admitted. Will reached into his pocket for some cash and looked over to you.
âWhat do you mean?â he asked.
You shrugged, letting out a sigh. âI just zone out and pretend Iâm not even there. Every time Iâm here Iâm not present. Iâm somewhere lost in my own mind.â
Will pulled out a crumbled dollar bill and flattened it. âYou used to never be able to walk near this building. I think you being here is great progress.â
You smiled softly. Will struggled for a long time with Eddieâs death. He was the first person in his life to get through to him and make him realize that he was perfectly fine just the way he was. Will faced his emotions, coming to terms with what was and eventually reaching a place where he could talk about what happened without breaking down.
Same with Robin.
They had both fully healed whereas your wound was seemingly still fresh.
Will put his dollar into the machine and two Cokes fell out. He handed you one with a smile.
âWill, I was gonna buy my own,â you said.
He laughed, rolling his eyes. âPlease, itâs like one cent, itâs fine.â
âThanks,â you smiled, accepting the soda.
He nodded, cracking open his and taking a sip. He hummed. âIsnât this new Coke so much better than old Coke?â
âI honestly canât taste a difference,â you giggled, the debate one in which you didnât necessarily understand.
âWhat?!â Will exclaimed. âThis tastes a million times better!â
You laughed. âIf you say so.â You handed him your drink. âCan you hold this a sec? Iâm gonna run to the restroom really fast.â
âSure,â he said, taking your drink into his hand.
âThanks, William,â you teased before turning on your heel and walking down the hallway.
âHey! I said stop calling me that!â he called after you. He sighed and shook his head. âWilliam,â he repeated, under his breath. He looked up, something, or rather someone catching his attention. âRobin!â Will called, trying to grab the girlâs attention by waving his hand. âRockinâ Robin!â
She didnât hear him, turning the corner.Â
He followed her.
âDustin, youâre an hour late, man. Youâre making us nervous. We need you here at the Squawk.â Lucas paced back and forth, trying to get ahold of Dustin through the walkie. No one had seen him since after school and everyone was growing increasingly worried.
âDustin, if you can hear us, please respond. Over,â Lucas tried again.
Just then, you walked out of the Sqwawk, coming outside to meet with the others. âI just got off the phone with my mom. She hasnât seen him either.â
âChrist, Henderson,â Steve muttered under his breath.
âHeâll show. He always shows,â Will reassured everyone.
Steve checked his watch and Robin shoved her hands into her pockets. You let out a half annoyed, half worried sigh as you bit the inside of your cheek.
âTry him again,â Steve told Lucas.
âCome in Dustin. Are you there? Earth to Dustin. This is serious, man. Quit playing. We canât wait around. Get your ass to the Squawk. We canât wait around. We need you here now. This is not funny. Are you there? Dustin, is everything okay? Dustin!â
You began to pace back and forth, nerves coursing through your veins so much so that you could feel it in your fingers.
Surely, he was fineâŚright?
You had grown more protective over him the past year, worried that something else would happen. He understood why you had become the why you were, but he hated how much you hovered over him.
And now the one time you let him do his own thing without telling you what he was doing, he was nowhere to be seen.
You halted abruptly, seeing none other than El, Joyce, and Hopper in the distance.
El made eye contact with Mike and came running up and hugging him.
You walked towards Hopper and Joyce, one thing on the forefront of your mind.
âHopper,â you said.
âNo.â
You blinked, throwing your hands up and joining him by his side. âYou didnât even let me finish!â
âBecause I know that look and the answer is no,â he fired back immediately, keeping his pace as he walked up to the Squawk.
âHopper!â
âNo.â
âJust-â
âNo.â
You walked faster, standing in front of him and stopping, causing him to stop too. Your arms were crossed over your chest as he let out a sigh, throwing his head back.
Joyce raised her brows, deciding to go meet Will knowing this was likely to escalate.
âLet me go with you,â you practically demanded.
Youâd asked almost every other crawl to go with him and he said no every single time. Sometimes he wished he wouldâve died back in that Russian base because you were probably one of the most annoying kids he had met.
Second to Mike, of course.
You were relieved to find out that he was alive, but as soon as the crawls started and everyone had their own parts to play, you started pestering him.
No one thought you were in the right frame of mind to do just about anything. You had built the telemetry tracker with Dustin and after that, you were virtually useless.
You just waited at the Squawk and listened in to what was going on. You begged for something, anything to do, but they never would let you. They knew how angry you were and were terrified that youâd do something reckless.
Which, if presented the chance, you probably would.
Hopper ran a hand down his face. âI told you once before that the answer was no. The answer today is still the same.â
He took a step to the side to walk around you and you moved with him, blocking his path. âHopper, Iâm the one who caused all of this. I should be the one to put an end to it.â
Hopperâs expression softened. While you seemed fine on the outside, you were clearly still hurting somewhere on the inside.
Hopper placed a hand on your shoulder. âLook, youâre a great kid,â he said earnestly. âYouâre so smart and you treat everyone who walks into your life like family. But you canât come with me. Okay?â You huffed, jaw clenching as you looked away from him. âIf something were to happen to you while we were down there, Iâd never be able to live with myself.â
âI canât either,â you whispered, shaking your head. âYou think I can live with myself knowing what happened? BillyâŚMaxâŚEddieâŚâ you trailed off, voice cracking with each name. âI have to find him, Hopper. I have to be the one to kill him.â
Something in Hopperâs face shifted. He was so shocked to hear you say the word âkillâ. Not âput an end toâ or âstopâ. But kill.
You wanted to kill Henry.
Hopperâs hand was still on your shoulder as he crouched down slightly to meet your height. âCan I ask you something?â You furrowed your brows but nodded anyway. âIf and when the time comes and youâre the one whoâs supposed to kill your father, will you do it?â
Your heart pulsed as the word âfatherâ. Not Henry. Not One. Not Vecna.
Because somewhere underneath the monstrous mask was a man.
Your father.
You shifted uncomfortably, looking away from Hopper.
âJust think about it, kid,â he said, standing up straight and walking back to the Squawk.
You stood there for a moment, Hopperâs words replaying in your head.
If and when the time comes and youâre the one whoâs supposed to kill your father, will you do it?
Was it truly in your nature to kill someone, let alone your own estranged father?
Inside the Squawk, you all helped Hopper load up and prepare for the crawl.
You ensured that the telemetry tracker was good to go before handing it to him. He thanked you and you nodded, still avoiding eye contact.
You were clearly still upset from earlier and truth be told, despite how annoying you were, he cared about you and felt bad.
He ruffled your hair and scrunched your nose with a small smile.
And that small reaction was enough for him.
He smiled and held up the tag as he walked away. âTagâs active,â he told Robin.
âCopy,â she replied, sitting at the desk and radioing Steve. âHarrington, you getting any signal? Tag is active.â
âYeah, just give me a second,â he radioed back.
You moved over to the table with the rest of the kids, leaning back on it as you waited. A few seconds later, Steveâs voice cut through the silence.
âHey, anybody know how Hendersonâs wheelie thing works?â
âThereâs a small switch under the wheel,â you explained. âItâs the safety lock.â
Robin nodded. âThere should be a safety lock under the wheel.â
âOkay, getting a signal. Itâs pretty quiet thoughâŚâ he trailed off and it was quiet for a moment. âOkay signalâs holding a steady 90 dB. But how exactly am I supposed to monitor this and drive without Henderson?â
âUh, hear anything from Inspector Gadget?â Hopper asked.
âNothing,â Mike replied, tugging his backpack over his shoulder, ready to go.
Willâs eyes lit up. âI can do it,â he spoke up. âIâŚI can monitor.â
âNo. Youâre staying here,â Joyce said almost immediately.
