This use to be my favorite holiday after Thanksgiving. Celebrate American triumph over the English King. Barbecue, warm weather, fireflies and freedom. I don’t feel that way anymore. Today the City of Miami postponed the mayoral election until next year. A sign of things to come I am afraid. Be strong, fight the power.

I realize that wars are necessary sometimes. However it now seems that we are engaged in forever wars and the military industrial complex prefers to have conditions of permanent warfare, something I do not support. I took this picture a number of years ago before the explosion of smartphones. Recently I revisited the image and created this selective color version. It was taken at the Sorbonne in Paris. It made me think if today would this young lady would be reading a hardcover book or would she have her head in her phone like most other people. I have always considered myself to be a better monochrome photographer than a color photographer. Most of that is just experience. In 1982 my wife and I visited Nova Scotia. Mostly we camped except for three nights in an inexpensive motel outside Halifax Nova Scotia. Through the yers we have traveled extensively only occasionally returning to previous locations. However, we vowed one day to return to Nova Scotia and this year we did just that. Independence Day is one of my favorite holidays. Except for the fireworks. I used to love fireworks as a kid. However now I realize how upsetting they are to veterans and also to pets, I have revised my opinion. However it is a good time for a great barbecue with friends and usually great weather helps us appreciate our freedoms and hopefully we can hold on to these in troubling times.

One of the first things we did as we emerged from the pandemic was to renew our membership to The National Aviary. We are blessed in Pittsburgh to be the home of the only independent indoor nonprofit aviary in the United States. It is also the country’s largest aviary. For the second year in a row I received a Silver Camera Award and selected as Photographer of The Year by Noir Magazine. 310 photographers were selected from over 85,000 members with submissions of almost 200,000 images.
