The sun was peeking through my blinds, shining directly into my eyes. I let out a groan, rolled onto my stomach, and buried my face in my pillow.
“...Way too early...” I mumbled, my voice barely a whisper. After tossing and turning for a couple of minutes, I sat up and rubbed my eyes open.
As I stretched my arms above my head, I caught a glimpse of my phone. Another text from Otoya. He always invites me to these stupid parties with him and Karasu.
I grabbed my phone and checked the messages. It read: “Y/n! Babe, you gotta come to this party. Please? For your baby Otoya 🥺💗”
I rolled my eyes and let out a soft chuckle; he was such an idiot. Sure, he was hot, but he was a total playboy, and I was not interested in getting cheated on.
“No, Otoya. I’m not coming,” I texted him back firmly, hoping he’d get the message to back off.
I rolled myself out of bed and shook the sleep from my legs. It was Friday, and I was so excited for tomorrow. My friend Marie and I were planning to go to the bookstore to look at manga.
Will my professor ever shut up? Sure, he’s a nice guy, but he just keeps going on and on and on! Class is almost over and he hasn’t even started his goodbye speech. I let out a groan and rest my forehead on the desk.
I must have fallen asleep because I wake up to someone gently shaking my shoulder. I barely felt it.
I recognize that voice, or more accurately, that thick German accent. I open one eye. It is the same boy from the library yesterday—the one I embarrassingly bumped into.
I lift my head to get a better look at him. Pale skin, brown hair with magenta ends, and... dull magenta eyes. It looks like they are missing a spark.
“Haha... I’m alright. I don’t know why I fell asleep,” I say, rubbing the back of my head. I notice him staring at me and just give him a polite smile.
“...What’s your name?” he mutters. He looks embarrassed to even ask.
“My name is Y/n. Why?” I question him. I see him glance away for a moment before looking back at my face.
“I’m just curious... I’ve never seen you in this class before, and... I wanted to get to know you. What’s your last name?”
This guy I barely know is asking for my full name. Do I tell him? I mean, he is pretty cute in a sad puppy sort of way. It won't hurt, right?
“It’s Y/ln. What’s your name?”
He replies to my question almost immediately “Alexis Ness.”
I raise my eyebrow. Alexis? Isn’t that a girl's name? Whatever, some people have weird naming choices for their kids.
“Cute name,” he mutters out a small thanks, then asks me, “Can I walk you back to your dorm?”
I nod my head and stand up. I gather my belongings, and we head out of class together.
Now, I’m sitting in my cramped dorm across from this German guy I barely know. Sure, he’s cute, but I have no idea why he insisted on coming into my dorm.
Ness is sitting on the gray beanbag on the floor while I sit on my bed, the covers pulled up over my legs. He isn’t even talking to me; he just stares at me for a few seconds and then looks away.
“...What do you think about scientists?” His voice is so quiet I can barely hear the question.
“I think they’re cool. Are you going to college to become one?” I answer. Finally, we are getting somewhere.
“...Yeah. Well... my parents are making me, actually. My whole family is made up of scientists.”
I notice his expression; he looks ashamed to even admit that to me. I actually feel a little bad. Does he want to pursue something else?
“I like magic. Like fairy tales. I wanted to be a wizard when I was younger, but... my family always made fun of me for it. They treated me like a... joke.”
Fat tears form in his waterline. I can tell this is a sensitive subject for him. Poor baby.
I stand up and sit down next to him on the floor, gently rubbing his back with my hand.
“I know we just met, Ness... but you can talk to me. I promise I won’t ever judge you.”
He looks up at me, and his eyes look... different. Like he found his missing spark? I am probably just overthinking it.
“You’re like an angel... Y/n.”