âNo, Mom,â Will reasoned. âI helped her and Dustin set up the antenna,â he explained, motioning a hand to you. âI know how to work it.â
âOut of the question,â Joyce replied. She turned to you. âYou built it. You know how to work it, right?â
You didnât even have a chance to respond before Will spoke up again.
âYou know she doesnât wanna be in there with Steve,â he reasoned, growing more annoyed by the second.
You shifted awkwardly. He wasnât wrong. You didnât want to be in there with Steve.
Joyce said your name, making you look up at her. âCan you justâŚâ she trailed off, an apologetic look on her face. âPlease?â
You glanced over at Will and he was silently pleading for you to tell her no. To tell her to let him do it.
But it wasnât your place.
You let out a shaky sigh, mentally preparing to spend the night with Steve in the confined space that was the stupid Squawk van. âI can do it.â

Dear Billy,
I just wanted to say that I appreciate you.
Itâs kind of weird though because one moment youâre bashing my head into the wall, knocking out my best friend and the guy that would later be my boyfriend (that I think you secretly hate), and the next minute Iâm sneaking into your window late every night and having conversations Iâd never dare to have with anyone else.
Funny how life works, isnât it?
I honestly hated your guts when you first showed up to Hawkins. I thought you were insufferable, an asshole even.
But then that night at the mall when it seemed all hope was lost, I saw you. The real you.
And Iâm glad I did because Iâll forever cherish those nights spent together. It was nice to have someone in my life who truly understood me. All of me. You were the one person I could go to who just got me. You never tried to fix anything, you just listened and asked me questions that made me think about myself and I appreciate you more than anything.
Never in a million years did I think Iâd say this, but youâre surprisingly a good person.
Iâve never seen someone who actually wanted to change and did it. Itâs kind of inspirational in a way. Youâre a reminder that itâs never too late to change no matter how dark your past may be.
So, keep going. Keep fighting to be the person you want to become and your life will only be up from there.

Whether you and Steve Harrington were touchy best friends who seemingly had magnets that drew you into one another, or simply just a couple, was a mystery to which no one had a definitive answer to.
It was no secret that you two were best friends for the past couple of years. You both met in middle school and ever since you were put in the same science class, you two were inseparable.
Your playful shoves and harsh pillow fights that left you with a headache for days slowly matured into something more intimate as you both grew up.
Your fingers would brush, your knees would touch, youâd tangle your legs with his.
No one questioned it at first. Not until you and your friends were hanging out at the Wheelerâs place during a movie night.
The kids had taken the floor and you older teens were spread out along the couch. Robin tucked away in the corner with her knees pulled to her chest, Nancy sitting beside her with her legs crossed, Jonathan to her left with his arms crossed, and Eddie sitting next to him, his head drooping back every now and then as he slowly fell asleep.
And of course, there was you and Steve on the other side of the couch.
Your back was pressed against the arm of the couch, legs draped over Steveâs. But that wasnât the issue. The issue was that his fingers were gently grazing up and down your thigh.
Dustin was lying on his stomach and glanced over his shoulder. The poor kid had to do a double take to ensure his eyes werenât deceiving him.
And surely enough they werenât.
One of Steveâs hands was on your knee while the other was caressing the soft skin exposed at your thigh.
You yawned, leaning to rest your head onto his shoulder. Steve smiled at you and snuggled his nose into the crook of your neck.
Dustinâs eyes widened.
Since when were you and Steve a thing?
And thatâs the question that made him think for days on end.
He couldnât go fifteen minutes without his mind wandering back to the idea of you and Steve being a thing. Everyone knew you two were close, but close enough that he was touching your thigh and rubbing his nose along your neck?
What the fuck kind of friendship was that?
Dustin thought maybe thatâs the kind of friendship you two had established.
But the more he thought about it, the more he realized that he would never be caught dead doing such a thing with one of his friends.
Then againâŚyou and Steve had always been touchy.
Dustin couldnât take the spiraling questions in his own head anymore. He needed answers and he needed them fast.
He rounded up the party at his house one late afternoon and paced his living room.
âDoes anyone think their relationship is kinda weird?â he asked, walking back and forth, hands on his hips.
Mikeâs eyes followed Dustin. âI mean, theyâve always been touchy,â he said. âThis isnât some insane revelation.â
Dustin halted in his tracks. âThatâs what I thought, but the other day when we had a movie night, she was pretty much sitting on top of him and he was, like, touching all up on her and rubbing his nose against her neck,â he explained, cringing at each and every word. The vision was forever ingrained into his mind and he wished for a way to delete it.
âThatâs disgusting,â Will gagged, scrunching his nose.
âWell, what if theyâre dating?â Lucas suggested.
âThatâs what I was thinking too,â Dustin replied.
El furrowed her brows, looking between the group. âI do not follow. Wouldnât they tell us they are boyfriend and girlfriend?â
âI mean, I guess,â Lucas shrugged. âUnless they wanted to keep it a secret.â
âBut why?â El asked.
âWho knows,â Max grumbled, leaning back onto the couch. âCanât we go to the arcade or something?â She was growing increasingly bored by the second. She didnât really care what you and Steve were. In her mind, it was none of her business.
Dustinâs eyes lit up. âHoly shit,â he breathed out. âTheyâre hanging out today! We could go spy on them!â
âAnd see if theyâre a thing!â Lucas exclaimed.
Max blinked, standing up. âWoah, woah, woah,â she said, closing her eyes and shaking her head. When she opened them again, Lucas was standing too. âWeâre not gonna go spy on them!â
âI think Steve mentioned something about the movies,â Dustin explained, already moving to grab his shoes from beside the door.
âUh, hello?!â Max shouted. âWeâre not spying on them!â
Mike stood up, checking his watch. âWait, what time is the showing? We should be there before they show up.â
Lucas snapped his fingers. âSmart.â
âAre you all deaf?!â Max yelled.
âSix oâclock showing,â Dustin said, tying his laces. âWe can make it if we leave now.â
Dustin shot up, him and Mike already walking out the front door. Lucas went to leave too, looking over his shoulder from the doorway to see Max standing in the living room with a look of bewilderment. âMax, come on!â he said before walking out the door.
Maxâs hand landed on her face before turning to face El and Will who were still sitting on the couch with wide eyes. âI hate boys,â Max sighed.
âHey!â Will scoffed.
âYou donât count.â
ââ´ď¸Ë・â
The kids claimed their spots towards the front of the theater, assuming that you and Steve wouldnât want to sit too close to the screen.
A few minutes had gone by before you and Steve walked in.
Dustin sank into his seat, pulling his cap further down his face in an attempt to cover it. âIâve got eyes on our targets,â he whispered.
One of Steveâs hands rested against your lower back, the other holding a bucket of popcorn. You were rambling about something and Steve was nodding his head, a small smile on his lips.
âWow, theyâre totally dating, hooray,â Max mused sarcastically. âCan we leave now?â
Dustin turned around, looking over the seats watching as you and Steve sat beside each other. âNot yet. We donât have solid evidence.â
Will rolled his eyes. âSo youâre just gonna sit there looking over the seats like a complete weirdo for the entire movie?â
âYes.â
El raised a brow. âThat is creepy.â
Lucas and Mike peaked over their shoulders. You wrapped your arm around Steveâs looking up at him with eyes that twinkled as if he had given you the moon.
âAww,â Lucas cooed. He turned to face his friends. âNow thatâs what I like to call the look of love.â
Max, El, and Will looked over, Dustin still having his neck completely craned around and staring.
Steveâs thumb brushed your cheek gently, a look in his eyes that none of the kids had ever seen before.
