Austin (aka Ethel’s bf) put out his statement/side of the story. I just want to start off by saying that I think none of this should’ve been brought online bc it’s so deeply personal. Relationships r more complicated then perceived online. Not blaming the op tho. But like he’s not a public figure and what good does this do making it public for everyone to c.

Personally I feel like both sides r valid and this is some big miscommunication sorta thing. Bc both sides have screenshots and whatever and r valid in their feelings. It does seem tho like she did in the past try to “slander” him online, so i just find that a little strange.

I want to do a follow up to my last post on this topic. I will say again I am white so this is not my apology to accept.

I am really surprised and proud of Ethel for putting out a statement so fast. I thought it would take a little longer so good on her for trying to put an end to this.

She admitted to what she did in the first 2 sentences, no bs which I find admirable. She stated that she was aware of what she was saying again being open and honest. She also did say that there’s no place for excuses, that she can take accountability for her actions but since she is white there’s no way for her to understand what the hurt feels like to be on the receiving end of them, said she’s sorry and that any way u feel is valid. Ethel did also say she believes that it’s important to atone not through words but action. Again this is not my apology to accept but she did cover all the bases when it came to the racist stuff that came out.

She did go on to say that wanting accountability is one thing but that this is beyond accountability. I’m happy she addressed these attackers head on bc as I said in my last post these ppl who put this out don’t care about accountability, they just want to destroy her. The fact that ppl online can’t tell that this is an OBVIOUS smear campaign is crazy. It still a good thing that she apologized bc it was needed but the whole thing was off the fucking rails. She also said that these things have been gathered over the years (which she has been tipped off on) and this group (poppy) has been waiting for the perfect time to put this out. She has been at the height of her career for this past year and is about to drop a new album and go on tour so it’s the perfect time to drop something like this.

She did go on to address other things that have been brought up even if she has addressed it in the past. It’s nice just to have one big statement to refer to (bc this will happen again in the future I bet).

Then she did apologize again but said that anything beyond her past mistakes is just straight up targeted harassment. Also she stated she’s pursuing legal action which I hope goes well bc these ppl need to be put to an end. Then she says that ppl wanting an apology are valid and that her apology can’t b everything but it’s at least a start. Her acknowledging the fact that this apology isn’t just enough goes to show her growth even further.

Now as much as any daughter I do love Ethel Cain very dearly. She has been one of my top artist for 3 years straight and all these screenshots that have came out saddens me. It’s never good to see someone you admire has said vile things in the past and it definitely is wrong no matter what. U can bring up that she was raised in a conservative Christian family in the southern panhandle of Florida and was home schooled all you want but it doesn’t change anything. Maybe it gives some context slightly but it doesn’t take away from the hurt/wrong those words have caused people. It doesn’t matter how long ago it happened bc the words were still said, and ppl r valid for being upset and hurt.

However though it’s obvious to anyone who follows her that she doesn’t carry these beliefs anymore if she did at one point. She is probably one of the biggest singers that actually uses their platform for good and activism. This still doesn’t excuse her past actions BUT at least it’s so fucking obvious she has changed for the better. This would be a whole different conversation if she wasn’t as vocal about different issues going on in the world. This is the part that I feel frustrated by.

I don’t think she should be canceled but I do believe she should issue an apology at some point to those affected 100%. This is why I hate cancel culture bc it’s not about holding ppl accountable and moving on w change and helping others. It’s about bringing people down and not allowing growth. It does more damaged than good. I know people r mad that she hasn’t put out an apology yet but I’d rather her take her time and give something sincere then rush something out for the sake of getting something out.

Now that all this stuff has blown up it has gotten out of control. There is no reason to use what is happening as an excuse to be transphobic, spread lies and harm others near her. Also it’s confirmed that the ppl who intentionally posted these screenshots are this weird discord group of people who are transphobic and have done stuff like this to other people. This still doesn’t take away from what Ethel said but it goes to show that this whole thing started from a place of transphobia/hate instead of wanting her to take accountability/care for those who have been hurt.

We should hold people accountable for their past mistakes but also allow growth and change. Isn’t that what ppl should want? More activism and improvement for different causes (which again she CLEARLY has done). Public figures are people to just like many of us who have done/said not good things and I feel like people lose light of that. I know I have said some horrible things in the past and just like anyone I would hope that ppl would see that I have changed.

There is a lot of stuff going around (besides the racist post) that she has addressed before that is easily findable if you actually care for/about these topics but ppl seem to avoid that. Also to there is the stuff about her bf that was posted on Reddit before the racist stuff. I hope that Ethel is ok and I’m sure she sorting out it privately. Ethel prob didn’t know about it and her love life isn’t really any of our business. I hope also that the op of the post is doing ok. She was very brave to come forward and have to share/re live her trauma. And in no way am i defending her bf (I couldn’t care less ab that man) but ive been seeing the word “abuse/abuser” get thrown around even though op did not mention those words in her post. I feel like these words in general get thrown around to lightly which is a whole other conversation.

I feel like all this energy that is being put into canceling her could be used for so much more productive things. Within the next week all these ppl who claim to care about these issues will either not care and/or move on to the next big cancelation and not be productive to any actual causes/issues. Also why don’t people give this same energy to people like Kanye or many other ppl who actively continue to push hateful things?

Anyways I’m gonna end this here. I’m sure no one will really see this but if I said something wrong feel free to correct me. I feel like people (who aren’t affected) just need to calm down, take care of yourself and put down your phone and go outside (not in a rude way lol). You don’t know Ethel so there’s no need to be hard core parasocially defending her and acting like she can do no wrong. Things like this can be pretty disappointing, distressing and hard to see. There’s more to life than what’s happening on the internet w ur favourite artist. If you are hurt you are valid❤️