Will turned back around, shaking his head. âThis feels invasive.â
âVery,â Max agreed, looking away. âWhy canât we do something fun on a Friday in the middle of the summer?â
âBecause this takes priority,â Dustin announced, eyes still fixated on you and Steve. âIâm going to get to the bottom of this. Tonight. Mark my words.â
ââ´ď¸Ë・â
After not gathering enough evidence from the movies, the kids then followed you and Steve to a drive in diner later that night.
Your legs were kicked up on the dash, and by the speed in which your mouth was moving, you were definitely talking about whatever new nerdy interest you had gotten into recently.
âNo way,â Dustin grumbled, peaking just barely above a bush with his binoculars over his eyes.
âWhat?!â Lucas whisper shouted, thinking that Dustin had evidence that you two were dating.
âHer feet are on the dash!â
Max threw her head back. âOh, my God. I told you theyâre not dating.â
âThey definitely are,â Dustin fired back, removing his binoculars from his face and turning to her. âSteve would kill any one of us if we put our shoes on the dash.â
âThat is true,â Mike agreed.
âOkay, and?â Max asked. âTheyâre, like, super close. Iâm sure he doesnât give a shit.â
âThis is ridiculous,â Will mumbled. âI mean look at us! Weâre hiding in a bush stalking people!â
âShh!â Dustin shushed his friend. âYouâre going to get us caught,â he whispered.
âWoah, look,â El said softly, pointing a finger straight ahead.
The kids whipped their heads back over to you and Steve.
You were laughing, Steveâs fingers brushing your hair out of your face. He was leaning in slowly whenâŚ
You shoved his face out of the way.
âHa!â Max exclaimed, standing up straight. âTold you they werenât dating!â
Mike grabbed her wrist, pulling her back down into the bush earning a glare from her. âGet down! Youâre gonna expose us!â
âMaybe you need to be exposed for stalking, you creeps!â
âYouâre literally stalking too!â
âDoesnât make any sense,â Dustin mumbled.
âMakes sense to me,â Max spoke up. âTheyâre not dating. Case closed. Letâs go home.â
âHe just kissed her,â El spoke.
âWhat?!â Lucas exclaimed, looking back to the car.
âAre you sure?â Will asked with uncertainty. The angle in which they were would make it difficult to tell as they were facing your passenger side window.
âOn the cheek,â El clarified.
Dustin stood up. âWeâre going to their apartment.â
âWhat?!â Max exclaimed, watching him, Lucas, and Mike climb out from behind the bush and toward their bikes. âYouâre joking! You have to be!â
âHow would we even get in? Breaking and entering?â Will asked with a scoff.
âNot necessary,â Dustin told them. âI stole his spare. Come on, letâs go!â
Max and Will groaned, rolling their eyes.
ââ´ď¸Ë・â
Steveâs Beamer pulled into the parking lot of your apartment, the dim lights illuminating the street.
You smiled and turned to face him. âI had fun tonight, Steve,â you said softly, cheeks flushed a shade of pink.
He smiled, turning the car off. âYeah?â
You nodded. âMhm.â
Steve leaned in over the center console, face just inches from yours. âWell, I had fun too,â he murmured. His eyes flickered down to your lips. âGood thing I have more planned for tonight.â
You raised your brows. âOh, really?â He nodded with a low hum. âWhy donât you tell me then?â
âI think itâs better I show you.â
Steveâs lips ghosted over yours before he finally kissed you.
You sighed into his mouth, your fingers raking through his hair. He tilted his head slightly, deepening the kiss. His lips parted slightly as your tongue was just centimeters away from entering his mouth.
He pulled away, nose brushing yours. âBut not here,â he murmured. âWeâve got a whole apartment to ourselves.â
You smiled as he hopped out of the car. He walked over to your door and opened it, extending his hand out to you.
You took it and he shut the door before locking the car and leading you up to your shared apartment.
As soon as the door opened, you were back on him again.
His back hit the door, your hands pressed firmly against his chest, lips on his. He groaned, hands moving to grab your waist.
He pulled away, eyes wide. âHoly shit, you want me that bad?â he teased, that stupid smirk on his lips.
âShut up, Harrington,â you said, rolling your eyes.
Steve chuckled, picking you up before kissing you again, your legs wrapping around him. He walked to your shared bedroom, lying you down onto your back on the bed.
Your legs remained wrapped around his waist as his lips peppered kisses down your jaw. He made his way down to your neck, playfully biting down on the sensitive skin.
You moaned softly, fingers digging into his back through the fabric of his shirt. âSteveâŚâ
âHmm?â he asked, kissing the spot he just nipped.
âDid I leave my jacket there?â
Steve furrowed his brows, completely caught off guard. He thought you were moaning his name because his mouth was making you feel good. Meanwhile you were asking about an article of clothing. He lifted his face up and glanced down at you. He followed your line of sight, staring at your jacket that was lying on the dresser. âMaybe,â he said with a shrug.
He leaned back down, kissing your lips for about two seconds before you gently pushed his chest and he pulled away. âI know I didnât leave that there.â
Steve wanted nothing more but to kiss you in peace, yet here you were, stuck on a jacket that was lying on the damn dresser.
âBaby, you had to have left it there,â he reasoned. âWhy else would it be there?â
You couldâve sworn you put it back into the closet before you left, but maybe you didnât.
âI guessâŚâ
Steveâs hand slid up your shirt, causing you to inhale sharply.
He kissed your cheek, fingers trailing along the fabric of your bra. âI love you.â
âI love you too,â you responded as if it were second nature.
He leaned in to kiss you again, this time deeper. His tongue grazed your bottom lip and you let him in, sighing as your fingers ran up the back of his shirt, trailing along his muscles.
Suddenly, something creaked from under the bed.
You both jumped, pulling apart.
âWhat was that?â you whispered, eyes wide.
Steveâs eyes were wide too as they bore into yours. âI donât know,â he whispered back.
Bam!
âOw!â
Something like instant recognition flashed behind Steveâs eyes. âDustin?!â he shouted, climbing off of the bed.
Dustin groaned, crawling out from under the bed. As soon as half of his body was out, Steve grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, yanking him up. âWhat the hell are you doing?!â
âI was conducting naturalistic observation!â Dustin defended himself, throwing his hands up.
âWhat the fuck does that mean?!â
âYou were spying on us?!â you shouted, getting off of the bed.
âI needed to know if you two were boyfriend and girlfriend!â
âOf course sheâs my girlfriend!â Steve yelled, shoving Dustin back, making him stagger. âWhat the hell is wrong with you?!â
Both you and Steve thought it was painfully obvious to everyone around you that you two were together. You both did so many things that only a couple would. So, how could anyone not know?
You ran a hand down your face. âYou didnât think to just ask us?!â
Dustin blinked. âOhâŚâ he trailed off. âI guess I couldâve done that,â he mumbled.
You narrowed your eyes at the jacket on the dresser. âI knew I didnât leave that there.â
Dustinâs eyes followed yours and he let out a loud sigh. âI told them not to touch anything,â he grumbled, shaking his head in disappointment.
Steve blinked, turning to Dustin with raised brows. âWhat was that?â
Dustin sucked his teeth, looking up at Steve sheepishly. âWould now be a good time to tell you that the rest of the party is here too?â
Your eyes widened in horror.
âCan we come out now?â you could make out the muffled voice of Mike coming from your closet.
âYeah, itâs hot as hell in here!â Lucas exclaimed.
âI didnât condone any of this, Iâm sorry,â Max apologized.
âMe either!â Will added.
âCan we sleepover?â El asked.
You pulled your lips into a tight line, nostrils flaring slightly. âHow did you guys get in here?â
âOh,â Dustin chuckled. âI stole his spare key a while back,â he said, motioning to the guy he now could identify as your boyfriend with full confidence, no questions asked.
Steve shut his eyes and ran a hand down his face. âJust a bunch of bad ass little kids.â

Dear Steve,
For someone who loves words as much as I do, Iâm finding the right ones hard to say. Youâve been my light in all the darkness. I know Iâve pushed you away and I know Iâve screamed and shouted at you, begging you to leave me. But Iâm glad you didnât. I donât want you to leave. And now, despite my darkness prayers, I donât want to leave either.Â
I know I donât say it, I never have, but I love you. I love you more than any words in the English language could ever express. I love the way you make me laugh. I love the way you cared for me at my lowest. I love the way you make me feel. I love the way you let me learn what it means to love.Â
I donât know what I did to deserve you in my life, but Iâm glad you were a few chapters in it, though I wish I could say you were in more. When the clock ticks and strikes the end of my story, Iâll think of you.
Iâll think of the unconditional love I had for you. Iâll think of that night I pulled you out of that tree. Iâll think of our first ânotâ date. Iâll think of that night my brother had us looking for a baby demo and your hand grabbed mine, making me realize that whatever I was feeling terrified me.
It terrifies me to feel so much for someone, Steve. I just get the feeling that nothing lasts forever and for whatever reason I think that pushing it away will make it hurt less in the end. I thought that pushing you away would prevent anything from happening to you. But I donât want to live like this anymore. I want to be happy. I want to be in love. I want you to know that I love you.
Maybe in another timeline thatâs possible for us, but it wasnât this one.
I just want you to know that itâs always been you. Iâve been painfully oblivious to many things in life, but Iâve never second guessed my love for you. I only ever second guessed if I was allowed to love you. I always thought itâd be selfish to do so because I lived in constant fear that Henry would take you away from me. I thought that trying to suppress my feelings and dismissing yours was a reasonable approach. But it wasnât fair to you and Iâm sorry.
I wish we had more time together, because if we did Iâd fix so many things. Youâd never question my love for you. It would be so ridiculously obvious how much I need you. You're my lifeline and I never thought someone, let alone a boy, could be that for me. Yet, here we are.
Iâm so in love with you, Steve Harrington. Iâm so in love with your stupid hair. Iâm so in love with the pool of honey that is your eyes. Iâm so in love with the way your nose slightly scrunches when you smile. Iâm so in love with the way you care. Iâm so in love with the way you protect. Iâm so in love with your selflessness. Iâm so in love with you. All of you.

Dear Eddie,
Youâre such a fucking weirdo and I love you for it. Youâve taught me so many things about myself and how to view life. Youâre one of the best people Iâve ever known.
You honestly piss me off more than you know. Actually, you probably do know and thatâs why you continue to do so. Anyway, youâve never actually made me mad. I kind of like how annoying you are and Iâm sure youâve caught on by now.
I see a very successful future for you. I imagine you in a few years time all famous and in a band named Corroded Coffin (yes I remember that conversation). I picture you on tour and seeing the world while doing what you love. Maybe youâll find a girl abroad or something and fall in love.
My point is, despite the labels, I think youâll do fine in life, so long as you continue to just be you. Keep being a weirdo and annoying because honestly, anyone would take that any day over some chump that conforms and is miserable.
You light up every room you walk into. You change peopleâs lives. Youâve changed my life.
I canât imagine a world where you donât exist. I donât know how I got through so many years of my life without you in it. Youâve changed me and youâve changed me for the better. I still donât know who I am, but I feel closer to whoever it is than ever before.
You bring out the best parts of me. Parts of myself I never knew existed. This might sound kind of morbid, but Iâm happy Iâm the first to go because I donât know how Iâd ever live a life without you there.
Youâre my best friend and Iâll love you forever Eddie Munson.

Dear Dusty Bun (I know you told me to never call you that, sorryâŚnot really),
Unfortunately I wonât have the privilege of seeing you grow up, but thankfully Iâve seen enough to know that youâve become an amazing human being.
When we were kids, you were probably the most annoying person I knew. You snitched all the time and Iâd chase you around the house beating you with whatever I could get my hands on.
But as we got older, we grew closer. Youâd tell me secrets youâd never dare to tell Mom. Youâd cover for me whenever I was doing things I shouldnât have. We actually became friends and confided in one another and thereâs nothing that could ever replace a sibling bond like our own.
Although youâre younger, I hate to admit it but you might just be smarter than me.
Donât let that get to your head.
But not only are you academically intelligent, youâre emotionally intelligent. You always know when something is wrong. You know how to comfort people and you know all the right things to say and thatâs very special. People need people like you in their lives in order to keep them going. I needed you in my life to keep me going.
When we were younger and I started to really pay attention, I wondered why you and I didnât look like other siblings. After I found out that I was adopted, I felt like I didnât belong. I felt like I didnât truly own the Henderson name.
Yet, that same night that I found out and cried into my bedsheets, you came into my room, not a clue in the world. You laughed at me and made fun of me for âcrying myself to sleep like a babyâ and afterwards casually asked me if I wanted to sneak out with you to ride bikes and my board.
Thatâs when it hit me.
You would always be my little brother and Iâd always be your older sister. Nothing could ever change that. Not even a last name.
Youâre a great person, Dustin, and Iâm so privileged to have been able to call you my brother in this lifetime. I love you so much and if youâre reading this, Iâm probably clowning you from the afterlife for crying.

Dear Max,
I know you told me to not be a stranger, yet thatâs what I became. Iâm ashamed and Iâm sorry.
Youâre the sweetest person Iâve ever met and you make me laugh more than Iâd like to admit.
Donât take this the wrong way but Iâm honestly kind of glad my brother brushed you off a few years back, otherwise you wouldnât be the girl I now see as my little sister.
Weâre so much alike from music taste to skate boarding, and itâs so odd seeing someone just like me. I think youâll always remind me of the younger version of myself. Youâre authentic, loyal, and compassionate. But at the same time, Iâve noticed how deeply guarded you are. Because I am too.
Iâve noticed that you and I struggle with vulnerability, especially around those we love. But if thereâs one thing I can leave you with, itâs to open up. Be honest. Stop using sarcasm to push people away because I can promise you if theyâre anything like Lucas, theyâre not letting you go.
Speaking of which, please tell your boyfriend to stop asking me for stuff for you. Since Iâm now out of a job at Starcourt Sound, he wants all my skate stuff for you, which if Iâm dead, you can have.
I wish we had all of the time in the world to go for one last skate or even one last sleepover. Yes, I enjoyed it despite acting annoyed. You and El are like the little sisters I never got to have.
Youâre a great kid and I only see the brightest of futures ahead for you and it makes me sad to know that I wonât be able to watch you grow. I hope that after death there is something. Anything. Because Iâm not too sure I like the idea of eternal silence. Maybe Iâll get to watch you somehow and haunt you as a ghost, which Iâd totally do.
Your skater twin,
Y/N.
Oh, by the way, I was listening to Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush a few days ago and I think youâll like it if you havenât heard it already!

Dear Lucas,
Out of all of my brotherâs original friends, youâve always been my favorite (donât tell the others!).
Youâre so sweet and always considerate of everyone around you, which is rare to see in boys your age, so take pride in it.
Youâre one of those rare people that can walk into anyoneâs lives and change it for the better. Your loyalty is a trait difficult to find these days and honestly, you have all my respect. I think you are such an incredible human being. Youâre so smart and you always show up when it matters the most, making you incredibly reliable.
While Iâm gone, Iâm asking you to look after and take care of my brother. I donât even need to ask because I know you will. I trust your character.
I wish we couldâve gotten closer, and if I could go back and change that I would because youâre just such an extraordinary kid. Youâre going to have a life full of fulfilling opportunities, so take advantage of it. Iâll be cheering you on from the sidelines.
- Y/N.
P.S.
The other day I was thinking about how you called Steve and I Mom and Dad a few years ago. How in the hell did you know weâd end up together?!

Dear Jonathan,
I think about that day we first started talking and bonding over The Clash a lot. Iâve always struggled to make friends and you were the first friend I made on my own since elementary school. I know, Iâm a loser. Our friendship means the world to me even though weâre states apart now.Â
Iâm sorry you have to hear from me over written words, but your lineâs always busy now so I suppose itâs better than nothing at all. I know we promised each other to find ourselves that day in the woods years ago, and to be quite honest, Iâm not sure I have. Thereâs still parts of myself I donât think Iâll ever fully understand. I donât know who I am anymore and I hope you can figure out who you are in honor of me.
Not tell you who you are or anything, but I think youâre the most human person Iâve ever met. I donât mean that in a weird or condescending way. I just think youâre so kind, creative, and honestly just see things in a way others donât (I suppose thatâs why you love photography so much as it allows you to see what you might have otherwise missed!), and it makes you so unique.
Youâre such a great friend and Iâd love to spend more time with you but unfortunately thatâs not the cards weâve been dealt.
Iâd wish you the best in life, but I think youâll be alright. I know you struggle with feeling seen, but just know that I see you. I see you Jonathan Byers and you're one of the most authentic, resilient people Iâve ever had the pleasure of knowing and it makes me say with full confidence youâve got a bright future ahead of you.
If thereâs one thing Iâve learned in the past few hours, itâs that life is never promised. Thereâs no guarantee that youâll wake up in the morning, so I guess what Iâm getting at is go chase your dreams. Go make that film, go amend things with Nancy, go run for president for all I care. Just go live your life and stop worrying about other people or your own negative thoughts. Go live because at the end of the day, you control your own narrative.
Your best friend that you almost drowned in the pool that one day,

Two days later
You sat on your bed, leg propped up on a couple of pillows as you played with the hem of your t-shirt.
Some shuffling from the kitchen filled your ears, as well as the mindless chatter from the television from the living room.
Your brother and rest of your friends, with the exception of those in California, went to Nancyâs place to help her clean out some old stuff. You wouldâve gone had you been able to walk properly.
It felt odd being in your bedroom despite living in it for nearly your entire life.
You couldnât remember the last time you could see the floor, and now you could see parts of it.
Steve had been coming by and helping you clean up. He folded all your laundry and had it stacked neatly in the corner, dusted off your furniture, and started to reorganize all your stuff again.
It felt so bizarre.
Three people died and you were just expected to return back to normal life. Three people died and Steve Harrington was cleaning your room.
You didnât understand.
What the hell happened that night?
The question rang through your mind and honestly as much as you wanted to forget, you couldnât.
You never would.
âHave you taken your medicine yet?â Steve called from the kitchen, the sound of him rummaging through stuff pausing momentarily.
âNo,â you called back.
Steve hummed and you could hear him pull the cabinet open and shake out a few pills from a bottle.
His footsteps padded through the living room and back into your room. He had an ice pack in his hand, a glass of water, and two pills.
He flashed you a small smile, setting the ice pack and water down onto the night stand. He held his hand out to you and you took the two pills, popping them into your mouth. He handed you the glass of water and you drank half of it and thanked him after.
Steve moved to sit on the edge of your bed by your ankle. He gently unbuckled the straps of the boot at your ankle. He slowly slid it off and you winced, shifting slightly.
âSorry,â he apologized softly.Â
âItâs okay,â you muttered, watching as he set the boot onto the floor.
âCan you hand me the ice pack, honey?â he asked, looking up at you.
You reached over to your night stand, grabbing the ice cold pack. You handed it to him and he thanked you, placing it against your ankle.
You shifted again.
âToo cold?â he asked.
You shook your head. âItâs fine.â
The room fell silent as you stared at Steveâs hand holding the ice pack against your skin.
Your face fell looking at it.
Billy Hargrove, Max Mayfield, and Eddie Munson died/ended up in a coma and here you wereâŚalive with a fucking boot and ice pack.
ââŚEddie Munson, the leader of this cult and prime suspect in the murders, has been missing since the earthquake and is presumed dead.â
The television in the living room was still on, and one sentence in particular caught your attention.
Steveâs eyes immediately darted up to you and saw the way your body language had completely changed.
The way your bottom lip twitched, the way you stiffened and refused to look up.
Steve stood up and walked out to the living room.
âBut this offers little comfort to the people of Hawkins, who are scared, angry, and searching for answers. Why their town? What have they done to deserve so much suffering? A growing chorus believes that the two recent tragedies are linked-â
He turned the T.V. off and returned a few seconds later.
Steve looked up at you, trying to figure out what your reaction would be but you seemed to be completely checked out.
You stared at the floor, something like anger, hurt, grief, and almost vengeance, lingering behind your eyes.
It was truly ridiculous for half of Hawkins to believe that Eddie Munson, a boy who barely made it to his twenties, was a part of some cult that split the town into fours. You couldnât believe some dipshits thought it was true.
But you supposed people needed ways to cope, needed something to believe in to make sense of the oddities of the world.
You hated that it had to be Eddie. Why couldnât they blame something else? Something else that made even half sense?
Eddie was the sweetest boy you had known. When you first saw him you thought he was a little scary, maybe even mean because of his appearance. But as you got to know him, you found out that he was actually kind, caring, and weirdly charismatic.
Yet, all anyone would ever know him as was the guy who killed a bunch of teens then died himself.
It was disgusting.
Your bottom lip twitched ever so slightly and it didnât go unnoticed by Steve. Your brows pressed together and soon enough your eyes filled with tears.
Steveâs expression softened as soon as your gaze met his. Your breath hitched slightly as you tried to keep it together, but as soon as Steve spoke, you couldnât help but to break down.
His words, âOh, honey, Iâm so sorry,â completely did it for you.
You broke down into a sob, the gravity of the loss really hitting you for the first time.
Youâd never see Eddie again. Never yell at him for playing that damn guitar too loudly. Never roll your eyes at his corny jokes. Never laugh when he did something so stupidly ridiculous.
Youâd never see Eddie Munson again.
Hot tears ran down your face and Steve immediately scooted closer to you, pulling you into a hug. You leaned into his side, breath wavering and a headache already starting to form.
Steve stroked your hair, kissing your hairline and resting his head on top of yours.
And you stayed like that for a while.
Just sitting in silence, your sobs turning into soft sniffles, Steveâs head on yours, his arms wrapped around you as if to never let you go.
You heard the front door to your house creak open and you sat up.
Dustin appeared in the living room followed by-
âHoly shit, El?!â you exclaimed.
El smiled at you, walking into your room, followed by Jonathan, Will, and Mike.
âHi,â she greeted you, leaning in to give you a hug. She stood up afterwards and glanced down at your ankle. âYour ankle.â
âYour hair.â
Her hair was buzzed just as it was the first time you saw her a few years back.
She looked up at you, lips parted slightly but with an amused curve. âIt is a long story.â
Will rounded your bed, practically flying on you to give you a hug. You jumped slightly when he wrapped both his arms around you at lightning speed. âIâm so happy youâre okay,â he said, shutting his eyes and squeezing you tight.
You wouldâve said âMe too!â had three other people not died.
He pulled away and you gave him a small smile.
âForgot about me?â
You looked up and saw Jonathan leaning in the doorway. You narrowed your eyes at him. âWho are you again?â
Jonathan rolled his eyes and walked over to you, ruffling your hair and you smacked his hand away making him chuckle. âMissed you,â he said. He looked over at Steve. âGuess I missed you too?â
Steve pulled his lips into a tight line. âThanks.â
Dustin sat on the edge of your bed, analyzing your face. It didnât take a genius to draw the conclusion that you had been crying, your pink and tear stained cheeks a dead giveaway.
His expression softened and he genuinely contemplated not telling you what they had really come over for. He wasnât so sure you could handle much more.
Though, shockingly, you had been doing relatively fine for someone who lost three people. He didnât think your mood was as horrible as it was a year ago.
And maybe that was because now you had someone who you confided in sometimes and didnât care if they saw you at your lowest.
That person was Steve.
For the past two days he had been nothing but a sweetheart. He helped clean your room, helped you when you couldnât walk, and made sure that you werenât alone. Because he knew the person youâd become if he left you all alone.
For the past two days he had stayed up at night with you. Sometimes it would be quiet and youâd rest your head on his chest and listen to his heart beat. Other times he talked. Heâd tell you about his trip to the store to get you more over the counter medicine or something stupid about his past like a basketball game.
Sometimes youâd cry and cry and instead of keeping it all in, youâd tell him how you were feeling.
One night, you told him almost everything. How you felt like you shouldâve seen Billyâs death coming. How you felt like Max didnât deserve any of it. How you felt like you shouldâve done more to protect Eddie.
And instead of Steve telling you that it was fine or that it wasnât your fault, he stayed quiet. He just listened. He hummed every now and then to let you know he was present.
That was all you wanted.
You didnât want someone to respond. You didnât want the advice. You just wanted someone willing to listen to how you felt and Steve was that person.
While it kind of felt good to get some things off of your chest, you hated how it felt to confront your emotions. Talking about it meant you had to feel every ounce of pain, grief, regret, and guilt. You hated it. You didnât want to feel it. So, as soon as you realized that talking about it made you relive the trauma, you ignored it.
Mike came over and gave you a side hug with a small smile. âLong time no see.â
You hummed. âKinda liked it better that way, Wheeler.â
âOuch!â Mike exclaimed, clutching his chest.
You smirked and leaned to sit against your headboard, resting your head against Steveâs shoulder.
Dustin inhaled deeply, trying to sound as casual as possible. âSo uhâŚwe were uhm, you know, shooting the shit,â he began, earning a raised brow from you. âAnd uhmâŚwell weâre going to see Max and just wanted to extend the invite,â he said rather awkwardly. âOnly if youâre up for it of course, no pressure.â
Max had been in the hospital the past two days and was somehow alive, though El would explain later that it was thanks to her. You too were in the hospital for a day due to your ankle and after you were discharged, you went straight home and you hadnât been back there since.
Thatâs not to say you were an asshole or anything, but you just couldnât bring yourself to see her.
You felt horrible because you were sure that if circumstances were different and it was you in the hospital and Max awake, sheâd see you every day.
You were terrified to go see her because it meant seeing the destruction that you caused. Seeing what you failed to prevent. So, you subconsciously pretended that it didnât happen.
You stiffened slightly, feeling awkwardly all too seen by everyone in the room. Feeling as though they could read your thoughts and would shame you for it.
âI think uhâŚâ you trailed off. âI think Iâll have to sit this one out. Canât really walk anyway,â you said, motioning to your ankle.
Dustin nodded understandably. âI get it, no worries.â
You chatted a bit with the others about California and they talked about it as if it were the best state in all the U.S., which it definitely is.
El and Will vaguely talked about school and Jonathan talked a bit about his stoner friend Argyle who you couldnât help but to think would get along well with Eddie.
The group left after a while, leaving you and Steve.
âDo you think I shouldâve gone?â you asked, looking up at him.
Steve sucked his teeth. âI think you should go whenever youâre ready.â
You sighed, resting your head on his shoulder. âAnd if Iâm never ready?â
âYou will be.â
One month later
The breeze blew against your skin, the scent of spring pollen filling your nose. The leaves gently crunched under your feet as you took slow careful steps. It had been a few days since you stopped wearing your boot and began walking again, though it felt strange doing something seemingly so simple.
An annoyed groan escaped your lips as you sat down crisscrossed, a certain metal headâs guitar pic necklace dangling around your neck.
You screwed the cap off of the bottle of acetone and dumped some of it onto the headstone in front of you and began to scrub it clean with a wired brush.
Red paint dripped down the headstone, some of it clinging to your skin. Your scrubs began to speed up the more you thought about it.
People continued to graffiti Eddieâs headstone with unkind words. It seemed every time you cleaned it, someone came right back with more ruthless intent.
Your grief began to turn into something far more dangerous. Vengeance. Especially since you stopped talking about it. Your grief consumed you and the more you ignored it, the more it built up into pent up anger.
You wanted Henry dead. You wanted everyone who hated Eddie dead.
Those nights you couldnât sleep, instead of crying, you plotted.
You fantasized about the ways youâd kill Henry. What youâd say. How youâd say it.
Some members of the town grew slightly weary of you.
Youâd already cussed out principal Higgins.
Word had gotten around campus that they wouldnât call Eddieâs name at the graduation ceremony. You stormed into his office and he explained how he wanted to âavoid controversyâ. You called him out on his bullshit excuse and cussed him out, earning yourself the ability to not walk at the graduation ceremony.
You didnât care anyway, you hated high school and were ready to move on.
Some students in the halls avoided eye contact with you. Youâd already gone off on a few people for claiming that Eddie was the devil in disguise.
You finished cleaning off his headstone, letting out a sigh. âYou know, Iâm kinda sick of buying twenty bottles of acetone a week. Even in death youâre annoying as shit,â you joked, talking toâŚwell no one. You just imagined Eddie could hear you anyway in the afterlife.
Youâd come by and visit him every day, telling him about your life and random dreams youâd have. Youâd joke like in the past, hoping he was laughing somewhere.
âOh, and uh, guess what? Iâm officially not walking at graduation,â you spoke, rolling your eyes. âI donât really care anyway, Iâve actually got work that day.â You shifted, staring at the headstone. âKinda wish you here though, itâs uhmâŚit sucks talking to stone. Wish I could see your stupid face and hear your stupid laugh,â you said, grief seeping into each and every word.
You glanced down at your nails, swallowing hard. âI only ever see you, you know. I donât see Billy or MaxâŚâ you trailed off, embarrassed, admitting it out loud. âIâm ashamed to say it. Billyâs literally in the same radius as you and I just- I donât know, I canât go over there. And Max, thatâs just a whole other story. I donât know what it is but the thought of going to see her fills me with so much anxiety, I just canât.â
Your bottom lip twitched, that familiar feeling of guilt cutting through you like a knife. âMaybe itâs because going to see her means owning up to what I did. Same with Billy, butâŚI donât know.â
You sniffled and wiped a tear and ran down your cheek. âFuck, Iâm literally talking to no one right now,â you half laughed, half cried. âI hope somewhere, somehow, youâre listening, because I really miss you. Itâs like ever since you left I- IâŚlost myself. I never really realized that you were my- like, my glue. One of the few people in my life with the rare ability to keep me whole.â More tears fell from your face. You blamed gravity, but your emotions said otherwise.
You wiped your face again, blinking rapidly. âRobinâs been doing okay, same with Will and Dustin, but they all miss you a lot. I miss you a lot. Sometimes I have these dreams where weâre hanging out, just like we used to. Youâre playing that guitar too damn loud while I try to read. You laugh and make fun of me for getting annoyed so easily and I throw my book at you and I get to hear that laugh of yours. And then you crack the corniest joke Iâve ever heard and I laugh too. ButâŚthen I wake up. And I realize that none of it was real. I snap back into the reality that youâre gone and Iâm still here trying so hard to move on. But I canât. How can I move on when youâre not here with me? How is it fair for me to walk into the future while youâre buried in the past?â
By now your face was soaked in tears as you wiped them in your sleeve, your sleeve so wet that it was just smearing tears across your face. âIâm gonna find him. Henry. And when I do, heâs going to regret ever fucking with any of us. Heâs still out there somewhere, planning something, Iâm just not sure what. But it isnât going to happen. So long as Iâm alive.â
Knock knock
Dustin groaned, rolling over in his bed and pulling the sheets tighter.
Knock knock
âOh my fuckingâŚâ he grumbled, climbing out of bed and walking to the front door, already knowing who it was. âWhat?â he asked, harsher than intended.
Steve raised his brows, caught off guard by his tone. âHey, uh, is your sister here?â
âNo.â
Steve blinked. âWell, where is she?â
âI donât know,â Dustin groaned. âProbably went to see Eddie or something.â
Steve scratched the back of his neck. âOhâŚwhen do you think sheâll be home?â
âDonât know,â Dustin said, growing more annoyed by the second.
âWhen did she leave?â
Dustin shut his eyes and sighed. âDonât know.â
âOkay, well what-â
âCan you stop asking me a billion questions like Iâm some magic eight ball?â Dustin snapped. âYou can just wait here for her to come back.â
Dustin turned around and walked towards his room, leaving the front door open.
Steve blinked. âJeez,â he mumbled, walking inside and shutting the door.
He huffed and rolled his eyes, annoyed by how Dustin had been acting recently. Steve sat on the couch, turning on the television and waiting for you to get back.
Half an hour had gone by and the locks on the door clicked. The door opened and you walked in. You stopped in the doorway, looking up to see Steve on your couch.
He smiled at you and you pulled your lips into a tight line. You shut the door behind you and walked into the kitchen, tossing your keys onto the counter.
Steve stood up, walking into the same room as you. âWhereâd you go?â he asked, popping up behind you.
You leaned over the sink, washing the red paint off your hands, crimson water flowing down the sink. âNo where.â
Steve furrowed his brows, watching the paint drip down your hands and into the skin. âWhat is that?â
âNothing,â you mumbled, turning the sink off and drying your hands. You turned around and walked into your room, Steve following.
He shut the door behind him. He knew you well. Too well. You were falling back into bad habits. Closing him and everyone else off again.
He didnât want to see you struggle again like you had last year. This was something he could fix, and he could do it now.
You opened up your dresser drawer, pulling out a t-shirt and sweatpants.
âYou okay?â Steve asked.
You pulled your shirt over your head, tossing it into your laundry hamper. âYeah.â
Steve watched as you pulled a t-shirt over your head and began to unbutton your jeans. âAre you sure? We can talk about it.â
You tossed your jeans into the laundry hamper, climbing into your sweats. âIâd rather not.â
Steve sighed, walking over to you. He placed his hands onto your hips. âIâm right here. You can talk to me.â
You stiffened. âI know, Steve, but I just donât wanna talk about it.â
Steve nodded. âOkay,â he murmured, giving your lips a quick peck. âOh, I was uhâŚâ he trailed off with a smile. âI was wondering if you wanted to go out tonight? Enozoâs. You know, we havenât gone on our date yet and I just thought itâd be nice.â
Your expression softened. You wanted to go out with him, you really did, but you werenât in the mood to do much. Your trip to see Eddie left you with a heavy heart.
And besides that, it felt weird going out and having a good time when two people died and another was in a coma because of you.
âNot today,â you said. âIâm justâŚkinda tired.â
You could immediately tell that Steve was hurt. âItâs okay.â
It was quiet for a beat.
âLook, I donât wanna go back to how you were last year,â Steve said suddenly.
You blinked. âWhat are you talking about?â
âYou know what Iâm talking about,â he said softly. âItâs like youâre not even here some days. You act soâŚdifferent.â
âWhat the hell is that supposed to mean?â you snapped, pulling away from his touch with your arms crossed over your chest.
Steve realized that his words didnât come out how he intended them to. âNo, no, no, I didnât mean it like-â
âNo, I think you did,â you said, hurt written all over your face.
You knew you had changed. You were colder. You were angry all the time and you even hated yourself for it. You hated the person you were becoming.
Steve sighed, brows pressed together. âIâm just saying, youâve changed.â
âWell in case you forgot my best friend died, my other friend also died, another is in a coma, and my biological father is still out there probably plotting his next move. So, sorry if Iâve changed,â you grumbled, rolling your eyes.
Steve ran a hand through his hair. âNo, youâre misconstruing my words.â
âMisconstruing?â you scoffed. âYou literally just said Iâve changed? You just said I act different.â
âYeah,â Steve now scoffed. âAnd honestly, I think itâs because youâve stopped talking about your emotions. Youâve always done that. You always bury how you feel and act like if you ignore it, it doesnât exist.â
You tensed, feeling completely exposed. Steve read you like a damn book and it hurt more because it was true.
You never handled your emotions well.
A month ago you talked to Steve, and were honest with how you felt. And now you were so consumed in anger you started to go back to not speaking. You didnât want to keep talking about it, it hurt too much to say it. It made it too real for you.
âHow are you ever going to move on if you canât face your fears?â Steve asked. âIgnoring it might make it hurt less, but it doesnât make it go away. Itâs still very real.â
You shut your eyes, shaking your head. âIâm not doing this right now,â you said, moving to walk past him.
Steve grabbed your wrist gently, stepping in front of you and stopping you from leaving. âYouâre not grieving properly. Itâs just gonna eat you alive until you deal with what happened.â
âI am dealing with it, okay?â you snapped. âI donât want to have this conversation with you. Not now. Not later. Not ever. I am fine, Steve. Now, can you move?â
Steve snapped his fingers. âThat. That right there is what Iâm talking about. You canât even have a serious conversation with me about your own emotions.â
âI can, I just donât want to.â
âOkay, if you can then, letâs sit down and have it.â
You stared at Steve, and he could sense your irritation. âWhat is your problem?â
âI donât have a problem,â Steve said. âIâm just trying to help you because I love you.â
You looked away from him, your wrist still in his hand. âCan you let go?â you muttered.
Steveâs fingers uncurled from your wrist. âI just want to help you. Thatâs all.â
You shook your head. âIt doesnât matter how much you try to help me, this is never going to be the same.â
âWhatâs not going to be the same?â
âUs.â
Steveâs heart sank, his eyes filled with tears and for a second he thought he had died and ended up in hell. âWhat?â he asked, voice cracking.
âWell itâs clear to me you want someone whoâs emotionally available.â Your eyes filled with tears as you shook your head. âI canât be that for you, Steve. I canât handle what Iâm going through and you at the same time.â
You stiffened, that last sentence not coming out as intended.
Steve tilted his head slightly. âWhat the hell is that supposed to mean? You donât love me?â
âI- I never said that,â you faltered.
âThen tell me.â
âTell you what?â
âThat you love me!â
You blinked back your tears, looking at Steve. You then realized something. âDid you not read the letter?â
Steve shifted, looking away. Truth be told, he hadnât. It was in the glovebox of his car, tucked away. He couldnât bring himself to read it because it meant reliving the day you almost died.
You scoffed and nodded your head. âI wrote that for you,â you said, hurt cracking through your tone. âI poured my heart out to you because I thought I was going to die and you didnât even fucking read it.â
âI-Iâm sorry,â Steve apologized. âI just- I canât. It hurts too much to think about.â
You scoffed, shaking your head. âYouâre such a hypocrite.â
Steve now shook his head too. âDonât do that. These are two completely different things.â
âOh, so you get to not face your emotions but I have to?â you asked sarcastically.
Steve let out a sigh. âIâm not gonna watch you do this to yourself. Not again.â
âThen donât.â
Steve blinked in disbelief, not even knowing what to say.
Hot tears filled your eyes. âI canât do this,â you muttered.
âThen let me help,â Steve urged you, taking a few steps towards you.
You stepped back away from him. âNo, Iâm not talking about grieving. Iâm talking about us.â
Steve blinked back the tears that threatened to spill. âDonât do that. Please donât.â The hurt in his tone made you want to cry. You loved Steve more than anything, but you hated the way he wanted you to confront the darkest parts of yourself.
âIâm sorry,â you whispered, bottom lip trembling.
Steve shook his head, heart hammering so loud he could hear it in his own ears. âI thought this was something worth fighting for?â he asked, referring to the day you agreed that your relationship was one worth fighting for. âYou said that our love was.â
âI want to love you, Steve,â you muttered, vision blurry from the tears. âBut you make it so damn hard to.â
You loved Steve, you did. But he made you feel like you were drowning sometimes. The constant checking on you and now he was pushing you to do something you had been trying so hard to avoid.
Steve blinked, desolation and anger filling him. âSo now Iâm too hard to love?â he scoffed. âIâve done nothing but been there for you,â he protested. âAll those nights youâve cried Iâve been there to hold you. Every time youâve needed something Iâve done everything in my willpower to get it, and you know damn well Iâd move a mountain for you. Even when youâve cussed me out, yelled at me in my face, and quite literally treated me like shit, Iâve stayed. Iâve stayed because I love you, so donât tell me Iâm too fucking hard to love,â he snapped, his anger rising with each word. âYou wanna talk about being too hard to love? If anything youâre too hard to love.â
And there it was.
The thing you feared the most coming to fruition.
For a long time you avoided telling Steve, or anyone for that matter, that you were Henryâs daughter, because you were scared they would see you differently. That they wouldnât love you.
But turns out, your heritage wasnât the problem.
You were.
You were never good at handling your emotions and now you were experiencing the consequences of it.
Your bottom lips trembled, tears streaming down your face. âFuck you, Harrington.â
Steve scoffed. âYeah, fuck me. The one person who you got to treat like shit but loved you regardless. The one person who stayed with you because it was clear you were struggling.â
You wanted to break down right there, and you were starting to, but you didnât want to in front of him. Not while he was standing in front of you shoving a mirror in your face.
âRemember when you said you didnât even know why I was with you?â Steve asked, tears slipping down his face despite his anger and cruel words. âI honestly donât even know why I was with you either.â
His words cut through you like a knife to your chest. You never deserved him and you knew it. You knew it the entire relationship. Everyone always gave him shit for being insecure, but really you were too.
âNow youâre just being mean, Steve,â you cried, wiping your face in frustration. Steveâs expression softened slightly. He loved you, he always would, but he couldnât help but to feel as though heâd exerted so much energy into you and that you hadnât given him anything back.
The relationship felt one sided sometimes and it wasnât fair to him.
He knew you were going through a lot, but this argument was his breaking point. Heâd kept how he felt bottled up because it felt selfish and inconsiderate to go to you and tell you that he felt like you didnât love him back. So he stayed quiet, his own frustrations building up.
âIâm just being honest,â Steve muttered. âYou were honest with me so now Iâm being honest with you.â
âSo you think I never loved you?â you asked, voice cracking.
Steve stared at you for a moment. âDo you realize how bad you treated me last year?â he asked. âYou donât treat someone you love like that.â
He was right.
You pushed him away, argued, fought, yelled at him.
Was that how you were supposed to treat someone you loved?
âSo, no, I donât think you ever loved me,â he said. âI think that before all of this, you were a good person. I think you were beautiful inside and out, and thatâs why I fell in love with you. But now, I donât even know who you are anymore. I saw pieces of you through the ugliest parts of our relationship, but now youâre not the same girl I fell in love with.â His bottom lip trembled as his voice cracked. âAnd it hurts. It hurts more than youâll ever know because I keep trying so hard to bring her back but sheâs not even trying herself. I canât save someone who doesnât want to be saved.â
Your cheeks and nose were flushed pink as tears streamed down your face. Hearing his words was like a slap to the face. âIâmâŚâ you began, your voice falling apart. âIâm not who you fell in love with?â
Steve shook his head. âNo. Youâre not.â
You choked on a sob, nodding, unable to look at him. âYouâre a liar,â you muttered. âYou said youâd never leave and now youâre leaving. You said I ruined the part of you that knows how. You said that whoever I was, youâd still be there!â you shouted the last part, pointing an accusatory finger at him. âI asked you what if you had fabricated a version of me in your head and- and you fucking promised me that youâd stay,â you cried. âI was telling you that I wasnât who you thought I was but you decided to stay anyway.â
Steve stiffened because Dustin had also told him prior to getting with you that he mightâve had a fabricated version of you in his head. He told Steve that maybe, just maybe, Steve loved the idea of you. As time passed, it grew increasingly true.
Steve had his idea in his head that if he tried hard enough, youâd go back to the girl he fell for. But nothing could ever erase what happened. He couldnât make you not be Henryâs daughter anymore. He couldnât bring back the dead.
He couldnât bring back the girl he fell so desperately in love with.
Just then, Steve realized something. For a long time, ever since the beginning, it had been heavily foreshadowed the play of events. He just chose to ignore it.
âWhy would you say that to me?â you cried, voice cracking. âWhy would you ever lie to me?â
Steveâs expression softened as he wiped his tears. He avoided eye contact, too ashamed to look at you.
âI really hate you,â you whispered.
âYeah,â Steve whispered. âWell, itâs a good thing Iâm not your boyfriend anymore, then. Right?â
Steve walked out of your room, slamming the door shut. Soon after, the front door slammed shut.
Thatâs when you broke down.
You sat on the edge of your bed, hands covering your face as you cried. The worst part was that neither of you were necessarily in the wrong. You didnât treat Steve very well for a long time. Sure, you were struggling, but it didnât excuse your behavior.
And Steve had this idea that he could fix everything. That he could make you the bubbly, happy, person that you once were.
But looking beyond the ugly parts of your relationship, there was something there. There always had been. And that was love. You both loved each other more than anything.
He was the right person, you had just gotten together at the wrong time.
Now emotions and stakes were high, leading to a messy breakup that neither of you deep down ever wanted.
Your door creaked open and Dustin sat beside you, pulling you into a hug, rubbing your back.
He didnât even need to ask what happened. He heard everything.
Steve climbed into his car, slamming the door shut and turning the keys into the ignition, music starting to play.
âBut I need somebody who will stand by meâ
âWhen itâs tough she wonât runâ
âShe will always be right there for meâ
âSunny days, everybody loves themâ
âTell me baby, can you stand the rain?â
Steve scoffed, the song rather ironic for his situation. His hand dropped to the gear shift when his eyes landed on the glove box. He hesitated, sighing before reaching over and opening it.
He took your letter out, looking at the back. You wrote his name neatly, a little heart beside it. His heart ached immensely.
He took a deep breath before opening it, unfolding the lined paper.
His eyes read it over and each and every word made him want to run back into your house and apologize, make you take him back and kiss you all over.
Because you had poured your whole heart.
You told him everything. You admitted words youâd never dare to utter out loud. As he read he could hear your voice. He could hear the sincerity in your tone and how much you rawly admitted everything.
He was so angry, so hurt, so confused, but the more he read, the more he understood the complexity of your nature.
You had never loved someone as much as you loved Steve Harrington. And now you wanted nothing to do with him.
